• Happy The Cat

tako spotted!!! I see that gigantic looming figure!
also is it just me or is this worded weirdly?

    • Dewill

It’s not that weird but i know what you mean. It’s cuz it starts out with “Return…” A verb in the beginning of a sentence always makes the sentence sound weird and incorrect even though it is not. In english we are so used to the subject then verb compliment

      • Happy The Cat

no, the reason it sounds weird is that is ways the zone that the creatures go to before what creatures are being sent there, normally it would say “return each creature with toughness less than or equal to the number of islands you control to their owners hands.”
They wrote the sentence in a clunky way.

        • Hedronal

I think the wording is to make the larger block of the text not separate the smaller portions, so the small and simple things are already said.

  • MBase

Okay well this looks more like Marit Lage than any previous card. Still doesn’t make sense why Nahiri would pull Marit Lage, though. She has every reason in the world to pull Emrakul.

    • SmolderingButcher

Here’s an idea most people haven’t suggested. Why does it have to be just Marit Lage or just Emrakul. Why couldn’t she have brought both?

      • Seregios MH

Wizards wouldn’t put two large and completely unrelated creatures in the same set to serve as antagonists.

        • SmolderingButcher

Marit Lage is probably an eldrazi and they put two eldrazi in the last set.

          • Seregios MH

            Marit Lage isn’t an eldrazi.

          • SmolderingButcher

YEAH OKAY. Believe what you want man. You’re right the fact that it was an undefined being of extreme power that could move between planes and somehow become “imprisoned” on dominaria doesn’t sound a bit fishy to you? Marit Lage is totally and eldrazi.

          • SmolderingButcher

If anything she may be a protoeldrazi.

      • MrAptronym

Because that would be a messy and unnecessary script.

        • SmolderingButcher

          It would certainly be tentacley.

  • Daniel Rouze

Plot twist Marit was on the plane all along, Emmy showing up gives her the hebbie jebboos and then they fight

  • Arcus Diabolus

Ok, so this is a tad terrifying.

  • EJ

Snapcaster, flashing back something in your graveyard.
Then Engulf the Shore, putting Snapcaster back in your hand.
Then Snapcaster, flashing Engulf the Shore, putting Snapcaster back in your hand.
Then Snapcaster, flashing back something else in your graveyard.

    • Happy The Cat

see now Crush of Tentacles work just so much better with snapcaster because you would have an 8/8 to beat with

    • Hedronal

You would need more Engulf the Shores though, because flashback exiles the card being cast.

  • Ryū

We’re going to need a bigger boat.

  • Chaospyke

Well this is a nice little card.I’m not ablue player so it doesn’t super sync with me, but I expect to be up against it in standard for sure.

  • UW

Can you smell the control waves coming?

    • Happy The Cat

yeah! Crush of Tentacles is such a cool card right?

  • DJ Pad

    This seems really bad…

    • Nick Hannah

How? I see no way that this card fails. If it misses a few creatures, so what?

      • DJ Pad

If it misses a few creatures you just played and expensive unsummon or a very bad evacuation. Whelming wave saw no play and that was much more abuseable.

        • eltratzo

whelming wave was also a sorcery. big difference.

  • Deadly Berry

This looks nice for mono U. The cost isn’t something to be scared of and after 5 islands you can expect it to return almost anything in the format. With 3 islands you can get rid of most if not all aggro threats. Still, it’s not better than Evacuation because it restricts your non island usage, but still good as sideboard on mono U.

    • Happy The Cat

but where will this see play? any deck that could play this could run Crush of Tentacles and get a game ending 8/8

      • Deadly Berry

Hmm yea true there, but this one seems more like sideboard when aggro is too much to handle, because Crush of tentacles is 6cmc and sorcery.

        • Happy The Cat

bro crush is 5 cmc unless you are not playing it for full value

          • De’Elgathor

I’m curious, what 0 mana spell are you consistently casting to make crush castable turn 5?

          • Happy The Cat

the same one you plan on casting with this if you think this will have more value

          • De’Elgathor

I think this will usually have more value, since it’s instant speed and cheaper costed, even without additional spells. I view this as an Aetherize kind of card where you cast this in response to opponent’s combat and clear their attackers out, not a sorcery speed clear the board and maybe get a token. This is also a better topdeck if hand hate becomes a thing in the next set or block (instant speed, doesn’t rely on surge to get full value)

          • Hedronal

No seriously, what 0 mana spell?

      • MrAptronym

This is cheaper and also an instant.

        • Happy The Cat

and can miss and can’t give you an 8/8

          • Mr.Mayhem631

And doesn’t let you leave up mana and costs more.

