• TheAweDude

    The anti-bullshit card.

    “Oh, you’re crewing a vehicle, take 2.”
“Is that a Planeswalker? Take 2.”
“Nice Hangarback Walker. You want to use it, you gotta pay the tax.”

    • Zombie

Doesn’t work on Planeswalker abilities fam

      • TheAweDude

        Dang, still amazingly good.

      • Cody Alex Humble

in fact, saheeli is unaffected by this card completely.

        • Zombie

This is more of a giant middle finger to Vehicles and Tower than Saheeli.

          • Julna Buras

Thank heavens for that. I’m so extremely tired of Mardu Vehicles.

          • Zombie

I mean, it’s not going to make Mardu suddenly not the best deck in the format.

If anything, this is going to make Mardu Vehicles even more oppressive, because Mardu Vehicles will still run this card to deal with other Mardu and Ballista decks.

          • Cthulhooo

Oh man, those mirror matches are going to be extra salty.

          • Zombie

I’m quite certain there will be many plays made purely out of spite.

          • Robbie Davis

doesn’t saheeli rai’s ability make it an artifact though. So they shouldn’t be able to combo off.

          • aswanlikeneck

I believe the cat’s ability is ‘triggered’ rather than ‘activated’. And Saheeli makes the cat an artifact, but the cat doesn’t make Saheeli an artifact.

    • Jordan

      Fetches cost 3….

  • Zombie

Stops Scavenging Ooze dead in its tracks, makes people’s fetches deal 3 to them…

It’s not even symmetrical. This doesn’t hit you like Eidolon of the Great Revel.

    Holy ****

Brb gonna see if I can work this into the 75 of Modern Burn.

Ehhhh.. Maybe it might fit better in a Collected Company deck. Or Kiki-Chord. IDK.

Disclaimer as a side note: This isn’t really that good, it’s just super hype. Might see Sideboard play in Modern at best. The new single Red drop that gives your spells Wither is infinitely more playable than this, and there’s no way in f***ing hell this ever replaces Eidolon of the Great Revel.

But in Standard, this can do hilarious things.

Until your opponent just Shocks it and kills you with abilities. But hey at least you looked cool for a second.

As another aside, this is probably going to just push Mardu Vehicles even further beyond the rest of the meta. Mardu Vehicle/Ballista decks will just run this to win the mirror, and it will make Mardu that much better against a good chunk of the meta.

I expect another Standard ban soon.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

This turn 2. Blood moon turn 3. Free win red is gonna be an even bigger threat x_x

      • Joshua Lane

Blood Moon takes all the fun out of making them take 3 to fetch though.

  • Erik López Barcelar

Quite interesting. I suppose he works against mana dorks?

    • Zombie

Mana dorks are mana abilities. It explicitly states on the card that mana abilities are unaffected.

      • Erik López Barcelar

Tapping for mana is considered mana ability? Thought it only meant abilities like the activated ones from Amonkhet gods for example.

        • Zombie

“Mana abilities” are abilities that produce mana.

          • Keith Corduroy

not abilities that use mana? are u sure?

          • Hedronal

            I’m completely sure, yes.

          • Jordan

            100% positive.

        • MithosFall

See rule 605.1 and its sub-rules.

        • Hedronal

          From the Mtg comprehensive rules:
“605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it meets all of the following criteria: it doesn’t have a target, it could put mana into a player’s mana pool when it resolves, and it’s not a loyalty ability. (See rule 606, “Loyalty Abilities.”)”

          • Erik López Barcelar

Oh, I see, thx for the info! So basically this card isnt that good. Its still quite anoying tho but will have to see some gameplays.

  • Murilo Mazza

So Walking Ballista now is shi*…..

    • Zombie

“HAH, I play Harsh Mentor, your Ballista can suck it, you DERN NET DECKER!!!!”

“Shock. Ballista you for lethal. GG”

      “F**K”

      • Murilo Mazza

This logic is obviously for future Ballista draws. The game is not 100% as you want, I could simply Dispel your Shock in this case

        • Zombie

If you’re maindecking Dispel you have some serious mental health issues that you need to work out, and I’m pretty sure you’re just playing Magical Christmasland Magic by yourself in a padded room.

Don’t maindeck Dispel. Bad. Bad Murilo. Stop.

