Ajani, Mentor of Heroes Art

  • CKMo

    i knew it!

    • CKMo

and that ultimate is kind of underwhelming lol

  • Dr. Storm Crow

Pfffffffffft. Just pfffffffffffft. That ultimate. Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.

  • DeathMetalLlama

    Umm WHAT?

  • guest

the ultimate is not impressive but i still like the other two abilities.

  • The dude

    Whaaaaaaatt???? Insane!

  • Joshua McTiernan

    So yea……this is so awesome!!!

  • chandlerpatrick

People say the ultimate is not impressive. Umm, Seriously? Ok. I’ll just gain 100 life. What ya gonna do? Oh, and by the way, his other two, AWSOME abilities, are both +1. So yea, you’re just building up to the ultimate… This guy is awsome.

    • guest

The thing is that most planeswalkers ultima are game enders while this just gives you a couple of turns that may not matter if the opponent is ahead.

      • jotunndigital

“Couple of turns.” If you’re in a game where gaining *100 life* is “a couple of turns,” then you’ve got serious issues with your deck.

  • David T.

I’m already imagining complaints about his ultimate being underwhelming, but I mean come on 100 extra life is still pretty darn inconvenient for anyone. (except infect)

    • shaggs138

or mill or door to destiny or vraskassassins…

      • jotunndigital

Mill is a valid reaction. The latter 2 are not, especially against the 2 colors that both have major artifact/enchantment removal. White has straight creature removal, so Vraskassassins should never, *ever* be a problem. If they are, you’re bad.

      • wombat604

Do you mean door to nothingness?

  • Tommy

I feel like his ultimate is just because for extra value. His two +1 are great. Oh and with doubleing season this is pay five man’s gain 100 life haha.

  • Mike Thomas

Now we need to complete the shards…

    • guy

finish one great accomplishment, and yet to be satisfied. you are a magic fan.

  • candyslice

the ultimate is hella impressive, it’s just underwhelming. it doesn’t feel like the epic sort of thing you’d expect a -8 on Ajani to do…

    • Kevan Kramer

It fits with Ajani actually. His other ults gave you x cats where x=your life, and blow up all lands of one player.

  • Chi Sarades

loving it, its how i imagine it. now would they make a card for his weapon too hmmmmm

  • selesnyaWarden

So WOTC finally completed the long task of having ALL guild alinged planeswalkwers to own for EDH, THIS GUY IS AWESOM WITH HEX PINNACLE, T_T

    • White Powerade

      Room*

    • White Powerade

Gawd I hate mobile sometimes xD sorry that was meant for my post

  • White Powerade

Already finding Tim in my sigarda edh deck.

  • David Fitzsimmons

Alright lads, ready for some crazy combo work?
Combine this with Sunbond on Sage of Hours.
Now that ‘well it might give you a better chance of winning if you arent already’ Ultimate into a ‘if you loose after 20 free friggin turns you are a moron’ ultimate.

Yes its crazy and counterable, but silly to imagine

  • Zombie

I WANT IT. I WANT IT SO BAAAAD.

Oh my god Bant Walkers/Progenitor Bant Midrange with this is just gonna be literally the bee’s knees.

I just can’t anymore. I’m so excited for this set.

  • Zombie

GW Hexproof/Voltron, Bant Hexproof/Voltron, Bant Walkers, Junk Midrange… All of them just got so much better.

I have lost the ability to even. This version of Ajani is literally oozing with flavor.

Not to mention his applications in EDH.

    • Mike Thomas

Not to mention the sick art and double +1 abilities.
Seriously. Brimaz and Ajani = best of buds. With 1/1 cat tokens everywhere, getting them bigger is beautiful.

  • silver

oh god….. OH MY FUKIN GOD!

  • Aaren Miller, you’ve brought pride to the name Miller

  • DInner

has no standard potential, white is awful in standard

  • Anthony Bartolomey

I like the card but dislike the color combo for standard. +1’s are really good and the ult is cool in theory but may not actually save you in the end.

  • aswad

    bant midrange/control looking strong

  • Tank Johnson

I’ll minus 8… cool… um, Skull crack for game?

    • Zombie

      OhheylookAjani’sinBant

      *Dissolve*

      But what abou-

      *Plasm Capture*

      No, wai-

      *Swan Song*

      Come on dud-

*Too busy overrunning you with Planeswalkers and fatties to care about Skullcrack*

  • harakka

This with Doubling season and Ageless entity. -> 200 +1/+1 counters.

    • spikefire

put the 1/1 counters on sage of hours, remove them. 40 bonus turns!

