+1: Until your next turn, prevent all damage target permanent would deal.

0: Until end of turn, Gideon of the Trials becomes a 4/4 Human Soldier creature with indestructible that’s still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn.

0: You get an emblem with “As long as you control a Gideon planeswalker, you can’t lose the game and your opponents can’t win the game.

  • Calvin

    :( welp i quit

    • Jonathan Reynolds

“Sorry, you can’t quit. Quitting would lose you the game and your emblem + Gideon says that you are not allowed to do that.”

      • DarthinvaderIX

Actually concession overrides cards like this.

        • Tye

Did you not read the card? You CANNOT lose. Go buy a sandwich and when you get judge called just point at your Emblem and Gideon in place without saying a word then finish your sandwich.

          • Hedronal

Rule 1 of magic (not the actual number) “You can always concede, cards can’t make you concede, and cards can’t change any part of this statement.” Also, you still have to abide by tournament rules like no slow play.

  • Kitsune Legion

    Rip standard

On another note, does anyone else think this will see play in ad nausium?

    • Serj

nah because the second ability its just “until the end of the turn”

      • God Enel

Why would an ad nauseam deck use the second ability? They would want this just for the “you can’t lose the game” ability, so that they can draw infinite cards.

    • potatogod442

The problem is that you can’t win the game

      • rops

        Opponent can’t win the game…

  • fullbuster

Platinum Angel on an Emblem sounds very nice! D:

  • Calvin

WE NEED A GOOD BURN SPELL NOW TO KILL HIM!

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Jesus, Gids, calm the hell down.

  • Serj

Ok i think that we ll have a godd removal for planswalker or this it ll get banned soon

    • MTG fan

Maybe open heart will be the best counter to him besides a removal spell.

      • Serj

yeah also i didnt readed well the second ability. Its just “until the end of turn” so he can be attacked.

      • Tye

His +1 is target permanent, not creature.

        • MTG fan

Your point? Spells aren’t permanents, just saying. Open heart is the new transgress the mind sorcery.

          • Tye

Sorry, I saw Heart and assumed “Heart of Kiran” since it can deal 4 damage and kill a +1ed Gids.

          • MTG fan

No problem. We all make mistakes

  • Imalwaysangry

Does anyone else think he ends up becoming a slave of Bolas?

    • Serj

      I hope he dies

      • Raimund Keller

        i like both options

  • MTG fan

Well then. White literally will be using this in every standard deck that has white, I swear.

  • Serj

OH GOD PHARAOH BOLAS SAVE US

  • jonathan forgione

I think this gideon is so cool, how thin

  • Liam Maiher
  • potatogod442

Did Gideon bribe wizard to make his brand so good?

  • Basil Shamshurin

    stop killing magic

  • WHAT!

So we really need a bolt reprint or planeswalker edict now. The facewalker problem is real. I guess lightning helix would be ok too. I mean Ajani IS going to be on Amonkhet.

    • dTHEb

No Ajani wont be in this block.

  • KrakenHunter

    Give us :

1 colorless : destroy target planeswalker.

Then this might be fine. until then, please ban it.

  • Kahai

What is broken: Gideon of the Trials.

He either needs to die or stop getting more powerful with each new card… I understand he’s leaving with rotation in the fall but seriously, this is a bit much.

    • Chromasticore

No. They’ll have some sort of removal to deal with it

      • Kahai

        UU counter target planeswalker spell.
BB Target opponent sacrifices a planeswalker.

        Those would be wonderful.

        • Ryan

Just print Hero’s downfall, that kept much more powerful walkers like Elspeth, Sun’s Champion in check.

          • Kahai

With how much protection you can cast onto permanents i’d much rather get an edict effect than a targeted destroy. Sac > destroy every day.

  • DarthinvaderIX

    Mono-Chad deck incoming?

  • Random Guy

This is too cool, im fine with it being op.

  • Black Mana Man

Best part for me, the emblem doesn’t even care what Gideon it is. Second copy after your first (miraculously) dies? Good to go. Other standard Gideon’s? Good to go. Kytheon EDH? Good to go!

  • the mad seer

i think we just found the definition of a broken card. i believe i foresee this being banned very quickly.

    • Tye

It’s not even that bad… you can deal with it playing creatures.dec.

