  • Ultramegalord

Wow, that’s good, not impossible to flip, hard to kill in both forms, and potentially a relatively cheap 9/7 flying indestructible lifelink……. ow

    • Lorcogoth

hard to get on the field but so far my favorite card of the set.

      • Mr. Giggles

        But Elusive Tormentor, though

  • Khan1104

Secure the Wastes Just got broken.

    • Mr.Mayhem631

It’s going to be turn 7 is that’s your enabler.

      • Khan1104

Well you could play other cretures, but to make tokens at instant speed during endstep is going to be key for this to work.

  • Exyrea

welcome to Aetheros EDH my new friend

  • Mr.Mayhem631

Damn, not even legendary on the one side…
Hope I can get people to let me EDH with this.

    • Hedronal

This is making me wonder what my group would let me do with Elbrus and/or some flip-cards (the ones from Kamigawa that are actual flip cards).

  • Rekecko

So here is something interesting I found… Why does the Flip have Haste when I thought Flip Cards can attack after flipped?

    • Khan1104

Well lands don’t have haste when you play it.

    • Ultramegalord

Play Abbey crack it then attack with the demon. All in a turn

      • Rekecko

To be honest I kinda forgot you can play this when it enters as long as you have 5 Land/5 Creatures. This seems to be half-Broken due to 5 1/1’s getting sac’d for a 9/7 indestructible, flying, haste, and lifelink. **Semi-New**

    • kasigah

So, no creature can attack the turn its card entered play, and if you transform the turn you play the land, this way you get to attack

  • kasigah

    *evil laughing intensifies*

  • Nanya

Can this be used as a commander in EDH?

    • Liam Maiher

      No it cannot

    • Johann Davies

I’m not entirely sure about the rules, but I believe the legendary creature has to be the front side, which is why the Origins planeswalkers could be commanders.

    • Reyos Blackwood

No. Commanders must be legendary creatures in the command zone, this one is neither legendary nor a creature in the command zone.

      • Nanya

        Dang.

  • Hello

Only if black is in your commanders color identity

  • Hello

Otherwise it is exiled when it flips

    • De’Elgathor

Wrong. The card couldn’t be used in a non-Black EDH, because it’s color identity is black (like Garruk Relentless’s is G/B or Archangel Avacyn is W/R)

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Oh wow, that’s a solid card. I predict this may become a new EDH staple with anything black.
Also, this is likely the closest we see to Marit Lage in this set. I am okay with this.

  • Cullen Straut

    How is this only rare

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Because Erebos loves us and wants us to kill things.

  • Zachary Cooper

    Nice a fixed Dark Dephs

  • FinalDrake

Because he is a legendary creature, Can you use him as a commander?

    • Happy The Cat

he would have to start as a legendary creature, thats why most of the kami block flip cards dont get played

  • ZomboJenkins

    Elbrus the binding city 10/10

  • Brian Schmidt

Welp, ask and you shall receive. I said the next thing that will flip is a land. What’s next a Planeswalker that turns into a Sorcery or Instant?

    • Alexander Malinin (Cfyz)

No, next we need a dual-face basic land. Just to be able to build a deck entirely from checklists.

  • Daniel Poirier

    Eldrazi Displacer…

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      Good point.
I doubt they’ll both be played heavily in standard though, for other reasons.

  • BalthasarHohenheim

So B/W token Deck with Odric, Lunarch Marshal and this sounds like fun^^

  • Happy The Cat

hmm esper mass production, jund tokens, grix chaos, junk good stuffs, orzhov tokens or mobile enchantments. golgari+ reanimator, any non modern living death kit, five color ramp, mono black devotion, rakdos aggro, mono black aggro, thopter combo, precurser combo, myr infinite mana jank,
I’ve got too many decks that are going to need one of these…
Edit; oh and my young MC deck, because sometimes you just need to bust a move

  • Jay

Prince of Profanity !! That is a spectacular name right ?

  • Zeph

Creatures flip, sorceries flip, equipments flip, and now lands flip? Everything flips!

