  • Dada

    Badass AF

  • Marvin Sürig

A promise is a promise. You can say everything about Nicol Bolas but he keeps his word. . . in some kind of way

    • Nortrom Silencer

“We need to build a wall around the Multiverse, and (others) Planeswalkers are going to pay for it” -Nicol Bolas, God-President

      • Happy The Cat

Bolas does think Bigly, have you seen his creations? they are UGE.
        #Bolasesmultiverse2017

      • Marvin Sürig

You’re confusing something with Teferi :D

  • Coat

Being turned into a giant, blue, killer zombie robot strips away the black mana…………that makes sense.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Bolas made him into what he needed.

      • Happy The Cat

the 3rd response to complaints that Wizards had been getting about not making red viable, and the 2nd to be easly playable outside of standard?

  • Daniel Kaine Allen

This is actually amazing. Might be just the upper hand red needs to dominate the pro tour.

    • Mov

Competes with glorybringer. Won’t see play.

      • Daniel Kaine Allen

On the contrary, this card could easily help bring glorybringer in. Alternatively, it could easily kill a creature and deal player damage every turn, something glorybringer can’t do.

        • Mov

Lack of haste dude. Glorybringer is great because it requires your opponent to have an answer for it immediately when it is cast/hits the battlefield. This thing gives your opponent a turn to kill it before it does much of anything (except give you a few mana post combat IF you are already the beatdown).

The game is full of 5 drops with very good abilities that don’t see play because they don’t give you value without surviving a turn. The Gitrog Monster says hello.

          • Robert FakeLastName

though to be fair the graveyard interaction needed to push gitrog over the top is not in standard.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

I will call him Scorchy the Burninator

    • Kaiser

Sounds like a Dofus event Boss

  • Absinthman

Just feels strange that he’s not black. Eternalize lead me to believe that Eternals were supposed to be black.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

      Racist!
Kidding, I think they just did it for set balancing. Think of it as Bolas made him into what he needed him to be.

      • Absinthman

Of course, he’s an almighty dragon :-D. Just for the reasons stated above, I was wondering about it.

    • Kaiser

Eternalize not need to feels black, yeah he becomes into a black permanent but he needs to feels red. If all the eternalize feels like black cards well…this set need to be called Hour of Blackout

      • Absinthman

What I meant is that Eternalize ability always creates black tokens. And they look exacly like this: blue-armored zombie dudes. That’s why I was mentioning it.

        • Kaiser

yes i know that but not all the eternals are goin to appear like Eternalize tokens cause this is a short set. That aaand neheb already have a mortal car in Amonkhet.

        • Hedronal

But this is someone capable of being an Eternal, and legendary hence also an individual, at the same time. Plus Bolas says he approves in the flavor text, and he determined what made an Eternal.

  • alexander macrae

I’m very happy that Wizards is finding apropriate ways to give red some ramp. Red deserves ramp.

  • Delipha

    Give me all the minotaurs!!

  • Kaiser

I was waiting for you Neheb XD

  • Giby86 .

    It does WHAT??

  • Brandon Bilodeau

Having problems with mana in red ? How about we merge dark ritual and lightning bolt together !

  • Tom Cyrillus Arditi

    Schwing!

  • Liam Maiher

This seems sweet in rakdos edh

  • Bige Boiy

Legendary Creature – Zombie Minotaur Warrior

  • Jackson Means

this mana ability would suggest that the lazotep somehow allows the zombies to drain life force, or mana, out of their victims for bolas’ use, if only it were a named ability!

    • Tolle

FYI. This isn’t a mana ability. For a triggered ability to be a mana ability it must trigger off an activated mana ability. See 605.1b

      • Jackson Means

Yeah I didn’t mean officially, I was differentiating it from his afflict ability.

        • Tolle

          Fair enough. Just making sure.

  • Jonathan Reynolds

This seems so easy to break. For instance: Aggravated Assault.

  • Jacob Kodicovic

BREAKING NEWS: Wizards has officially lost their marbles. Head Designer Mark R osewater was recently admitted to an insane asylum. Sources claim that Rosewater yelled something about Unstable, which psychologists have used as evidence that R osewater knows he is insane.

  • galen150

This could be real fun. Throw in some x cost burn spells and walking ballista as mana sinks and plenty of strong agro and just pump out tons of damage

  • ConDucktor Whirl Crate God

    Nehebs work hand in hand.

  • Desthian

    Excuse me what?

  • jaya

Aside from aggravated assault I dont see how this can go off.

    • Jonathan Reynolds

Really, this doesn’t have to go infinite to be crazy. You only need to do enough damage to kill your opponents, and getting extra mana really helps with that. But what most excites me is the multiplayer potential in commander. Utilizing cards that do damage to each opponent and then X cost damage spells, this could easily kill a table in one or two rounds like Purphoros.

      • TogetherAlone

Oh Yeah, finish them up with comet storm or fall of the titans with pyromancers goggles.

        • Jordan

          Pyrohemia

      • Jordan

        Pyrohemia baby.

