  • MagicGALAXY

I honestly never thought this day would come. The hype is real.

  • Mr.Mayhem631

Hm, this looks like it could maybe be good card. Promising, though the card disadvantage may not be worth it.

    • Maxime Legault

this is a reprint of what is consider one of the best counter spell ever. so yes it is good

      • Mr.Mayhem631

Eh. It costs 5. I could play two Counterspells for that.
Or it costs a life and a card? Really? Life is precious, and card disadvantage is bad.
Plus it’s only Bronze rarity. If it were good, they’d put it at least at Silver, maybe even Gold or Obsidian.

        • MagicGALAXY

True, but this card is very powerful. It’s true you can play 2 cards instead of this one, but it has so much power it’s ridiculous. What if you want to cast cards that are expensive mana wise but someone counters it? This card gives you way more card advantage for not using mana. Life is precious, but 1 life and exiling a card isn’t that bad for a flat counter. Especially if you play EDH or Vintage. This card is sitting at a little over $100 dollars, so it deserves this reprint and the art looks fantastic.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

Who would pay $100 for an effect they can get on a $0.05 card?

          • wolf

What $0.05 card is a zero drop that says exile a card: counter target spell.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            And pay one life…
Life is precious, you only have 20 of it.
But you can make infinite mana to cast Cancel.

          • wolf

As a RDW player, I can confidently say that unless my life total is below 2, its more expendable than my mana.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            And your cards?
I know this is an advanced concept, but “card advantage”, which is having more cards than your opponent, is important.

          • wolf

“Card Advantage” isn’t about having more cards, its about having cards that the most impact with the smallest mana cost possible. Dig through time is a better card alone than daze or brainstorm because it has the potential to do more while still having a small mana cost. Giving up a card and 1 life without paying mana is better than actually casting FOW because you still can use that mana, especially if you exile a card that is no longer useful. Next time you try and talk down to someone, at least have an idea of what you are taking about.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

Whoa, man, didn’t realize you were so smart.

          • wolf

Nope, I just understand magic mechanics.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            WHOA, WE GOT A BADASS
            Sorry, we’re done here.
            It’s just a prank, bro.
            (I really am sorry)

          • guest

FOW is garbage. HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVER HEARD OF FOIL?

i run 4 foil foil’s and never have to worry about that disgusting life loss. this card is strictly worse than foil

    • Zombie

      Bad troll is bad

      • Mr.Mayhem631

I agree, and I’m ashamed, but two people fell for it. I’ll be doing this on all the high-power cards.

        • MagicGALAXY

Well, I suck. I fell for it hard. Can you get me a doctor by the way? I think I gave myself cancer :/

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            It’s okay, buddy.

        • EJ

You can’t just stop at dissing the good cards. You should also get all excited about the draft chaff and bulk rares.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            Ooh, SHINY.

        • In limited the card disadvantage is definitely an issue; most of the time this will be a 5-mana Counterspell. Otherwise, it reads “pay one life, target spell becomes Mind Rot for blue cards”

It’s a necessary card to maintain balance in Legacy/Vintage, and all blue decks run four. I play Burn in Legacy and don’t mind one bit when my turn-1 Goblin Guide gets Forced.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            Yeah, then don’t draft it.
Assuming this is magical christmas land where you have a throne made of this card, just pick one of the other solid cards the pack will likely have.

          • Well, I picked up a playset of the original the other day, thanks to this announcement tanking the price. I really like the art of the new one, but at Mythic in a set where each pack is $10 it’s going to be bonkers expensive.

      • Melissa Juice

        What? That was top-notch trolling!

    • Jazzyboy1

Yeah, doubt it’ll see play in anything. Maybe in Dimir control. I would say Izzet storm, but meh, Izzet storm hasn’t been good for years, especially not in Legacy and Vintage.

      • EJ

Note that it doesn’t trigger with Devoid cards, so the new Eldrazi decks won’t be able to use it.

There might be some sort of janky combo possible with Hedron Alignment and this card, so it’s not a total waste of cardboard.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

Hm, I’ll try that when it comes out. Off to preorder some…
EDIT- WTF?! Why is this over $100? Screw it, Logic Knot is better.

          • EJ

It’s the same reason that Guru Mountain, Judge Promo full art Island and Judge Promo Natural Order are worth over $100. People really like the artist, Therese Nielsen.

  • traveler

omg actually decent art compared to the judge promo….

    • Jaden Ledkins

I think they are both great! This just eeeks out in the end as being better because I love Terese Nielsen

      • Dan

Nah, the judge art is garbage. It’s a boring, uninspired image. This one is much better but the original is just so iconic and different.

Also the original is the only one that really captures the energy of something titled “Force of Will”

        • Jazzyboy1

Really? I think this one shows somebody projecting their will outwardly into a ‘force of will’ really well.

    • Blahblahblahbla

      100% AGREE

  • Zombie

I’m so glad they got Terese Nielsen to do this new art for what’s likely her most iconic card.

I just wish it had been printed at Rare, because at Mythic it’s going to suffer from the Modern Masters “Tarmogoyf Syndrome”, where the supply increases far less than the interest and subsequent demand for the card increases.

It will drop its price for a short time, but in the end it’s a new Force of Will art. It’s going to be expensive, the price will return to its normal high in time at the least, and it might very well increase like Goyf did.

I just hope the Wizards has learned from their egregious mistakes with Modern Masters. Eternal Masters needs to be printed in a larger quantity to ensure that prices stay as close to MSRP as possible, otherwise this will only accomplish the eventual drastic increase in price of legacy staples, further impeding entry of new players into the format.

