  • Coby Folk

what a waste of a cool character

    • Laws

What are you complaining about? This is an amazing card that finally gives payoffs for both Vampires and aristocrat strategies.

      • Coby Folk

I imagine there’s far more productive things you could be doing than running this in any sort of aristocrat deck.

It’s not even that great of a “payoff”.

        • Karamatic

Ikr, your losing a creature before your even gaining those so called ‘tokens’.

          • Laws

You all have no imagination. First of all, she’s probably being played in a deck w/Yahenni that can quickly eat some creatures you made turn 1-3 and immediately boost her toughness in response to a removal piece. Second, it looks like people might want to play her in green w/Blossoming Defense, Journey to Eternity, etc.

It’s moronic to complain about her not being a 2/2 or a 3/3; she would still die to basic removal spells. She’s going to slot into a grind-y mid-range deck that doesn’t care about being aggro anyway.

          • Chaospyke

They’re right though, She’s just not good enough. I mean what would you take out for her? Presumably she goes into a token deck with sac outlets, but the way she’s made she doesn’t actually increase the number of tokens you get, just recycles them. The most common removal spells right now are (standard) are Vrasaka’s contempt, Hour of Glory, Fatal push and L-Strike. So half the removal spells will exile her stopping her from doing her main thing. L-strike will kill her early before she gets built.

She pairs well with onesided removal like Vona’s Hunger and Dusk//Dawn but at that point she’s kinda win more, because one you play those spells, you should be hitting your opponent directly anyway

    • Edward

How is it a waste? The card has great flavor and great abilities. The fact that it is a 4 mana 1/1 is irrelevant when she grows quickly and at least replaces herself when she dies. Most removal could kill her no matter the power so that isn’t really a factor. Her abilities are too strong for anything less than 4 mana. Giving her more power would also push her too hard since she would more than replace herself with no set up. Running multiples is more of an upside since you bring out a second one and get the value from the first going to the grave. Any creature dying triggers her first ability so mutual sacrifice effects are great with her. She makes Ascend easy to trigger as well. She might seem a little slow for aristocrats but with a good sac outlet she can do some real work. I literally see no downside

      • Coby Folk

“Her abilities are too strong for anything less than 4 mana.” Absolutely not. This may very well be the least appropriately stat-weighted (in the negative direction) mythic rare of the last couple years.

She needed to be 3cmc, be 2/2, OR have flying. But since none of those happened she’s the perfect storm of awful.

        • DJ Pad

Agreed, 4-mana for a 1/1 with lifelink on an empty board is staggeringly awful. Personally I think it should have been 3-mana if they wanted it played ever.

  • Jalais

Any home for this in Aristocrats?

    • DJ Pad

      In what format?

      • Jalais

Modern? Commander? Kitchen table? I just want this to not be as trash as it is.

        • DJ Pad

I’m sure it could be 1 of the 99 in an EDH deck with a bunch of sac effects + tokens + grave pact effects. Terrible as a commander though as the dying trigger doesn’t happen if you move it to the command zone. I sincerely doubt it sees modern play.

        • manguydude

The more I think about it, she has great potential in edh as a fun/different commander. There aren’t any BW commanders that have this potent a token effect when they die. I imagine a BW token reanimator build, with anthems like Dictate of Heliod, auto equip stuff like hero’s blade, and tons of recursion like dread return, unburial rites, phyrexian reclamation etc. You’d never let her go to the command zone, and just keep bringing her back from the graveyard and sacing her. The reanimator stuff also works with high cost token creators like Myr Battlesphere, and white has the best anthems, so I think it could be really fun. Anyway I think she is better than she looks at first read.

  • Caleb Halbrook

Maybe this is dece in bw god pharaoh gift… like if there’s an aristocrats style bw gpg deck? Maybe abzan to run the new reanimator land, just need a free sac outlet

    • Caleb Halbrook

Actually would that work? Gpg makes tokens right? Tokens technically die right

      • Edward

Yes they go to the graveyard then cease to exist

    • Laws

We already have a free sac outlet in Yahenni

      • Caleb Halbrook

Prob a couple yahenni but we might need a non legendary sac outlet so we can play a 4 of…also a satyr wayfinder/grisley salvage type effect would be awesome…explore might be somewhat good for this effect but maybe too slow. anybody think benefaction of rhonas is dece? Can find the reanimator aura and stock graveyard?

