Fiery Impulse deals 2 damage to target creature.

Spell mastery — If there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, Fiery Impulse deals 3 damage to that creature instead.

“Well, this got out of hand.”

  • Aarhg

“Look at the top four cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and burn the rest. They weren’t worth playing anyway.”
Now that sounds like a Fiery Impulse.

    • Happy The Cat

but you actually have to burn them, lighter and all
then throw them at your opponent for max damage

  • Melissa Juice

    Mmmmm. Shock variants.

    • Kevan Kramer

It’s not really a shock variant if you can’t go to the face with it.

      • Melissa Juice

        Oops. Didn’t even notice.
Still gonna be really strong at common.

      • Happy The Cat

        it is a variant
a strictly worse one that can do more damage but still a variant

  • Ryx

Well, this is as close to bolt that we will get in standard.

  • wwww

    It’s an okay burn card.

People might complains about the fact that you can’t target players, but doing so would just make this card a Lightning Bolt 5-8 in Modern (or 8-12 in Legacy/Vintage because of Chain Lightning) and I doubt Wizard want that anyway.

    • wwww

And even if this card doesn’t target players, it’s possible that it will be a Lightning Bolt 5-8 in some deck anyway (Delver, UWr, Twin, Midrange deck that play a lot of removals, etc.) because it will be as efficient as Bolt to deal with creature most of the time.

      • I doubt it, Flame Slash deals 4 with no requirements and it doesn’t see play.

        • Jazzyboy1

          Flame Slash is a sorcery.

This still won’t see play but sorcery-vs instant can be very important fyi.

          • I know it can be important. My point is that Flame Slash always deals more damage and it doesn’t need to meet any requirements, and Flame Slash doesn’t even see fringe play, so it’s highly unlikely that this will either.

        • wwww

Indeed, I rarely see decks with more 1-mana burn spell than 4 Lightning Bolt anyway. So, you’re right on that point.

I’m just saying that if you need more than 4 Lightning Bolt to burn creatures, this might be an option.

          • If you want to burn creatures then Flame Slash or Roast serve a better purpose than this, otherwise for Lightning Bolt 5-8 there are cards like Lava Spike, Rift Bolt or Shard Volley that would be played over this (and are played in Burn).

Not being able to target players is what will prevent this from seeing Modern play, and probably Standard as well.

          • Kameenook

I think if this was a true bolt with spell mastery, it would replace shard volley or rift bolt. Not having immediate gratification on the rift bolt can kill you, and I don’t like sacrificing my lands to my own spells, or anyone else’s spells for that matter.

          • Well of course it would replace it if this were a true bolt with spell mastery… The thing is, this isn’t and since it can’t hit players it wont see play in Modern Burn.

      • Kameenook

Twin maaaaayyybe, Delver wants to win by damage, their bolts have to go the face, UWr also wins with damage, need bolts to the face, Twin that wins by combo won’t mind “fake bolt”, however they rely on the beatdown plan, so they need bolts to the face as well.

    • Happy The Cat

but searing blaze does the job so much better
and don’t try to tell me that it is not one mana so its slower cause this can only deal 3 when you’ve cast two spells
and blaze can kill one-two drops and still go to the face

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    Ooooooh yeah.

  • Zombie

Not hitting players pretty much seals the deal on this seeing any Constructed play whatsoever.

There’s just better spells that hit creatures than this.

It’s fine creature removal in Limited but that’s it.

  • Happy The Cat

would be good if it was a 2 dmg searing blaze but being a worse sock that turns into a worse bolt wont see play
only good thing I see is that it works okay with new Chandra in sealed at instant speed but even then it is pretty mediocre and not worth the slot

    • Melissa Juice

You don’t think it will see Standard play? I’m guessing it will. Maybe not, though. Just depends on what burn is available.

      • wisdomseyes

also the key creatures to kill. If there are enough x/3 creatures it could see 1-2 copies simply because of it’s targets… of course I mean x/3 creatures that aren’t garbage

        • But we already have roast for those.

          • wisdomseyes

true but roast is a sorcery that doesnt touch the air, which alongside the need for spell mastery would still put it at 1-2 in a deck if it is useful for that purpose.

We have to wait to see what will be popular.

          • The good fliers can’t be killed by this either.

          • Kameenook

You could try and target a storm crow, but I wouldn’t dare incur a storm crow’s vengeance, that’s why I always concede lest something happen to me in the night.

          • Concede? Storm Crow just says win the game! No need to concede.

        • Melissa Juice

          Good point.

      • Happy The Cat

did you see last block? that had better shocks
        this is a worse shock

        • Melissa Juice

          • Kameenook

Wild Slash, ferocious is usually irrelevant, but pointing it at your face isn’t.

          • Melissa Juice

But this can be a bolt for targeting creatures. So…this isn’t just “shock.”

  • MTGFanatic

Look at the art! I love it!

  • Justin

The lack of two words takes it from good to mediocre (not unplayable). Those words are “or player”

  • Kameenook

I want it, but don’t want it to say “or player”. On one hand, I like that it’d be a new bolt, on the other hand, I despise burn.

  • Adam McKinney Souza

For most purposes it goes from an early-game shock (seriously, who plays burn spells targeting players?) to a mid-game lighting bolt. Would’ve liked it to target players as well, but still good.

    • Robert FakeLastName

to answer your question-> people who are good at magic.
