Fathom Mage - Gatecrash Spoiler

Fathom Mage

  • Color: Blue, Green
  • Type: Creature - Human, Wizard
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Set:

Evolve (Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature has greater power or toughness than this creature, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)

Whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on Fathom Mage, you may draw a card.

  • Nthrof

This card is so OP!! WIth the draw mechanics that are already in standard, Think Twice, Thought Scour, Fathom Mage make an excellent addition! Go Blessings of Nature!

  • Tim

Hunger of the Howlpack and Increasing Savagery are going to make this card ridiculous.

    • Nthrof

      This card’s already ridiculous!

    • Digitalhawk

What about such things as “Blessings of Nature”… and that has a miracle cost as well and a bit more versatility… but increasing savagery will be really GOOD for Simic too. Especially for Experiment One.

  • skldfjsa

    this can die so easy

    • Tim

Frankly, so can anything else. This may be Pillar of Flame and Searing Spear bait, but frankly, so are most other cards now. That doesn’t stop this from being good, especially if your opponent is running W/G, Mono Green, or Mono White where removal is abysmal.

  • Jack_ridall

to much mana for the ability i feel that evolve is an ability that wants you to curve out and at 4 mana this seams kind of tough

    • Guestguy

Yeah, cuz green cant ever ramp …. you know, like ever …..

      • Digitalhawk

Yep… green cannot have that ability and in Simic… no reference to growth or anything like that, Simic totally wont ramp and have card advantage. :l

  • Jack_ridall

if it was more powerful like a 2/2 or 3/3 i could see it but to run cards like blessing of nature hunger of the howlpack and increasing savagery i dont see that being strong in any real meta game

    • Freecake

      its better that it’s only a 1/1

  • Guest123

does anybody of these OPOP guys concider that putting 4 counters at once on it wont (i think) let you draw 4 cards?
    just saying…
if this was on 3 mana i could really see it getting there, but this seems just sooooo slow,
cool design anyway i hope im able to play it

    • Shadow921

yes it does tet you draw 4 in that circumstance

  • pete

I can see this being very good in EDH, drawing cards whenever i play a creature of more than 2 power, nuts. Most likely not good in standard cause

    1. Dies to everything
    2. you are paying 4 mana to play a 1/1 that you probably have to wait one more turn to get something out of her.
3, better things at four mana ( but we could maybe see more 4 mana creatures as well)

    but ya, nice card

btw, that artwork is amazingg :)

    Simic <3

So turn 2 farseek, this turn 3, thragtusk turn 4 – draw a card.

Turn 5 play resto angel, blink thragtusk, put a token into play and draw 3, this card is now a 5/5.

    Seems playable