        • Laws

I agree w/the salvage effect. We need something that let’s us not rely on blue cards like Chart A Course and Champion of Wits to get things in the graveyard.

    • Caleb Halbrook

The main problem with elenda in gpg deck is that as is it’s just worse than the angel. Basically an angel that just makes tokens without the evasion but you have to wait for it to die to get the tokens. Otherwise is a strictly worse beatstick that doesn’t pump. You do have the potential for more tokens though. Maybe you can play them together with elenda being the 5th and 6th copies of the angel in uwb gpg

if your building around elenda as an alternate win con to the angel variant, we could try an aristocrats variation of gpg that can extend into abzan colors and be a grindy reanimator value deck that can play the reanimator aura… idk if gpg is best as a grindy deck since it already wins very well with the combo-y uw/uwb angel plan… we definitely would need more graveyard support in abzan colors but who knows. Maybe renegade rallier can finally see some standard play

Not sure if elenda is that great coming down as a 1/1 on turn four that requires sac support already on board. Might be better as a combo piece coming down as a 4/4 lifelink that nobody wants to kill hangarback walker style but idk… again probably just strictly worse than the angel. What do you guys think

  • Dr. Burn Crow

She’s like a murder piñata filled with blood-sucking candy vampires.

  • Chaospyke

Nice Card, Wish she had either higher p/t or another Keyword cuz that first turn she’s in she’s not doing much.

  • Benjamin Bjørn

Any chance at all of living the dream with Elenda, metallic mimic and winding constrictor in an Abzan shell?

  • Alex

I like to think that she’s made up of a lot of tiny vampires standing on each-others’ shoulders in a normal-sized suit…

    • Dr. Burn Crow

I love this joke more than you could ever know.

    • Dave

      +100

    • Zombie

I like to think she’s a playable card.

      Then I read it.

  • Hmmm… remove Yahenni in BW vamps for this? He never quite pulls his weight in matches imo

    • TezzeretofCarmot21

You could use Yahenni as a sac outlet to sac her and make a bunch of vampires or to kill other creatures to pump her. So her and Yahenni work well.

  • Tolle

Wow… what a waste of a legend. Absolutely useless as a commander. Remember that if you put her in the command zone she never dies and therefor don’t get her last trigger.

    • Sylvio Tenenbra

Phyrexian Reclamation and the problem is done for?

      • Shagoth

That’s a card you have to reliably get, though.

      • Tolle

Great… try drawing that 1 card in your 99 reliably.

        • Sylvio Tenenbra

Tutors and redundancy in these colors are plentiful. Citadel Siege, Tortured Existence, Ravos, etc.
This is not something ridiculous like “Tier 1” commander material, but you gotta have more imagination than that.

          • Tolle

As someone who runs recursion decks quite frequently you really don’t want to rely on recursion to get your commander back if you don’t have to. With counter spells and cards like krosain grip in the format you could get really blown out with a single spell.

          • Sylvio Tenenbra

I wasnt aware that hate cards and removal make certain strategies and cards worthless. At times a well timed spell can devastate a game, but thats Magic for you. Calling her an absolutely useless commander is quite an hyperbole.

          • Tolle

No, it can’t make a strategy worthless. But when you rely on your commander and suddenly your commander is trapped forever in the graveyard because your recursion was stopped, that can shut you down. Which makes he far more vulnerable to hate strategies than regular recursion decks like Meren

    • Shagoth

I mean, it’s another Vampire Aristocrats BW legend, they were getting about as tired as Combat Boros at this point.

      • Tolle

What other BW vampire legend do we have that actually works on vampire tribal?

        • Shagoth

I meant to separate those categories.
          For Orzhov Vamps, we got
          Vona, Butcher of Magan
          Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter
          This dude
          And for aristocrats, we have
          This dude
          Athreos, God of Passage
          Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim
          Ghost Council of Orzhova
          (arguably) Ravos, Soultender
          Teysa, Orzhov Scion
          Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter

I think we have enough BW aristocrats, that’s for sure.

          • Tolle

But we don’t have any BW vampire tribal commanders. Those first two don’t count. Just because they are vampire legends doesn’t mean they have any synergy with other vampires. And if you check my first commend that is what I was lamenting.