    • Happy The Cat

well, the turn after you cast him, Bolt, spike, attack, m2 add at least 9 mana to your mana pool, cast Dragonstorm three count. fetch any three dragons. Akoum Hellkite wouldn’t suck, Knollspine Dragon to reload your hand, Skyline Despot,Tyrant’s Familiar, Hellkite Charger, anything that would just beat them down harder.

  • Jordan

I’m actually interested in that we get a 6 toughness red creature that’s not a dragon. And some red ramp, albeit late game.

    • TheAdventurer

That last push for the glorious end.

  • Chaospyke

Kinda hate it doesn’t fit in my minotaur tribal tiny leaders, but a fun card none the less.
Jund is getting a good bit of love thus far.

  • Aurore

When you turn into a zombie and stop being black.

  • Blahblahblahbla

This is going to get absurd in EDH. -_-
    My body is ready.

  • Edward

This card is amazing. The Afflict 3 basically guarantees damage and you get red mana equal to all life your opponents have lost on your turn not just combat damage or damage you have dealt. This will go in any deck that likes to deal a lot of damage quickly like Rakdos Lord Of Riots or any Red aggro deck

    • Hedronal

Well yeah, that’s the entire point of Afflict, on any card. Blocking it isn’t completely blocking it.

      • Happy The Cat

it’s like everything is Rhox, but way more exploitable.

  • Ryū

    Awesome card, awesome art.

  • mrpimp

tbh, i think this is the best card in HOD wizards have come up with

  • That’s the first card I’ve ever seen that references a specific one of your main phases. I like it!

    • Happy The Cat

if you look through older cards it comes up a bit more. Coalition Relic, Altar of Shadows, Blinkmoth Urn, and more recently they made Bounty of the Luxa and Tymna the Weaver.

    • Dave

Also, Conduit of Storms from Eldritch Moon.

    • ymmij X

also bounty of the luxa from the last set

    • eltratzo

It is rare, yes. but not because wizards hesitates doing it (beyond it adding a bit of complexity). it simply isn’t relevant all that often. either the card acts at the start of your turn, then they usually put upkeep, end of turn, or combat. if it isn’t one of those the effect itself tends to make clear where it wants to be used optimally.
the only effect that tends to have its main phase specified are triggered mana abilities. because you generally want to to give the player mana where they can use all of their cards(exceptions, as nearly always, exist) and you don’t want them to have that mana twice per turn.

and there is a very limited amount of those kinds of effects around.

  • Happy The Cat

lava spike is now also a red Dark Rit. oh boy this is gonna be a fun card to tinker with. and since there are a lot of equipment that can make him really annoying to fight, sword of vengeance, Loxodon Warhammer, the Swords. too bad he cant hold a Mage Slayer if he’s your commander. but most of his value will be coming from him just sitting there, being a 5 mana mega dork.

glad this guy stopped being a tribal scrub, but rakdos minotaurs and grix zombies will love this.

    • Marvin Sürig

I play him in his black/red EDH commander because I guess I’d totally love the expression of my opponents when I hit them hard and putting the mono red onto the battlefield with Didgeridoo. Then I put a lot of cards into play and maybe I play some wheel to refill the hand.

  • Robert FakeLastName

    Afflict +trample is rude af.

    • Happy The Cat

not quite sure about that, I’d put Deathtouch and the Swords(or other “when deals combat damage to an opponent” effects) over trample. adding Trample to Afflict basically just turns it into Rampage.

      • Robert FakeLastName

except that rampage doesn’t guarantee the extra damage. afflict is a better rampage and they both get better with trample tacked on.

        • Happy The Cat

just remembered that I’m dumb and meant Bushido, but the point still stands, Afflict makes target player lose x no matter what, netting more damage, and like what I said to Hedronal Afflict inherently has a value for making a player not willing to block you, but doing so would still deny damage, but with trample it is no longer a question of denying damage because they no longer can, effectively giving you less control of the game. adding “when deals combat damage to an opponent” effects to him increases the value of blocking him, making the argument 3 life and a creature vs 4+ life and whatever making them decide how much value do they put into their creatures.

it could also be that, since I enjoy in-game politics like a rich fat old white man, having the option to make an opponent go through a difficult decision seems much more powerful than basically removing that decision entirely. realistically I’m probably very rarely going to attack with this, since the value I want from it will come from his mana more than his 4/6 with afflict, and after a stint as his own commander he’s going in my Wheel of Torture deck with a wide rotating cast of urb generals that heavily features wheel effects comboed with the likes of Spiteful Visions and Underworld Dreams. when Wheel of fortune reads “1R: each player reloads, then during your post combat main phase add 7 red mana to your mana pool for each opponent” that’ll be why I run him.

          • Robert FakeLastName

I still cannot agree with your comment about bushido. that is just a worse rampage… to me it is more closely related to double strike but w/e i guess..

          • Happy The Cat

well, Bushido triggers whenever the creature blocks or gets blocked, while Rampage only buffs each creature blocking beyond the first, so I’d rather have Bushido 2 over Rampage 2.

