• Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

Not as exited as i thought i would be. I mean its ok, and has good value, and not that hard to “activate”, but its ability isnt the best. I could use it in my goblin sacrifice deck, but i expected better.

  • Happy The Cat

died under your control this turn is actually rather unique, compared to the other 4. Can easly see play as a commander thanks to that nice sack outlet.

    • Zombie

Dunno if he’s worth playing over Erebos. Might fit into the 99 fairly easily though.

      • Happy The Cat

well the two black gods are probably going to see completely different decks, this is a repeatable sac outlet. If and when this does get a deck, it will probably be built around that, not the slow bleed part. I’ve been working on a lot of Kormus Bell shenanigans for mono black for this block and so far this guy looks to be a Grave Pact and a Heartstone away from being both an Armageddon and a Plague Wind.

  • Ja Ja ja

    worst god

    • foxboy1000

Not at all. He is a great card.

    • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

      3rd worst
      2nd is kefnet
      1st is that red guy

      • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

        Rohanas is 4th
        and Okareta is the best

  • Soren Szilver

Sadly this might be the best amohnket God. It can directly fuel itself efficiently, casts early and can be triggered relatively easily by other cards as well.

  • PrissyRose

good power/toughness to cmc, easy to turn on, evasive, and dec sac outlet

I’d be excited to crack this in a pack tbh

  • ymmij X

This will work wonders in tandem with the green god. If you could swing it the white god too.

    • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

Yessssss get creatures with white, then sac them with black!!!!! I never thought of that (i know im dumb)

      • ymmij X

Plus black activates green and both help turn on white. Then greens ability turns white into a 5/6 trample doublestrike.

    • What!

      SUPERGODFRIENDS!!!

  • Julna Buras

Interesting. So unlike the others, his blocking and attacking is always conditional.

    • Butters

They’re all always conditional. If you’re tapped out, the white and green one can be stopped by your opponent killing a creature, the red one by making you draw a card, the blue by making you discard

  • Alex Egertsen

Sac, drain scry drop your opponent’s score by five on turn 4 in limited seems really good. This guy plays super well with scrounger and prized amalgam if joined with the red god.

  • Kyle K-glow Glover

cant he be played with marionette master in a control shell? that seems like it would be pretty fun, and probably some filigree crawlers. not good by any stretch, but again, fun.

  • Jalais

So how good would this be in Aristocrats?

    • WHAT!

Standard? Likely very good. Modern? I’m guessing too slow.

      • Happy The Cat

dunno, a three mana 4/6 that has to be double blocked and can only be killed by path and a few niche cards seems good enough to put a copy or two in modern. feels like a strong card to finish with.

  • WHAT!

Kind of makes removal a little awkward for your opponent. Usually you play it before attacks to clear the way but if you do you end up with probably a larger blocker.

  • Jay Kilian

Intriguing with bitterblossom. No net life loss and guaranteed token to sac. Hmm.

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Yeah. I wouldn’t mind spending 2 per turn to scry, ping my opponent, and enable my win condition. Plus, you’re almost guaranteed to have the mana because you spent it last turn for the blossom

    • Alexandre Donnart

He doesn’t die to Dismember. I think we’ll see him in Modern.

  • Michael Pepin

This is really good! Another of the Gods that is really easy to become a creature. Black wants to sacrifice a lot, so this is a really good mechanic. Makes it worth your while to sacrifice as well, and Menace means it has some evasion.

  • God Enel

Disappointed, the condition for it to attack is too harsh.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

      Eldrazi scions. Problem solved

      • Daniel Scott

And things with emblam I would guess.

        • Daniel Kaine Allen

Long story short, this guy loves BW tokens

          • KrakenHunter

I’m still interested in the long version of this.

          • Gord

            ttttttthhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssss ggggggggggguuuuuuuuuuuyyyyyyyyy llllllllllllooooooooooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeeessssssssss BBBBBBBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWW tttttttttoooooooooookkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnsssssssss

          • KrakenHunter

            Thanks, you appeased my mind.