          • Hedronal

As a werewolf player, I must again point out that vampires have at least one tribal commander that includes WB. If that’s not enough, then as much as I want to sympathize, I really don’t. You have something.

          • Tolle

            A. I never said werewolves didn’t have it worse. But werewolves aren’t in this set for me to complain about it or trust me, I would be.
            B. Just because we have a mardu vampire commander doesn’t mean we don’t need an orzov one. And I stick to my comment that this is not one.

          • Hedronal

We agree then on the points of werewolves having it worse and that this isn’t a tribal commander (more than a little bit). Need though? I find that to be a bit much. Wanting one is easily fair, but it’s a jump to need. It’s also near the point of semantics though.

          • Tolle

One of the goals of commander should be to allow people the option to play any arch type that colors support. White black supports vampires so we should have the option to play WB vampires if they want. Which means we need a WB vampire commander.

          • Hedronal

It still has a tribal option already in Edgar Markov. Just WB or no, the need is covered. Not well, but it’s a good point to cover, not a need. The tribes that need commanders are the ones that have no commander already.

That said, two for two in a tribal block featuring that tribe and colors not being tribal? I want to join you in the salt about it.

          • Tolle

I disagree Edgar Markov covers it. Adding red changes way too much about it. Either you weaken the mana base or you never cast your commander.

          • Hedronal

With all the things in commander that get flexible colors of mana, I doubt the base will weaken much. Even if not, he’s still doing as much tribal as Elena (disappointing still). More color combo variety is better, but it is not a need. That’s the point we differ on, it is just not a need.

Semantics though. It’s still dumb to not make a wholly tribal commander in a tribal block.

    • Happy The Cat

you can just choose if you want her to go to the grave, if she has as many counters as you want just pop her for tokens. also it’s not like it’s hard for black/white to get back a three drop creature.

      • Tolle

That is true, but it isn’t the best thing in the world either. You either have to forgo the counters or hope you draw a recursion spell that isn’t countered.

    • gorgonshead

Going to the command zone is a replacement effect. It replaces the part of the “die” keyword where you put the creature in the graveyard with “put this into the command zone instead”. Elenda still dies, she just doesn’t go to the graveyard; instead she goes to the command zone.

Source: Child of Alara works, also an L1 in FL.

      • Tolle

        Incorrect.
700.4. The term dies means “is put into a graveyard
        from the battlefield.”

If your commander doesn’t go to the graveyard it doesn’t die and so doesn’t trigger. So both this vampire and Child of Alara don’t work.

  • TezzeretofCarmot21

    Elenda vs. Vona: Who wins?

    • Happy The Cat

I mean one says “Destroy target nonland permanent” and the other doesn’t, think that fight is kinda already decided.
as for commanders, both are okay, Vona want’s a lifegain deck and Elenda wants a reanimator, neither really overlap much.

    • Rildor

Well one of them is bad and the other one is Elenda..so…

  • Shagoth

Well, you have to get cute with this for commander, and I like getting cute. I think this would not be a vampire deck, because this EDH deck needs ways for creatures to die more than most. And it DEFINITELY needs a way for creatures to be reanimated/returned more than most. Seems delicate given how reliant this is upon the graveyard. It also seems fun.

  • YetAnotherGuest

Two words: Alesha Commander, you already kill your creatures anyway for value so it’s going to be pumping like hell and then when it dies it becomes a 1/1 in your grave that Alesha can just grab back. :D

  • manguydude

I was a little disappointed at first, but I don’t think she’s as bad as she looks on first glance. Worse case scenario she represents 2 life and two chumps (or a chump and a removal spell). Not great, but she does scale pretty well. Because her ability counts her power, not the counters, anthem effects and equipment work. I could actually see her leading a BW token reanimator edh deck; imagine hero’s blade, gift of immortality, and a sac outlet – 4 tokens every turn! Anyway, I think she presents an interesting deck building challenge, and I’m glad to see something a little different than the standard “gain life to kill things” BW legends we’ve had lately.

  • galen150

    yahenni got a buddy >:)

  • Hedronal

As she’s the original vampire of Ixalan (or Torrezon, technically), I expected more from her. After all this time, shouldn’t she be visibly powerful in some way?
