Protection from red

Elemental creatures you control get +1/+1.

When Master of Waves enters the battlefield, put a number of 1/0 blue Elemental creature tokens onto the battlefield equal to your devotion to blue. (Each Blue Mana in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to blue.)

  • Argentum Dens

Blue just got aggro, say goodbye modern

    • Mike Thomas

Not really. 4 cc is NOT aggro. It may be aggressive for blue, but not for standard, and definitely not for modern. As well, despite it being pro red, it’s still susceptable to all sorts of removal. Which would kill all the tokens.

      • Leonardo Fabian Muñoz Duarte

Young pyromancer and this guy in Izzet…

        • Chiroptera

and ogre battle driver….. WOOP WOOP 5 4/1 UP YOUR FACE

    • Antares

Not so much, but it’s definitely a fun card. This set is BURSTING with flavor. Personally, I think a U/W bounce deck will work great with this card, especially if you use a lot of the hybrid cards from Azorius. It could definitely provide an extremely strong finisher for the right deck. Another possibility would be to use Izzet and hybrid cards (though I think Azorius’s flyers would work better).

  • Josh Kaufman

This is a really weird card, especially in a standard without counterspells. I mean I want to see this in fish though with phantasmal image

  • David Meyers

1/0 tokens… and I thought Germ tokens were funny.

  • CodyGozRawr

This, master biomancer, and maybe even stolen identity.

  • Shadow

Turn 4: Master of the Waves
    Turn 5 Progenitor Mimic
    Turn 6: GG

    • Zombie

      Opponent’s Turn 6: Planar Cleansing

      *Team Rocket’s blasting off aggaaaaaaaaiiiinn…”

  • MtgCounterBalance

you kill the master and the waves dissapear

  • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Why is that Mystic? I’d hate myself opening one of these.
How many tokens do you think you’re going to get out of this 4-drop? 2? 3? That’s enough for Limited. Yeah, right.

    • cumonmysprinkles

      ya this is a pretty bad mystic. Its an awesome mythic though man. even if its only 3 tokens thats still 8 power for 4 mana. worse comes to worse its 4 power for 4 mana;

    • CodyGozRawr

MYTHIC It’s called MYTHIC not mystic!!!! And this card is amazing, yeah worst case scenario 2 or 3 tokens, but think of it this way, for 4 mana you get at least 2 2/1’s, at worst not that good, but if you have a couple other blue permanents out, that’s at least 3 or 4 2/1’s for 4, if you had a master biomancer out, then that’s at least 3 4/3’s for 4, that’s epic! Then if you play another one out then all those tokens just got even bigger, plus there’s more of them.
      Turn 1: Island Cloudfin raptor
Turn 2: island, any 2 or 1 drop blue creature/ Tidebinder mage, (1-2 blue in mana cost)
Turn 3, island phantom warrior/ simic manipulator/ wall of frost (both have 2 blue in their mana costs)
Turn 4, island, this, at least 4 tokens, plus him, that’s 5 2/1’s for 4 mana, you could even get up to 6 tokens, that’s 7 2/1’s for 4 mana,
Turn 5, Clone/ that card that’s going to be in this set with heroic it becomes a copy of target creature/ plains, path of bravery, making them all 3/2’s, swing for the win
Turn 6, same as turn 5, or forest, progenitor mimic, GG.

      • CodyGozRawr

And that’s just if you play it turn 4, you could wait a turn or 2 and get even more tokens/ have even bigger ones.

      • Fbn Dnl Schlr

I am not an english native speaker… person human kind of guy. As an excuse, I hear more people say Mystic than Mythic… simply for the fact that no one can pronounce Mythic correctly here.

What format are you talking about? Standard? I can see this creature in Legacy, okay. And what do you think your opponent is doing? Nothing? For example, Electrickery and Pyroclasm are played in Standard and Legacy, respectively. I too can put together a list of random cards that kill you on turn 6.

    • YouGotFranked

i would be pretty happy to get 2-3 tokens out of this guy. 6-8 power on the board for 4 mana is nothing to shrug off.

      • Fbn Dnl Schlr

… which becomes 0 if the master is blown up, even with protection from red. Sorry, I can’t see him being a factor in Standard. At the moment he’s selling for $ 2 in Europe.

        • The Guild Master

Its meant to be like the waves calm down after he leaves (master of waves) and he’s decent for his cost late game, get like 6 2/1s on the field. Devotion is all the blue mana symbols in the costs of permanents, and all the islands or blue dual lands you control. He’s good against a Rakdos, Selesnya token or goblin deck for chump-blocking all the creatures. For 4 mana its good in a Simic deck, with Gyre Sage, use 1 island for it and gyre sage for the rest, then use a populate card that can either be used with green mana or white, and you can pop your tokens, thus more 2/1’s. ‘Nuff Said

          • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Yeah, I totally miss-analyzed the meta after Theros back then. I simply didn’t have mono-colored devotion decks like blue & black on my radar when I wrote this. But I guess most people didn’t. Otherwise a major buyout of Specter (and in parts, Reckoner) would’ve happened sooner.

Populating 1/0 tokens is nothing I call advantage though. These tokens are meant for attacking, not chump blocking… but I guess you don’t play Standard.

  • james

read that creature type……….. read it again………… then look at the word devotion…… then recall all merfolk………

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

      I can’t believe what I’m seeing *_*
      I love it

  • Andy Dondes

This card is so bad it makes me cry. SHOULD BE AN UNCOMMON!

    • da

He should not be an uncommon, worst case scenario you have 4 for a two 2/1, one of which has pro red.

Chances are you’ll have 3-4 devotion to blue when he enters the battlefield making it 4 for 5-6 2/1’s (total of 10-12 power for 4 mana)

In the right deck you can get 6 up to elemental on just turn four. More if you wait a turn or two to cast it. (Making 7 2/1’s, or 14 power for FOUR FREAK’N MANA)

On top of that he’s a lord for elemental (Better than the current one in my opinion) and it holds a niche for blue aggro decks.

They’ve printed allot worst mythic rares in the past.

      plus doubly seasons, etc.

      • bigbetz99

Cloudshift with this creature is pretty bad-apple if u ask me.

        • da

Not really, if it gets flickered, sure all your tokens die, but when it re-enters the battle field new tokens are created. Comboing with cards like Soul Warden and Blood Artist… or you just get more tokens if you have two of him on the field (it’s shame that Cackling Counterpart is rotating out, instant speed response to a doom blade would be great.. you could just counter too).

      • Leonardo Duarte

Don’t forget young piromancer and door of destinies.

You’ll swing HARD at their faces.

    • nitro

or better yet, red blue deck with this and hammer of purphormous

  • Dan Vongsa

    Blue spawner! :D
    Easy at that too.

  • bigbetz99

    • Blake

it doesn’t work because when he leaves the battlefield the elementals on the field become 1/0 again so they would be destroyed. If you had two master of waves on the battlefield it would be a different story.

      • Flying Turtle

This is wrong. The tokens would only be sent to the graveyard as a state-based action, but because cloudshift exiles and then immediately makes the creature come back, state-based action are not checked. No creatures will be sent to the graveyard.
