  • James

Sole reason why Regisaur Alpha was printed.

    • DJ Pad

Otepec huntmaster is another card that just got a lot better.

I definitely think we’ll see some standard dino decks coming up. It does suffer from not having haste naturally or having this trigger on ETB, as I think a decent amount of the time it’s just going to eat a removal spell and provide nothing of value. A little sad that it doesn’t allow lands to be played, but I think that’s pretty consistent with red’s “exile the top card” effects.

      • Marvin Sürig

Yes but you can play a BlackGreenRed Reanimation Deck with it and the Red Gearhulk.
Bomat Courier and hope of Hope of Ghirapur to get Journey to Eternity rolling and you get nice reanimation Targets while ramping one mana with Journey.

        • Jay Kilian

Or just use God Pharoah’s Gift.

          • Cody Daniels

Would it be worth playing Journey To Eternity with this? If R/G aggro, just need to filter for that black.

          • Happy The Cat

well, he said Jund Reanimation, not r/g aggro. which makes sense, seeing as this 6 mana creature doesn’t have haste makes him a bad candidate for aggro rushing.

          • Marvin Sürig

            That works too.

  • Nyos

EDH nightmare fuel. Especially since Gishath will be running plenty of “extra combat” spells…

    • DJ Pad

Pretty spicy considering it’s each player, not just the one you’re attacking. Only downside is having to play mono-red if you want it as a commander.

      • Shagoth

This thing provides card advantage. Mono red decks in commander can be pretty great.

        • DJ Pad

I mean, they CAN be. It doesn’t change the fact that red is the weakest colour in EDH.

          • Shagoth

I think people over exaggerate how bad red is in EDH.

          • DJ Pad

I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m simply saying it’s the weakest. If this guy was R/G he’d be much better for EDH

    • Alex

Probably going to become a popular new red chaos/steal EDH staple like Molten Primordial.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    Now THIS is pod racing!

    • Mason Lee

“Yippeeeee” – Anakin skywalker 32 BBY

      • Dr. Burn Crow

        You….I like you

      • Dr. Burn Crow

        Let’s try spinning, that’s a good trick!

  • Chaospyke

Oh my what a beauty. This and Ghalta make me wanna try R/G aggro

    • eltratzo

a 6 mana beater without haste doesn’t really scream “aggro” for me.

      • Chaospyke

Otepec Huntmaster finds your lack of faith disturbing.
To be fair though, This guy is a one of finisher

        • Rocket Raccoon

          Otepec and Regisaur Alpha!

  • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

    Where’s me hasty boi?

    • Dr. Burn Crow

I believe this is Sparkyboi, and he is radiant.

      • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

        Never a truer word said

  • Tiago Abner

With two different Haste-giving Dino synergy cards, this may be playable once Energy rotates.

  • Edward

This is not what I was expecting from the Red Elder Dinosaur but it is great. It plays in to the spellcasting part of Red while sticking to the randomness and aggression Red likes. Now we just need the Blue Elder Dinosaur and the Primal Calamity. I just hope the Blue one doesn’t end up being mil based because that would ruin an otherwise good cycle.

  • Blahblahblahbla

“Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark

All the dinosaurs are running wild

Someone let T. Rex out of his pen

I’m afraid those things’ll harm me

‘Cause they sure don’t act like Barney

And they think that I’m their dinner, not their friend

    Oh no”

  • Happy The Cat

Mayael likes it cause it’s cute and fat.
Yidris and Wanderer like it for Storm and Storm-like attacking.
Gishath likes it because the word in the middle-right is also next to a gold sticker.

  • Jordan

I hate it because it has no evasion. I love it because it’s a Spinosaurus.

  • Caleb Halbrook

This is pretty meh in standard tbh…its kind of just worse than red gearhulk… less evasion, not really card advantage if you don’t want to cast the cards right away or they’re not useful and can’t end the game like gearhulk can… yes free spells is cool but its too unpredictable and inconsistent to be relied on as a win con… that’s my opinion anyway… killer art though

    • Edward

You know you are talking about Red right? It is supposed to act and worry about the consequences later. You can potentially get 2 free spells a turn with this. Combustible Gearhulk might get you 3 cards when you play itor it might deal some damage. It might do nothing. It is definitely better in combat than this because of First Strike but overall this gives more value and Dinosaurs have haste enablers. Also this can come out earlier because Dinosaurs have ramp.

  • Shagoth

Finally, I’ve been waiting for the top exile mechanic to have the words “Without paying their mana cost.” It always felt so bad just exiling a card that’s one mana too much, ugh. This is probably the best of the elder dinos so far as commanders. White’s just a big dude, black’s can’t even really function, and though Green is great to be built around, this still does help you outside of dealing dealing damage and not dying. You get more cards and play more and you do it for free!

    • DJ Pad

Ghalta is actually probably not bad given that he can 2-hit (or doublestrike/berserk) kill and his cost reduction ability helps with the commander tax when re-casting him.

      • Shagoth

True, true. I always forget about commander damage because my playgroup doesn’t want to bother with keeping track of damage from and to each player and commander.

  • Darkray Accel

    Me likes.

  • Mini Zem

Notice that this does not require you to cast the cards by the end of the turn, so you can do it on another turn. However, you do have o cast them as a result of the trigger resolving, meaning you can’t do it on, say, your opponents turn, or during your main phase.

    • DJ Pad

You seem to contradict yourself. Since you have to cast them (or choose not to cast them) on resolution of this ability, how would you do it on another turn? I’m pretty sure you have to either cast them when this trigger resolves or forgo casting them ever.

      • Mini Zem

It specifically states “then you may cast any number of nonland cards exiled this way”, meaning it doesn’t matter when they were exiled, as long as it was exiled that way.