    • Matt Taylor

Tons of removal deals with it, a small creature booping him on the nose deals with it, I don’t see the problem. If your in a position to do lethal damage, redirect 3 of it to Gideon and gg.

      • Edward

BY redirect 3 you mean redirect 3 damage done from a spell right? That is what I assume you mean but the way you worded it makes it sound like you meant redirect 3 combat damage to him which you can’t do.

        • Matt Taylor

Both really, the RAW definition of redirecting spell damage, or the definition of redirect applied to one of your creatures being aimed at Gideon, either way you have a dead Gideon.

          • Edward

You are still making it sound like you can redirect combat damage to planeswalkers which you can’t do unless you mean something else by “redirect applied to one of your creatures being aimed at Gideon.” You either attack Gideon or find another way to kill him. Those are the 2 options

          • Matt Taylor

If you read what I said I think its pretty clear, i specifically said your way, the way redirect is used in mtg rules, or redirec the way the word is used every where else, aiming the creature at gideon instead of a player, not somehow splitting its damage.
If I was writing the text on the cards that phrasing could be a problem, but when im just talking redirect is a perfectly acceptable word to describe the act of having a creature attack a PW when it otherwise would be attacking a player.

      • king_ Tesseract

Haha funny you killed one Gideon. Your opponent has 12. And all he has to do is get one emblem. And say you do kill him in one turn. The next turn your opponent plays better g
Gideon who now has a platinum angel ability. W/o playing black how do you kill 12 Gideons. One even stops your creatures from dealing damage.

  • Nall

This isn’t even better than BFZ Gideon…

    • Writerofthings

but man do they work good together…

    • Matt Taylor

I agree, people are vastly over estimating this cards power.

    • king_ Tesseract

By himself no. But in a format with 2 others and an emblem that goes off the turn he comes in. Something is getting mega banned.

      • aw0001

seems pretty clear, ally of zendikar is going to be banned.

  • Dreadwarden

So question about how this card works, when your life points hit 0 what happens then? Do you start going into negative life points since you can’t lose?

    • Tye

Correct. If you lose the condition to “I can’t lose” you’ll lose as a state based action. You’ll need to gain life out of the negative before losing your Gideon in order to stay in the game.

    • Nebulium

Yep, with that emblem and a gideon under your control, you could go to negative 1 million, have 50 poison counters, be dealt 21 damage by an opposing commander and still be in the game. Anytime rules clash with one another “can’t” always wins.

  • Matt Taylor

To the slaughter, ruinous path, walking ballista, if he isn’t a creature fiery temper, If they turn him into a creature grasp of darkness, etc etc etc or just getting any creature past your opponents defences for a boop. I don’t see why everyone is so scared of this card and is screaming for more/better planeswalker hate.

    • Kaiser

Yo cant evaluate the power of one card just for the numbers of answers that it have.

      • Matt Taylor

What do you mean lol? That’s exactly how you evaluate a cards power, by how hard it is for your opponent to deal with.
When’s the last time you saw thing in the ice see play? Morphs into a 7/8 that board bounces, but seeing as all black removal hits and harnessed lightning+1energy hits it, it’s too squishy for standard.

        • Kaiser

Thing in the ice dont win the game the same turn that hits the board, the same is true when you transform Thing in the Ice. This guy can be played in late game like a 3 mana dealt with me or you cant win. So this is really powerfull in that way. You just need to protec Gideon for stay alive. Isnt Broken but can be very annoying to dealt with.

          • Matt Taylor

Specifically how is Gideon saving you from losing the game? What source of damage was about to kill you that can’t simply be partially redirected to kill Gideon? He’s a three life maybe one turn buffer that can disable one attacker if he survives his first turn. I’m not saying that’s awful by any means, just a far cry from being hard to deal with.

          • Kaiser

i was talking about playing him in late turns not playing him on turn 3. With mana open to make him survives. He is a big shield in just one card. And the emblen dont leaves the field event if you kill one gideon, play another Gideon of the Trials or a better one and that solve the problem. You need to dealt with all the gideons to kill your opponent.

        • Shagoth

You can deal with nearly every permanent, this one is actually tougher to remove because it has a mind game where you need to have something that deals with planeswalkers or indestructible creatures. The creature removal doesn’t always work on it.