          • Daniel Kaine Allen

I was going to elaborate, but I think @Gord did a better job than I could have. I just wouldn’t be doing him justice.

          • KrakenHunter

I understand and accept your reason with upmost respect.

    • Taylor Foley

May be a little harsh for standard, but seems easily doable in other formats

    • Thomas Luffman

Just pair it up with green and all the cards that put -1/-1 counters on one of your creatures and nest of scarabs. Get a 2 mana 3/4 and 2 more scarabs AND you can attack with him

  • Ryū

He’s alright. Big ol’ scryin’, life gainin’, sac outlet croc.

  • Brian Schmidt

This is actually the best god honestly. This one works as a great deterrent in that if you have him and a creature in play, the opponent will have to figure out if he wants to kill your creature on their turn or let you swing in with a 4/6 with Menace. So, chances are you are either gonna have a 4/6 Indestructible on your side and get to play your hand or get to sac the creature and attack with a said 4/6. Plus, this one has the cheapest activation ability of all the gods thus far.

addition: Also, Meren just fainted…once again.

    • Tyler Wilson

4/6 Menace doesn’t impress me in EDH and Meren has better sac outlets. She has better standards than to faint over something like this.

    • Taylor Foley

As a person who has been playing Meren since she came out, I’m not super impressed. But Bontu is 100% the best god

  • Scott Mc clean

Hello, Mr Bontu, Abzan Aristocrats Modern would love for you to stay with us.

  • Wonder why they showed us the crappy red and blue gods first when the other ones are at least okay

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

      Save the best for last?

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Actually, I think the rest are great. Also, the red and blue gods are fine.

  • Delipha

This is actually an additiional kill condition in Prossh. I like it,I hope it doesn’t cost a fortune cuz of Standart doe. Bontu and Rhonas are my target gods from this set.

    • Nanya

      They’re everyone’s targets.

      • Jacob Kodicovic

Hey, I also target Oketra because she’s super easy to turn on.

        • Nanya

          Dude!

          Phrasing!

      • MrAptronym

        More Hazoret for me! :D

  • Deadly Berry

Beautiful. I’m not sure if this is the strongest god, and I don’t really care; what I’m sure of is that this one is by far the most versatile of the five. Although best with tokens, do not underestimate his capacity to run in a control deck, flinging him from time to time, abusing his Menace and creatures with undying/persist/”when this dies” effects. The Scry is a nice bonus; unnecessary, but welcome nonetheless.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    FEED ME, SEYMORE!

  • Nanya

    This is actually really good.

Probably the best of the Desert Gods for how easy it is to pull off.

In a Meren deck, this fuels both Meren and itself with ease.

    Love it.

    • Tyler Wilson

I honestly wouldn’t bother with it in Meren.

Paying mana for your sac outlet means that it better be gaining real advantage. This is EDH; we have Ashnod’s Altar and Viscera Seer available. Compared to the Seer, the only edge of using Bontu as a sac outlet is miniscule chip damage, and 1B to ping everyone for 1 and gain a life is really, really not worth it in a deck that has as much to do as a well-built Meren deck.

So realistically, we’re only looking at Bontu as an attacker. Where I’m… not really impressed. Good attackers are very low on Meren’s priority list; either you’re trying to combo, and so it doesn’t matter, or you’re trying to control the board, and so everything is a good attacker because the first thing Meren does is take away everyone else’s creatures. Indestructible matters much less in EDH, a format with Swords and Deluge and Terminus, than it would in something like standard, and Bontu is only an attacker- he isn’t a reliable blocker in the situations where you need blockers since you have to lose a creature to turn him on.

If your Meren deck didn’t have enough sac outlets before, sure, you can look to this card. Why didn’t your Meren deck have enough sac outlets before and why didn’t you pick up Spawning Pits instead? If your Meren deck didn’t have enough good attackers before, sure, you can look to this card. Why aren’t you buying a Kokusho instead?

      • kozad

Exactly, Meren is meant to bleed you dry and keep the board clear, not head up an army.