  • kmk888

Sweet card. The token producing is expensive but it’s supposed to be on lands (since there’s no real opportunity cost to putting them in your deck)

Good with secure the wastes, scions, and devil tokens

Hard to be sure that ormendahl survives to the next turn in a meta full of reflector mages but haste ensures that he probably gets one attack in if you play around anguished unmaking and indestructible reduces their outs to only a couple of cards.

    • Happy The Cat

dont forget about that liflink, even if they can kill it that’s still nine wizard hats you just stole

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      Oh, yeah.
      Completely forgot.
Hangarback, Nissa, Scion Summoner, Eyeless Watcher…
      So much stuff.

      • Happy The Cat

Devil’s Playground and Dance with Devils don’t seem nearly as bad knowing they can lead into this

  • LightandFire676

I really like that this doesn’t come in tapped. Theoretically, you could rush tokens in some early turns (eldrazi scions are best, because any extras can act as mana) then all in one turn, play this, tap it, pay the cost, sac your dudes, get a demon, and instantly swing for 9 lifelink. I feel like this would actually be good enough for be a force in standard if it weren’t for the crazy amount of good bounce that’s already been spoiled: Just the Wind, Compelling Deterrence, Thing in the Ice, and Jace, Unraveler of Secrets.

Also, he looks a lot like Aatrox.

  • That Guy

MUST. HAVE. FOIL. FOR. CLERICS EDH!!!

    • Happy The Cat

I’m hoping for full art personally

      • That Guy

As nice as that would be, I don’t see where they would give it out. The only full art cards I know of will be the game day promos and they are already spoiled.

        • Happy The Cat

never know they might might change the regular alt art promos to full art promos, they once said flip cards probably wouldn’t be coming back but now he have 6 pws, an equipment, a land, a sorcery and a bunch of creatures that prove that was a lie.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

They never said they wouldn’t come back, just that it wasn’t going to be common or likely.
            So it wasn’t a “lie”.
            Besides, it’s not even related.

  • Kevan Kramer

Sadly the flavor fail is big on this one. The land should be sac instead of transformed. The abbey would be destroyed by the summoned and not turned into it.

    • Seregios MH

The abbey is still behind him when he transforms though.

      • Kevan Kramer

Which doesn’t make sense flavor wise at all.

        • De’Elgathor

After summoning him, isn’t the point of the abbey kind of over? Either it was used simply for summoning him, or for communing with him, but either way, once he’s there, it’s useless to his worshippers.

  • jason pash

This automatically goes into one of my eldrazi builds. I dont even have to build around it! Just shove it in! Monoblue has spawners and whirler rogues and counter backup. Red has pia and kiran (and chandra tokens) and devils. Hedron crawlers are great. You got thought knot on curve to ensure that coast is clear. Monoblack you can even have maindeck duress/transgress the mind to also ensure he stays. You play a good eldrazi deck as normal, then suddenly 9/7 monster. I AM GETTING FOURteen COPIES

    • Dominic Ng

only if this land made to get in magic duels

  • Dominic Ng

    so, Aatrox land

  • Duncan

This could be a one of in atarka red. It doesnt put too many constraints on mana and with crackling doom gone it could give it some serious lqte game reach

  • TogetherAlone

This, lingering souls + harness the storm? make 6 tokens on the first 4-5 turns then sac and swing for 9 in modern?

  • guest

This has to be my absolute favorite card in the set. yea it is no where near griselbrand (I kinda assumed this was a dead griselbrand or something looking at the text). flavor wise its 10/10. also this is one of the coolest new magic card effects since flip-walkers. this card gives a new outlook on manlands!

  • MrAptronym

I am in love with this card. I absolutely want a foil playset. It just has perfect flavor, and I love the idea of a double faced land. Everything about this is great. New favorite card of the set… which is something I have been saying a lot during the previews. Still, if this gets beat I will be surprised.
That said, five creatures and five mana and a land is a large price for a creature. It could be animated and made into a copy of a creature that is easier to flip… but that is generally going to be too convoluted. I think the power here lies in having a potent win condition on a land, even if it is a costly one. In a sufficiently slow deck this seems viable.

