• Dr. Burn Crow

That sweet card advantage. Only downside is I’m pretty sure it only triggers once per turn.

    • EJ

Yes, but it will trigger on your opponent’s turns as well.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

That is also really nice. Not a commander for by UR, but Firemind welcomes her.

        • EJ

Actually, it would make a really good Commander filled with low-cost instants, rituals and cantrips. You could probably also do something broken with it involving Kobolds and Cloudstone Curio. Or reasonably broken. As you say, it only triggers once per turn.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

True, but I already love my Niv in the driver’s seat.

          • EJ

Yeah, but Niv-Mizzet costs 6 and it’s really tempting to put Curiosity / Ophidian Eye into the deck. So then the deck just becomes a 2-card infinite combo deck. And even if you resist the temptation to play Curiosity / Ophidian Eye, everyone thinks you’re playing those cards anyway.

The new general seems like more of a value engine. I appreciate the fact that they didn’t specify “instant or sorcery” or “non-creature” spell. You can just use it for incremental advantage, even in a creature-heavy deck.

This seems constructed-playable to me, and not just in Standard and Draft.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

I actually don’t run the eye. It just seems cheap to me.

  • Travoo Banks

seems like a nice commander, good for a type of strategy, but not a build around me

  • EJ

I feel a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of EDH players suddenly cried out in desperation for a blue-red Commander which cares about artifacts and were suddenly silenced. Oh, and nice touch, making it Tiny Leaders legal.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

It’ll work. I just wish it was more focused on artifacts.

      • EJ

Thinking about this further, you could very well put it in an artifact-heavy deck, it would be much worse if it specified “2nd Artifact Spell” or “2nd Colorless spell” instead of “2nd Spell”, and artifacts wouldn’t really fit the theme of the current block.

Looking at all the available options, this probably one of the best candidates for a blue-red artifact general. Though Nin + Stuffy Doll is still hilarious.

        • Dr. Burn Crow

          Agreed. I love that combo.

  • EJ

This would have fit into the red-blue Commander 2015 deck, just as Ayli would have fit into the black-white Commander 2015 deck. There might be a cycle of cards which were developed for Commander 2015, but which were pushed into Standard instead. If so, look for a blue-green legend which has something to do with unblockability (or possibly snakes), a black-green legend which has something to do with sacrifice or +1/+1 counters, and a red-white legend which has something to do with indestructibility or cares about your opponent’s life total.

    • Happy The Cat

I get the feeling that if it was snakes they might change it to scions or something tribal to this set

      • EJ

Blue-green could also be something that pumps your creatures.

        • Happy The Cat

true, true, it could also be a nice etb effect. I wouldn’t mind a creaturefall lotus cobra personally.

  • kmk888

Seems good in Commander. Probably good enough for Standard play. Nothing else.

    • EJ

It is a Merfolk, and it does benefit a red-blue deck which plays lots of small spells. Lightning Bolt / Snapcaster Mage / Lightning Bolt is good, but Lightning Bolt / Snapcaster Mage / Lightning Bolt / draw a card would be better.

      • kmk888

A deck that plays that package probably doesn’t want to tap out on the 3rd turn and then get it Abrupt Decayed, Bolted, Pathed, or anything else for no value. If it sees play, it will do so because of the sequence: T3 land, Jori En, Gitaxian Probe for 2 cards.

    • Lord_of_Riots

Haha no way on EDH. This is hot garbage. I’d look at her if she had hexproof or if she activated on the first spell, but as is she’s awful.

      • kmk888

You don’t think so? Alright. Well I actually play little to no EDH so I’ll take your word for it.

  • EJ

Someone should probably note that there is some synergy with the Surge mechanic.

  • MrAptronym

My Arjun deck may be new, but it is getting a lot of tech already.

  • Han Solo II

    Moonfolk? Lol, Kamigawa oh yeah

    • nightshade88

      Ehm… What?

      • eltratzo

the transcript (obviously incorrectly) says or rather said at my time of writing “Moonfolk, Wizard” and the artwork is kinda sorta vague enough to believe that, ….if you don’t read the card itself ….or basically anything else exept for that word

        • nightshade88

I just read the card and not the transcript typo XD

          • eltratzo

Honestly I don’t blame you. I myself only found the typo while explicitly looking for the reason for Solo’s strange comment. ^^

  • Jazzyboy1

Should be “Whenever you or a teammate casts the second spell of a turn, draw a card’. Then it would be awesome. As it is, it’s kinda sorta okay in Limited, but really, there are a lot of commons I’d rather pull than this.

    • BlockOnBlocks

I definitely agree with the first statement. WotC said that this set is heavily based on teamwork, but so far the amount of teamwork-type cards has not been overwhelming.

  • Jaya

Very good, if anything we know is that card advantage usually wins you the game. Sure isnt azami, but its cheaper and splashs red. Very good for an extra turn deck, very easy to build around and strong.

  • Kameenook

This card seems great, less so in modern because of bolt, but maybe more so in Legacy because it’s short on removal.

  • Happy The Cat

it could have been beyond the first spell you cast this turn and I would have liked it
it could have been whenever the second spell is cast each turn or heck, whenever YOU cast the second spell of a turn and I would have liked it
as is, this is a bad, slow divination that will just catch a bullet from any creature bigger than it. no perks, no bonus, just jump through hoops and draw a single card. if it was scry 2 draw I would have liked it but no.
the only thing this card does in standard is act as discard fodder for j,vp.

    • Nick Hannah

Hey, at least storm players can play EDH now am I right?

      • Happy The Cat

instead of Arjun, Jhoira, Keranos,Melek,Mizzix, Narset, Nin, both Niv-Mizzets,Riku,Tibor & Lumia and the many commanders you could play if you would drop blue or red and go mono, sure.

        • Nick Hannah

Well, she’s certainly the cheapest of all of those, besides Nin.

      • Storm Crow

My storm deck plays Narset, not this, and this is nowhere close to good enough. If it drew for every spell after the first it would be fine.

        • Nick Hannah

People actually play storm in EDH? What is wrong with this planet?

          • Storm Crow

Oh yeah it’s a lot of fun.

          • Nick Hannah

Well I hope your putting dragonstorm to good use, then.

          • Nharzhool

You’re*, My friend uses a Storm card as one of his Win-Cons in his Melek deck. It’s a legit strategy.

          • Jazzyboy1

Grapeshot is heavily played in pretty much every deck that can play infinite spells. It’s one of Narset’s win-cons in the decks that use the Enter the Infinite+Omniscience combo.

    • Melissa Juice

Casting two spells isn’t jumping through hoops.

      • Happy The Cat

you only get the effect if you cast two spells. for this to get full value you need to cast two spells on your turn and two on your opponent’s turn every time. therefore hoop.
honestly, I’d rather just play Divination and not have to use four spells .

  • Ryū

Didn’t think she’d be getting a card. Might use her as a commander.

  • Zombie

Neat possibilities as a General, but still not as good as other UR Generals.

Might see Tempo play in Standard if it’s possible.

  • Nanya

    Izzet a Merfolk?

    …Yes, yes it is.

  • Aarhg

There’s definitely a fun tiny leaders deck waiting to be built here.
