  • xSiNx SHADOW

“legendary Planeswalker” did I miss something?

    • Johan K

Incoming rules change probably, since “planeswalker – jace” under the current legendary rule makes it redundant

      • locololo

they will have the same rules as for legendary creatures. It was explained on todays article when they spoiled jace. so we can have all jaces (or planeswalkers) on Magic in the battlefield at the same time

        • Johan K

Yea, saw that within the hour of my post, but hadn’t located source of spoiler by the time I commented (within minutes of it going up here). Thanks though. :)

    • CMK

Planeswalker subtype no longer affects what ‘walkers you can have in play. All ‘walkers are now retroactively Legendary, so you can only have one copy of a given named ‘walker in play at the same time. So, you could have every Jace ever printed in play at the same time as long as they all have different names.

      • Derek Palanca

Gideon of the Trials + Gideons.

      • Vizzerdrix

It’s so ******* stupid, I hope there’s a little more restriction, otherwise it’s stupid lore and flavorwise similarly having 2 versions of a legendary are as well but I’m slightly ok with it

        • Ultramegalord

Lore is already broken when you have two legendary creatures with the same sur name at the same time, i.e. Thalia, heretic cathar and thalia, guardian of thraben. Same difference

          • Tony Delfino

Or on that note…. 4 Avacyns out at once.

        • TogetherAlone

Honestly its better to have legendaries and Planeswalker’s work identically as its less burden of knowledge for new and experienced players.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

All the Ob Nixili. All the time.

  • Vanguard

    Wow, jace got messed up.

  • Shagoth

He looks pretty funny in the picture, and I think this will be the toughest planeswalker since Edlritch Moon (Not counting Saheeli since she was tough as a combo piece and not a planeswalker) His ability can loot a bit, but his minus gets a pretty big token given that he’s three mana. Also, it can go controlled infinite with Doubling Season.

  • Derek Niles

    Showing some shoulder there Jace!

  • Mini Zem

Sooooo… Doubling season gives you infinite jaces and infinite 2/2 illusions, right?

    • galen150

      oh god, please no.

    • Alexandre Donnart

That’s exactly what I saw first.

    • Jay Kilian

In standard you can make a lot of Jace tokens with Annointed Procession. His ultimate would be just silly. There’s definitely a deck there.

    • imoth

      Sadly, yes.

    • Zombie

Doubling Season breaks Planeswalkers, more breaking news at 11

    • Random Guy

Felidar Saheeli, except it’s with an enchantment and an ult. Not too bad, definitely not bannable tho.

  • Sebastian Fuchs

can´t there be one damn block without an jayce -.- gosh this guy is annoying as hell

    • Kaiser

      But look that fashion

    • Hyorin

Last block that had a Jace rotates out when this one comes in. In the meantime we’ll have 4 Nissas in Standard.

      • TogetherAlone

But only two playable ones lol. I wouldnt really count the planeswalker deck ones like ever.

    • galen150

he didnt have a card the last 2 blocks……. why complain about him when gideon has like 3 versions, nissa has 4, liliana has 3, and chandra has 3

    • Tony Delfino

      of the last blocks:
Tarkir block has no Jace, Battle for Zendikar block has no Jace, Kaladesh block has no Jace, Amonkhet block has no Jace….

It just feels like we’ve seen him and all the Gatewatch planeswalkers more because they’re on the art of so many cards.

  • Steve Baker

HEY JACE LONG TIME NO SEA

    • Random Guy

That’s kinda the definition of castaway

  • Kaiser

Savage is the new Blue, damn jace this isn’t a fashion contest

  • Dr. Burn Crow

I like how Jace finally is casting like an illusionist.

  • galen150

took him long enough to actually have illusionist abilities on his cards.

  • jokol

Do the tokens come into play with 3 counters?

    • Happy The Cat

yes, pws enter the battlefield with their predetermined counters. If not, blinking pws would kill them, not reset them.