Stop it. Stop making bad choices.

          • Kahai

Stop dictating how people play a game.

          • Zombie

Maindecking Dispel is just bad Magic, though.

No one reasonable anywhere would do it.

            Ever.

I’m not joking. Anyone who competes in even the weakest CREL competitions would backhand slap you if you suggested running Dispel main.

And Blue players at an FNM would look at you funny like you wandered off and lost your handler.

          • Murilo Mazza

            hahahaha Merry xmas

          • Joshua Lane

            You must only play standard.

          • Zombie

I haven’t played Standard since Siege Rhino was cancerously unleashed upon my life, and if I ever play Standard again I want you to personally shoot me in the face.

Standard is what you play when you want to pretend you know how to play Magic. Streamlined, linear, boring, minimal interaction, fatties, mindless combos that require zero set up, etc.

I’m not joking. I’ll let you use my own revolver I carry on my hip every day. I will let you end me with my best friend if I ever play Standard again.

I’m never wasting money on that pointless format ever again.

          • Michael Pepin

What we are saying, is you are rude to other people.
Some people play standard and enjoy it.
Some people play EDH and enjoy it.
            I personally prefer Limited
People are allowed to play what they want. That’s the point of magic.

          • Zombie

What you’re saying is pointless nonsense.

If I just joined in on the friendship circlejerk here, nothing would get done. No discussion would happen.

People would just spout mindless BS about every card and you’d all just pat them on the back and give them a gold star.

“I play Tibalt unironically because to me he’s better than JTMS”

And your attitude gets you nothing but, “Yeah, right on Tibalt guy, you do you!”

And then they get fed up with the gimmick because they can’t win any games and turn to a hardcore spike like me to give them the run-down of the game.

People don’t get better at Magic if you never tell them they’re wrong.

          • Perseus Johnson

Are you really comparing this conversation to someone saying that Tibalt is the most powerful PW of all times?https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5ff09c8e032a0315b714142ca0828d45223cc9f75f299ecd6452493c44e32ea4.jpg

          • foxboy1000

This whole thread is sh*t. If @disqus_ZombieMTG:disqus wants to criticize someone for playing something bad, let him/her. If the guy wants to run something bad, let him/her. Zombie is free to say whatever they want about whomever they want, and anybody is free to say anything they want to about Zombie. As soon as you guys realize that the conversation isn’t going anywhere, I’d suggest stop having it.

          • Perseus Johnson

I agree. I wasn’t going to chime in as it was clear that this thread wasn’t going anywhere but the Tibalt comment was one of the biggest strawmen I’ve ever seen especially since the card is arguably good.

          • Kahai

It doesn’t matter what other people think, it doesn’t matter what other players do. What matters is that someone is allowed to play whatever card they want.

          • Zombie

I believe we’ve already had this discussion.

People CAN play whatever they want.

That doesn’t mean it’s right. Or that I’m not allowed to criticize them for being wrong.

          • Kahai

You are allowed to criticize them, but that doesn’t make you right.

You are not the czar of magic cards, nor anything else for that matter. Bye.

          • Zombie

            And you aren’t the feelings-police.

Also, your position is filled with hypocritical holes the size of Amy Schumer.

So you’re saying I’m not allowed to criticize people or how they play their cards, yet you’re the one also telling me what I’m not allowed to do?

Get off your f***ing high horse.

Also: “Stop dictating how people play a game.”

Stop dictating what I can and can’t say.

          • Kahai

You’re just showing who you really are. And that’s fine. Good bye.

I also said you could criticize, but if you think you’re right, that’s a joke.

          • Zombie

Who I am should have been blatantly obvious from day 1. I’m cynical and I’ve been playing Magic for about 18 years of my life, give or take a few months.

Don’t act like this is some unmasking or revelation.

I’ve been dumping on people’s hopes and dreams for years on this site, as well as forcing people to think critically about new cards.

It’s not my job to coddle people or hold your hand.

I am what I am. It’s your fault for putting me on some pedestal just because I’m a former Gold pro who’s been playing for most of his life. Don’t put that on me.

I’m here to use my knowledge to play a gimmick. Cynicism is my shtick.

Don’t get all holier-than-thou on me. It’s BS and you know it.

            Grow up.