I’m excited to finally see this set here, but there are a lot of problems it could pose that could negatively impact Legacy and the secondary market as a whole in a huge way.

    • guest

i am with you 100% on the secondary market problems. modern masters turned the chase cards into virtual stocks that people would buy and sell at the right times for a massive pay-out (sure this is fine and i am all for the free market but the radical price hikes and drops in such a short period of time ended in the disaster we see today in modern and legacy). the ultimate end was a heavy increase in price for all those cards worth getting in the set. FoW ought to be mythic though. mythic rare cards ought to be slightly more comon in this set though due to all the very real secondary market dilemmas.

i wonder if gofy will get ANOTHER reprint? this time as rare? i love the big green bastard but there is no way he deserves to be on the type of mythic level FoW and wasteland are on!

  • Melissa Juice

Nielsen’s gotten *so much* better at as an artist. Wow.

  • EJ

It would be hilarious if they ran the entire cycle at mythic – Bounty of the Hunt, Contagion, Scars of the Veteran, Pyrokinesis, Force of Will.

  • xxxx

finally I can dust of my playset of storm crows and start spreading the horror one peck at a time

    • EJ

I had been using proxy Storm Crows, but then I got a strongly worded letter from Wizards of the Coast.

  • kmk888

Gorgeous art. Man I don’t want to have to buy these if I ever get a paper legacy deck.

  • nightshade88

The art is missing the storm crow used as exile fodder XD

    • Storm Crow

      :'(

  • guest

this is exponentially better than the judge promo. force is the card that i believe single-handedly saved mtg from becoming a game of “who OTKs first”. the card is not only a staple in every format it flourishes in, but has probably been used in more game-changing turns than any magic card therefore after.

i know THIS is nothing but a pipe dream but the beta dual lands truly deserve a reprint in this set. they are on the list to never come back but (at least when it comes to lands) none are more central to a deck than its duals and fetches.

    • opinionated guy

while I agree, combo would run unchecked in legacy and vintage, I do feel modern has done a good job of balancing out combo, agro and control without the use of force of will and still allowing players to play with a more extensive card pool than boring old standard.

      • guest

agreed but modern does not have such explosive OTK decks. vintage and legacy allow for some of the most powerful “free” spells and they need a really good “free” counter spell to deal with them. FoW, misdirection, and to a lesser extent daze (i believe) have saved magic and thus FoW deserves its spot as a mythic. its not just mythic in proportion to the set; its mythic in respects to the genealogy of magic!

    • a

      reserve list buddy

      • guest

yea i know that but you can’t really call this eternal masters without including the lands which make up the heart and soul of eternal.

  • Atarka Effreet

    Why is this a mythic.

    • Mr.Mayhem631

You trolling too or truly don’t know?

      • Atarka Effreet

Ok, yes paying 1 life and exiling a card is (Sometimes) better than paying 3 (Cancel) but not always. It should not be a mythic. MAYBE a rare.

        • mcpilz

Ok he’s def. trolling, Cancel loool xD

          • Atarka Effreet

haha puny Cancel cannot into relevancy

          • Xboxmingau

Dude FoW is one of the few if not the only card that can stop broken combos for winning in the first turns, dont compare it with cancel, you re embarassing yourself

          • Henry FS Evans

Though didn’t he give us all a good laugh :-)

          • Atarka Effreet

The spelling in that sentence makes me want to cry.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

In case you weren’t aware, it’s a sought after card which is now at around $70.
There merit is in being able to cast it when tapped out or when you don’t have enough lands.

        • Derek Niles

Honestly this Force of Will card is the least impressive in the cycle. Its a shame because Blue is my favorite color

          • Atarka Effreet

            I prefer black and green.

        • Happy The Cat

…you’ve never played a format where this is legal have you? comparing this to cancel is like comparing black lotus to pyretic ritual.

          • Atarka Effreet

No, I play Modern not Vintage/Legacy! Also pyretic ritual is not a bad common…

          • Happy The Cat

yet it’s 1/19999th the price. black lotus is way better than rituals and this is way better than cancel.

          • Atarka Effreet

            Yes.

        • Blahblahblahbla

          The trolling is real folks..

      • From the perspective of a limited player, this should definitely not be mythic. Putting it at mythic is nothing but a money grab.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

So? We all know why it’s at mythic. You clearly do. The only reason you would ask that is if you didn’t know of the card’s value and power.

          • Some of us care about how the set will play as a limited format.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

Yes, but the question “why is this mythic” coupled with his responses makes it pretty clear this is not the case here.
Besides, this at mythic isn’t going to hurt the limited format.

    • Storm Crow

Clearly WoTC doesn’t know how to do Mythics. This card doesn’t hold a candle to Storm Crow or Juju Bubble, and those are Common and Uncommon respectively. It’s disappointing that WoTC gives the Mythic slot to underwhelming cards like this.

  • chad

Apparently he has never lost turn 2 or 1, so to say FORCE is not good is crazy! Trolling for sure Lol CANCEL???? No comment…

    • Mr.Mayhem631

Funny, that looks like a comment.
Also, most players haven’t lost that early.

  • Steak Sauce

Force of Will – bad card. Gets countered by Force of Will. 0/10. :P

    • Rainwater

Then can you tell me why it is on pre-order from card shops for $80?

  • MagicGALAXY

If I can’t have the card, I will GLADLY TAKE THE PLAYMAT!