  • Mr.Mayhem631

It occurs to me that I’m going to stick this in every single black EDH deck I ever make.
    Hope it’s cheap.
By the way, the proper names are Westvale Abbey and Ormendahl, Profane Prince.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Lame. Prince of Profanity sounds so cool.

    • wiseguy

This would not work in every black deck though.
My mind is wondering if and how I can fit this into my Orzhov edh deck that makes lots of tokens, but that is quite a bit of work to get there on its own.

As others have said, this likely won’t be played very much at all so the likelihood of it being cheap is high.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

        Sure it would.
I’m unlikely to need the manafixing too badly, and it makes tokens if you don’t want to sac.
How are you having trouble fitting it in a token deck? It’s made for token decks.

        • wiseguy

because my Teysa list is pretty tight as it is and finding a cut for it might be difficult.
this seems more like it would take up a spell slot not a land slot, so I can’t just sub a basic for it

          • Mr.Mayhem631

Why would it take a spell slot?
            It makes mana.

          • wiseguy

because color requirements in my deck are fairly high, not to mention I’m down a land if I get to transform it.
Same reason why I consider strip mine and wasteland to be “spells” not lands and don’t count them in my land total when considering my land ratio

          • Asghaad

if you would consider land destruction lands as spells then those “spells” have no business of being in any EDH deck as “spell” that trades one for one and targets lands is USELESS in EDH and a waste of slot …

meanwhile you are going way over on landbase …

this is PERFECT for Teysa, there is no reason for that deck to not slot this instead of one of the colored lands or one of the utility lands…

            its boardwipe protection ffs …

and yes slotting this instead of basic land of your weaker color is exactly the easiest thing you can do and should do …

          • wiseguy

Hmm… Ok i see your point. I have to consider a few other things, but perhaps if i find a utility land to replace this with rather than a basic (again, color requirements are kinda high) then maybe.
So lands like maze of ith are the true spell slot lands and any land that produces mana is utility then?
I guess my only concern is that i often use ld lands for ld so if i added another that eventually goes away then i might find myself low on mana..

          • Asghaad

what exactly does your Teysa deck have in it that requires you to be stingy on colored mana ?

          • wiseguy

Well I tried to post a link to my deck on tappedout but apparently can’t post links here…

Needless to say I many spells I run require two colored mana, and a number of them require 3 colored mana (dark prophecy, mikaeus, grave pact)
Lantern and Phyrexian Altar help but still.
And my land count is only 36 with a number of rocks.

  • Blahblahblahbla

Yea, 10/10 for design. This card is just a lovely lovely thing. Having just built an Orzhov cleric EDH deck, I might be biased, but I could really see this doing some work in other formats. The main downside I see is the loss of resources if you’re playing against blue. I would really be upset to flip this and immediately have it meet a boomerang effect right away. 7/10 playability. And that art!! So good!

  • gordon_fr

Cannot wait to Path to Exile the Prince of Profanity. Not playable in Modern imO. The risk of loosing a land and five creatures plus five mana is huge.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Can’t wait until your parents tell you you’re adopted.

      • Hedronal

What is the point of that comment?

        • Dr. Burn Crow

          Arbitrary snark.

      • De’Elgathor

Ad hominem attacks just show how bad at arguing a point you are.

    • dduuurrrr dddduuuurrrr

he’s clearly really powerful in response to any kind of board wipe.

plus the land makes little dudes, totally self sufficient.

  • Vizzerdrix

A better grove of the guardian, I like it it’s weird but so is a lot of the set and it’s why I like this set so much so far

    • Kotadis

I wish it was as abusable as dark depths

      • Dan Racinowski

Dark Depths is the reason most cards such as this aren’t abusable anymore. They try their hardest to make it as decent as possible without tipping over that broken edge.

      • Vizzerdrix

It kinda is, you make a legendary token with depths so until they answer it yOu’re all set, once they do you do it again same with this, and that being said this is a”fair”dark depths for moderns sake

      • Vizzerdrix

Unless you mean 20/20 turn 2 then yeah it’s not as powerful

  • Ryū

Oh my god, that’s awesome. Ok, here’s a joke: so these 5 guys walk into a church…

  • Zeph

The flavor text says something like: “After the disappearance of Griselbrand, Skirsdag followers eagerly awaited a demon requiring their devotion. Ormendahl didn’t keep them waiting long.” My French is bad but this should be close enough.. Great flavor text though!