  • Happy The Cat

so… Jace became Dread Pirate Roberts after Westley. huh.
ever been beaten so bad you turn into a pirate?

  • Jack Taylor

This + Doubling Season with Ezuri, Claw of Progress out

    • Happy The Cat

you dont even need Ezuri, this with Doubling Season is broken. You can ult the turn you play this so you make four copies(thanks to DS), which enter the battlefield able to ult and make four more copies, which can repeat this process infinitely until you have so many jaces entering the battlefield you can just make them instead pump out a million 2/2 illusions. then even if they wipe the board you have millions of jaces with 1 or 4 hats left.

  • Rocket Raccoon

Also, for those combo pieces, Purphoros god, die miserably! xD

  • Dr. Burn Crow

I keep coming back and looking at those abilities and smiling.
I like Jace. I’m not even sorry.

    • Kaiser

yeah i know that clothes…that face…that bod—i mean infinite illusions! planeswalker clones! what a powerfull card! (?)

      • Zombie

I can’t really evaluate his power level effectively yet, but there’s already some pretty dumb stuff you can do in Eternal formats with him.

On a scale of gimmicky to broken, they’re about a Silly(3), and all of them seem fun.

The only current interaction with him that seems a bit ludicrous is he immediately goes infinite with Doubling Season.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

Jace is admittedly more fit than I imagined.

    • Zombie

I like Jaces that do it right, when they’re unique and fit a very powerful niche.

Jace Beleren did it first, JTMS got it right, and up until now, the only other Jace that fit the bill was Jace, Architect of Thought.

This fills a very specific void that Jace’s character had in his translations to physical cards: His Illusion magic.

This is how you do a Jace card.

I hate the Jace that’s paraded around on everything, and I hate Gatewatch Whiny-Baby Jace.

      This Jace, I don’t hate.

  • galen150

so are they maybe gonna have non-legendary planeswalkers? like, maybe there is a plane that is predominantly planeswalkers and they have just a bunch of ‘normal people’ planeswalkers?

    • Golden Piggy

no they just updated the ruling every planeswalker is legendary now

  • Golden Piggy

Can u use Planeswalkers as commanders now? cause there legendary

    • Happy The Cat

outside of specific ones from commander precons no, they still aren’t legendary creatures.

    • galen150

dont think so, commanders have to be creatures. you cant have a legendary artifact like paradox engine be your commander.

edit: unless they change that rule too

    • Tony Delfino

Legendary Creatures are allowable as planeswalkers. Otherwise there are legendary enchantments, legendary lands, legendary equipment….

    • Dave

No, as stated in todays article on the wizards site.
“Also note that this does not mean legendary planeswalkers can be your Commander unless an ability says so.”

  • Jude

At 3 i like it .u. u only get one loot trigger but still this is a different jace, much more aggressive and oriented more toqard an early boardstate. and that ult is going to get used a lot. If you are always able to get some looting done, youre going to. Outside of it tho, hi there doubling season chain veil combo.

  • Somebodyy

    doubling season

  • Alex Kronfeld

it’s a shame the rule change doesn’t happen until after rotation. Gideon Tribal would be so much funnier.

    • Zombie

You seem to be mistaken, this actually makes Gideons Tribal playable.

Once this change takes place, you can have literally all of your Gideons in play at once.

      All of them.

      • galen150

i think part of what he’s talking about is that the zendikar gideon, one of the better ones, would be gone

        • Zombie

Gideons Tribal is a Modern deck, where you have access to actually all of the Gideons.

It’s a joke in Standard, you only have 2 Gideons to play with (Martial Paragon doesn’t count, he’s a 5 mana sack of trash).

In Modern, you can have 5 playable Gideons in play at once.

  • Zombie

This change to Planeswalkers is going to set a massive precedent for Eternal formats, namely Vintage and Modern, who are most flexible in Walker usage.

