+2: Scry 2

0: Look at the top card of your library. If it’s a land card or a creature card with converted mana cost less than or equal to the number of loyalty counters on Nissa, Steward of Elements, you may put that card onto the battlefield.

-6: Untap up to two target lands you control. They become 5/5 Elemental creatures with flying and haste until end of turn. They’re still lands.

  • Samuel Partin

    Wow….this card….

  • Writerofthings

    love it

  • Desthian

    God in heaven

  • Kahai

Thanks for staying in my favor tri color: GUR

  • Anonymous

At least, it can be a 3 mana scry engine

At most, it can be a high matinence creature engine.

  • E.

Is it just me or is her ultimate a bit meh?

    • Kahai

She creates 10/10 worth evasion hasted creatures. If that can’t win you games…

      • E.

Enh, it’s only for the one turn and if your opponent has any flyers/reachers they can chump block that

        • DJ Pad

Which is why you probably don’t activate it if they do, you just 0 it to value town.

If your opponent isn’t attacking you or your planeswalkers with their flyers, but keeping them back to block, then you’re probably already winning.

      • Alex

Not to mention you can just invest 8 mana to get that effect.

        • Kahai

Correct, late game this card is insane.

    • eltratzo

if taken only as her ultimate, yes. combined with her colours her + and her cost it means she is one of the better planeswalkers to actually get there quickly

  • Happy The Cat

simultaneously one of the stronger pws of late and one of the weakest. the +2 is awful and the 0 is an effect we’ve seen before and we know how often it wiffs. but that ult is terrifying and completly viable for her to use. costing x makes her always viable after turn 3.

    • Kahai

Once you hit 8 mana, games are going to end quick! XD

    • DJ Pad

It’s not going to wiff if you build your deck right…It finds land AND creatures. Getting this out on turn 3 against control and they’re going to be in big trouble in a hurry. A bit weak to aggro as it can’t consistently protect itself .

Ultimate is a bit weak, but likely pretty easy to reach and can win some games out of nowhere.

    • DJ Pad

Also, the 0 won’t wiff almost ever given it’s interplay with the +2. You simply scry stuff that you can put into play the next turn.

      • Happy The Cat

what will happen is she scrys, then eats three damage, making it so you cant flip anything but lands. she is very much a win more card, literally the only deck she can just be played against is a non black, non red, non white control and decks with no board presence, which ug control tends to have.

    • God Enel

Scrying 2 every turn is amazing dude, are you drunk? And it sets up the zero ability as well, you’re heavily underestimating this card.

      • Happy The Cat

she can’t defend herself whatsoever, so scry 2 does nothing if you dont have board.
More power to you if you love this card. but outside of her ult and her getting unrealistically high for a long time so her 0 can keep flipping cards she wont do much, cause decks tend to have these things called creatures, which will do a very good job of killing her.

        • God Enel

Considering her zero ability your deck should be built to have board, if it doesn’t you’re either doing something wrong or the board was wiped, in which case you can play her without opposition.

          • Happy The Cat

then you already have board! meaning you DON’T need her! do you not understand what you are saying!? did Luffy break your brain that hard?!

          • God Enel

Of course you need her, the more board presense you have the more likely you are to win, and Nissa gives you card advantage pretty much every turn for free, which is ensurance against possible board wipes.

  • Ryan Cameron

How rather interesting, not what I expected.

  • fullbuster

I really don’t like the art on this one D: her arms seem… off, somehow.
I think her abilities make up for it! The lack of a real “ultimate” is strange, but her +0 can be powerful! Needless to say, scry 2 on a +2 ability is very nice!

    • Hedronal

What gets me about the art is how much of her name text is covered (meaning that more than a tiny bit is obscured).

  • Imalwaysangry

Love the entire set’s diversity so far as late game and early game value

  • Liam Maiher

Another nissa? Why couldn’t this have been a new pw? This is getting dull and boring.

    • Kahai

Soemthing something gatewatch something something Kiora is dead because WotC hates everyone who isn’t Gatewatch friendly something something

      • eltratzo

something something wizards has promised change but cycle length means pulling back on gatewatch only takes effect in HoD.

        • Kahai

I don’t care about seeing Nissa. I care about Kiora being pushed out as our UG walker. I love this card, but if it means there will be less of Kiora in total, i’m sad.

Now if Nissa becomes the ‘i change colors per plane’ walker, that would be amazing!