          • Kameenook

Splinter twin often would run mainboard one dispel, but you may be referring to just standard. Who knows

          • Zombie

            “Maindecking Dispel is bad Magic”

            “Splinter Twin is bad Magic”

Maindecking Dispel to answer ways to stop my Splinter Twin and literally only answers to my Splinter Twin is part of that bad Magic.

And Maindecking one Dispel was literally only because of Insant-speed answers to the combo in a format dominated by Splinter Twin decks running Instant-speed answers to their broken combo.

            Aka, bad magic.

I don’t see how my statement was inaccurate. More Twin decks didn’t play a Dispel mainboard.

The vast majority of Twin variants ran Dispel as a 1/2x in the side. Like good players do.

          • Kameenook

Ok i’m just going to forget you responded to this comment.

          • Zombie

            Good luck with that

          • Michael Pepin

Yeah, that’s not okay. Don’t say someone has mental issues for playing a card.

          • Zombie

We all have varying degrees of mental issues.

Like, me, for instance. I have weaponized autism when it comes to brewing EDH decks.

My Breya deck, for instance, is so overtuned I’m not allowed to play it in the league at my LGS.

          • Michael Pepin

            What are you? Thirteen? Stop.

          • Zombie

            Only in my heart.

            I have a 13 year old’s heart.

Not willing to say if it’s black market or not.

Also not willing to disclose if it’s actually in my body or sitting in a jar on my nightstand.

It’s in a jar on my nightstand.

          • Michael Pepin

            Now that’s comedy :D

          • Zombie

Comedy is people getting triggered about mental health jokes.

          • Michael Pepin

Nah, that’s just bad taste on the comedian.
Like seriously, you have to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to sink that low. Be better. Use better jokes.

          • Zombie

If I wanted to be a better comedian I wouldn’t be making bad jokes on a f***ing MTG card spoiler website.

            Unbunch your Huggies and deal.

          • Michael Pepin

            Nah

          • Zombie

            Thoughtful answer

          • Oscar

Would you mind sharing your Breya list? I’m very interested in seeing it. I recently started making my EDH decks more competitive but I still don’t know how to fine tune them.

          • Zombie

I’ll make a tapped out for it, I’ve been meaning to make a basic primer fir Breya soon too.

Between you and me, Breya is the best commander from the precons, not Atraxa.

          • Oscar

Cool, thanks! I look forward to it!

And yeah, no doubt you’re right, there. I play Atraxa and while she has a fun theme deck, she lacks Breyas potential to enable all sorts of busted combos.

          • Zombie

It’s not even the combo parts, honestly. Breya herself is just so blatantly overtuned it’s not even funny.

Enemy commander gets played? Kill it with Breya.

Opponent low? Kill them with Breya.

Opponent about to kill you with non-commander damage? Breya gains you life, you live and turn around the game.

She’s a singular entity toolbox that can single-handedly control a game, before even factoring in the nonsense you can build with her in a Red + Esper Artifact deck.

Imho she’s one of the Top 3 best Commanders in the game right now for both Multiplayer and 1v1.

            She’s busted.

          • Oscar

I excessively studied your list and incorporated a lot of elements into my own brews, thanks again. I only have one tiny question (I asked this also on tappedout but just in case you didn’t read it): what is your reasoning against using pili-pala + grand architect?

          • Zombie

It’s a weaker and more fragile combo, that’s also harder to pull off, than any of my other infinite combos. It also has a higher setup investment, meaning the combo goes off slower.

I also can’t tutor for Grand Architect without my perfect tutors like Demonic Tutor, while all of my tutors hit my other combo pieces, whatever they may be.

Basically, the slots for PP/GA are taken up by Enlightened Tutor and Purphoros, who’s tutored out when I’m setting up my infinite recursion kills or Thopter Foundry kill, with Enlightened Tutor being just another way to find him beyond my perfect tutors.

          • Oscar

I proxied your entire list and will play with it during my next game night. I hope to get deeper insight in your deck building choices. I might even buy the deck if I end up liking it enough. But I probably won’t be able to afford the most expensive cards, namely Mishra’s Factory, ABU duals and Grim Tutor. What alternatives would you suggest? What cards almost made the cut in your deck?

