  • Desthian

all her effects have to do with zombie issues. I love it! wuuu!

    • Travis Stronach

Me too. This is a much appreciated addition to a UB zombie edh deck I’m putting together.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

        Who’s your commander?

        • Travis Stronach

          Leaning towards Grimgrin.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

Grimgrin is good, I like Gisa and Geralf, too.

    • Jordan

lol have you read the story? The whole plane is full of zombies, and when things die, they come back as zombies.

  • ShannoSauro

    MY GISA EDH SAYS TY

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Is this what people who love Beyoncé feel whenever she does anything? If so, I finally understand why people love Beyoncé. It’s the Lili I’ve been waiting for for years. She’s a true necromancer now.

    • Kaiser

Liliana zombie matters? this is my dream? i love her

      • Dr. Burn Crow

Mine, too. I love necromancy so much.

  • Calvin

    Decent

  • Serj

    Oh this is a planswalker

  • prplprince

damn girl where did you get that dress it is fly as phluck

    • KrakenHunter

      Waifu material right here

  • Scathain

Neat, they printed Liliana with a +1 ability that creates a zombie token, as requested. All three of those abilities are solid, and you normally have to pay 4 mana just for her middle ability these days (Zombify and Vigor Mortis). Pretty easy to get to her ult, too.

    • Thomas Luffman

4 mana? Refurbish is the exception and not the rule now. 4B is what you usually pay.

  • Jay Kilian

Mixed with embalming these abilities are nuts. White black zombies could be a thing?

  • zDRIBAS

this card is powerfull enough to see modern play, normaly 5-color planeswalker are too slow, only a few like Gideon Jura and rarily Ajani,Mentor of heros gets some play, but this one is really good!

    • Kameenook

I would wonder if it could see modern play. The +1 seems great, the zombie is a thing and self-mill is almost always welcome, the -3 seems like what really shines, because returning some high impact creatures would be great.

  • Justin Marion

awesome. I’d be interested to see if this could make it in another format. might be too expensive though.

  • Winter Trabex

Really good if you’re running Gearhulks.

  • Jordan

Glorybringer, attack for 4, exert to kill something. If they kill it, you drop Lili, get it back, attack for 4, exert to kill something.

  • Kumrag

-3 doesn’t say kill target Gideon

    rip

    • Happy The Cat

dunno, there is a lot of haste creatures that could hit, that probably can kill him.

      • Kumrag

is only joke my friend :^) Though compared to the big bad Gideon deck, this isn’t good enough. Still, a really powerful lili

      • Jordan

        *cough* Glorybringer

Then imagine exerting it to kill a creature. -3 lili to get it back later, attack and exert to kill another.

    • Jordan

Doesn’t need to. Glorybringer does that for you.

      • DJPad

Assuming you’re on the play and they don’t have heart of kiran

        • Jordan

you’re playing black. At worst, you’re trading Lily for the dragon and 4 life because they attacked her. At best, you get your dragon and you Push the heart, or grasp it.

  • Julna Buras

Hm. I’ll have to playtest to see how well this does in my control shell, but she’s definitely good in creature-based decks. And that art is fantastic.

    • Jacob Bachand

She will be great in UBx control believe me. Just with Kalitas and Torrential she is insane

  • Peter Cassell

Here’s an actually decent walker. I’d feel good about T4 kalitas. Opp kills kalitas. t5 liliana +1 for a zombie. T6 -3 lili to reanimate kalitas holding up removal/ counter + the kalitas sac option.

Just one of the many possibilities that comes to mind!

    • Jordan

Why not just use her -3 to bring back Kalitas on t5? You get a lifelinking blocker….

      • Peter Cassell

Its all hypothetical mental magic but I feel like plussing her to keeps her loyalty high whilst minussing straight away leaves you potentially falling foul of removal for kalitas or even worse exerted glorybringer.

        • Jordan

I mean maybe? but you’re giving them another turn to answer her.