    • StandardKart

except the fact that the majority of the removal you named is in black, you named one red and one colorless, this significantly limits the types of decks that can deal with him. Sure, the whole, just get at him with creatures is fine, but I see this being put into some sort of control build and its just too easy for that deck to then say “nope, you don’t get any creatures”

      • Matt Taylor

Well they need to horribly Awry or essence scatter turn 2, then Tap out turn 3 to play him hoping you don’t have an answer so he’s vulnerable right away even under ideal conditions. If you want more answers sky sovereign kills him, negate stops him from being born, incendiary flow, stasis snare if they creature him the list goes on and on.
As far as oppressive cards go the cat combo is far more limiting, this card requires that your opponent is either playing mono green, or that you never tap out and can counter absolutely everything they try to do. He isn’t awful but he’s far from op or broken.

  • Kaiser

Gideon stap plz XD you are too strong for this game

  • Writerofthings

So now I am just hoping we get a Lily that can compete with LOTV.

  • Fred Weasley

What a time to be alive people! I can see this getting banned int his month’s banning even before it gets released. Even though that could be what happens, it won’t. I guess I’ll have to get my copies after the emergency ban after the first pro tour. I mean in a white-blue deck you have counters out your ears to protect your Gideon, so you are probably going to win 80%-90% of the time. That of course means you have to find Gideon, but wait there’s more! We do still have a planeswalker tutor in standard that might see the light of play now so…

    • Nall

That’s some grade A logic you’ve got there Fred.

  • Chromasticore

He seems like a cool-ish version, but not overly-powerful like some people are saying

    • karathb

3 mana 4/4 indestructible and can protect himself with the prevent, and perfect after Kiran. If this is not op, nothing is.

      • Chromasticore

Does he have Haste or Hexproof?

        • karathb

No. It also does not have menace, trample, flying, double-strike, fear, lifelink and also does not have infect. And guess what, Jace, the Mind Sculptor is also bad because it cannot even turn into a creature…

          • Chromasticore

And Jace, the Mind Sculptor has 4 abilities and generates card advantage. Gideon stops one permanent from dealing damage

          • Ryan

This is just more of the “Muh planeswalkers best cards and are unbeatable” narrative that increases with every set…

          • Kaiser

            That last one was sarcasm

        • Matt Taylor

Precisely, tons of ways to kill or exile him and his +1 doesn’t hit vehicles, not impressed with him at all.

          • MTG fan

His plus hits any permanent. Read the card carefully please

          • Matt Taylor

The vehicle thing was an afterthought, my original point of pretty much every black removal and several white removal killing him stands, walking ballista or any creature beyond the one he +1s, I’m really not worried about playing against this card.

          • karathb

famous last words: ‘I’m really not worried about playing against this card’

          • Chromasticore

And? Just use a different permanent. Are you limited to one permanent? Can you not use instants or sorceries now?

  • Cthulhooo

Is there any way to abuse getting same emblems over and over?

    • puxing

That would not do anything sinds there is no way of removing emblems and you only need 1

  • Morgan Ivan James Campbell

this new Gideon is evil with his emblem, turn the table on your opponent as log as you control a Gideon Planeswalker

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    Vulnerable to Cast Out.

    • karathb

Seriously? Is it vulnerable to an unconditional removal spell? Please… (also every noncreature spell is vulnerable to negate)

      • Dr. Burn Crow

Sorry I didn’t make a grocery list of all the ways to stop him. Just trying to illustrate that he’s not all that. Sorry I’ve somehow triggered you.

        • Chromasticore

The good Doctor knows what’s up

          • Dr. Burn Crow

When in doubt, Vindicate that SOB when he’s not looking.

          • Chromasticore

He’ll never see what’s coming! Cast out wouldn’t be a bad solution either

          • king_ Tesseract

Oh too bad. But opponents now have an emblem and just played Ally of Zendikar. Dies to removal is not a good argument.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

            You underestimate my powers.

          • Kaiser

The Crow God strikes again. But seriusly that emblem is just very problematic XD makes any gideon better like a pasive ab for all them.

  • Ryan Cameron

Are they ever going to add something that might possibly interact with Planeswalker emblems?

    • Writerofthings

Karn does. That’s about it so far

      • Derek Niles

how does Karn interact with Emblems ?

        • MTG fan

          He restarts the game.