    • Necrachilles

Thanks, I’ve never been more sad about flavor text being in a foreign language lol

  • yolksoup

I have no words, wanna see how fast you can lesh this thing out

  • ye

    Marit Lage confirmed

  • Zombie

Extremely cool card, but just as playable as Elbrus the Binding Blade.

As in, not playable at all.

Still in love with it, though.

    • Dan Racinowski

It’s more playable than Elbrus, though. You like smoking that fine crack, don’t ya? Never count anything out.

    • kmk888

Now just hold up a minute my man

Check the opportunity cost on a untapped land vs dedicating a full card slot for a really bad equipment

      • Zombie

You have to sacrifice 5 creatures and pay 5 mana to flip it.

        • kmk888

…and it generates creatures. I’m not saying it’s easy to activate, just that it’s easy to put in a deck and a sink if you don’t already have one. And it actually seems constructed viable with a couple copies of Secure the Wastes.

    • Kahai

You can easily produce 10 Scions in standard and you don’t even need ten.

As for playability, you don’t play much outside of competitive do you?

I’ve flashed in an Elbrus, attached it to an unblocked creature, and had a second combat in one turn before in Commander. It makes your opponents even more upset when Withengar can get haste and unblockable to get a kill and 13 +1/+1 counters.

    • Eric Barton

It’d be a good utility land for WB Tokens in modern.

    • NC

Maybe not playable. More playable than Elbrus, with the Scion party leftover from BFZ block, though, I’d say.

      • Zombie

Possibly, but wiping your own board to drop the big guy is just asking for it to be hit by To the Slaughter, Anguished Unmaking, or Declaration in Stone.

The upcoming Standard is going to have a lot, a LOT, of Exile-based creature removal that can deal with Ormendahl very easily.

Time will tell if it’s actually worth it.

        • NC

And no blue splash for Stubborn Denial any more. Alas.

    • lord_blackfang

lel. This is the best Rare in the set.

      • Zombie

        Um… Not even close

Top cards in the set overall (Not just Standard)

        1. Relentless Dead (Constructed as a Whole/Modern)

        2. Thing in the Ice (Constructed as a whole/ Modern)

        3. Archangel Avacyn (Best card in Standard, Terrible outside of Standard)

        4. Arlinn Kord (Standard/EDH/Casual)

        5. Anguished Unmaking (Some Modern/Standard/EDH )

I’d put Abbey likely in the bottom 5.

The hype around this card is ridiculous. It takes such a massive investment of mana and resources in general, especially time, that you lose more than you get.

Not to mention, if you Wrath yourself to flip it into Oremdahl, you better hope your opponent doesn’t have an Exile-based removal spell or you’ve basically just lost the game instantly. If Ormendahl is killed by something like To the Slaughter, Anguished Unamking, Declaration in Stone, etc., you just essentially 6-for-1’ed yourself.

Might as well just concede at that point.

This card will only be playable in token decks that can dump creatures quickly onto the board and nothing else. No other deck will make it worthwhile to eat 5 of its own creatures.

        • lord_blackfang

3 of those are Mythic. TITI is a trap for noobs, sorry. Unmaking is legit but we’re not exactly hurting for removal.

          • Zombie

Thing in the Ice is being tested by pros for Modern as a way to cut the Green from Delver etc. decks to remove the need of Tarmogoyf, among other uses.

It’s a wall that wraths the board when it flips, and it will be extremely easy to flip in Modern.

Thing in the Ice is also being discussed about its possible applications in Legacy and Modern, with a few promising results.

The best anyone can say about Abbey//Ormendahl is that it will be good in Standard in a very limited number of decks/archetypes, and that it will never ever see play outside of Standard.

          • Asghaad

i assure you that this will go into every black EDH deck at least as boardwipe guard

and for some decks like Meren or Teysa, that are already based around sacking own creatures its mass sack outlet with huge payoff.

i know im deffinatelly putting one instead of one of the colored lands

          • Zombie

Black EDH decks already have Anti-Wrath that doesn’t require 5 for 1’ing yourself.