          • Zombie

There were a few infinite combos that were just barely edged out by my current choices simply being more resilient, more efficient, or just plain faster.

The combo that didn’t quite make it in would be Pili-Pala/Grand Architect.

Neither piece is great alone, so it’s a combo that’s worthless once slightly disrupted. Grand Architect really isn’t that strong outside of buffing Breya and her thopters, especially in a deck that lacks significant blue-colored Grow-Wide power.

The great part of the combos I’m running isn’t so much their resilience as the fact that the pieces they involve all can operate by themselves to an acceptable degree.

            For examples:

            – Purphoros is one of my primary killers, but without a combo going off around him he’s still a massive threat that’s hard to answer.

            – Sharuum and Phyrexian Metamorph together form an infinite recursion loop, but either card alone is amazing by itself in any game I’d play.

            – Time Sieve goes infinite with Thopter Assembly, but is still a decent Time Walk effect when I can throw away some artifacts when I need to buy time.

            – Thopter Foundry is just naturally strong solo, and I have many ways to abuse or get value out of Sword of the Meek outside of the combo as well, chiefly with Breya herself.

            – Ashnod’s Altar/KKIW are just broken mana engines by themselves, and don’t always need to be the engine for looping infinite mana combos.

Purphoros can be replaced by Marionette Master or Disciple of the Vault as the lethal pointy end of any infinite recursion/ETB combo.

However, the entire point of playing Purphoros is that, being an enchantment, he’s hit by every single tutor in my deck including Enlightened Tutor, where Marionette Master or Disciple can not be found by anything except the perfect tutors like Demonic Tutor and Grim Tutor.

You can easily build a budget-replacement variant of a deck like this, it just won’t be nearly as fast or efficient.

Replacing the ABUR Duals with either Battle(Tango) Lands or Scry Lands is perfectly acceptable.

Really the only lands I can’t recommend taking out at all are the fetches and shocks, they are the necessary core of any 3-4-5 color deck and you will suffer severely for not running them.

There really isn’t a true replacement to Mishra’s Factory.

The best “budget by comparison” replacement for it I’ve found is spending an additional land slot to bring both Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Cabal Coffers, and then tutoring for whichever you don’t draw/both of them.

You could also just run Temple of the False God instead if you’re in a more casual multiplayer meta.

          • Oscar

Wow, thanks for the elaborate reply! I will definitively incorporate the battle lands in the deck, they look like the perfect budget replacements in a deck with enough fetches. Temple of the false God also doesn’t look bad either. You might read from me again after I played your list a lot myself.

          • Zombie

It’s a fairly straightforward/intuitive deck to play, at least for a combo deck.

          • Zombie

            http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/infinite-superiority-breya-etherium-shaper/

Finally got around to uploading it.

There’s 6 infinite game-winning combos and the deck can still win through value engines or damage fairly easily.

And it has my favorite dirty trick, Consulate Crackdown + Mycosynth Lattice. (That exiles all of your opponent’s permanents, btw.)

It’s pretty fun to play, actually. You can win out of nowhere in multiple ways.

There’s only a few cards that have high CMC and they’re just things I can’t quite live without in Multiplayer.

In 1v1/Duel Commander I would have cut most of the really high CMC cards in favor of more removal.

And I say was because Breya is now banned as a Commander in 1v1/Duel.

People besides me are finally waking up to how broken Breya is.

          • Oscar

Thank you very much for sharing! I’m pretty sure I can learn a thing or two about properly building EDH decks.

          • Jordan

+2/+2 hexproof in response then. that see’s maindeck play.

Fatal push your ballista in response. Laugh maniacally.

          • Zombie

            “Reveals second Blossoming Defense”

            *Jordan flips table*

          • Jordan

Hey, if they got it, they got it. They were meant to win and you were likely going to lose no matter what you do.

          • Zombie

I don’t believe in “they were meant to win”.

That’s why I play Burn. Only I’m meant to win. And I’m going to do it while pounding you mercilessly in the face until you rethink your poor life choices.

      • Cthulhooo

Why do we even play answers and hosers if they die to removal? We should obviously play 20 counterspells and 20 removal decks. Oh that’s right, because if they don’t then we get an advantage. Most creatures die to removal but their value lies in what they are able to accomplish if your opponent doesn’t draw into removal or used it on something else.