    • Jacob Bachand

Yup, she’s going in my Esper Control Deck with Kalitas and Torrential Gearhulk for sure. Maybe even Oath of Liliana or The Last Hope

    • Jacob Bachand

And Peter, imagine wiping the board with her Ultra with Kalitas out. Drooooool

  • Zombie

Better than Gideon of the Trials.

    • Kumrag

      nice b8

      • Zombie

The best decks in Standard right now are all black and can all abuse this.

        • Kumrag

I don’t know what’s in standard, I’m just comparing the two PWs side-by-side

          • Zombie

Even in a vacuum, the point still stands.

        • Nall

The best decks in standard currently are 4C Saheeli and Mardu Vehicles. 4C Saheeli doesn’t have black and even if Mardu Vehicles supported BB it doesn’t have any good ways to abuse this card. I’m hoping for some kind of fat creature with cycling for reanimation, but without that I don’t really see this being useful outside of BG Delirium or Prized Amalgam strats.

          • Zombie

Saheeli is not the best deck. GB beats it handily in stats.

Saheeli is being hated out by every sideboard in Standard.

          • Nall

Where do you get your stats? I’m seeing majority Saheeli and Mardu with spatterings of Tower and GB in all the recent GPs and Opens, along with an unanimous agreement of those two being top dogs among the pro community.

          • Zombie

Mardu/GB occupy on average 6 of 8 decks in the Top 8 of most serious tournaments, with Tower and Saheeli Combo usually squeezing in at the end.

There was one GP where the entire Top 8 was just 8 Mardu/GB decks.

There’s a reason I quit Standard, it was heading to stagnation like this.

And there’s a reason most pros (and most other Gold+ players like myself) regard this as one of the worst Standard environment in years.

Wizards polled on Twitter I think a month or two ago now (pre-Emrakul ban) on the health of Standard, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being an immaculate and perfect format.

Every single pro that responded rated Standard no higher than 3, and their opinions haven’t swayed.

          • Nall

Looking at the last 4 GP top 8’s, BG occupied 3 slots, Copycat took 10 slots, and Mardu took 15 slots. I’ll agree standard is stagnant. Though my original point was that the top decks in standard can’t all play this Liliana, let alone be able to abuse it.

          • Zombie

Oh, sure, conveniently overlook the two prior GP’s and all of the other SCG tournaments that put BGX decks up to more than double the showing of Copy Cat variants.

A GP in February had a Top 8 that was literally almost entirely BG variant decks.

If you’re gonna try to prove a point, don’t cut off data to fit your narrative.

          • Nall

The format wasn’t settled in February. It was still fluctuating between mardu, saheeli, and BG. Now that saheeli and mardu are tuned, you can see BG has put no significant results up in the past two months. I didn’t exclude it to “fit my narrative”, I excluded it because it’s not relevant anymore.

          • Zombie

You’re saying that people experimenting with varied deck lists makes the format settled NOW?

            I’m done here. Lmao.

          • Nall

Umm, I’m pretty sure that’s not what I said…but alright.

          • Zombie

That’s what’s happening now, though. You implied the format is more settled now then before big shake ups happened.

            Which isn’t accurate.

          • Nall

Oh, we disagree on when the format is considered to be settled, we’ll just throw that point out then.

I instead looked at the top 8’s of the PT, GP’s, Opens, and Major MTGO tourneys of Aether Revolt Standard and tallied up the finishes of the big three. Of these tournaments Mardu Vehicles occupied 35%, Copycat was 27%, and BG was 23%. While the gap between Copycat and BG closes up quite a bit, BG still does not exceed it.

And most importantly even if we work under the assumption that BG is up there with the best decks, the original claim that all the best decks in standard can use and abuse this Liliana just isn’t true.

          • Jacob Bachand

Sorry to strongly disagree but I hate Mardu and Saheeli with a passion, but yes they are by far the best decks in standard

          • Zombie

Disagreeing doesn’t matter when GB puts up the better numbers than Copy Cat. GB variants have dominated standard alongside Mardu since the release of Aether Revolt.

Copy Cat has had small spurts of success, but is still outpopulated by Mardu and GB

          • Nall

            That is simply not true.