          • Derek Niles

oh, I suppose that counts lol

    • Hedronal

Probably not, that’s the point of them. Get one once, it’s there forever.

  • Will Todichiinii

OMG, you got to burn to shine :(
    Mythic lightning bolt!

  • Ryū

Oh, I misread the third ability. It’s any Gideon planeswalker. Well that’s just neat.

  • Johan K

This is rather underwhelming in comparison to BFZ Gideon. It’s not terrible, but I doubt the emblem will ever be relevant when you are behind. It’s a bit win-more. The support you would need to prevent it from dying is large, despite its +1. I can definitely see it included in Esper control decks or whatnot and performing well. But would I rather have this than BFZ Gideon? This was designed when 18 month standard was still a thing, so you couldn’t have both. Now it’s stronger of course. But after rotation?

    • Together Alone

Think we will see a BFZ Gideon ban then?

      • Joshua Feight

I highly doubt that as there will only be some months until it rotates out anyway…

        • Matt Taylor

yeah like 8 months? I don’t think he’ll be banned but he isn’t safe just because he’s on the way out.

      • Scathain

No, the wizards seem to love Gideon, and are not afraid of printing other good versions of him, like this one. Don’t get me wrong, I would be quite happy to never see a Gideon again in my life, but I very much doubt any Gideon will be done away with.

    • Matt Taylor

I have to agree, any I open will be immediately sold while the hype is still high, I see this thing hitting dovin baan prices a month or 2 after release.

      • karathb

I buy all of your copies anytime for dovin baan price!

    • Frederik Altmann

This planeswalker isnt great when you are behind on board, I give you that. But against non interactive decks and nasty permanents like valakut, its a mainboardable anti-win condition that has to be dealt with first. I certainly think its playable – even in modern.

      • karathb

valakut is a pretty bad example. All they do is deal 3 damage.

        • Frederik Altmann

depends on how you see it I guess… A primeval titan would have to go grab some more valakuts first in order to deal damage with landdrops etcetc… there are multiple occasions where the first ability is valuable, and so are the rest.

          • karathb

They always have more valakut. And if it is active, and they put the valakut triggers onto the stack in a good order, than all of them will deal damage. Remember that this is a prevent effect, so in this case the valakut trigger will happen, no matter what.

        • Johan K

I think they mean that they use the +1 on the Valakut that is on-board.

      • Aurore

        “Good against Valakut”
Play mountain, deal 3. Redirect to Gideon.

  • Nebulium

Oh. This is just another way to draw your whole deck with ad nauseum. If you’re feeling risky, you can pass the turn even, not that you’d want to.

  • Derek Niles

Not as good as Battle for Zendikar Gideon sure, but I love that Emblem, cool abilities is what I want to see on my planeswalkers!

  • alexander macrae

Did this get spoiled instead of a god? So no green god today? Disappointing.

  • Delipha

Gideon can keep going nuts but all the Gods are garbage? Good job Wizards, good job! The trials are a one use,so they will probably be only played in limited. The Cartouches or w/e are actually not shit, but still inimpressive. Sad part is that the possible emblematic cards af this set are so shit, that after they rotate out of Standart, this entire block will be forgotten…

    • karathb

What exactly is your problem with the gods? We have seen only 2 so far, and the blue is pretty strong. This gideon might even see modern play and the sets looks so far awesome for limited! What else do you want?

      • KrakenHunter

Good cards that aren’t named gideon or white. so Mardu vehicule can rest in peace and people who love brewing deck can see hope in competitive.

        • karathb

Mardu can be beaten. It is strong because copycat is there. I am sure that they will ban copycat with the release of Amonkhet. Once that happens, everybody will be prepared to destroy mardu. There are sooo many cards that literally destroy mardu, but are dead against copycat.

      • Kahai

A better distribution of power across the colors would be nice.

  • Zombie

For those of you sick to death of Gideon, now there’s going to be even more of them in standard. Have fun!

    • KrakenHunter

Guess I’ll come back to standard in 2 years when he rotates out…
But then there will be 3-6 more gideon…

      • Shagoth

        Gideon, Avenger of Standard
+2: Players cannot cast removal spells
0: If a player has a mountain or island in play, they lose the game
-2: Creatures become way too aggressively costed

    • Julna Buras

I’d like to hear your thoughts on how he compares to Ally of Zendikar, since I’d like to be prepared for Gideon when I go to FNM. I thought he was just weird and a bit scary considering he’s a 3-drop, but I don’t think I’m as good at evaluating cards.