        • Zombie

          You got meme’d

  • Julna Buras

Thank heavens it doesn’t say planeswalkers. My Esper superfriends was about to go throw itself off a cliff.

  • Jordan

Go ahead and draw punk. Said this guy to Ballista.

    • Zombie

I mean, any deck running Ballista can just kill this with no repercussions and then still take over the game with Ballista.

This is more of a passive answer to Vehicles.

      • Jordan

Only if you have a spell in hand to kill it. Otherwise, that ballista is going to deal 4 to it’s owner.

        • Zombie

Or the Ballista could just not shoot stuff and swing in.

What are you gonna do, block it with your Harsh Mentor?

          • Jordan

1:1? 2 mana vs 4? Sure. If not? I’ll kill it with almost any burn spells unless it’s like T6 or later and you dump your whole turn into it.

          • Zombie

So you’re just playing in a meta where bad players consistently drop T2 Ballistas for literally no intelligent reason? Enough to regularly exploit them with this?

It seems like every day now I lose a little bit more faith in anyone who actually plays Standard.

          • Thomas Luffman

It’s not that the standard players are getting worse. It’s that all the good players have left standard already.

          • Jordan

Who’s dropping t2 ballista? Also, who said anything about a t2 or a 1/1? You said swing it. I said 4 mana. You’re playing a 2/2 and trying to get me to block. I said I would because it’s 2 mana investment vs 4. And you can’t even remove his counters in response without taking 4 damage. What, you’re gonna wait till t6 IF you have 6 mana available? Sure. Good luck with that.

      • Michael Pepin

Zombie, can you just let people like a card?

  • Murilo Mazza

It makes Declaration to Stone better. Crack that thing and take 2

  • Gustavo Martinez

It should hose mana abilities too :c

    • Jade

Then it would say “Whenever an opponent taps a land, shock them”, and would be one of the most ridiculous hatebears ever printed.

      • Gustavo Martinez

well well it doesnt have to hose the mana abilities from lands, but it would be awesome from everything else

  • Kaiser

fetch lands cost 3? woow that is a very good opener. Easy to dealt with but i am sure that atleast you will dealt 4 damages before he dies

    • Zombie

They still only cost 1, cuz this thing is literally premium Bolt bait.

I doubt this will ever see much Modern play just because of Eidolon’s interactions with the casting of spells being so much better than abilities.

      • Arran Haigh

Why not play both, and what if they have to fetch for the bolt then it still did 2 damage and soaked a bolt

  • Jordan

    Juuuust bought a few sets.

  • MrAptronym

Ohhh my Red EDH punishment is going to love this. Combo stopper right here.

EDH, the format where everyone has every answer and a way to tutor it, and you think this will actually survive longer than the six seconds it takes for someone to tap their mana for something that answers it.

Idk what meta you play in where non-symmetrical fun-police abilities fly, but everywhere I’ve played this would just turn the game into Archenemy.

      • Kahai

Yeah, because some players actually play EDH for something other than being a spike…

        • Zombie

My EDH playgroup is harshly competitive, we have our own mini league.

Our primary decks are fully foiled where possible, black bordered everything, etc. Each of our decks are a few thousand $.

This would still earn you nothing but instant death from the other 3 of us ganging up on the player who was stupid enough to play this.

(Just in case you’re curious, I play primarily Breya, and the other three big players I regularly play with are currently Nekusar, Sen Triplets, and Leovold – to give you an idea of how pushed our group is.)

A guy with a “decked out” Atraxa deck was talking up his game at the LGS one fine saturday a few weeks ago. We invited him to play.

He conceded in roughly 15 minutes after we had taken 2 turns each.

          • NC

            Sounds ‘fun’

          • Zombie

It’s what we find fun. We’re competitive players. I used to be Gold.

            That’s just how we do.

I mean, we obviously play other stuff for other people, but us 4 are relentless with each other.

My alternate deck is just a fun Trostani deck.

It may or may not still have infinite combos.

          • Aurore

My playgroup learned a while ago that if you play hyper competitive decks then everyone else at the table will either gang up on them or just play THEIR hyper competitive decks, and no one ends up having any fun. Much better to just play decks that actually interact with other people.