          • eltratzo

but it doesn’t necessairily mean that. kiora being here would have been unlikely in any case. this is a desert and bolas plane and was from the begining designed with gatewatch focus. and from here on out there will be less gatewatch and more new and old walkers. so more chances for kiora.

the ultimate is also something kiora just doesn’t do so as a kiora this whole card would have been different

          • Kahai

I never meant i wanted to see Kiora in this plane. But having Nissa now use blue does put a hamper on where Kiora fits in. But like i added, if Nissa becomes this flavor of the week, changing mana colors per plane, that would be amazing to see.

          • eltratzo

I don’t expect nissa to remain blue.and I expect her to get fewer printings in general.

          • Kahai

I just said i don’t expect her to stay blue either, but that’s only if she adapts to each plane accordingly.

          • eltratzo

My arguing was initially against you accusing wizards of a stance they don’t hold anymore and after that trying to adress your concerns regarding this impacting kiora.

          • Kahai

You and i are reading different comments than, i don’t see anywhere in your comments where you acknowledge that idea. But whatever, i understand WotC production cycles fine, i’ve simply always been opposed to the Gatewatch and the 2 set block structure, they should have anticipated the pushback from the lack of a core set, but due to how they changed the block structure, it likely also impacted responsiveness in how they can address issues.

          • eltratzo

Yeah they probably changed too many things at once, hampering their ability to adress problems esulting from each problem at the same time (for example the structurecange also means rosewater does less things personally and delegates half Big Set leads and colourwheel competences to other designers. similer changes are propably in ather parts of wotc).
as to the nissa thing we both replied to fishman at nearly the same time. our reasoning is slightly different but the conclusion that the plane shapes her alignment stays the same. so I assumed that to be sufficient in my agreement to that line of thought. That I by the way really like.

          • Kahai

^_^ okaydokay, sorry for the unfriendliness, i just woke up. XD Awake me likes you. :3

          • eltratzo

            no problem ^^

          • Hedronal

Ajani isn’t likely to push Nahiri out of RW (if that’s her reliable color pair), I figure it’s going to be about the same here.

          • Kahai

I only hope my theory that Nissa will adapt to new planes becomes a thing, because i’d love that. :3

          • Hedronal

If so, I hope not just Nissa, even if more her than others.

          • Writerofthings

Yeah I love Kiora. I like Nissa too, but I wish this would have been Kiora. I am still running this in my Abzan CoCo deck. Yes she’s blue, but we run x4 Birds of Paradise and x3 Noble Hierarch so…

      • Liam Maiher

This could have easily been a new pw we have never seen before. But no we need a 6th nissa..

        • Hedronal

The best part is that four Nissas will be in standard at once, after this is the seventh Nissa.

    • Random Guy

Are you joking? Green blue x-cost nissa isn’t unique enough? Look at liliana amd gideon too, super unique.

      • Liam Maiher

I like the ability. Just wish it was a new character

    • Will

      Gatewatch =Bongwater Brigade :(

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Herm wut? Nissa, what are you doing? Go home, you’re drunk.

  • Ankulay Poulay

is this your way to make me play blue WotC…?

  • Jordan Keltner

I’ll go ahead and say it… Another Gatewalker… really?

Other than that, I think I love this card! GU is fun to play and there are great supporting cards from the Kaladesh block for a strategy this fits in. Is she game breaking? No. But this plus Rashmi equals craziness in the best way.

    • NC

WotC didn’t realize people would be THIS sick of printed ‘watch cards (somehow) and didn’t figure it out until Amonkhet was basically finished.

Maro sez from HoD onward the story won’t change, but the number of printed Gatewatch walker cards will decrease.

      • Kahai

It’s like we were fine with the big five ever core set, but loved the new planeswalkers introduced in expansion sets…

  • KrakenHunter

I love how you can pay X. Her ult isn’t too good but that 0 is amazing.

    • Writerofthings

Her ult is a decent finisher. His 0 and +2 are amazing.

  • Random Guy

Just me or is 1GB “When ~ ETBs and at upkeep play the top card of your library (but not griselbrand)” modern-playable?

  • Kevin Wickland

nice synergy between her +2 and 0 in a control shell, you can dig for your finisher and hide them two down for a turn or two until her x is high enough to free cast it

  • Fishman

Why’s Nissa blue? She’s an elf that cares about lands. WHY.

    • eltratzo

because we are on a plane where vegitation and life is very closely liked to water. specifically the luxa (NotNile)

      • Random Guy

Blue != water. Green != nature. Blue = focus on technology/prosperity, green = preserving the world as it is. The fact that those are artistically tied to water/nature does not make water/naure what they’re about. If Nisssa becomes blue it will be because of a change in philosophy.

        • eltratzo

that is the case yes. however blue is also a focus on water. blue gets away with a lot of stuff not really in its colourpie because it is tied into water. the leviathans are a good example fo that. as is that fish from commander that creates successively bigger tokens.