      • Nanya

If you don’t know about those cards you can’t run those cards, right?

I’ve only been playing MTG for a short while, TBH.

        • Tyler Wilson

Spawning Pits is the only one of those cards that’s really obscure. Ashnod’s is well-known, as is Viscera Seer. Kokusho is old, but very popular in EDH and not without reason (though honestly I’ve never fit him into my Meren deck; Grey Merchant is just better now that we have Panharmonicon).

But yes, Meren’s got a ton of great cards you can look into. Bontu’s not /bad/ or anything, but he’s not really great either, not in a deck with as many awesome cards as Meren gets.

          • Nanya

            I run Meren-Infect, myself.

But, yeah, never heard of those cards, I’ll have to look into them sometime. Thanks. :D

  • Polis_Ohio

Dies to 2 Lightning Bolts and Soul-Scar Mage, worthless.

    • Taylor Foley

      Two bolts…

      • Polis_Ohio

        Troof. Can’t add.

    • malignant Phenomena

how exactly when it has indestructible?

      • Polis_Ohio

        Soul-scar mage.

    • the mad seer

and how many would you have left for my next threat?

      • Polis_Ohio

All of them with snapcaster mages.

    • imoth

      2 bolts and a soul-scar mage.

      • Polis_Ohio

Yes troof. Need to have that. Edited for reality.

    • Blahblahblahbla

Dies to Legacy Weapon.. not worth the paper it’s printed on!!

      • Polis_Ohio

Nope, not worth it, tear it up. Finally someone gets the joke. Must be a bad joke.

  • NothingSpecial

This one seems like it can be really good with the right synergy in constructed.

But it’ll be garbage in limited and I hope to never pull it.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

I can imagine just sac-ing your creatures when they’re about to die could net you enough value in the long run to make out good enough for limited, easy. There’s a fair amount of recursive creatures and creatures that create value when they die too

  • malignant Phenomena

    best God.

  • malignant Phenomena

I feel like the wording is a little wonkie … ‘a creature under your control dies this turn’ sounds better; also wrangle/AoT then sac their creatures as long as its under ur control when u do it he’s online… + menace… I don’t know about yall but to me menace seems almost as evasive as flying…

    • Sage

But then you include the future, and time meddling is a big no no.

  • galen150

eh, i like all the gods, but i don’t know if i’m gonna run any of em :/ this one is a sac outlet at least that can help give you some staying power. i’ll probably try him out in my mono black standard deck on xmage (it could do with a couple more sac outlets), if it works well and he’s cheap i might pick up like 2. still not thrilled by any off them :/

  • The Dracogenius

Waited on finalizing my mono black EDH deck to see if the black god is a sweet build around commander. In my opinion, this is worse than Erebos, since 4 additional devotion is the easiest thing ever, especially in black, while sacing every turn is not. Drawing cards is better than scry 1, bodies are pretty similar. Like the card, but since I did not want the almost strictly better Erebos in the first place, will go with my guts….

PHAGE IT IS, LET ME TOUCH YOU PLEASE!

    • dashkatae

You cast phage from the command zone and then lose the game due to her ability. Command zone is not your hand.

      • DastardlyStache

You can with Platinum Angel on the battlefield

      • Bleys

        Command Beacon.

  • Mr Black Mana

Probably my favorite god, both decently powerful and actually interesting and unique.

  • Shagoth

Probably the coolest of the gods, now that we’ve seen them all. Black usually has the best designs of the bunch in my book, the others are too simple aside from Hazoret.

  • Kaiser

This is my second favorite god card in magic for sure. His condition seems so flavorfull, sac mortals in my name if you want my help.

    • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

      Whats ya first one?

  • Uncertain Title

Combo this with Hidden Stockpile, and you never run out creatures.
I can see myself putting this one into my Zombie Deck ^ ^

  • kmk888

Bontu, you saucy crocodile. You know what I want. I’ll be back to playing Zulaport Cutthroat in Standard in no time.