          • Zombie

Yeah, we interact plenty, and we’re all hyper competitive.

If everyone’s competitive and no one’s casual, there’s nothing to complain about.

          • Kahai

That’s fine and dandy for you, but never presume you know what other people can play, or what’s best for them. If someone wants to mainboard dispel or play this, let them. If they want to play against your heavy decks, inform them ahead of time, and let them decide, but please don’t be someone who looks down on others for playing cards they like.

          • Cthulhooo

Jesus you turned EDH into some kind of sado masochistic olympics, didn’t you?

          • Zombie

Kinda. We get off on complicated stack operation resolutions

        • Michael Pepin

Some people do play EDH for fun. And besides, sometimes people hold their answers

          • Michael Pepin

And also, sometimes its more fun to play with low powered, low cost decks. You shouldn’t bash a card because it doesn’t fit your specific playstyle.

      • MrAptronym

Well the nice thing about EDH is that players can play the way they want. My group for the most part avoids excessive tutoring, as most of us think it is against the mission of a singleton format. I’ve actually had a lot of success playing cards like this, because I can usually find someone else happy to have it around. When one person on the table is playing a combo deck, and you’re the only answer on the field, people can be surprisingly generous.

In any case “this can be answered” is fine. It’s two mana, and if most of my deck is demanding an answer then fine. I am happy to have a game with people interacting instead of everyone turtling until they can take everyone out.

      • Shagoth

No one liked the hate bears in my group, until combos became to prevalent. Then Kambal EDH was treated like the Phelddagriff deck, and everyone hated my glorious hippo when they realized that it just made everyone’s combos more resilient.

        • Zombie

          Your group sounds weird

        • Kahai

          Your group sounds fun.

          • Shagoth

It’s stupid, but kind of so bad it’s good. We stopped with the comboing, though.
I stopped Kemballing, though. It was basically a practice hypothetical atrocious proxy game.

      • Tolle

A meta with enough recursion to say “oh. You wanted this dead? How cute.”

        • Zombie

Enlightened Tutor, Draw off top, Rest in Peace at Instant speed off of Vedalken Orrery.

Nice reanimator deck. Welcome to the cancer known as Breya.

          • Tolle

Way to go 4 cards taking out my one. Excellent card economy. And none of that is subject to removal/countering. None.

          • Zombie

More like 1 card. 3 of them are still in play making all my stuff better or shutting you down.

          • Tolle

You still need to get the other three. And yes tutors help but then you are using up 4.

  • Kahai

    SOOO GOOD

    • Zombie

      It’s more “EHHHHHHHHH OK”.

It just exacerbates the Mardu problem and makes it that much better than everyone else.

      • Kahai

It hoses plenty of things in standard.

  • Deadly Berry

“So, I heard you like infinite combos?”

  • Annonymous

Everything from the cost to the flavor text on this card is amazing

  • Jordan

Modern: Nice arcbound you got there. See also: Inky, Blinky, Plating, and half of Affinity.

Legacy: Elves “Hold my beer, I’m going nuclear”

  • Murilo Mazza

inspired in Game of thrones’ Grey Worm? I like his cloth

    • Deadly Berry

      This is nothing like Torkonudo.

  • Thomas Lupinek

    Anti Cat combo, cool

    • NC

      Nope

    • Blahblahblahbla

      It doesn’t say planeswalkers, unfortunately.

  • Liam Maiher

1 or 2 of in mono red modern burn?

    • Arran Haigh

Absolutely, honesty with the work eidolon does and the presence of fetches and decks like lantern or affinity this could see playset levels of play pushing stuff like searing blaze to the sideboard
Also the weakness of burn is that it doesnt block well. Another creature helps you survive longer in chump mode

  • Blahblahblahbla

Feels like it should be tested in a modern hatebears shell.

    • Shagoth

      I could see that.

  • Shagoth

Hey, I haven’t see a true hate BEAR in a while. Also, it’s red, interesting.