      • Zombie

This Gid seems broken at face value, but actually looking at him in the context of a game and not a vaccum after proxying him in a match today after work, he’s a bit weaker than Ally, though that’s just in context with the current standard, though.

Ally is still the better of the pair in most situations, though I think this Gideon might actually see fringe/niche Modern play in Abzan or Esper Death’s Shadow or something similar, decks that like killing themselves.

His +1 puts him out of bolt range and stops a threat from trading back the next turn, meaning you start the race a bit further ahead for a relatively low mana investment. He can then attack in for 4, which if paired with a Goyf or DS is a serious hit.

Idk if it will work out for sure, but I’m already hearing brewing with him come down the competititve REL pipeline.

Honestly following this guy up with an Ally seems busted.

  • Scathain

Wow, this is wicked good. A 3 drop Gideon that still has the become an above-curve creature ability, with two other very relevant abilities. Would be quite at home in a superfriends deck, giving it some earlier-game offense while helping out with vehicles.

  • Transgendent

To all the people comparing this to BFZ Gideon: This isn’t worse. It’s different. Sure, they have one similar ability, but all Gideons have it. This Gideon serves a different purpose than the BFZ one.

    • galen150

It serves to get the emblem to make the other ones better

  • Kameenook

*immediately builds jank modern deck with all gideons + wraths*

    • MrAptronym

Kideon lead Gideon based EDH deck. Just Gideons, wraths and removal.

  • kmk888

Ally of Zendikar is better because of the immediate token generation, but a lot of the time this is still a 4/4 indestructible beatstick for 3 mana. Sooo much fun to have this nonsense in Standard.

    • galen150

Or, play this one and get the emblem, then let them kill him and play ally of zendikar

      • kmk888

I would never play this card just for the emblem and one attack. The emblem is not worth a card. If you’re using the emblem you’d be going low and pinning all your hopes on a planewalker surviving, which is too risky, or staying at a higher life total in which case you haven’t gained an advantage by making the emblem. I also would not play this with Ally of Zendikar in the same deck. This is his replacement after bfz FINALLY rotates.

Practically speaking, this card is one fog and then a 4/4 for the rest of the game.

    • Kaiser

I can put 1 of this and 3-4 Ally of Zendikar. This one is very good just for the emblem.

  • Brian Schmidt

Great now all they need is an aura that targets planeswalkers that gives them hexproof and indestructible, AMIRITE?!?

    • Simon Hawks

Giving a planeswalker indestructible does not prevent loyalty counters from being removed.

      • Liam Camplin

But if it has indestructible, there would be no need for using loyalty effects. You would win anyways. At least that’s what I think. Anyone correct me if I’m wrong if the last loyalty counter being removed from a planeswalker kills it if it still has indestructible.

        • Nicholas Brown

You have to sacrifice a planes Walker when it loses all loyalty.

          • AlaAlba

No, you don’t sacrifice it. It goes to the graveyard as a state-based action.

          • Liam Camplin

            Fair enough. Thanks.

  • Happy The Cat

as long as you control a copy of this so far only mono white planeswalker, you got a free platinum angel…
still really dont like all gideons, now there is a reason to throw all of them into a janky mono white deck…

    • bonogringo

I think i will play him and ally of zendikar and white titan to get him back on table when i need to not die… and maybe some undurial rites to get back the titan just in case. and some liliana and fun stuff…

  • galen150

Get emblem, let him die. Spam exert creatures and play Gideon martial paragon to untap the exerted creatures with his +2

  • Murilo Mazza

This one can’t “block”, soon or later it will need to attack and then you can beat to kill him. About the emblem… usually you kill a planeswalker before starting killing your opponent (specially if it is Ally of Zendikar), so this is not strong IMO. You want a Gideon, Ally of Zendikar instead, almost all the times

    • Demiurgo

3 mana for a 4/4 that’s also indestructible? I mean, really? And you can have both this and Ally (and Marial Paragon if you dare) for maximum emblem value. And his protection +1 is way better than Ally’s. For real, this card is amazing.

      • Murilo Mazza

Planeswalker rule, dude. You can’t control two Gideon at the same time.

