• Jalais

Welp, that’s how you make bloodmoon not miserable.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

That’s how you make Blood Moon good in Tron lol

      • Zombie

        *Playing Blood Sun in Tron*

“Oh no I just turned my Burn opponent’s Sacred Foundrys and Stomping Grounds into Plateaus and Taigas!”

Biggest things this negatively affects: Inkmoth Nexus, Ghost Quarter/Tectonic Edge, Cavern of Souls, Tron’s own Eldrazi land.

And I guess it makes Death’s Shadow players slightly irritated.

This is about as niche sideboard-tech as you get.

        • Shawn Michael Diaz

You also turn their Foothills and Mires (the cards that make shocks good) into blanks. Not like Burn loses more than 4 life a game to shocks anyway. You’re also losing that matchup more often than not and your wins don’t come from a little extra damage all that often.

        • Oscar

Are you sure that it changes Cavern of Souls? I thought because mana abilities are unaffected, you still can add mana of any color to your mana pool and its restrictions (to cast a certain creature type) and benefits (can’t be countered) are tied to it (I guess Cavern won’t work when Blood Sun hit the battlefield earlier). Same with Eldrazi Temple.

          • Zombie

Cavern of Souls’ ability is ETB, meaning that it won’t have an ability as you play it.

That means you can’t select a creature type to provide colored mana for.

Cavern will still produce 1 Colorless Mana.

  • MTG fan

    EDH material.

  • eltratzo

    that’s no moon!

  • Sullivan Barthel

    wait WHAT

  • David S. McCrae

    FUGGGG!!! LOL

Play shocklands untapped at no drawback!
Lands that come into play tapped no longer come in tapped. Yes, no?

    • Chaospyke

I Could be wrong but I believe they still come in tapped as the tap ability works in hand

      • MithosFall

Nope, this would cause lands to no longer enter tapped due to their own abilities. See rule 614.12.

    • Jalais

Lands that enter tapped would enter before this effect applies, and I think with shocklands you lose the option to have them untapped at all.

    • Alexandre Donnart

      Wrong.

    • zipec

Actually yes. As of Ixalan changes (read here https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/ixalan-comprehensive-rules-changes-2017-09-28 ) All lands would truly come into play untapped.
“Now, to determine what replacement effects will apply to a permanent entering the battlefield, you look at continuous effects that modify that permanent’s characteristics coming from the permanent itself along with those that already exist and will affect that permanent. Dimir Aqueduct enters the battlefield untapped under Blood Moon.”

      • MithosFall

Dimir Aqueduct wouldn’t even make you return a land to your hand. Lotus Vale would be even more ridiculous.

        • DJ Pad

I wonder if this resurrects Amulet Bloom into Amulet moon.

Cue to eventual spike in Scorched ruins/Lotus Vale

    • Jazzyboy1

This only affects land permanents(‘lands’ as objects). It does not affect land cards. If it did, it would specify ‘land cards’.

The come into play tapped effect happens as the land card is played, not after it’s played and becomes an object. It’s also not an ‘ability’ afaik. It’s a replacement effect which defines how the land should be treated when it’s played.

      E: Oh, Umbacano is right. There has been a rules change;
‘If a nonbasic land has an ability that causes it to enter the battlefield tapped, it lose will that ability before it applies. The same is also true of any other abilities that modify how a land enters the battlefield or apply “as” a land enters the battlefield, such as the first ability of Cavern of Souls. This is a change from previous rulings.’

    • Umbacano

I’d say you’re right because of the quite recent rules change that for example allows the Blood Moon/ Dark Depths combo.

  • Chaospyke

A nice counter to all the flip cards we’ve been seeing.

    • Jalais

Azor’s Gateway still has fun in the sun.

  • Umbacano

    SaffronOlive just had an orgasm.

    • Tolle

You mean Seth, better known as SaffronOlive

      • Umbacano

        Proooobably

      • eltratzo

        *probably

    • Umbacano

It is even better than Blood Moon against fetch lands.

      • TomGalonska

        But worse against the shocks…
So in modern you’ll likely stick to blood moon, since this doesn’t even kill tron.
Maybe blue moon plays 1 or 2 as additional land hate.

        • Umbacano

Youre right. But it also means you can play Blood Sun in a deck full of shock lands. It gets even better with bounce lands (since Im pretty sure it would enter the battlefield untapped and of course you wouldn’t have to bounce a land).