          • Happy The Cat

            and you get an 8/8
all right have we covered all the differences between these two cards? yes? okay it settled
this costs more and is an instant but doesn’t win you the game with an 8/8 and can miss

          • MrAptronym

            This doesn’t cost more?

I’d say this is better than crush. This doesn’t seem like a massively poweful card, but better than Crush. First of all, the difference in CMC is a big deal. Six versus four is very significant. The surge cost of five is generally going to require even more mana.

Crush being a sorcery is a huge disadvantage. In order to get that 8/8 you need to cast another spell, then the 5 mana for Crush on your turn. That means it isn’t terribly reliable when you topdeck it, but it also means you will probably be left without any mana on their turn. Your 8/8 doesn’t have any kind of evasion, so they will just cast some of their creatures back while you are tapped out. Octopus either gets chumped for several turns if your opponent thinks they’re winning anyway, or outright killed off while you can’t do anything. A vanilla 8/8 can win you games, but it isn’t a terribly *good* win condition, I’d rather just play with a better card.

In a deck that is very heavy on blue, this card is going to hit all but the largest creatures. Sure, it can wiff on some, but you can sideboard out the card if you are facing a deck that is going to cause trouble there. I’d take a card that is a bit conditional over a card that costs 50% more most days.

    • Kevin Johnstone

They should print an Urbog, Tomb, for all the colors =)

(all lands are islands, all lands are plains, all lands are forests, all lands are mountains)

      • MrAptronym

That ‘all lands are islands’ one would see eternal play.

      • Jazzyboy1

The ‘all lands are mountains’ one would be veeeeery nice. (it’d make goblins a lot more competitive in Modern again, because Goblin King)

‘All lands are islands’ might make High Tide much more popular in Eternal formats all of a sudden.

      • Hedronal

If only. I’m one of those that would want that for the symmetry alone, before other reasons even become a factor.

  • Nebulium

Late game evacuation for U cheaper seems good. Can even be one midgame depending on the matchup. Of course this is only for mono U or U with a splash of something but this is by no means a bad card.

  • NotanInsider

is this marit lage in the background?

    • Zachary Cooper

Marit Lage being in the story (if he is) would almost confirm him in FTV:Lore. Also MARIT LAGE!

      • Seregios MH

        *her

  • Alexander Malinin (Cfyz)

About this vs Crush of Tentacles: Engulf the Shore comes two whole turns earlier, on the opponent’s turn and [arguably] has a lesser chance to hit your own finisher.

  • Jazzyboy1

This should have been ‘Return all creatures to their owners’ hands except for Horrors, Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents.’

    • Bige Boiy

and avatars, because marit lage is an avatar

      • Mika Gouzee

You won’t often have 20+ islands, marit lage, AND the need to cast this.

        • jsuaidkfndimd

          clearly you’re playing blue wrong

  • Dominic Ng

    edh goodies?

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

Fun fact: tentacles always foreshadow happy fun times.

    • Happy The Cat

      amen brother

    • Ian

      Merit leige

      • Happy The Cat

sorry but Marit Lage is still kinda frozen on Dominaria

        • MrAptronym

Do you have a source on that? Last time we heard from her was Ice-Age I thought?

          • justindeltora

yeah she is stuck in the ice age of magic. gone the way of the sabertooth and dire wolf.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

No, she isn’t. The ice age is over and the ice she was in is melted.

        • eidorian1212

” During the Ice Age, she was frozen in the heart of a glacier. It is unknown whether she survived and what happened to her or her body once the Ice Age ended.” from the mtg salvation wiki

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Rovkir Hexus

Soo… worse Scourge of the Fleets for 3U and no body? Okay.

    • Kevan Kramer

This is a much much better card than Scourge of the Fleets.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

        Not so many muches.

      • Rovkir Hexus

It hits your own stuff, while Scourge doesn’t. I could be unfairly judging it, but that’s my analysis.

  • Ian

OMG I WAS RIGHT!!!! IT’S MERIT LEIGE

    • Necrachilles

      Says who?

    • justindeltora

or its the thing in the ice?

      • Ian

No they showed us what that was. And merit liege fits with the story… Not only that but it is what is causing the madness on the plane

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    Gitrog?

  • TogetherAlone

Why would you use this over TiTi? You are probably triggering its flip on the same turn you can cast this anyway.

    • MrAptronym

      What is a TiTi?

      • Nick Hannah

        “Thing in the ice”

      • TogetherAlone

        Sorry, Thing in the Ice

        • MrAptronym

I am just really bad at acronyms.

    • Mr.Mayhem631

Instant speed, doesn’t die to removal, takes less setup.

      • TogetherAlone

Guess what, TITI can also be activated at instant speed, also leaves you with a 7/8 to swing with the next turn or same turn. With cantrips this is the easiest thing to flip ever.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

Still dies to removal, still takes some setup, and you will not have a perfect cantrip filled hand in standard.
          Also less predictable.