So usually yes a shift in colour indicates shift in philosophy. here however we are dealing wth a walker that has the closest bond to nature and mana of all that we know. so it stands to reason that that specific planeswalker could change its colour based on the geographical and manawise situation of the plane. maybe that change would then in turn influence her phliosophy while on said plane? that question however will have to be answered by the storywriters.

        • Kahai

Nissa is very much becoming the Elemental ‘walker, which means she would be adapt at all colors of mana, because Elementals are not restricted by color in any way (except in colorless).

So ultimately, if the Luxa is such a powerful leyline that when Nissa shows up, she is compelled to adapt to connect closer with the plane, she obviously does.

        • bonogringo

          Fake news!!
Blue is control, as controling tides, waves, energy flow, knowledge. Technology as nothing to do with it you are on izzet mage philosophy here.
Blue green as mostly been associated with tempo, growing over time, snowballzy effects.
This is totally the X costing in it. The blue is mostly the scry as for knowledge. The 0 for the green part and the -6 is a good mix of the two.
As to know the reason she got blue we will know for sure on the story that will arrive but i’ll stand on eltratzo thought. In a desert plane green is closer to blue than in any other landscape.

          • Random Guy

Technology isn’t inherently blue but it tends to fit into the blue philosophy of “knowledge and perfectionism will make everything better”. Blue is basically about “increasing GDP” while the other colors are focused on “social goals” (or in the case of Black not-so-social goals).

        • Hedronal

Leaving other reasonings aside: Blue’s land type is literally island, a land surrounded by water. Green is forest, literally made of nature.

          • Random Guy

Yes, it’s artistically represented by water. I just said that.

          • Hedronal

And it’s not just artistic, it’s also literal. Sea creatures are almost always blue, but they aren’t focusing on technology or prosperity.

    • Kahai

My theory is that she’s getting in touch with one of the strong mana sources on this plane, in this case the Luxa is a very strong blue source.

If she adapts to each plane, id est, if she changed colors depending on the plane, to harness the most power mana, i’d love to see rainbow Nissa’s.

  • Jordan

So no Chandra? Or next set you think? With this many walkers, for sure no Bolas in this set.

    • eltratzo

possibly no chandra at all. starting HoD they are pulling back on the watch as far as printed cards are concerned. production cycle being what it is means they coudn’t do so earlier.

      • Jordan

So red dies a little more.

        • eltratzo

or rather one of their mythics isn’t regularily taken up by a planeswalker with a questionable track record of playability. less chandras has no bearing on the strength of red. the strength of the red cards that ARE printed has.

          • Jordan

you’re referring to the power level of red in a set. I’m referring to red as a color, not being equal to the other colors, getting bad cards (1 card is hyped, rest are, well, junk or near junk). Red’s identity not changing while other colors are adapting to the new design of bigger creatures while also becoming cheaper. Red’s removal not being big enough to handle things, while also slowing down to sorcery speed. Being shoe-horned into the same small red aggro set after set. Things like this.

          • eltratzo

part of the powerlel thing is because they are trying to find new things for red to do. they powered down removal a bit (that might change again down the line) so they could try new things with red. the pseudocarddraw being one of those things. the landtapping since destruction is a nono is another such thing. they are working on that very problem of red being in a very small space designwise. not always very good admittedly but there are noticable signs of them searching a solution.

          • Jordan

Yes, and they are taking years to do it. Except now, pseudo-hellbent seems to be the thing. And that’s not going to work because it goes against everything you want to do in this game. You want more resources, not less. They’ve had multiple instances of red doing things that would be amazing. Things like Eidolon of the great revel, blood moon, other cards that disrupt and keep you from playing a fair game. Red has potential, but again, we keep coming back to small aggro in a format where other creatures are becoming better and bigger for cheaper. Red needs to be like blue in that it’s disruptive, but instead of winning through combo or control, it can win with bigger, efficient creatures

          • eltratzo

I’d say to tell your complains( and I do realise that there are legitimate reason for them) to shawn main as he is the watcher of the red part of the colourpie. but since he stopped working two weeks ago to go to riot that wouldn’t really work. there is a new person on that post but at least the next year will be purely shawn.

          • Jacob Bachand

All valid points, and as a blue mage, I feel your pain. Remember when blue had better card advantage then say, green lol

          • Jordan

            Pepperidge Farm Remembers :)

          • Thomas Luffman

            #GreenIsTheNewBlue

        • Random Guy

What would chandra do in amonkhet?

          • eltratzo

go there to kill bolas, like everyone else is, presumably.

        • Tolle

You say that like she didn’t just get a really good printing last block where Jace, Gideon, and Nissa didn’t get a card.