      • David Fitzsimmons

Just use the +1 ability for 6 +1/+1 counters. a bonus turn every turn means infinite turns. Chances of loosing becomes astronomically low.

    • harakka

For fun, then use a Soul’s might for a 612/612 Ageless entity, and while at it, make it two doubling seasons for a total of 2020/2020.

    • David Fitzsimmons

Sunbond does the same thing as ageless entity on ANY creature you want.

Now let’s think of ALL the fun things of this ok?

How about a Sage of Hours?

TWENTY EXTRA TURNS! your ultimate is now no longer just a game extender and is a near guarenteed game ENDER.

Combine with Vorel or even doubling season and you got 40 extra turns.

      • David Fitzsimmons

I just realized that Vorel can cause infinite turns with the +1 ability.

      • Flames and Riverflow

Personally I believe in a more cost-efficient combo to use with Sage of Hours, while still achieving the result of infinite turns.

        Turn 2, Oreskos Sun Guide.
Turn 3, Sage of Hours, Cast Ephara’s Radiance on Sun Guide.
Turn 4, Sunbond on Sage of Hours.

You now have a setup to gain 5 life and counters each turn, thus giving you infinite turns with Sage’s static.

        /flips the table

  • I like his +1’s, and the ult is cool, but i was hoping for something a little more game ending…

  • Robert Kupper

The ultimate is funny, but I am not very excited by anything going on here. The second + is a nice way to gain some card advantage though.

  • RomriDade

I see you want to gain 100 life. It would be a shame if someth- SKULLCRACK!

    • spikefire

XD yeah the ult seems a bit… pointless, but dem upcycles are tasty

      • Kevan Kramer

100 life gain is never pointless. Skullcrack is only a problem in red. Black has Erbos, but he would be on the field before you would use his ult. Which point you would keep on plusing him.

        • Nyrab

Not if you’re playing b/g with 5 black devotion on the field, Savage summoning>Erebos. I live for the day that someone does that in response to a Rev or Ajani ult

    • Robert Kupper

False Cure! someday, somewhere, (Probably in EDH) someone will false cure in response to his ultimate, and the results will be amazing.

  • Taco

I feel like this guy was made perfectly for a lot of decks. Bant walkers, Junk midrange, G/W Hexproof. . . the list goes on.

His -8 is not underwhelming either! why? because 1 he can actually get there, and 2, people are going to make it do what they want it to. No control deck has ever said umm no, I don’t want that extra 100 life to stabilize and make sure I can kill you first, lacking an elspeth or not. And whats better to go with gaining that much life than a little Sanguine Bond, Vizkopa guildmage, or Blood Baron?

Now his second +1, thats amazing. G/W card advantage?

Here is a basic deck list:
    4 Brimaz, King of Oreos
    4 Jace, Architect of Thought
    2 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
    2 Ajani, Mentor of Heroes
    2 Elspeth, Sun’s Champion
    4 D-Sphere
    4 Supreme Verdict
    . . . etc.

In this list, chances are he buys you an extra card a turn. Use that with jace and kiora, using his -8 to make sure your life never dwindles and you pretty much have a board state that can’t be punctured purely through creatures. Then all your other walkers can ult for the win!

Edit: Hence your going to be seeing a lot from Hero’s Downfall and Dreadbore this upcoming standard.

    • spikefire

your missing the bigger picture, brimaz and elspeth make tokens, ajani makes them massive with the first upcycle, you can then brute force your opponents defence. or if their def is to solid you can go for the card advantage and dominate with control magics instead. he is a brutal 2 way killer especialy with your deck list segment.

      • Taco

I misread his first ability actually. (read it as “you may put a +1/+1 counter on up to 3 target creatures” somehow) Yeah, I think he can do work, now more than ever. Mainly in the decks where Garruk can’t.

  • maverick

kinda dissapointed by the 5 cmc but im most likely going to run him just for his second ability because its exactly what my deck needed plus 2 + 1s is pretty cool try to cheat him out a turn early with mana dorks

    • Antares

I think it’s actually awesome. I currently run a G/W beatdown deck, and this was really just what it needed. The early creatures (things like Voice, Precinct Captain, etc) are made SERIOUS threats thanks to this, and the late game (Cough, ADVENT cough) are made even more ridiculous. He also lets you get some card advantage once you run out of steam, or dig for a win-condition. Finally, he is ALWAYS working towards his Ultimate, as opposed to Kiora or Vraska, and he has an immediate presence on the game (similar to both of the previous ones) in a very pronounced fashion (which may be a Vraska thing, really because Kiora may or may not be hit/miss).

