So we recently have gotten Vampiric Bloodlust in Commander 2017 and now we have plenty of vampires to put it. This one is particularly good once Edgar Markov has built you a nice army of vampire tokens. Would have been amazing and probably an auto-include if it was “Each opponent”.

For the CMC, relatively low P/T, and lack of other abilities, I don’t feel this is that great for Edgar. In my experience, especially in a boardwipe-enthusiastic format, there’s never a large enough number of vampires to do significant damage.

you sir are not playing enough board protection

      • David Castro

even if they board wipe, there are so many vampire token producers in magic right now that you will rebuild faster than most. Edgar is 2 for 1 for each creature you cast, Bloodline Keeper//Lord of Lineage, Sorrin, etc, etc. Board wipes aren’t that important for you.

        • Alex

My particular playgroup is… especially enthusiastic… about the amount of boardwipes incorporated into decks…

      • Evan Grantham-Brown

Agreed. If a card is a dead draw without a heap of vampires, then it needs to be really damn good when you *do* have a heap of vampires.

If you have 6 vampires out, Malakir Bloodwitch gives you a 36-point swing versus the table (each of them loses 6, you gain 18). This guy gives you a 6-point swing. Bloodwitch is good enough to run despite requiring a heap of vampires. Bishop… isn’t.

I think even in vampires, there’s no real reason to run this over Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

    • Kata

Tokens don’t count for devotion, but are still vampires. Also not all vampires are black. So if you’re going for a token heavy deck featuring non black vampires, this is probably better.

      • Shagoth

A multiple colored vampire swarm deck where you’d rather run this than grey merchant?
If only wizards made a commander deck for that. This year. That was tribal.

        • Happy The Cat

Yeah, but does that deck feature a commander that makes tokens when you cast vampires even while they aren’t on board!?
          oh… wait a sec…

  • M Hedonist

Nice to see vampires get their own version of Gray Merchant, except it doesn’t escalate quite as insanely as Gray Merchant does.

    • ymmij X

it does count tokens though and there seem to be a lot of those running around

    • Happy The Cat

with Edgar edh the counting tokens will probably matter more than counting all four of a Phyrexian Obliterator’s mana cost.

  • Mikey Brooks

It’s fine but it’s no Shaman of the Pack and neither do we have access to CoCo in this standard :(

That being said Edgar Markov will like this a lot

  • Seant Ryan

I like it, but I’d rather run Malakir Bloodwitch in my Edgar deck.

  • Vincent Godin-Filion

    Bloodwitch of Malakir’s ungrateful child.

  • ymmij X

if vampires are about life gain in this set why isn’t this a drain effect

    • Happy The Cat

because Gray Merchant of Asphodel was one of the most broken limited cards we’ve ever seen since WotC started caring about limited.

  • Happy The Cat

so a balanced vampire Gray Merch that’s 3/3 instead of 2/4.
    could be worse.