        • Polis_Ohio

You can have both emblems though. If you think it’s so underpowered I’ll buy any you pull for $3 each.

          • Murilo Mazza

“underpowered” is different than “not strong”. It is still a commercial mythic though, you can buy it more expensive because it is cool.

        • Demiurgo

You can have both IN THE DECK, man. This way you will never run out of Gideons.

          • Murilo Mazza

Demiurgo: imagine how much expensive and unfuctional your deck will be

          • Shagoth

If it was just the combo, than yeah. But they can be two undercoated and very difficult to remove creatures with ridiculous utility, which makes them both cards that can takeover a game on their own without any combo.

      • MrAptronym

An indestructible 4/4 on your turn that your opponents can attack/burn on their turn

  • I can’t tell if this is underpowered or begging to be broken.

    • KrakenHunter

      it’s pretty broken.
Worst case scenario, you cast him, get emblem let him die then cast ally.

      • Nall

That’s a pretty bad worst case scenario, it’s almost as if you’re down a card and gained nothing.

        • KrakenHunter

well, you can’t lose as long as you have a gideon planeswalker and you have a 2/2 token + whatever you played on turn 1-2.

Sorry but that,s pretty good for a worst case.

          • Nall

I’m not sure if you ever played with Gideon before, but if you’re about to lose, he definitely isn’t turning the game around. There aren’t gonna be many board states where they could kill you and not be able to touch Gideon. That emblem is a trap and will perform at best like a glorified fog. Not saying this Gideon is bad, but the emblem is definitely the least exciting part.

          • KrakenHunter

I’m not much into arguing and I see we have different point of view. So yea.

You think he’s not that good, I think he’s broken af. That’s all there is to it.

            Good day sir :)

          • Nall

Sorry if I seemed like I was arguing, not my intention.

          • KrakenHunter

Don’t worry I meant no offense either.

  • Nanya

Hey, Platinum Angel, when did you become an Emblem?

    • Shagoth

This is a horribly unfun card, like “you can’t lose cards” maybe technically balanced, but they are never pleasant to play against. And this thing is way too tough to remove given the Emblem, protection, the fact that Gideon is in standard, and being an aggressive creature.

      • Nanya

I only really play EDH, so I don’t know what the removal in Standard is like.

        • Shagoth

Sorcery speed removal, Fatal Push (which doesn’t usually hit revolt), only thing that can consistently kill this is Grasp of Darkness. Pithing needle, we need it now.

          • Nall

Creatures can consistently kill it, and there are more spells than grasp of darkness that deal with it, a lot more.

  • Shagoth

    No.

  • TooBiased

I think its probably weaker then people expect, but it might be a good sideboard card against some decks.

It might be great against infect, and even might be good against Death Shadow Decks. Both decks are not threat dense enough to get rid of it easily once the emblem is down, and you start +1ing.

  • Kumrag

    It’s emblem isn’t THAT great.

    • Happy The Cat

a three mana plat angel that can’t be targeted as a creature except for on your turn if you choose to let it. not to mention if it does die you can play any of the 4 other Gideons and have them become plat angels.

      • Kumrag

Idk what’s in standard atm but can standard not deal with a three loyalty Planeswalker? And the emblem is only good if Gideon is in play so idk. I get it, you have to deal with him on your turn, but so what, just kill him at sorcery speed

      • MrAptronym

It can be attacked at though. You have to be in a stable position for it to be of use. If you can get a gideon out and your opponent can’t deal with it, you were probably winning.

It does FORCE your opponents to deal with your planeswalkers first in the event that you are near defeat, but I am not sure how often that swings games. I think the Emblem has its uses, but isn’t overall too impressive.

    • John Cummings

It actually is. It isn’t because it just wins you the game, but because it creates a fairly steep obstacle that your opponent MUST deal with in order to win the game. As other people have mentioned, you could easily run white with 6-8 Gideons (this and BFZ) and you’re going to have a real bad time. This can be thrown into mono-white aggro, G/W Humans, R/W Humans, Three-color control that’s dominating, and so on. It’s cheap and makes life misery

      • Kumrag

Yeah I don’t know what decks are in standard, but there is apparently 12 possible copies of gideon that can be ran once amonkhet drops? Then there are the planeswalker tutors, though not sure you’d want those. I can see how just dropping a gideon every 2-3 turns can keep you from losing altogether. There’s only so much removal.