His ultimate, while not game-winning, will put the game out of reach for anything but the slowest of control decks. I like him a lot. He’ll give G/W and Bant some very good power.

  • DA

Curves out from Fathom Mage in Bant for a nice turn five draw and 4/4.

Tho if you’re running bant, I used Sage of Hours for a better combo, probably get infinite turns with the right cards, but 3 counters on it per your turn is still pretty good.

    • David Fitzsimmons

You are running Sage of Hours and Ajani. This means you can also run Vorel. One turn will net you 6 counters, and bam, infinite turns.

      • unamable

by the way heroic needs spell to be activated, in that case, you can’t use abilities of planeswalker to activate heroic abilities,
so please, just don’t use that

        • David Fitzsimmons

Double check Ajani, HE gives the counters, not using the Sage’s heroic to gain any counters at all. If I was counting it I would have said 8 counters a turn and not 6. You get 3 from Ajani’s first +1, then Vorel doubles them. And repeat on your next turn until you win the game.

          • James Allen

Don’t forget that Corpsejack makes it even more fun!

  • dinner

    replacing elspeth in standard

    • eltratzo

isn’t she already completely replaced by iroas according to you, oh great master? ^^

      • Noinim

Shes now double replaced. Third placed.

  • guest

at first you think these is overpowered because of the final but then you think I could use its first ability on true-name nemesis :D with vorel and rule (I know true-name is only played in commander and casual)

    • guest

      maybe also increasing savagery

    • Kim Blackburn

      True-name is played in legacy.

  • matt

Sage of Hours+ Ajani, Mentor of Heroes

  • Sam Chi

This is soooooooo bad! (Takes out wallet)

  • Sam Chi

Also, WTF happened to his axe, did it get cut in half?

    • guest

      thinking the same thing

    • Chi Sarades

yeah your right, now he has a sword

      • Sam Chi

He has but I want to know why it’s in half.

        • Chi Sarades

oh wait i think the other half is n his back

    • Yup

His craftmanship skill isn’t high enough to fix it.

  • Dinner

you can only have up to 60 life in a game, so whats the point of gaining 100

  • Nemo

This guy feels like he was built to give GW a better answer to Jace, AoT.

  • Storm Crow

he fits well into my G/W hexproof deck

  • 3dhBlasph3my

I can see this guy being played and watching your turns become longer and longer because you aren’t sure which ability you want to use. This guy is hysterical

  • wisdomseyes

He is very similar to elspeth, because he only has pluses… but his ultimate isnt quite as game breaking. Lifegain is good for sustaining, but against mid ranged or control decks, lifegain is generally just wasted. And of course aggressive decks that arent controlled tend to not let him get his ultimate.

I feel this card will be played. It isn’t quite as strong as elspeth, but it does quite a bit of work in terms of drawing cards.

  • Jeramie

Going to be a very valuable card

  • EmElw

Inbefore the “Dictate of Nylea” (or whatever) is a Corpsejack Menace with mono-green cost. Ajani, in that case 6 counters per turn, and an Oracle of Hours, is a win. But it’s a pretty fail combo I suppose. Atleast it isnt 3 different creatures. Totally going to build a deck on it.

  • Mick Cortella

    *opponent activates -8 ability*
    says Whatcha gonna do??
    *you play sorin Markov*
You say your lifes at ten
    *opponent *flips table*

  • wombat604

I want to play GU fatties really bad, but this guy, just my god, he’s making me think twice

  • Corm Strow

    Damn

  • krlmaahs

i only need 1 spell to handle him….. skullcrack.

that being said there is to much to deal with him right now, heck he is even in a set with a god that says you can’t gain life. His first plus 1 has to have at least one target on the field….. his only real saving grace is his 2nd plus one……. i put this guy at a 15 dollar planeswalker at the most

    • block not set

    • Whiskerbro

You gave no good points. You showed that there are 2 cards in Standard that can deal with his ult. Wow! That is so impressive. But you know, according to your logic all planeswalkers are bad anyway, cause they can killed by Dreadbore or Hero’s Downfall!

“His first +1 has to have at least one target on your field.”
According to that logic Angelic Destiny is bad. So is Curiosity.

  • David

Has anyone thought about one or two copies of him in Pod in Modern?

  • Hihiuk123

    He’s pretty good.
However, I’d never let him live long enough to play his 100 life move.
My friend pulled one of these from a booster recently. I wouldn’t buy it,
but if I aquired it from a booster, that’s a completly different story.
Considering I dont use green… I’d probably sell it. But it’s a good card,
something I would be excited to pull out of a booster…

    • Zombieritual

if doubling season is out your screwed lol