If Black in EDH didn’t have ways to counteract Wrath effects already, it would be one of the worst possible colors to play in EDH, given that it is second to none in use of board-wipe effects.

Not even White decks run as much Wrath/Board-wipe cards as Black.

  • MonoblackForever

I can’t express how disappointed I am after reading about Ormendahl in the story. Would have been much happier with a regular card. I mean indestructible, haste, and lifelink are abilities that have hardly ever been represented on demons and he can’t be countered, the flavor is dripping, it is there. However, this guy will likely only ever be played or efficient in white token decks. Even when he is on the battlefield, if you’re playing against white he WILL be exiled, you’ll be down a field and a land, and your opponent will only have paid 1-3 mana to do so.
Just wish he was playable in modern….

  • wiseguy

When I first saw the thumbnail before clicking, I thought it was a land that transformed into a better land via some condition. Was slightly disappointed…

  • kmk888

Oh man I can’t wait to keep this in my hand and play 5 medium- bad creatures in limited. Opponent tapped out? GET SMACKED

  • MrAptronym

Lets play a game, what is the most effective way to avoid paying the 5 mana, tap, sac 5 cost? Can anyone find one *better* than the cost?

Best I can think of: Animate Land (Life// Death if you are modern?) + Cytoshape choosing a Civilized Scholar. 4 cards and 4 mana right now, 7 total. So, not at all worth it. Anyone know an easier way to get this thing to flip? (Beyond you know… the ability on the card.)

    • Velvet Wurm

If you’re playing legacy then I think the best option would be throwing out five tokens and a Gaea’s Cradle, tap Gaea’s Cradle for five, pay the ability’s cost and sac the tokens. But then again, if you’re playing legacy then there’s much better things you can do with a Cradle. I’d suggest leaving this to a commander deck, for example, Prossh.

      • MrAptronym

I am asking less for practical reasons and more to see if anyone can think of a good creative way to flip this.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

        Meren says hi.
        She seemed pretty happy, actually.
        Something about saprolings?

    • Kahai

      XD i’m stupid.

    • Tragic

I actually have an interesting red deck concept using artifacts and goblins, that focuses on getting out as many creatures as possible early on. It COULD get this card to go off as early as turn 2 with a PERFECT setup and draws.
      Starting hand would be: This x 1, Mountain x 1, Ornithopter/Memnite x 3, Kuldotha Rebirth x 1, Simian Spirit Guide x 1

T1: Play Mountain, tap for R => Play all Ornithopters/Memnites => Play Kuldotha Rebirth netting you three 1/1 goblins for a total of 5 creatures.
T2: Draw a Battle Hymn => Play your Abbey => Tap Mountain and discard Spirit Guide for RR => Play Battle Hymn to net RRRRR => Activate Abbey second ability sacrificing all creatures, transforming it. => Laugh maniacally and beat face. (Unless someone vapor snags it right after it transforms, then you cry and concede the game.)

    • wiseguy

Any awaken spell on this land, then your choice of blades/wings/shields of velis vel or mirror entity, then moonmist
ideally split between two turns you could do the transforming for as little as 3 mana, after an awaken spell you had in your deck anyways and not just for this purpose.

      • MrAptronym

Awaken is a nice idea, but I believe that the power/toughness defining effect will continue to overwrite the base power and toughness of Ormendahl once you flip it, and it would not wear off. I could be wrong on this though.

Animate land + Shields of Velis Vel + Moonmist does seem pretty good though. You can do it on your opponent’s turn too.

        • wiseguy

Not true, awaken doesn’t define power /toughness, it adds counters to a 0/0 creature which would stay on the land when transformed into (from a 0 to 9 power) so actually the demon would be stronger.

          • MrAptronym

It defines the power and toughness by making the land a 0/0 creature in the first place. Otherwise the counters would do nothing. Effects on a card don’t wear out when it transforms.