Planeswalkers now being affected by the Legendary rules and not their former, now-defunct Planeswalker Uniqueness Clause, means that multiple Planeswalkers of the same subtype can still be in play together as long as they do not share a card name.

As an example, this is a huge deal for Black/X decks in Modern that want to run both Liliana of the Veil AND Liliana, the Last Hope in the same deck.

Where, previously, these two fantastic Liliana cards would compete for deck slots, because one would kill the first once the second is played, they can now be played alongside eachother.

Imagine a midrange Modern deck having both Liliana of the Veil AND Liliana, the Last Hope in play at the same time.

    Yeah. That’s gross.

This is a very, VERY big deal that more people need to talk about, as it could cause huge balance issues in Planeswalker-dense/flexible formats.

This is also a massive boost to the playability of Superfriends (even Gideons Tribal).

This is likely to be one of the more impactful changes to Magic over the past decade.

    • Dave

It’s also a pretty big flavor fail. I don’t get why they did this. uniqueness-rule wasn’t unintuitive.

      • Zombie

Honestly? Probably to sell more packs by shoving more of the same Walkers into set after set.

3 Jaces in Standard? NO PROBLEM, PLAY ‘EM ALL!!!

      • Random Guy

Mechanically it was a massive limitation that added nothing to the game.

      • Harry Palm

Yeah, they should’ve done it the other way around and said that you couldn’t have legendary creatures that were the same character even if they had different names but that doesn’t make them more money, which is all they care about. Planeswalkers sell packs. Kids want to play all of their Jaces and Lilianas, not just one. Integrity and common sense take a back seat when there’s money to be made.

    • Random Guy

Planeswalkers aren’t very common in eternal formats, so it’s nothing that can’t be solved with a few bans.

      • Zombie

Planeswalkers are extremely common in Eternal formats, they just aren’t played in huge quantities because it’s not necessary and you can’t have more than one of a subtype of Walker in play at once.

Lifting that restriction could enable flexible decks to run both top tier lilis, both eternal playable chandras, could re-enable Garruk, Apex Predator cheeky lists, etc.

Not to mention being able to two different Jaces side by side. Decks that really want both JTMS and Vryn’s Prodigy can now get away with it, they don’t have to worry about dealing with one killing the other.

The scope of this change is really hard to grasp because we can’t see what people will do with it yet, but it’s not even close to speculatory to assume this change will break something in Eternal formats, if anything.

Running multiples of underpowered Standard walkers isn’t that big of a deal.

But, running 2-4 different Jaces in a Control deck in Modern? Occupying not even 4-5 slots you can now utilize same-character/different versions of Planeswalkers as silver-bullets/one-off’s to create new flexible strategies.

Be more open-minded. The best is yet to come.

    • Geddon

Gideon of the Trials just got a whole lot better. Get the emblem, then play three Gideons at the same time.

    • QR005

Does that mean you can put two planeswalker whith the same name on the battlefield an they do not die because they are not “legendary”? I mean, does it mean i can play 2 lilianas of the viel at the same time? it does not feels great.
      should we expect erratas?

      • Gildan Bladeborn

All previously printed planeswalkers are going to be Oracled to be legendary once this set drops, so no, you can’t have two Liliana of the Veil on the battlefield simultaneously for the same reason you can’t have two of any legendary permanent. Removing the planeswalker uniqueness rule just means you can have multiple planeswalkers with the same subtype on the battlefield at the same time, bringing them in line with how different versions of the same legendary “character” works now (ie, as long as they have two different names, the game rules don’t care).

Honestly, it makes sense to make this change because people who have played this game for years and new players alike were confused by the planeswalker uniqueness rule. Planeswalkers being “functionally legendary” except across subtypes that correspond to the character they represent “shouldn’t” be a hard concept to grasp, and in a vacuum it probably wouldn’t be, but when you have that rule alongside the legend rule, people who should know better thought you could use Mirror Gallery to have multiple planeswalkers with the same subtype in play at once (which didn’t work before, but will with the coming rules change) due to them conflating the uniqueness rule and the legend rule. New players on the other hand almost invariably apply their understanding of the planeswalker uniqueness rule to scenarios where there are multiple different versions of the same legendary creature and assume that you can “surely only have one of those in play at any given time, since they’re the same person/thing” (when in reality it is and always has been the opposite of that).