      • Hedronal

“when deals combat damage to an opponent” wouldn’t trigger on afflict though.

        • Happy The Cat

yes, but it forces them to decide if they are willing to take the Afflict and have their creature die, or let you have the effect. it’s like a punisher effect, like this guy with deathtouch becomes “deal 4 damage to target player unless the pay 3 life and destroy a creature they control” what this means is you can lean on just how much you want to force them to block or not, Afflict inherently has a value for making a player not willing to block you, but doing so would still deny damage, but with trample it is no longer a question of denying damage because they no longer can, effectively giving you less control of the game.

  • Kahai

    Love him! :D

  • Happy The Cat

just noticed something flavorful about this card. Afflict 3 is him throwing his Searing Spear at the opponent.

    • Kahai

Too bad they didn’t give it new art for the archenemy reprint. :(

      • Happy The Cat

I think it’s implied Chandra is throwing that one.

  • kmk888

He certainly is powerful enough for constructed. Generating 3+ mana each turn attached to an efficient, evasive body is very good. I just don’t know what type of shell he would fit in that plays semi-aggressively and wants mono-red ramp.

    • Happy The Cat

grix or nono-white mid/late control featuring the newest gods, -1/-1 counter combos and soul scar mage? top it off with cycling shenanigans and red ‘n blacks plethora of AoE removal that would this alive most of the time?

  • Jude

uhm…there’s possibility this could be used elsewhere but totally want this to be a mono red commander to burn, burn somemore, attack, burn some MORE and go into infinite attack loops. just aggro the hell out of the everything, go voltron to go bigger, use red craziness to just keep whacking things. or use it in heartless to say, you all lost half your life totals, i have more mana than god. Pray f or your soul as i play commune with lava and do some stupid stuff

    • Happy The Cat

well, my plan after toying with him in his own deck is to toss him into my grix Bear Hug deck, where having him out and casting Wheel over my Spiteful Visions or Underworld Dreams will give me 21 red mana after combat in a four player game, then we break out the shenanigans.

  • mrpimp

The mana ramp… I could see this going well with sorin markov’s second ability

  • TheAdventurer

Question: Can this card and Neheb, the Worthy be on the field at the same time? They’re both Legendary creatures, but they have different names and creature types.

    • Omeneon

They can both be on the field at the same time. Take the example of the two Akromas (white one and red one), both have the same beginning part of the name, but are two different legendary creatures, thus both can be on the field at the same time. Both creatures must have the same name exactly for the legend rule to apply.

      • TheAdventurer

Oh man – perfect. Thank you! Battle Cattle, roll out!

  • DJ Pad

As with any minotaur…does this make didgeridoo playable in any way? Popping him out on turn 2 (or 1) would be spicy, but low impact compared to griselbrand I suppose.

    • Jonathan Reynolds

Heh. Didgeridoo is now the most valuable card in Homelands.

      • Happy The Cat

meh, i think Baron and that fetch scroll will keep ahead. we’ll need a few more playable Minotaurs for it to jump that high

    • Chris

It makes boros reckoner more of a must in Minotaur decks.

  • Vizzerdrix

I’m slightly interested in trying this in Gisela and to a lesser extent in Saskia. Gisela can easily use some red mana into something big and scary. Saskia at least with my lists could dish out more damage but just red doesn’t help as much

  • Philip Tan

This + Heartless Hidetsugu + Earthquake

    Everyone dies lol XD

    • Giby86 .

Protip? Add lifelink to Hidetsugu and everyone dies except you.

  • TheAdventurer

    Neheb, the Worthy
    Felhide Petrifier
    Rageblood Shaman
    Kragma Warcaller
    Neheb, the Eternal

+5/+1 Minotaurs with Haste, First Strike, Death Touch, and Trample feeding this guy . . . though it may not matter after they run over your opponent.

  • mehngo

This card was literally made for Rakdos, Lord of Riots.

    • QR005

maybe also a perfect card to go in grezo (2nd) edh?

      • mehngo

It’s still very good for Grezo, but not quite perfect as it is for Rakdos. Rakdos only cares about opponents losing life in any way, and Afflict in combat almost ensures that. In Grezo, it’s not nearly as reliable because for his ability to trigger, they have to have taken combat damage, and Neheb can only do that if they leave him unblocked. Still a good card for the deck though, for sure.

  • Ziembski

Just add Repercussion and any Xburn spell for each player and creature, like Rolling Earthquake and see them gains.

  • Ziembski

It is possible to goldfish Eldrazi titan at first turn in EDH.
    Hand:
Mountain, Seething Song, Rite of Flame, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Eldrazi Titan and Flame Rift.

Play Mountain, Mana crypt, tap crypt into sol ring. Now u got 1R and 3C. Play Seething Song and Rite of Flame. Now it is 7R. Cast Neheb and Flame Rift. At postcombat You get 12 mana and can cast Titan.

    Welp.