Dies to removal doesn’t work if it’s on something that is two mana or less which needs to be removed as soon as possible and isn’t backed by a bunch of other great cards.
This would probably be a sideboard card or backed by other hate bears anyways. If this gets removed, cool, then there’s less removal for my other creatures, we both sped up the game by netting ourselves one less card each. That’s a sign of good deck building. Dying to removal shouldn’t work here.
Funny, because I think he’s overhyped for other reasons. There are better hosers for Mardu vehicles so they won’t care too much about the damage. Also it doesn’t say planeswalkers so it doesn’t harm Saheeli, now that would make it as good as manglehorn. I’d think about modern but Linvala is usually better. This is an rarely Eidolon of the Great Revel but there aren’t enough activated abilities running around. Crewing in standard, equipping and Kiki-Jiki in modern is it.
That’s how you say a card sucks. This dies to removal almost as easily as the golgari snake has been tier one prior to the bannnings.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

“Dies to removal” every permanant in mtg dies to some form of removal. Garbage argument is garbage.

      • Shagoth

        Exactly.

      • Happy The Cat

he literally said dies to removal is an invalid argument, especially since this is a low cost minion.
dies to removal is the arguement that thanks to a creature not having evasion, it’s weaker than a smaller creature with evasion.

      • Kyle Kinnear

Dies to removal does matter in burn. You want your creatures doing, on average, 4 damage for them to be worth it. The fact that this guy does 0 when removed is a huge downside, and will greatly reduce the average damage he does in a game. Eidolon, 99% of the time, gets in for at least 2 and often more. My Eidolons die before they attack ~50% of the time.

  • Joshua Lane

I think it’s a neat effect, though ultimately a little less powerful than I’d like. Might test it for the sideboard in modern because there are multiple lantern players in my area.

    • Phil Pham

Less powerful? Damn dude, this makes fetches deal 3 to them. This card is NUTS.

      • Joshua Lane

If we’re only considering fetches it’s like Leonin Arbiter but it doesn’t actually stop your opponent from fetching early. Punisher mechanics like this are always kind of underwhelming to me.

    • Jordan

This card literally poos all over Affinity

      • Joshua Lane

They’ll still take 4 to equip a plating and kill you with an inkmoth nexus.

But seriously it’s more of a niche card than people think. Rather be playing Grudge or Shatterstorm in red. Or Stony Silence if you actually want to poo on affinity.

        • Affinity also has ways to counteract this unlike Stony Silence. On the other hand, unlike Stony Silence this is also main deck playable (at least as much as Eidolon of the Great Revel, arguably more).

          • Kyle Kinnear

As a lifetime, multi-format burn player, I think it’s not quite main deck playable, and certainly much, much worse than Eidolon. The fact that it dies to removal without doing damage is an immense downside. 2 mana is a lot for a burn spell, and it has to do a lot to see play. The reason Eidolon is so good is that it always, except in very rare cases, gets in for at least two, and often more. While this will have spots of being good, it will also have spots of being awful. Consistency is very important in burn.

I think Smash to Smithereens, Stony Silence and Destructive Revelry are going to be better options, at least as the metagame looks now. There may be a metagame in the future where this guy is excellent though, so I’ll keep him in mind and pick them up after the hype for this card dies down.

          • Kevin Johnstone

You’ll be bringing this in against any deck with Lily, bob, scooze, Tron etc… Really helps close the gap a bit on our (burns) bad match ups

    • It punishes fetches and artifact-based decks (drop him on turn two playing burn, and they pretty much have to use removal on him within a couple turns or lose), and the effect isn’t even symmetrical. It’s pretty good.

  • Happy The Cat

oh hey Flame Hyenard. good to see you.

    • Shagoth

      BURN BURN!

  • Insight66
  • Jude

…this kills copycat if it livess

    • Shagoth

      No, doesn’t say planeswalkers.

    • sansmyhands

Nope. The Felidar Guardian trigger isn’t activated, and this doesn’t hit off of Planeswalkers, unfortunately.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    Dang, that’s some hatebear.

  • Random Guy

Impressive Disciple of the Vault variant.

  • George Carter

No one notices that this might single handedly make standard vehicles decks a no go? Isnt this what everyone was hoping for?

    • Polis_Ohio

How so? Mardu Vehicles typically only runs hearts and the only other commonly ran card with an activated ability is ballista.

  • Winter Trabex

I’m glad I’m not playing a deck where I would have to worry about this.

    • The Dracogenius

I play Affinity…… Suicide Arcbound Ravager, here i come!

  • Brandon Bilodeau

    thats nasty in edh.