      • Zombie

No, the legendary rule applies in name only.

What happened before was Planeswalker cards of the same character (Say, Liliana of the Veil & Liliana, the Last Hope) shared the Planeswalker subtype “Liliana”.

Because of the Planeswalker Uniqueness Clause, one of those Lilianas would have to go to your graveyard if you had both in play at the same time, because you could not have more than one “Planeswalker- Liliana” in play at any given time.

Now, Planeswalkers are being given the ‘Legendary’ Supertype, and their Subtype is no longer being affected by the Uniqueness Rule, meaning it’s just a regular subtype now.

        What this means is:

        – You can now have Liliana Vess, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Liliana of the Veil, and Liliana, the Last Hope all in play under your control at the same time.

        – You can NOT have 2 Liliana of the Veil in play at the same time. Yes, their subtypes are no longer checked by the P.U.R, but since those cards are Legendary, and share the same name, one of them has to be sacrificed immediately.

You simply treat every Planeswalker like a Legendary now.

Just like how you can have Thalia, Heretic Cathar and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in play at the same time, you can have Jace Beleren and Jace, the Mind Sculptor in play at the same time as well – because while they have the same subtype, they have different card names.

    • Hedronal

I’m mostly neutral or undecided on it thus far, after a minute or so of just going “What.. what.. what..” at my computer when first seeing the new rule. The only part of the change that I’m in favor of is even more Mirror Gallery schenanigans.

  • DasIsFuck

ugh, ugly art:S…No I mean the Jace part is ugly…
they just make him look worst and worst, the Mind Sculptor and original arts was the best looking Jaces also hate how they push him away from black or I should say dark blue, because that’s where a Mind Mage is in my opinion.

  • Kitnz

This could help make WU tokens more viable, working with Anointed Procession, Aven Mind Guide, and all those lovely embalm and eternalize creatures.

  • galen150

anyone else feel like this might be taking place a bit later on story wise? looks like Jace has changed quite a bit since hour of devastation, like at least been on Ixilan for a few months, or maybe even a year or 2? like maybe they never went and and regrouped and just went their separate ways after they had their asses handed to them by bolas (or that Jace did at least). seems to me like he’s gotten a bit more muscled (possibly because of the pirate life?) and he seems a bit more…. brave? proud? cant quite think of the right word

    • John Scott

“Synapses crumbled. Pain blossomed. Insanity beckoned. A towering wave of darkness rose in the distance. Jace knew the crash of that wave meant dissolution. Mind-death. Without conscious thought, he began planeswalking away blindly, not knowing or caring where. He had to avoid that darkness.

He felt himself being pulled across the Blind Eternities as the wave of darkness struck, and then he knew nothing at all.”

well he did have his mind partially destroyed so the change in personality is warranted and they had to recover from their wounds so maybe ixalan is after they have recovered and the remaining gatewatch are tracking him down

  • Vincent Godin-Filion

Holy, Jace is sexy on this art.
Not a very good planeswalker card, but damn he’s good looking.

    • galen150

for a 3 drop its pretty good. as long as you keep him protected, he can slowly run away with the game if he and his copies get the ult off a couple times.

      • thegodamnBatman

I agree, but here’s the thing. You minus 2 and get an illusion that can leave as soon as it becomes a target. He stayes at 1 loyalty. That’s not good and doesn’t exactly make him a great candidate for your typical control deck. He needs a team to stay behind. I’m thinking pirates. Has a good curve and provides good protection while you tick him up.