          • Christopher Williams

            Vital force

          • Tolle

Okay. I did forget about that one. Fair enough. Point still stands with Gideon and Jace though.

          • Christopher Williams

It’s a good point. I want a new Jace but I’m sure that’s in the next set.

    • Avacyn Angel of Hope

Why would chandra be printed this set? Most likley jace and bolas next set

      • Jordan

So all of the gatewatch except chandra? I would not be surprised.

        • Hedronal

Also not Ajani, but he’s not there at all.

          • Jordan

There’s no Bolas in this set either. He’s off plane right now.

          • Hedronal

Yes but Bolas is basically the opposite of the Gatewatch.

          • Jordan

Ok? Not sure where you’re going with that one.

          • Hedronal

“So all of the gatewatch except chandra?” “Also not Ajani”

Ajani is in the gatewatch now too. Get the convo now?

          • Jordan

Im talking about the Bolas comment. I was hoping for a set of Anti-Gatewatch that Bolas put together.

          • Hedronal

He’s ambitious and selfish, and an inter-planar threat, so I stand by my statement, as that’s what the Gatewatch was built to fight. He may try to rule a team or something though.

          • Thomas Luffman

Don’t we already have the Infinite Consortium?

          • Hedronal

I’m pretty sure that’s mostly gone, and either way it hasn’t been mentioned in the story in the present tense in years.

      • Curt Vandruff

Bolas walker this set cause we need the bolas god next set

        • Kahai

Current storytelling has Bolas showing up after the first four hours. During the HoD.

  • Declan Macewan

    Top two card…. Card…

  • Ryan Cameron

I will be wanting this card for sure.

  • Soren Szilver

THIS is a very interesting idea for a planeswealker. I want more like it!

  • Rœkja

Yay, more G/U that isn’t +1/+1 counters. Don’t get me wrong, I love traditional Simic, but variety is great.

  • Ryū

Finally, another simic walker, and she’s actually interesting. I may even toss her into my Ezuri commander deck. First planeswalker in a while that I’ve actually wanted to have.

    • SirCancelot

I wanted to say, that Ezuri is mono-green, but then there is the other one too :D

      • Ryū

Yes, U/G Ezuri of Phyrexistan is my commander.

  • Typhuzuzu13

Three mana for a planeswalker with three loyalty counters, scy 2? Yes please!

    • Scathain

You misread the card, 3 mana will get you a planeswalker with 1 loyalty counter.

      • Chromasticore

And then you use the first ability, and it becomes 3 loyalty

        • Typhuzuzu13

Tada! My only question is what deck she beongs in… simic control? Haven’t heard those words in forever.

          • Typhuzuzu13

Cheap creatures Using her ability, then you use the free mana for counters?

          • MTG fan

Or you could like mana ramp a lot with mana nerds to get to Nissa’s ultimate by like turn 5 or something like that.

          • Tolle

My thoughts were that UG elf from kaladash. She cares about what is on top of your library.

      • MTG fan

Scry is a plus 2 so it techniquely does, but it does only come in with one.

      • Connor Bowen

Yes, but as soon as you plus it’s 3 loyalty

  • NC

    I want lots.

  • SirCancelot

Maybe crazy good in a UG tron shell in modern? Can dig for tron pieces, cheat them into play or is an lategame bomb!

  • Transgendent

Everyone else: Boo hoo it’s Nissa I hate the gatewatch.
Me: Nissa’s my favorite walker give me mooooreee

    • Hedronal

      Ditto me about Ajani.

    • Zombie

I still hate that it’s a Nissa, card, but the UG and the card itself are pretty sweet. Almost enough to overlook the fact that it’s another frigging Nissa card, literally the most reprinted Planeswalker now (She overtook Jace, which is an incredible feat).

      • She’s tied with Chandra now. Not the most printed, one of the most printed.

Edit: Tied with Jace now, Chandra is the most printed.

        • Zombie

I say have Bolas kill em all so we get new characters either way

  • Nanya

NOT a Super Friends deck card.

The scry is nice at least.

  • Daniel Kaine Allen

My brain cant decide how it feels about this cards

    • Hyorin

      Well, my friend Surrak approves.

  • Пламен Балев

Mediocre walker IMO. Her simic colors is the first drawback – not too many decks can afford to play that, even in modern. Also 0 could be great if she lives after her +2. Theoretically that could happen in modern, just not very often. Personally not impressed by either the new Gideon or new Nissa. Sure they are 3-mana walkers, but their abilities are not that impressive sadly. Gideon personally reminds me of Ajani, Caller of the Pride – overhyped and underpowered walker for just 3 mana.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

Overhyped? We just got her and it’s mixed opinion. That isn’t overhyped.