    • Jordan

For once I’m almost inclined to agree with Zombie. Trials is good, like really good in that it’s all around good. But this card is really good with a specific purpose. That purpose being card advantage.

I really like using her after dropping a Glorybringer to get my dragon back after it’s exerted to kill something. Only to swing for another 4 and kill something else.

This + Red or Black Gearhulk just makes me chuckle.

      • MTG fan

For Once? LOL. Also, this card is great in red black madness. Or even blue black zombies.

      • Jacob Bachand

Her with Torrential Gearhulk, Kalitas and Oath of Liliana in my Esper Control Deck. Yummy

  • KrakenHunter

    waifu material.

a bit expensive but still solid.

  • Ben Peterson

This goes straight into my Karador deck.

  • jhp

in standard cycling creatures and this.

    Archfiend of Ifnir…

  • kmk888

Okay so I will go ahead and say that facewalkers are a very real problem to the standard format and this card is completely overpowered. On the order of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar even. The -3 is the reason to play reanimator this season, and the +1 is secretly the most horrifying part of the card. If we’ve learned anything as a magic community, it’s that you’re supposed to -1 or 0 to create board presence. Creating 2/2s should never be allowed with a +1 ability, and she refuels your graveyard for herself and embalm and aftermath. This card is an abomination and will soar to $50 or $60 after SCG week 1 or the Pro Tour.

    However.

This is easily my favorite planeswalker ever printed and it’s not close. Liliana is my favorite character, reanimation is one of my preferred strategies, and zombies are my favorite creature type. I have 4 cryptbreaker, 4 prized amalgams, and 4 Haunted Dead sitting at home waiting for this beautiful temptress. I’m preordering my playset and I won’t stop playing her until she rotates or is banned.

I for one, welcome our new reanimation overlords.

    • DJPad

She won’t be $50 because she has next to zero modern or legacy value.

      • Kevan Kramer

Sadly those formats are not the only formats that pushes cards’ prices.

        • DJPad

No, but they are the ones that push planeswalkers to $50.

        • sansmyhands

True, but if Gideon, Ally of Zendikar isn’t $50, this won’t be either. Lili the Last Hope is still as high as it is because it sees standard and modern play.

          • DJPad

And her price isn’t suppressed by masterpieces.

    • Cthulhooo

She’s actually quite reasonable in comparison to Gideon Ally of Zendikar or Gideon the Platinum Angel. Also no way 50$. No one will play this in eternal formats.

      • Kevan Kramer

EDH is an eternal format and that is why her price will remain high

        • Cthulhooo

Can EDH single handedly significantly drive the price of a new card?

          • Jordan

Yes. Look at some of the Nicol bolas cards. His dragon card was $50 by itself at one point. And it only see’s play in EDH.

          • DJPad

When was that? The only version anywhere close to that is the FTV version and only because the art is awesome and it was a very limited release. This is a standard mythic in a set with masterpieces, it will not stay above $20 and likely will settle around 10-15 while in standard.

          • Jordan

They never said when or how. They asked if EDH can single handedly drive the price of a new card.

          • DJPad

Again, nobody is doubting that EDH demand can drive the price of a card. What I was doubting is that EDH alone will cause a standard mythic in a masterpiece set to go anywhere near $40-50 as some are suggesting. This is a $10-15 dollar mythic long-term. It hurts that the reanimation effect can only target your own graveyard.

          • Thomas Luffman

Well, if another card as broken in EDH as doubling season gets printed, it might be $50 in 5-6 years.

          • Shagoth

            Doubling Season

    • Giby86 .

I’d suggest you wait on that preorder. Hype is known to bloat prices a lot. Remember Chandra, Torch of Defiance? Yeah. If it preorders for something ridiculous like that, just wait for the Pro Tour. If the price is still high, then man up and open your wallet. If by chance it drops, you’ve saved tens of dollars.

      • Jordan

Eh. This lili was only $20. That’s a pretty safe preorder.