        • Kim Costa

“If you cast any of the exiled cards, you do so as part of the resolution of the triggered ability. You can’t wait to cast them later in the turn. Timing permissions based on a card’s type are ignored, and the spells resolve before blockers are declared.” – from gatherer

to be fair though, this is from the 19th of january xD

        • Kim Costa

“Any cards not cast, including land cards, remain in exile. They can’t be cast on later turns, even if Etali attacks again.”

          for the extra certainty

    • Happy The Cat

Sorry, but no. look at this like cascade, exile the top cards of libraries, then cast those spells, it ignores timings for Creatures and Sorceries but you can’t just cast them whenever. If you don’t use them you just leave them in exile, unable to be used.

      • DJ Pad

I think he’s arguing that if you choose not to cast something you exile with one trigger, you CAN choose to cast them on a subsequent trigger (presumably the next time he attacks) since they were all “exiled this way”. I’m pretty sure this doesn’t work though.

For example, maybe you exile a wrath of god on an attack, and choose not to cast it. He’s suggesting if you attack again 3 turns later you can choose to cast that wrath of god that you skipped the first time around.

        • Mini Zem

That is exactly right DJ Pad, and it will work that way, specifically because of how it is worded.

    • Deadly Berry

You must cast them after the ability resolves, note the “then you may cast”. You can choose not to, but if you do they will remain exiled and you won’t be able to interact with them later on.

      • Mini Zem

It specifically states “then you may cast any number of nonland cards exiled this way”, meaning it doesn’t matter when they were exiled, as long as it was exiled by that ability.

        • DJ Pad

I believe “this way” refers to that specific instance of the trigger, not all previous triggers.

          • Mini Zem

No, the card was exiled with Etali’s trigger, therefore any card exiled with an Etali trigger can be cast then. There have been cards that have worked this way before, but I just can’t think of them at the moment.

          • DJ Pad

I don’t think that is correct. For example, I found this judge answer with Hellcarver demon (closest comparison to this type of effect/wording I could find):

            Q: If Hellcarver Demon’s
triggered ability resolves once normally and some of the playable cards
are left in exile, and on the next turn the ability again triggers, can
the cards still in exile from the previous trigger be played? Or can
only the six cards exiled by the current trigger be played?

A: Nope, you’ll cast them all at once as the trigger resolves or
never at all. “This way” in the card’s text means “by this ability right
now”. If you could store them up for future swings, it’d say you could
play “cards exiled by Hellcarver Demon”.

If Etali let you play previously exiled cards when triggered, it would say:
“then you may cast any number of nonland cards exiled by Etali Primal Storm without paying their mana costs”

          • Mini Zem

I see. It appears I was mistaken.

          • Stephen

This guy’s effect is mostly for multiplayer games where 3+ players exile their top card, then you get to play them all for free, I believe that’s why it’s worded the way it is. But still useful in 1v1

        • Deadly Berry

That would be the case if the ability read as:
“Exile the top card of each player’s library.

You may cast nonland cards exiled with X without paying their mana cost.”
See the difference? When an ability has commas or dots inbetween it that means all actions must be resolved as part of the same ability without a pause. When they are written in different paragraphs you can consider them appart of each other.

  • Deadly Berry

This Dino is so beautiful, I never felt compeled to make a mono Red EDH deck until now.

  • Murilo Mazza

    I wish this had haste

    • Happy The Cat

I mean you could literally take out your Anger to fix that.

    • Nanya

Yeah, it’s not like Red has lands, artifacts, enchantments and creatures that give haste after all.

      • Murilo Mazza

Let me know when you are able to do this in a friday night and win the championship, then send me your list

        • Shagoth

Let me know when you win any FNM championship with a commander deck without blue.

          • Murilo Mazza

I will never win that, I guess I will never play commander, specially in a friday evening

          • Shagoth

*You make fun of someone for not playing competitively
*I sarcastically point out how CMDR isn’t competitive
*You jokingly say that because your commander deck isn’t competitive you might as well give up, implying that you don’t believe CMDR is competitive

            What happened?

          • Murilo Mazza

I don’t know. I just commented “I wish this had haste”.

          • Shagoth

Yeah, sorry you kind of got barraged by people with needless sarcasm on our part.

  • Giby86 .

    It does WHAT

  • TezzeretofCarmot21

Red is stealing our topdecks now. Hide the children

  • Nanya

    Big stompy?

My Gruul stompy EDH deck wants.

What do I remove for this?

    • Happy The Cat

land, who needs em? gruul smash, land no smash. Well, Raging Ravine smash, but most land no smash.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

Y u no teach land to smash? Land like smash, too. Many ways teach land to smash. Crow show you! Crow know way!

        • Cthulhooo

Ask Skaarg. Skaarg know how to make land smash. Many land a turn can smash. Very good, very gruul.

  • Zombie

    That… uh… That’s quite a pushed ability.

Too bad it’s on a dorky 6 drop that has no evasion, no Haste, etc.

The biggest point in its favor is that it’s an attack trigger.

    • David S. McCrae

But you know if you see this plopped down on your opponent’s side of the table, the first thing you’re going to think is, “I better F’in’ do something about that thing right the F Now!”

Especially if your opponent has stuff to manipulate the top cards of libraries.

  • Kaiser

i want to put haste and D-strike on this thing so hard XD

    • Happy The Cat

why double strike?you get less attacks that way, and that equals less fun.

      • Kaiser

        cuadra strike (?)

  • Rocket Raccoon

Regisaur Alpha will gave him haste, and with Otepec Huntmaster and Kinjalli’s Caller, this will come fast to the game!

  • Marcelo Ortega Coimbra Martins

My Maelstrom commander welcome it into its arms…