      • Пламен Балев

Sorry, overhype was concerning primarily Gideon of the Trials. Not her.

        • Daniel Kaine Allen

I could see using her, but then again I’m a filthy casual.

      • Typhuzuzu13

At worst it’s three mana for a damage blocker and a scry

    • MTG420

Did you watch 4 color saheeli win with Tamiyo at GP Barcelona? I think this could make a splash.

  • malignant Phenomena

    whats next an Izzet Jace?

    • Typhuzuzu13

I THInk kaladesh impacted all of them differently. Given his working with the resistance I can see him adopting that sporradic, improvisational attitude. He had to rush to a plane, with little forethought, and is improvising as he goes. That’s unlike his normal plans (ideally).

    • Tolle

Izzet chandra is more likely. I feel like Jace would be either dimir (if stuck to his cards) or azorious (if stuck to his personality)

      • malignant Phenomena

it doesn’t feel like Chandra will get any change or even a card seeing how apparently she feels the most in her ‘element’ in this new plane of Amonkhet… but then again anythings possible

        • Tolle

I doubt we’ll get one of her since we just got one last block. My comment was merely saying if we were to get an izzet gatewatch, unless someone new joins, it’ll likely be Chandra.

          • Hedronal

We also got Nissa last block though, so it’s not necessarily something WotC would avoid. That said, the story wasn’t about Nissa that block.

    • Curt Vandruff

Jace is a useless rogue, so dimir fits, and I don’t see why people find it weird, simic is growth and bounty of life … everything Nissa is (Kiora is the creature side, Nissa is now the nature side)

    • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

      I wish Couple Cards… 2 PW Name Types …

  • Aubrey Clements

    super freinds?

    • MTGFanatic

      no, power rangers!

    • Kyle Ryker

      No, Jacetice League

  • MTG fan

I want this so badly! I used to have a blue green deck that was really good! This would fit right in!

  • malignant Phenomena

this + the vizier of managerie seems good…

  • What!

I was really thinking Nissa would end up abzhan. Adding blue to her seems really weird to me.

    • Ryan Cameron

Not really with the presence of the Luxa I feel.

    • Curt Vandruff

abzan? really? White feels off for her, and black is the polar opposite to her (it would be like making Chandra jeskai)

Given how temur is the definitive color combo for nature, and red isn’t her style. Also simic is growth, simic is Nissa

    • Hedronal

What about Nissa fits black mana, or white either really? Blue gets some elemental emphasis at least, and water is the source of life on Amonkhet.

  • D-Man

Going straight into my std superfriends and my edh superfriends, early game it’s very nice, that +2 scry is super awesome, and the late game bomb 8+ mana= 10 dmg to the face, now let’s talk about that 0 ability, being able to scry your cards on the turn she comes in makes sure that your zero ability hits a viable target on the second turn she’s in play. With all the great G & U cards in the set she should see some play

  • Aurore

I gotta say, that ultimate is pretty underwhelming.

    • warslinger

I think that’s the point. all the abilities are pretty good but the 0 ability is the real kicker

      • Julna Buras

But still, keep in mind that those land creatures now have FLYING as well as haste. That makes it a lot easier to dodge the opponent’s creatures.

        • Hedronal

Also simple size, they eat most flying blockers.

    • Kyle Kinnear

Think about late game, where both players are topdecking. This could just end the game, dealing 10 damage out of nowhere.

  • Kaiser

You are real? XD why? well this is good for one reason: LOOK GUYS NOT JACE THIS TIME!!! -for the moment-

  • Dr. Burn Crow

At first I didn’t think I liked this, but the more I look at this, the more it grows on me. I could conceivably run the hell out of this.

  • Ryan Ulrich

    Edric here she comes

  • Zombie

I can honestly say I did not see this coming in the slightest.

Incredibly good both early and late, and for 8 mana lategame she can just win the game out if nowhere.

The only major downside is the UG color combo, which makes her super narrow.

Temur decks might run her main, and 4 color Saheeli might side her in for grindy matchups like GB.

  • Julna Buras

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAT!?

I didn’t think there’d be another Nissa so soon, and if there was, I thought I’d be very annoyed.

Apparently not. I can’t play her, but hot DANG that is cool.

  • gio

    In love with this Nissa

  • kmk888

Good early, good late, good synergy between the abilities. Gets even better with deck manipulation. You mostly just 0 her over and over, people complaining about the ultimate need to realize it’s a threat you only use when the opponent is at 10 or less life.

This card looks like a house. What’s more, it actually looks fun to play with and against. I applaud this printing.

    • Brian Schmidt

      but it doesn’t protect itself.