  • Heikki Kanniainen

    Good bye fetchlands.

  • Calvin

Does anyone else feel like this card is super cringy?

  • Thomas Porter

Ah. 12 bloodmoonish effects. This could be… interesting

  • Sean Harp

At least we have naturalize back

  • Jakub S.

    Enemy fetches in Dominaria?

  • AARON

    Does this kill tron?

    • Oscar

No, the lands have normal mana abilities.

      • Aaron Hooker

Can they see each other though?

        • Kahai

Yes, the tron lands are not affected by this enchantment. The tron lands ability is always a mana ability.

  • Brian Schmidt

Because we didn’t want Blood Moon in Standard, but something close to it.

  • Oscar

Lotus Vale is pretty good with this out.

    • Johan K

Lotus Vale has errata to be a replacement effect, so this doesn’t change its functionality. Sorry.

      • Oscar

Isn’t this replacement effect also an ability though? I know that Blood Moon now makes it so that shocklands enter the battlefield untapped because they’re mountains and lost their ‘comes into play tapped’ ability…

        • Johan K

If you see the ruling on Lotus Vale: “If you don’t sacrifice the lands, Lotus Vale never enters the battlefield — it goes directly to your graveyard.” Blood Sun only affects lands on the battlefield. Shock Lands are on the battlefields when you choose (look up any modern MTGO video on youtube)

        • Johan K

I was incorrect. Scratch anything I’ve said. Sorry.

  • Happy The Cat

here comes the sun (du du du du)
here comes the sun and I say:
    “that’s a bit much.”

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Most exciting new card so far

  • Random Guy

    The absolute madmen

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

So this hits fetches, cavern/unclaimed territoty, ghost quarter/field of ruin/tech edge, mutavault, bl/inkmoth, pendlehaven, celestial collinade, raging ravine, inventor’s fair, eldrazi temple, valakut, etc.

    • AHunter

Doesn’t hit cavern/territory i belive, even with all of those word, they are still mana abilities (ie : add mana, doens’t target..)

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

You don’t name a creature type so you don’t cast spells with the mana produced.

        • AHunter

Yes indeed, I forgot about the new rules. Still doesn’t work if they were played before,no?

          • Shawn Michael Diaz

If they already named a creature type, it doesn’t change anything

    • Pacu

How does this affect Eldrazi Temple?

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

I was thinking Sanctum of Ugin, whoops

  • Adam Myers

Really? Blood Sun? This is clearly a weaker Blood Moon. It’s still a fun card for commander decks.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

It’s very different from Blood Moon. Don’t think you realize how much this can do.

    • AHunter

Do you want blood moon in standard? as much as i love prison,i don’t.
It’s even worse because of the lack of fetchland (and therefore being able to fetch basic). Hosing temur energy and their greedy mana would be nice, but this would kill all of the 3+ color deck in standard, or just make them lose if they don’t have the answer in hand.

      • Adam Myers

Na I really don’t. Blood Moon is annoying.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

In modern it hits fetches, cavern/unclaimed territoty, ghost quarter/field of ruin/tech edge, mutavault, bl/inkmoth, pendlehaven, celestial collinade, raging ravine, inventor’s fair, eldrazi temple, valakut, etc. It also makes shocks, bouncelands etc. better. It also doesn’t screw your mana when you play it in non-mono red decks. Tron can play this card!

      • AHunter

Oh! the “anti tron'” card has a brother(or sister?) that kill wastelan-oh nvm just the bad one.
        Still super good!

      • Adam Myers

Those are fair points. I’m not saying that It’s not a good card. I just think Blood Moon is better.

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Free Win Red dropping this turn 1 seems pretty dece.

  • Jakub S.

    Blood Mun.

  • Shagoth

People say that this is a worse Blood Moon, but in a way, it can make it more nasty.
Think of this, imagine Tron with this. It can basically be a blood moon that doesn’t effect you, and there is a larger number of decks that can utilize this without harm than blood moon. I know many nay sayers will nay say me, but it’s something to think about. Offensively, no where near blood moon, and I think blood moon is better.

    • Marvin Sürig

Blood Moon is good if you want to screw the multicolor decks. But if you play the common lands from Ravnica you remove all bad effect like the enter the battlefield tapped stuff and the malus of returning another land to your hand. Gone! Turn 1 Birds of Paradise, turn 2 another land and this and turn three: Congratulation you can now play lands that produce two mana without any disadvantage ;) Have fun Brewing XD

      • kukuc96

I never thought about bouncelands with this. Also Shocks are straight up duals.