    • Zombie

      – 3 mana, acceptable Loyalty
      – Consistent card draw
      – Protects himself
      – Ultimate can win the game quickly, very low loyalty cost to go off.

Calling this not very good is really shortsighted.

Finding a home for an aggressive Blue Planeswalker is the only issue. The power is not. Card’s good, it needs a home.

      • galen150

i wouldn’t call ‘loot once a turn, if a creature gets through’ consistent card draw, you don’t actually gain cards, just filter them really. agree with most of this though, its a good card that can run away with the game given the chance. wouldnt really call it aggressive either.

        • Zombie

Each copy results in an additional loot trigger, or more 2/2’s.

It’s definitely an aggressive Blue card.

      • Happy The Cat

also lets not forget he can go into super friends doubling season otk, he can ult when he comes out, and all the clones can ult when they come out, infinite jaces then can make 4x infinite jaces that instead pop out 2/2s.

    • Santuli

I think he’s been hiding his sexiness under much clothing and many layers. Glad to see him letting it all loose!

    • Njaal

Agreed. When I saw the blurry image on the spoiled sheet I initially thought this wouldn’t be Jace because he didn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d like to show some skin. Evidently he changed his mind.

  • jaya

    Jace been working out?
Anyways legendary planes? Can they be commanders in EDH now?

    • JD Farrell

Nope. Just like legendary artifacts or enchantments can’t be without being a creature.

      • thegodamnBatman

They have to clarify that. It’s not unlikely because we already have planeswalkers as commanders.

        • JD Farrell

          They have already clarified that.

          • thegodamnBatman

            Well that’s a shame.

        • Hedronal

Even if they hadn’t clarified that, that’s cards with the ability ” can be your commander.”. Those are a special case.

  • Bob

Oh no infinite Jace, doubling season just made superfriends out of control

  • Random Guy

Thing is, you need blockers for planeswalkers, but for this guy you also need attackers. His abilities are very strong for 3 cmc but he takes some work. Probably best in a tokens and/or superfriends deck where your opponent has more tempting targets.

  • Kevan Kramer

For anyone surpised we got a new Jace,
you shouldn’t have. He is the only GW member to not have a PW deck.
Guess what, he is going to get one with this set. I am also guessing we
will get a new oath either this set or the next one. Most likely the
    next one.

  • Savra

I was hoping for a jace planeswalker to be in this set. After what happened all i can think of his personalty is now like the song from the scottish pirate metal band Alestorm~ “F***ed with an Anchor”.

    • Rubythroat

Who needs more Jace walkers? Wenches and mead is what we need!

  • colin

This is the coolest Jace! The art is sweet and captures the pirates and magic theme perfectly. The cards abilities are very flavorful for Jace because of the illusion aspect. It’s only 3 mana but it doesn’t seem too overpowering. The ultimate is also pretty original and a perfect flavor win. Seems like a great combination of flavor and function, without being too strong like Jace the Mind Sculptor. That’s still the coolest Jace though who am I kidding.

    • LMB

      Enough

They have edited too many Jaces, Gideon or Chandra´s planeswalkers (The only one I like is Nissa)

They must give us other planeswalkers

  • Mugentsuki

Didn’t a certain pirate once say Jace would make a great pirate? Foreshadowing much? lol

  • Geddon

So, think this Jace remembers Vraska after Bolas dropped a pound of hurt on him? Are we going to get some forgotten-rivals stories, where Jace is the first mate on some pirate ship, asking himself why that Gorgon over there seems to hate him so much?

  • Stinker289

Looks like I need to pick up a few copies of mirror gallery for jank reasons.