      • kmk888

That’s a deckbuilding price you pay. You either play it with big creatures that can block for her, wait to play her until you can cast her for a very high x cost, or only use her against decks that cannot adequately pressure her.

      • jane smithers

You mean she isn’t 100% broken….Oh the tragedy

        • Shagoth

Also means that you can have any effect you want for a turn stapled to a fog.

      • De’Elgathor

The 0 can put creatures onto the battlefield. The +2 sets up the 0. You are playing in green and blue, prime colors for protecting things with both creatures and spells.

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

Playing for for 3 and using her plus 2 puts her at 3, if she gets to +2 again, it’s already enough value to justify playing her in a lot of cases.

  • Brian Schmidt

Too bad you couldn’t cast the card without paying it’s CMC. But I am just nitpicking here. But does this mean we won’t be seeing Bolas in this set? I would be severely disappointed. There is that one card in Revolt that says search for a Bolas card and even though it would be in Standard at the same time, it would be like the think it’s too powerful of a card…I hope.

    • Ryan Ulrich

Bolas is coming in Hour of Devastation when the second sun crests.

      • eltratzo

do we have real confirmation? or is that still based on boosterpack art? (that usually is nearly as good as confirmation but still)

        • Ryan Ulrich

          Follow the magic story

          • eltratzo

especially since gatewatch a walker existing in story doesn’t guarantee a card. I do believe him to be in HoD not only because of story but also because of booster arts. both of that however is not a true confirmation. though it does make it very nearly a certainity

          • Ryan Ulrich

It would be a major tease if they didn’t. However in story they say he’ll return when the second sun crests

          • Hedronal

It’s not fully confirmed, but if Bolas isn’t in Amonkhet block I’d eat a boot.

        • Shawn Michael Diaz

MaRo said 5 walkers total in Amonkhet (not the block just the set) and Nissa is the 5th

          • Jordan Keltner

Nissa is the third. The deck planeswalkers count as outside cards and don’t count toward the set. They are an extension of the set Gideon and liliana. We will see 2 more walkers.

          • Shawn Michael Diaz

Oh, might’ve misunderstood if that’s the case. Still not holding my breath for bolas before HoD

      • jane smithers

I would be shocked sh!*less if he didn’t get a card. I can’t imagine wizards doing that to the players.

    • Purphoros

That’s actually quite good, because the opponent has to stifle nissa’s ability instead of getting a chance to counter the creature with a more common counterspell.

    • schemerboy

      bolas is in HoD

  • Miles Rinesmith

I approve of this Nissa I think she is a versatile Planewalker. She is shitty/decent early game and late like turn 8 and beyond if your opponent is at 10 or less life they better have a counterspell or flyer blockers or they just die.

  • Blahblahblahbla

I’m pretty pumped to whirlwind slam this into my Kruphix EDH deck and get myself a planeswalker with 3,769,245,710,007,148,232,774,007,869,220,643,659,801,009,859,148,006,980 loyalty. :D

    • What!

Better yet, have DOUBLING SEASON in play first! Lololol

    • Vizzerdrix

thats it? not 3,769,245,710,007,148,232,774,007,869,220,643,659,801,009,859,148,006,981? though without animating it and outside of the lolz of a near unkillable through damage pw, i see no point in doing that

      • Blahblahblahbla

Everything I do is for the lols, sir..

        • Vizzerdrix

Then could you for me add worldly tutor and storm crow to the mix?

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Here’s that Simic mana sink I was wondering about

  • Minizem

Don’t mind me, just another Atraxa toy here.

  • Shagoth

Not even going to read what it does, this is doing so many weird things at once it looks fan made.
Simic Nissa, especially after some signs that the pws would stay mono colored, X, (technically speaking) a two mana planeswalker, like what is this monster?
Okay, gonna judge it as a card, first ability is good, second is a commander ability or a really low curve deck, wait it says land, that makes it a lot tougher, and a weak ultimate that should be weak given that you can make her starting loyalty anything. Really solid card, looks like this will be the underrated walker of the set.

    • eltratzo

given that almost everyone on here seems to like her I’m not so sure about “underrated”

      • Shagoth

Everyone likes her and think she’s well designed/fun. Usually, there’s a planeswalker that no one looks at that changes the meta game completely. I can’t see how this one will, but I couldn’t have seen how Liliana, the Last Hope would have or how Nahiri brought control to modern again either.

    • kk

second ability is insane in legacy…

Top , Fetches. Top Again, Brainstorm, Ponder and a Jace…. Even in a deck with 14/16 creatures…. you can set up with consistency creatures or lands into play… Pure card and mana advantage. It´s just bonkers.