        • Marvin Sürig

A friend of me got the Group Hug EDH Deck (non black) and the Dragon Deck and uses a lot of those. He came up with the Idea. I hope it get’s at about 5-6 Dolar because he and me are short at cash XD I’d really like to see him using that as an insane ramp spell :D

  • Tezzybros

“who truly runs this city? Look to the sky on hallowed days, and see whose sigil is stamped clearly onto the heavens.”

I think Azor created EVERY guild back on ravnica as a way to simulate a giant form of a social experiment, and how to assert control over the masses over chaos, or what thoughts we cling to for belonging.

    • Falconfly

Actually, many of the guilds evolved from already established organisations. But who knows, maybe they’ll retcon them into having been all founded by Azor.

  • galen150

so, blood moon but not cancer?

    • Grant Jacobson

      and it draws a card

  • Grant Jacobson

does this interact at all with dryads arbor?

    • Happy The Cat

well Dryad Arbor is just a forest that’s also a 1/1 Dryad. it doesn’t do anything besides tapping for mana and just being a 1/1.

      • Grant Jacobson

what if you equip Umbral Mantle to the dryad would it keep the ability as a creature or lose the ability as a land?

        • Shawn Michael Diaz

Umbral Mantle is on a different layer. Probably a layer where it still works. I can never remember the order of the layers. Sun should be on the same layer as Humility and you can definitely equip your 1/1 guys and give them +N/+M and abilities.

        • Happy The Cat

well, then it is land with a non mana ability, so it would then lose those abilities.
Another notable interaction like this is Awaken the Ancient and other land enchantments, the land you attach Awaken to is a 7/7 but loses the Haste.

  • Kahai

Does anyone else think this might see legacy play against lands? Is it fast enough?

    • Robby

I’m not incredibly familiar with the legacy meta, but why this over Blood Moon? Blood Moon also has the advantage of screwing with duals/sol lands.

      • Kahai

        Card advantage? :O

        • Jakub S.

Kill duals > draw a card.

          • Kahai

But Land’s doesn’t relay heavily on duals.

There are way more utilitylands in the Lands Legacy deck than duals.
            From mtggolddish tech deck:
            Lands (36)
            1 Ancient Tomb
            1 Barbarian Ring
            4 Dark Depths
            1 Forest
            4 Ghost Quarter
            1 Glacial Chasm
            3 Grove of the Burnwillows
            1 Horizon Canopy
            1 Karakas
            3 Maze of Ith
            1 Misty Rainforest
            1 Sheltered Thicket
            2 Taiga
1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
            4 Thespian’s Stage
            1 Tranquil Thicket
            4 Wasteland
            1 Windswept Heath
            1 Wooded Foothills

Considering the primary way this decks win conditions is Dark Depths Thespian’s Stage combo, Blood Sun > Blood Moon.

      • TogetherAlone

Well this draws a card and literally makes over half the lands in that deck literally do nothing or nothing useful. Dark depths, maze of ith, glacial chasm, all the fetches do nothing. All the utility lands then only produce colourless.

        • Kahai

It also takes out their primary win condition too :O

  • Jared

I like how a blood moon type effect is in frontier now. Perhaps the meta will change to encourage one or two colored decks.

    • Shagoth

Oh yeah, that format still exists.
Actually, I just checked MTGgoldfish and the format is kind of unhealthy, as Ensoul Aggro, Aetherworks Marvel, and Atarka Red are all dominating with a whopping TWO DECKS EACH in the metagame!

      • Jared

The reason why there are so little frontier decks on mtg goldfish is because the only event organizers for frontier are Hareruya and other japanese stores. I think that a lot more Americans would be interested in the format because Blood Sun fixes the problem of perfect mana and introduces a hate card for fetch lands, which was one of the origional arguments why people didn’t want to play the format.

        • Shagoth

          Touche.

        • kukuc96

This is kinda bad hate for fetches as it only works on ones not played yet. And if you play a 4c deck you probably play Jace VP so you just ditch the rest.

          • Jared

Yes it doesn’t do anything on fetches already out, but the same problem also happens with Blood Moon. The only difference being that after playing Blood Sun all future fetches are useless instead of being mountains. Also, Blood Sun affects all man lands and deserts such as Ramunap Ruins.