  • Samuel Hall

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that with Jace bring mindwiped, this gives WoTC the perfect opportunity to recreate Jace so that he stops sucking so much while also keeping him as the face of magic

    • galen150

i thought he just fled so that didnt happen? to me it seemed like he just planeswalked away before permanent damage happened (hence why people probably arnt talking about it)

He felt himself being pulled across the Blind Eternities as the wave of darkness struck, and then he knew nothing at all.”

it seem more he fled before mind-death and not before suffering damage so how much he suffered is not known right now but i do believe he has forgotten things

        • galen150

oh no, it definitely did damage, and really sucked. I just don’t think it did PERMANENT damage like being “mindwiped” as Samuel put it, maybe forgetting a little bit sure. to me, it looks like after the fight, he just ended up there and he (and maybe others of the gatewatch) were demoralized and didnt join up again. looks to me like he’s been there a few months or so

          • Samuel Hall

Looks like I was mostly correct. Jace doesn’t remember who he is. The question now is will he remember later.

          • John Scott

probably like amnesia remembering certain things but forgetting the rest, but until story is released on it we don’t know for certain if it’s permanent/temporary or he just gave up after that completely devastating battle with bolas

  • thoptertoken

Hands down best art on a Jace card ever.

    • mehngo

I’d agree that its up there, but there are a lot of good Jace arts. I love the art for JTMS and book promo Jace a lot; also Unraveler of Secrets’ art is nice too.

  • Raymond Severa

Wouldnt the planeswalker rule cancel out the other 2?

    • galen150

they changed it. hence why this guy says legendary planeswalker and the tokens are non-legendary

edit: well, it will be changed with the release of this set.

      • Mack Tackleton

So I can have 2 or more Lilly’s of the veil out at once?

  • Chaospyke

Its not that I hate this jace, its pretty nice. I just hate the new rules. They are dumb.
I understand they want to make it simple for new players, but its really not that hard of a concept, And every new player i’ve met has understood it with one explanation.

But hey, Nice to have all the gatewatch shoot up in price. Oh, and pw commander decks… GOnna need me some aethersnaps

To be fair, Wotc usually recognizes mistakes better than other companies I’ve seen, So I’m hoping after a season, they’ll re-institute Pw rule and errata This Jace.

    • Evil Tactics

They will probably cut their losses here and keep these changes. To keep the legendary rule aligned with all permanents makes more sense for them down the line. To WotC, the mistake is that they did not introduce planeswalkers with the legendary rule in the first place, otherwise it would not be such a mess in the meantime.

If they haven’t reverted a previous change to the legendary rule before, I doubt they will now.

  • MrAptronym

Ugh, I really dislike superfriends decks already, not pleased to see them get this kind of boost.

  • TheFullMontzy

Damn! They made Jace hot! Lol

  • Writerofthings

Liliana of the Veil meet Liliana the Last Hope. You two will get along together just find on the battlefield in Modern.

  • Devon Ronald MacInnis

    Goes infinite with doubling season

    • TheFullMontzy

I was just thinking the same thing. Infinite Illusion tokens!

      • John Scott

        and then massacre wurm

  • Insight66
  • MrAptronym

I kind of hate how close the + ability is to new Tamiyo’s. I’d really like to see what the mechanical focus of each planeswalker is supposed to be, because Jace does a LOT. AT least this one actually seems like an illusionist.

  • kmk888

3 mana planeswalkers don’t have to look amazing to be very impactful. See Liliana, the Last Hope and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. Planeswalkers are just fundamentally more powerful the earlier they come down because it’s less likely the opponent has the board presence to kill them and it gives them more turns to accrue advantage as the game goes on.

I expect this card to be similarly playable in Standard, especially with the way they seem to be pushing blue pirate/raid aggro. Siren Stormtamer, Stormfleet Aerialist, Favorable Winds and in particular Skyship Plunderer will be best friends with this guy.

  • chataolauj

Jace: I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we’re bored we play in the woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook
“Run, run, lost boy, ” they say to me
    Away from all of reality

Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free.

  • Anthony George

    T1 – Siren Stormcaller
    T2 – Skyship Plunderer
T3 – Jace, Cunning Castaway, then use his +1, then attack with the Plunderer. Target Jace for the additional loyalty counter so he is at 5 loyalty.