      Leovold into play… , etc etc…

  • Necrachilles

Finally a good 2 drop planeswalker (oath of ajani/Gideon)

    • MTG fan

Oath of Ajani doesn’t work, but Gideon’s oath would. You could liliana or any three drop planeswalker with oath of ajani

      • What!

Ajani does work: you declare x as 1 one and “pay” it with ajanis cost reduction.

        • MTG fan

If that’s true, does fireball get 1 cheaper and paid by Goblin Electromancer?
Edit: Thanks. You were right. I’m sorry. I was wrong

          • Joseph Levasseur

            Yes!

          • Necrachilles

That’s why Mizzix is amazing with X spells :D

  • kinYa

    whaat

  • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

    Dddaaaammmmmnnn. Blue green nissa

  • Daniel Kaine Allen

Thank god they didn’t give her a -X ability while they were at it. That could get bonkers in edh

  • Vizzerdrix

second sun bury it 7 cards, pass draw (6) cast oath of nissa (3) cast this nissa, scry 2 (1), pass turn draw second sun and win. not sure its worth playing but you could do it in a pw build

  • Kk

This with Top, brainstorm , ponder, etc is disgusting….

The most powerful planeswalker printed for legacy in a while.. more poerful than dack fayden ( not in vintage).

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

3 mana to scry 2 for as many turns as your opponent doesn’t have answers (at least it dies to lightning bolt/helix at 3 mana). Seems strong for Leovold’s colors.

  • Happy The Cat

so… Atraxa with some infinite mana combos… mixed with some Liquidmetal and other combos to animate her…Fate Transfer…Gideon, Champion of Justice…
okay, guys, I might be gone for a while, I’ve got an insane combo deck to work on that be the best and dumbest thing I’ve ever done.

    • Thomas Luffman

That sounds absolutely hilarious. Please send us a link once this is fine tuned.

  • HighPriest

Oh I need this Nissa in my life! A bit surprised at the colour combo but makes sense with Luxa and all.

  • Deadly Berry

“Darn, this land has more converted mana cost than Nissa- oh well.”

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

Even if they introduced land cards with converted mana costs (pls no wotc), Nissa could play them regardless with the wording. It’s land cards or creature cards w/CMC less than Nissa loyalty not land cards w/CMC less than Nissa loyalty or creature cards w/CMC less than Nissa loyalty.

      • Deadly Berry

I meant loyalty there, not cost; silly me.

  • MrAptronym

Well this is very good. I’m glad to see gatewatch members outside the mono color too… maybe this can open up room for other mono colored walkers?

    • Happy The Cat

I’d rather they stay mono and wizards make new walkers. the watch crew has become tiresome.

      • PrissyRose

MaRo answered a question on tumblr essentially stating that they got the complaint and starting with hour of devestation we will see some range of new pw and not just the gatewatch crew

      • MrAptronym

Well yeah, I’m not a fan. I just want anything that opens up a respite, and I am a bit sick of having each mono color only having one representative character while everyone else gets forced into 2+ colors.

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Is there a flicker spell you can use on planeswalkers in standard? It’d be hilarious to kill this with a flicker effect.

    • Julien Benoit

Felidar Guardian says hello, provided that he doesn’t get banned.

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

That’s only permanents you control so why would you kill your own Nissa?

        • Julien Benoit

damn he saw through our evil plan bois, what’s plan b?

          • Happy The Cat

tell Wizards to reprint Frontline Medic? they seem to want to print good cards only for white green and black and he falls in those.

    • MTG420

      Revolt

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

I can’t imagine a situation where that’s worth it in a constructed deck

        • MTG420

If play Walking for Ballista for 0 just to revolt is a smart play, then anything can happen.

          • Shawn Michael Diaz

At least that play doesn’t cost mana

  • Insight66

Who’ll the mono green planeswalker be, Garruk’s gone black and Freyalise is dead

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

The next mono-green pw will probably be Garruk or Nissa still. I don’t think we’ll find any new native planeswalkers on Bolas’s plane by virtue of it being his synthetic plane but if we did they probably wouldn’t be green because y’know, deserts and stuff.

      • Insight66

        Once you go black, though…
A fresh faced Greenwalker would be refreshing, I think we’ll get one on Aztlan

    • Ryan2626

Just someone NEW would be refreshing. I do like the cards, but seeing new planeswalkers would be a nice change of pace

    • Nharzhool

      SELVALA!

  • Thomas Luffman

I think this Nissa will finally make up for taking away our elfwalker.

  • Bostorket

Nissa finally went to blue school. Noice.

  • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

Honestly, i like the 0 ability better than its -6.