          • wiseguy

Ok i looked at the comprehensive rules and because of layering effects plus the rules of Dfc staying the same card, it would be a 0/0 with however many counters on it from the awaken spell used.

  • Hedronal

Leaving aside other matters, I find it funny that this gets two sets of new spoilers in its colors beneath it. Putting one thing not aside, I’m now wondering what my Commander playgroup will let me get away with in forms of technically illegal generals.

    • Secundum

A land as a commander would be lulzy.

  • Johann Davies

This card looks like so much fun I want 50

  • Ashaod422

I don’t see how people say this isn’t playable. This card has some nice reach and it’s a land so it’s a free spot. I would love to see his in a control mirror match. Last time innistrad was around Nephalia drownyard was the go to strategy in those matches.

  • SkullDude

I might consider this in my BUGvine deck. Getting bodies on the field quickly is easy for me. Just like one or two of these. Being able to get a flying, lifelink, industructable, haste with a 9/7 body for 5 on turn 5 or any turn after that is great. Bloodghasts and narcomoebas make great sac creatures.

Its janky. Probably less competitive if not at all. But I cant help but like this card. And if people can hate this card more. Then I am happy. ;) will be able to get a set of these cheap cheap. XD

  • Owlhat

Could it be used in modern black white tokens as a one or two of?

  • Alethio

Something is wrong, since this card has no black mana cost, it is not black! And even, in EDH, it hasn’t got any collor identity because its only mater on the collors symbols writen on the card, not on the cards collor (Example: elf replica is collorless, but has a collor identity of Green).

    • NC

DFCs have color identity based on the backside’s color.

      • bentheechidna

So does that mean the new Avacyn has a WR Color Identity as a commander?

        • De’Elgathor

Yep, and as a card in a commander deck

    • Secundum

You see the black dot next to his Legendary Creature bit? That’s a colour identity marker. That’s been a thing since Time Spiral, 10 years ago.

      • Alethio

I didn’t know, thanks, but appart from the cards collor, the collor identity is black or collorless?, “collor identity” didn’t existed at the time of time spiral, since EDH is quite new, rhigt?

        • Secundum

It wasn’t called colour identity at the time, but it was still a mark of colour (for things that said ‘whenever a blue spell is played) etc.
A card ALWAYS has a colour unless both sides of it are colourless. So this is a Black Card (as noted by the black dot), even though it has no mana cost.
          And EDH was 2001/2002 iirc.

          • AlaAlba

            EDH was created in 2005.

          • Secundum

A little bit of digging shows it was created in 1996. ‘The Duelist’, July 1996 issue, page 12.

A little more research has wizards writing articles about it in 2002 and 2004. So no, not 2005.

Just a note- There’s only one l in ‘color’.

          • Alethio

            Ok thanks

      • AlaAlba

The color indicator didn’t exist in Time Spiral. Cards in Time Spiral with no mana costs, or colors that didn’t match their mana cost had characteristic defining abilities setting their color in their rules text. Color indicators were created in original Innistrad with the first DFCs, then used shortly thereafter with the reprinting of a few Time Spiral cards in Modern Masters.

        • Secundum

*Shrug* It’s a moot point-the colour identity thing has still been around for years.

  • PheonixTheFox

i liked prince of profanity a lot more…

  • ManaBurn

Martial Coup says “what up boss?”

  • Sani

Only reason I don’t like this is I can’t play it in an unsleeved cleric deck, without proxying.

  • MithosFall

    Yeah, I want this.

  • wiseguy

This just went from 3 dollars to 17 dollars in one day. Dafuq?

  • Khan1104

Sacrifice five creatures: Transform Abbey in the Eastern Valley, then untap it.

  • Nanya

Mono-black deck using Grave Titan to pump out the tokens?

  • Guest

Technically you can’t, but depending on your play group maybe they would let you?

  • Zachary Cooper

Would be great in cleric tribal or Endrick Sahr

  • De’Elgathor

Again, an ad hominem attack. I’m beginning to doubt you know any other way of making a point, since it’s all I’ve ever seen of you on this site.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

I will admit, it’s a favorite because it’s easy and seems to irritate, so that’s fun.

  • Dom

    Id be cool with it.
