Mistcutter Hydra - Theros Spoiler

Mistcutter Hydra

  • Color: Green
  • Type: Creature - Hydra
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Set:

Mistcutter Hydra can’t be countered.

Haste, protection from blue

Mistcutter Hydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.

  • Red

I’m unsure if it is good or bad.

    • Blue

This plus the new R/G planeswalker’s +1? Put that into consideration.

      • Joshua McTiernan

Why do so many cards nowadays hate you?

        • Blue

          It’s hard being king.

    • Zombie

Let me solve this quandary for you: It’s the second best Hydra in Standard.

  • Mason

the level of hate for blue in this one makes me feel pretty good

  • GramMAR Freak

This card just earned every love I ever had. All of my love is going into this card right here. It may never see play, or it may see all of the play, but regardless, this card gets all of my love.

  • Josh Kaufman

Was skylasher good? …. um no… Just making sure.

And not having good blue is bad for magic. We need control, midrange and aggro. This is going to lead to just aggro decks and creature on creature hate crimes.

    • Zombie

Skylasher was bad because it was a 2/2 that just kinda sat there and did nothing.

This Hydra has the potential to swing for HUGE numbers if you play it turn 4-5 after Kalonian Hydra, depending on your ramp situation.

      It has disgustingly high potential.

    • TehBadaxe

Did you see curse of the swine or play rapid hybridization?? Those are spells designed for big creatures like hydras. Hydras also hate bounce, cuz that means a turn of tap-out was wasted.. This one won’t care. Blue is good in this upcoming cycle, and being protected from it makes that card good. I’m gonna do grixis midrange that sideboards to control or aggro as necessary… Being unable to pig-ify or burn that is gonna be annoying. I might lose game one from not enough kill spells being drawn. I mean, I hope no one likes this card, so I won’t have to deal with it, but I don’t think that’ll be the case.

    • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Unfortunately this is what Wizards wants. Creatures are getting better and better and are dominating Standard since Stoneblade got the banhammer. You want to play with creatures? Play Standard. You want Combo? Play Legacy. Midrange? Modern or Pauper. This leaves EDH and Vintage for Control.

  • jeremysclone

So it always comes in as a 0/0 right? Since it can’t be countered

    • Zombie

    • Orion Moore

      Ah ah ah, lol

    • james chapman

      LOL

    • MtgMind-Welder98

That’s one of the funniest puns I have ever herd in magic…or Izzet?

  • Joshua McTiernan

Mono Green, Hate u Blue, Fatties; this is the name of the deck that’s going to be made. Turn four Xenagoes, turn five Kalonian Hydra, turn six this guy swing 16!

    • GramMAR Freak

      Turn 1: Elf
      Turn 2: Domri
      Turn 3: Xenagos
      Turn 4: Hydra
      Turn 5: This

Plus everything in between because Xenagos and Elves are ridiculous. This is going to be a beautifully aggressive standard. I’m sure there’s a way to do turn 3 Xenagos and Hydra into Turn 4 Swing for 16 – like 2 elves on turn 2 instead of Domri. That seems equally ridiculous to me, and then you’re actually swinging for like 22.

  • Zombie

This and Kalonian Hydra are going to make for a very, very exciting mono green Elves deck.

    • Yusuke

Good thing about this card is that it has haste, so you can do crazy on the next turn you cast Kalonian Hydra by casting this for X5 and swing for a lot.

  • ordealizer

    you play then ordeal

  • Ben Ehren

with my uGb deck i dont know whether i want this or not with other hydras also up and at them, definite sideboard in case of enemy blue

  • Trolly

    Terrible, dies to doom blade

    • MtgMind-Welder98

Really? Snapcaster Mage, Tarmogoyf, Thundermaw Hellkite, and other great non-black cards without hexproof and shroud die to Doombade and no one says there bad.

      • Matt Stone

        He is being sarcastic bruv.

        • MtgMind-Welder98

          Well maybe bad sorry (:(

    • MtgMind-Welder98

Sorry didn’t mean to get harsh :(

  • Kevan Kramer

One of the best hydras ever because of haste and protection from blue is an added bonus.

    • jake

not to mention this hydra will eat primordial hydra

  • Munashe

Cards like this are NOT good for the game.

This one card basically means that you cannot play mono blue against anything with green in it. Just in case they have this card which will pwn you no matter what in 2-3 rounds. Possibly one if there is a kalonian hydra out previous turn.

I thought that Theros was suppose to be the return of mono color decks, because blue is not viable now with this cheat.

    • richardshort2001

Who the hell’s been playing mono blue anyway? If you insist on it, sideboard the new artifact horsey and you get chump blockers. Problem solved.

    • Zipy

Or you can “Curse of the swine” your own guys to chump bock it. So many options.

      • Guest

        curse is a sorcery…

  • Matt Stone

I plan on playing B/G control post rotation, and this is solid sideboard material for me, in fact, this is going to probably push me over the edge in control mirrors playing blue. Quality card. Haste around counters and dodges Charms and D-Sphere.

  • james chapman

This could be fun in a BG deck with crypt ghast, turn 5 could in theory (overgrown tomb for green) swing for a 10/10 haste

    • Shadow

Your math is a bit off, you could swing for waaaaaaaaay more

      turn 1 land, arbor elf
Turn 2 land farseek arbor elf
turn 3 land cryptghast, (2 arbor elves untapped so 4 mana floating maybe corpsejack menace?)
turn 4 land kalonian hydra kalonian hydra
Turn 5 land then mistcutter hydra for 15, corpsejack trigger makes it a 30, then when it attacks it doubles, twice with corpsejacks ability still on the stack, not doing the math but that would be a very serious GG

      • james chapman

I only utilized crypt ghast (T4).
on T5 we could have 5 swamps, tap for 10. to make a 9/9 haste. (i was off about the 10/10, 1G goes into his casting)
with all the mana ramp you can play before t4, this card can be pretty nasty, haha

      • Gunbad

        Far seek is leaving standard

        • badgun

Yes it is when the first set of the 2015 core set comes out

          • Kelsie

Core sets dont rotate out when other core sets come in, they rotate out when a new block is introduced. Farseek and arbor elf are both from M13, so they will not see standard with this hydra.

      • Pat Whitbeck

i block with my 1/1 spirit tokens.

  • Dershudbeacreaturescalebird

No scale birds make me sad
But on a brighter note scale humans under the rock crag

  • jake

its primordial hydra with a splas of screww you lol

  • THEGREAT

    T1; Stomping Ground, Elvish Mystic
T2: Forest, Elvish Mystic, Sylvan Caryatid
T3: Mountain, Elvish Mystic, Xanagos (+1), kalonian
T4: Forest, Nylea, +1 Xany, play Mistcutter Hydra for 10
    Hit you for 28 trample.

    Spinner-face! Your argument is invalid.