      • kmk888

Not a chance. Last time I preordered a planeswalker was Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy and I remember it vividly. When you see a card that you’re sure is busted, sometimes you have to make that gamble.

Also have you READ this card? It’s insane!

        • Giby86 .

Yes but it costs 5, plus it’s going to have to fight against a lot of graveyard hate, plus it’s not going to be used outside of standard…I mean, it’s strong, no doubt, but I saw the same kind of “it’s obviously insane” hype with Chandra, and look what happened. Too little information, too much of a risk.

    • Erik López Barcelar

Do you play reanimation modern? I would appreciate some advice, since I have a casual zombi tribal and if this Lili isnt too expensive Im considering getting two copies. The first and last abilites could work really well in a reanimation zombi tribal.

      • kmk888

Zombies in Modern seems to work most effectively as an aggro deck, to capitalize on the blatant power of Gravecrawler and Geralf’s Messenger. I don’t know if there’s room in that type of shell for a 5 mana planeswalker, regardless of power level.

What’s more, competitive Modern as a whole is an extremely fast, unforgiving format. The only way this will see play is if it reanimates something that guaranteed ends the game. Unfortunately, Gifts Ungiven for a game ender + Unburial Rites or Faithless Looting + Goryo’s Vengeance both do this job already for fewer cards and less mana, respectively.

A casual zombie deck of almost any kind would love this card though.

    • Jacob Bachand

All valid points and Honestly she is balanced enough to be good in decks not looking to synergies with all of her abilities. Like my Esper Control Deck in standard, she works well with Kalitas, returning Torrential Gearhulk with her minus 3 is insane, her plus 1 with an Oath of Liliana out is awesome, AND her wrath if God board whipe ultimate is what control loves (especially with Kalitas in play, sooooo many zombies) she will be replacing my 2x Jace in my Esper Control Deck for sure! Great card

  • Stef

Top 2 Planeswalker artworks! The other one is the foil version. This is what Planeswalkers should be like in every aspect. Mid to high cmc, powerful abilities, all abilities are useful and they are flavorful, can protect itself so it actually sticks around for more than one turn as you would expect from the most powerful mages of the multiverse. And the artwork is worthy of representing the game.

  • Nanya

I love everything about this card.

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

She does everything I want, and I want everything she does ;D

  • Brian Schmidt

This is like a wet dream for Meren EDH players.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

      Shhhhh, don’t tell my wife.

  • Derek Niles

    this seems sooo good

  • Eli Eyal Broide

    Sidisi EDH… there you go!

    • Jonas Candy

      yeah same

  • NC

Well I want this for my Gisa and Geralf EDH anyways.

  • Blahblahblahbla

Oh god… it’s going to take me a while to figure out what to swap out of my Ayli EDH deck for this, but it must be done.

  • Dave

    Best effin Liliana art!

    • Julna Buras

      I whole-heartedly agree

    • DasIsFuck

I vote the Oath of Liliana!

  • Zombie

She’s not good enough for Modern.

But neither is Gideon of the Trials, really. So eh?

    • Thomas Luffman

Gideon will be good if W/U control ever actually exists in modern again. At least for the board, adnuas can’t beat it and it represents a prison term+ 4-5 lifegain against any creature deck

      • Zombie

U/W already exists, it just won a GP

  • Deadly Berry

I think all her abilities are balanced; I do believe she enters play with at least 1 more counter that she should. A strong PW overall, and the best Lili since the of the Veil one, my opinion.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

I would say it’s about on par with the last hope, but nonetheless, very powerful.

  • Gord

Karador is excited to play with this

  • Shagoth

Noah, good design! Might see a little modern Gorori’s/Throught the Breach play in sideboards.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Got my preorder in. If nothing else, I have this, my darling wife and my infant son going for me.

  • Arcus Diabolus

Well, just pulled one last night. All I can do now is watch the price. If the price goes up, I’ll hold onto it and see just how much i can get for it. If it drops, well then I have a pretty good planeswalker for my modern/casual Zombies.

    • Solarstorm flare

      Same!