    • eltratzo

well the -6 is what you’ll use if you can win the game with that. 10 hasty flying damage tends to be good at that. when not doing that visiting valutown with the 0 seems like a good plan.

    • Uncertain Title

Indeed! Most of the creatures so far in green cost 4cmc or less, so you’re almost guaranteed to get something out!
      T1: Whatever
      T2: Channler Initiate
T3: Nissa for 4cmc, then Scry to get her to 4 loyalty.
T4: +0 to hit Croc, pay four for another croc, swing for 10 :D

  • mehngo

Gonna love her in Kydele for the obvious synergies.

  • Guest

Not that I dislike this card, but what happened to the selfish xenophobic Nissa who tried black mana and freed the eldrazi?

    • Amber Aurelia Fehl

That version of her was retconned.

      • The Dracogenius

Sadly. Nazi elves are the best.

  • Dewill

WOTC: so this set will not be about jace. This may effect our sales.
Also WOTC: let’s make the elf planeswalker simic colored because we are all religious fanatics for blue and Jace PW’s.

    • Jazzyboy1

They had to have a blue planeswalker anyway, and I don’t even really see what your problem with this is.

      • Dewill

and if i had a problem with it what is it to you?

        • Jazzyboy1

I’m just curious as to what point you’re really trying to make. You might have a perfectly valid point that I might agree with, but I’m just not seeing it right now, so I’d love it if you could elaborate. If you don’t want to, I’m not really bothered though.

  • ConDucktor Whirl Crate God

That’s it…I’m officially naming this set as “Atraxmonkhet”.

    ATRAAAAAAAAAAAAXA!!!! GET THE CAMERA!

    • Cthulhooo

      Overall it’s EDHkhet.

  • Nharzhool

Hrrrnnnggg! My mana-spam deck is gonna love this baby!

  • Lukas Rösch

A planeswalker I can kill with flickerwisp (emeria player) … nice!

  • Benjo Sian

this is the first time seeing a planeswalker with X loyalty in it one of its kind.

  • Jeremy Scott

    Spell Queller “Breathing heavily”

    • De’Elgathor

Only if X is one or zero. Otherwise her cmc is however much you paid for.

      • My hair is made of cats, your

Wrong, her CMC is what is wrote on the card and X is always zero for those effects.

So even if you spent 10 mana to cast her you can still snatch her with Spell Queller since her CMC is 2 due to UG cost.

        • Darren Kyle Vasquez

For the case of determining CMC while she is being cast this would be incorrect.
While on the stack, her X would be calculated in, whether it be 0 or higher.
If I chose 2 for X, while she is on the stack she has a cmc of 4.

After she resolves though, her CMC will become two again.

202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with {X} in
its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the
stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object
          is on the stack.

        • galen150

x is considered to be 0 for cmc whenever it is not on the stack, on the stack its cmc includes the x cost. so for free casting x is considered to be 0 and you cant choose another number for that x

        • De’Elgathor

That’s not how X spells work on the stack. If we were discussing X spells in any other zone, you’d be right. But on the stack, CMC is however much you paid. Check out the rulings on Spell Queller’s own Gatherer page.

  • The Dracogenius

Nice. In a recent Driving to Work Rosewarer said that designing cards purely to show that you can pull something new off is bad if it serves no specific purpouse in the set. I demand an answer for this thing…

    • Uncertain Title

As of right now, there are only 3 green creatures and 3 blue creatures spoiled that cost more than 4. If you cast her T4 and scry, she’ll hit a majority of creatures next turn with her 0. And if you use Channeler Initiate to boost her to 4 cmc on T3, you can suddenly be playing creatures with a collective total of 8 cmc on T4. So while she may not seem to have a specific purpose in terms of abilities, she can help you set up/play most of the guys that do for free.
We’ll have to wait and see what other G/U stuff are spoiled, but I think she serves the set pretty well so far ^ ^

    • Kahai

If you asking why she’s blue: In lore she’s the only planeswalker who communes with the planes she visits. She literally asked Zendikar for the strength to kill the Eldrazi and she got it.

On Kaladesh, she saw that mana can work in ways she’d never seen before and now coming to Amonkhet, with the Luxa being the major leyline (likely the only major leyline in an otherwise dying plane) it wouldn’t be out of style to want to see what using other colors of mana was like. She’s also taken the role of being the planeswalker who specializes in elementals, creatures which come in all colors of mana.

  • Edward Buehrle

Arbor elf + Kiora’s follow, + snap, + cloud faeries, + anything else to untap lands with mana enchants on them.
I’ve already smacked down a 2nd turn 6 loyalty Nissa in my 2nd match I played her.
If you don’t think 10 flying haste damage 2nd turn is ridiculous, you are a fool. Name another walker that can do that.