  • Nick Hannah

    I love it.

  • Nick Hannah

In order for me to believe that this is Marit Lage, I would have to forget that Krakens are on Innistrad, that Krakens exist in mythologies and cultures, and that Marit Lage is trapped on Dominaria. Why do people insist on making mountains out of mole hills?

    • Minizem

Same. Just accept its not and move on.

    • eltratzo

remember the “nahiri is avacyn” craze?
this is just the same. let them have fun. they’ll dissappear once it has been proven false by the story. (or proven true. whatevs.)

    • eidorian1212

Marit Lage was trapped during the Ice Age of Dominaria, the Ice Age ended already, it is not known whether she survived, and if she did, there’s no information of where she is.

    • MrAptronym

I am not sold on that being Marit Lage yet, but it is worth noting Marit Lage can travel between planes, and though she was trapped in the ice, the ice age is over. Plus she was an otherworldly tentacled beast that had a cult dedicated to her, so she does fit perfectly here.

      • eltratzo

She would if innistrad didn’t have it’s fair share o evil mindbending stuff without looking to other planes. this is the plane of griselbrand wrexial and ormendahl there are probably more where they came from.
Yes it might be Marit. it also might be something inherent to a crapsack gothhorror world in which humans only survived because a ancient vampire did a whole lot of work to make sure they did.
Let’s just wait till the story tells us who or what truly is behind all this.
No need to descend into Madness beforehand ^^

        • MrAptronym

I’m not even saying I think it’s her, all I am saying is that when people say she is trapped on Dominaria, that isn’t at all true. I haven’t seen much convincing evidence pointing at her, but I certainly haven’t seen any evidence suggesting it’s not her either.

          • eltratzo

that I can agree with. ^^
the only reason I see against her is that she is not needed from a story standpoint. innistrad is scary enough on its own.

that said, I have no problem if it IS her, as long it is well presented in story.

      • Nick Hannah

Aren’t you forgetting the amount of token creatures in this set?

        • MrAptronym

          how does that relate?

          • Nick Hannah

You complained that the card is worse them another card, even though it hits most tokens.

          • MrAptronym

No, I have not. I’ve only defended the card as better than Crush of Tentacles here. Honestly I think this is one of the best mass bounce cards in the game for the decks it fits in.

Also the comment you replied to was me weighing whether or not Marit Lage seemed a likely antagonist for the block. I think you just responded to the wrong comment.

          • Nick Hannah

Oh, sorry, Disqus doesn’t show the whole conversation so I assumed you were someone else.

  • yolksoup

    :D evacation!!!!!

  • Zombie

Honestly, this might even be Modern playable. In decks like Blue Moon this could be an absolute and utter blowout that their opponent can never come back from.

In Blue Moon, with a Blood Moon out, this could just strand all of their creatures in their hand for the rest of the game.

I know that sounds crazy, but in a U/W Control shell or Blue Moon, this is basically an Instant-speed Wrath for the same CMC.

Play this for Instant-Wrath against non-Affinity decks, play Hurkyll’s Recall for Affinity decks.

I’m totally behind this card. Very powerful effect.

  • Minizem

    Warning: EDH shenanigans incoming.

    • MrAptronym

For both flavor and power, I am immediately putting this into my Thada Adel EDH.

  • Ghhhh

    Hi

  • Adolf Nobel

Still trapped in ice? Yeah right

    • Mr.Mayhem631

Marit Lage is no longer trapped, yes. No, there is no evidence it is her.

    • Nick Hannah

Marit Lage escaped briefly, the rest is a total mystery.(On Dominaria, besides, no need to jump at this. This article was probably made when Ice Age was in standard.)

  • Thomas

Read the flavor text on the ladt clue token. Marit Lage confirmed.

    • Thomas

      last*

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      Please explain.

      • Thomas

If I’m not mistaken marit lage got a cult about her. So i’d guess “louder chanting when the tide rises” refers to that.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

          Not an interplanar cult.
At this point, the cult could be worshipping a lot of things.

          • Thomas

            That’s true though

    • Velvet Wurm

Don’t worry, Marit Lage will be in FTV: Lore (you can tell because it includes a token and Marit Lage tokens are expensive).

  • Mykael W Mitchell

I’ll join the wild mass guessing. It’s Emrakul. Y’know because tentacles n stuff

    • Velvet Wurm

Nah, it’s an octupus or leviathan, it has a mouth (look to the right of the tower).

  • kmk888

Evacuation-Mutilate is rock solid. It will see play in Constructed.

  • Tommy Yagami

Why couldn’t this Kraken have gotten a card?