  • Aaron Hooker

    RIP lantern control.

    • Alex Lopez Melero

      Burn player says yes!

  • What’s this? Another red rare that’ll actually be playable beyond Standard?

  • The Big Al

Cracking a fetch is not a mana ability, yep thats modern and legacy playable.

  • Cthulhooo

You’re tired? Maybe you’d like a vehicle to carry you over that hot desert, huh? Too bad, there’s no vehicles on Amonkhet maggot! You’re gonna run through that desert on foot and you’re gonna like it!

    • Jordan

And then you’re gonna THANK me for it.

    • sansmyhands

Well now I want an alter of this to make it look like Sgt. Slaughter from GI Joe.

  • Arran Haigh

Modern Burn just got a lot better

  • potatogod442

    Why hello there eternal format

Sad that the hate bear goes to red instead of white

    • Together Alone

well it is thematically more red both in flavor and in design. Its a punishing them rather than actually forbidding them to do something like most white hate bears.

  • Benjo Sian

so if i tap a land to pay for permanents does it count as a activated ability?

    • Him

*if it isn’t a mana ability.

    • Polis_Ohio

The land is a mana ability, so no that would not trigger. If it pays for an activated ability on one of the listed permanents then yes it would trigger when that ability is activated.

  • Jordan

I got lucky with the pre-orders. Got 12 at $3.75 apiece.

  • Kevin Johnstone

Burn gets its first card in almost THREE years. wow! <3

    • Jacob Kodicovic

What about the 1 Mana 1/2 prowess? Soulfire Mage, I think. It’s -1/-1 counter ability is good for burn.

      • Polis_Ohio

Very good with burn, it can take out indestructible critters.

        • Blue Lightning

Burn doesn’t care so much about opponent’s creatures, burn players will play monestary swiftspear over soul scar mage. Haste seems much better than -1-1, just because you don’t want to use burn spells on creatures…except for searing blaze obviously.

          • Polis_Ohio

Oh you’re right about modern burn. I was responding to Jacob thinking about standard and limited, using burn as a replacement for any direct damage spell. Didn’t realize the OP was talking about modern.

      • Alex Lopez Melero

And kill kitchen finks, but, no haste and no have place in deck

  • Ryan Sullivan

Again, how many cards are they gonna make me put into my Nekusar deck?

  • The Dracogenius

This triggers on Fetchlands right? Good lord…..

    • Alex Lopez Melero

      Yes!

  • Matthew Douglas

What would this commonly hit in modern besides fetches? Equip on Cranial plating is all I can think of. The problematic ones that come to mind are triggered abilities. Except for Lantern Control, this &*^*&^(s them.

    • Uncertain Title

Energy Abilities, anything that removes counters to trigger (Walking Ballista), tap abilities, revolt, so on.

      • MTG fan

Why Revolt? That is a triggered ability.

    • xxxx

Vial, ghost quater, tec edge, tasigur activations, fulminator mage, knight of reliquary, all equip abilities, cursecatcher, lavamancer, animating lands (mutavault, celestial col, .. .) and muuuch more

  • Tavis Carrillo

lol burn does not need help

  • Commander? Maze of Ith, Fetches, CREATURE ABILITIES

  • Tom Cyrillus Arditi

This is going into my Kurkesh EDH deck :3

  • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

    Ummmm counter fetches…

What if we got fetches someday who also produces Mana during Fetch?

  • xxxx

For eternal formats best card of the set so far. This could get quite the price tag if modern and legacy both want to play it.

    • Benjamin Johnson

They definitely will, imho. It’s so good vs Miracles in Burn.

  • Benjamin Johnson

This definitely tilts the generally pretty even Burn vs. Miracles matchup in Burns favor. I’m sad, but see it as a good thing as a Miracles player that WOTC is attempting to print cards that are good against Top, like they did with Abrupt Decay and Counterbalance, instead of just banning it outright.

  • Zombie

I mean, it kinda is my resonsibility to help other players get better.

Plus, why wouldn’t I want other players to get better and not play garbage? What’s the point of not wanting potential opponents to be good?

Why would I want to play against someone playing bad cards that don’t test me? Easy wins from opponents playing draft chaffe.dec aren’t valuable to me.

  • Zombie

    How aboooout. No