  • Winter Trabex

They might as well ban this in standard right now.

  • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

Its good, because it prevents your opponents from destroying it and creatures you control..

  • Tavis Carrillo

If you have Gideon of any type that your opponent just can’t get rid of, You were most likely going to win anyways

  • Benjo Sian

hello gideon my old friend i see your still broken as ever :3

  • Brian Schmidt

Do we know if this is the actual Amonkhet Gideon or the Planeswalker Deck Gideon? I would assume the Planeswalker deck will be more mana and more underwhelming(?) abilities. But most of the new Planeswalker decks seemed to have specific abilities geared toward said Planeswalker.

    • Mason Pastorius

This is the actual one, the planeswalker deck Gideon was already spoiled and I think it’s on the last page. His name is Gideon, Martial Paragon or something.

  • koliki loki

    Time for Gideon Tribal!!!!

  • Kezvin

Ruinous Path just became so much more relevant

  • Tomaso Fiumara

I feel like many of you are missing the point.
Turn 3: I play Gid and do emblem. I Pass. Now you have to remove Gid (not easy on turn 3 with me using white), but if you use a sorcery or something like that it’s almost a time walk for me (your entire turn for one of my cards).
Now, you removed Gid, great, as we stand every other Gid in my deck now will be a Plat Angel, so with a 4x of Gid I’ll still have 3 cards in my deck stating “play this card and you can’t lose the game”. But I can play up to 12 Gid in my deck (using only the good ones), so I’ll have 11 cards stating that I can’t lose the game, and they are all “not so easy” to deal with.
Worst case for you: I play Gid, I do emblem, you are not able to remove it or deal only 1-2 damage. Great, now every turn will be +1 and one of your permanents deals no damage, GG.

As we stand now, I’m not able to see any reason not to play 4x of this Gid in every white deck, because it will always be beneficial…

    • Nall

I think you are greatly underestimating how easy it is to kill a planeswalker. Also, what board state will you be in where they could bring you to zero life but have no way to deal with gideon? The protection offered by that emblem at best will be like a fog, which might win a game or two, but it’s definitely not as backbreaking as people are making it sound.

    • Adam Malekhedayat

      Nah.

    • Coulter Baker

The thing is, unlike plat angel, planeswalkers can be killed by combat damage, or any kind of damage, really. So, barring conrner cases like infect, insta-win cards, etc. what the embem actually reads is: your life total is increased by the loyalty of each Gideon planeswalker you control. and using your turn three to gain 3 life is not very good, as is gaining 3-4 life every time you play a planeswalker, of which you can only have one out at a time.

  • MrAptronym

Players upon seeing Hazoret: “This card is conditionally dead in your hand, so it is terrible and why would anyone even play this?”
Players upon seeing Gideon: “I will run a dozen Gideon cards in my deck even though I can only have one out at a time.”

    • ymmij X

If the red god said “you cant lose while your hand is empty” people would be racing to play it. Heck if it had any flashy ability i’d play it. Just give it trample or evasion or and i know itis would never happen prowess

  • Kevin Johnstone

So, we wait for Standard Bans?
Yes, he is easy to kill… but are the other 3 youll be playing so easy? Possibly 5-8 (you can play 4 drop gideon as a 1-4 of as well no problem)
He will excel in UW / Esper / Merica control shells. Hands down.

    • ymmij X

Not to mention we have a third gideon in standard. Probably wont see play with its massive cost but still you will never run out of gids

  • Rimo Gracia

it emblem only say gideon PW??. huftt 4 gideon AOZ,4 gideon Trial,4 gideon martial paragon, 4 gid’mother, 4 gid’father and all gid’famz… im done!

  • Vizzerdrix

I couldn’t care less about standard but this makes me want to build kytheon edh

    • Nharzhool

Right?! That was the first thing I thought when I saw this.

  • Insight66
  • Captain Frosty

This is going to result in so many draws it isn’t even funny.

    • Ben

I’m assuming you’re implying that both players would have one out and that people wouldn’t play black/white for just that reason?

      • Captain Frosty

Either two people playing coherent 8 Gid decks against each other or one person running an 8+ Gid deck barely scraping by, unable to win or lose.
