Phenax, God of Deception - Born of the Gods Spoiler

Phenax, God of Deception

  • Color: Black, Blue
  • Type: Legendary Enchantment Creature - God
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • Set:

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to blue and black is less than seven, Phenax isn’t a creature.

Creatures you control have “Tap Symbol: Target player puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard, where X is this creature’s toughness.”

  • gaston205

    YES, MILL, HAHAHAHAHA

  • Necro

Here goes the weakest of the BNG Gods… At least he’s limited/EDH/casual playable.

  • Julna Buras

Why do my colors always have to get sucky cards. First Reap Intellect, now this… He’s not the worst I’ve seen, but couldn’t they at least given him the same stats as Erebos?

    • DUX

but….he doesnt get hit gy selesnya charm, ALL the other gods do

      • Julna Buras

        Good Point.

    • Necro

You don’t want to attack with him… you just want to block and EoT mill 7

    • CodyGozRawr

I hope you’re being sarcastic… U/B get some of the most OP cards.

      • Julna Buras

Did you see Reap Intellect, Trait Doctoring, and the other Dimir cards? Except for Nightveil Spectre and possibly Lazav, most of the standard U/B cards have flopped. I guess his seven toughness is pretty good, but really? I’ve only been playing for about a year and a half, so tell me, how often does U/B focus on mill as opposed to other mechanics? (I sincerely would like to know)

    • Zombie

This card is fine. He’s a sideboard option for UB/Esper Control when Jace, Memory Adept eventually cycles out if he’s not in M15.

      • FlannelGuy

Yes, he is an amazing sideboard option for a deck that plays 0 creatures except for elspeth tokens and the occasional Blood Baron

        • Zombie

Just think about that. Roll it around in your head for a second.

Elspeth makes 3 tokens a turn until she ultimates. That means with Phenax on the board, then Elspeth, you can start milling them for 3, then 6, then 9, ultimate, then mill for 27 a turn.

With just the tokens. Phenax doesn’t have to be a creature for his ability to be usable.

          • FlannelGuy

Or you bash face…. And you do 3, then 6, then 9, then oh look they’re dead….

          • Zombie

Or it could be a mirror breaker between control decks where you EoT mill them over and over until Verdict gets blown.

          • FlannelGuy

Or you bash face and win. One requires 1 card (elspeth), the other requires 2 (elspeth and this). So they verdict, you create more and bash face. They can’t mill the turn they enter play cause of summoning sickness lol, so you might as well attack with them.

          • BadWolf

Decks change though. And if you’re too narrow minded to think that the same deck is played for years on end, I suggest you go play YuGiOh

  • MagicGALAXY

    I AM LOV’IN IT!!!

    • gaston205

I know, right, some people just don’t appreciate good mill cards these days!

      • MagicGALAXY

Plus I thought this card was going to be Orazov, but then I realized it looked like the other mill creatures from Theros.

        • guest

how they explained him in the video sounded black/white, It looked like he cared for the humans but only because he wanted to be the one to torture them.

          • MagicGALAXY

Pretty much. I think he could’ve been either. I like him as a UB god; fantastic :)

      • Necro

I had to think about it for three minutes until I finally looked up on how to play him on daily MTG. Doorkeeper Deck is fun now! YAY!

  • Cody Moskalski

i love this thing can you say defender dimir control?

  • Adam Watson

im so tired of blue black being the “lets just give it mill” colors. seriously mill is never viable.

    • Zimmer Remmiz

The fact that it’s “target player” makes it a bit better, has some decent self mill potential…

  • Tank Johnson

Eh… disappointed. Maybe with consuming aberration? Nope, don’t like.

    • MagicGALAXY

I don’t expect you to like it. I expect you. . .TO LOVE IT.

  • Mike Thomas

The thing that bothers me the most about this card is its not black. Hell, blue-white would fit it better, because of the toughness. It just seems like a blue card. Otherwise, its a blue-black card that can’t be used in blue-black decks.

Here’s hoping the blue mythic will bring in good news.

    • Aaron Seet

Unfortunately our ten mythics have already been revealed 5 gods, Kiora, Champion of Stray souls, Flame-Wreathed Phoenix, and Chromanticore and Brimaz so the blue mythic goes in next set I’m afraid

  • MagicGALAXY

Wait a second. . .WAIT A FREAKING SECOND.

IS WITH NIGHTVEIL SPECTER IS 6 DEVOTION????????????????????????

NIGHTVEIL IS NOW $10 OMG Dx

    • Mike Thomas

I’ve already explained that devotion doesn’t work like that. Nightveil spector adds only 3 devotion to blue and black, not 6. Wizards answered this in detail if you want to look into it.

      • MagicGALAXY

        Awwwwww :(

Be I wants that to happen!!!

MILL NEEDS TO BE APPRECIATED AGAIN!!!

        • Dr. Storm Crow

I agree. And I need this.

          • MagicGALAXY

Strom Crow needs this. . .

          • Dr. Storm Crow

            STORM CROW UPDATE UNLOCKED!

          • MagicGALAXY

            ACHIEVEMENT: STORM CROW
-Win your favor from Storm Crow under his army.

          • Dr. Storm Crow

I’m Dr. Storm Crow, and I approve this message.

        • Brigandinewaltz

Again? Mill was never appreciated in the first place.

          • MagicGALAXY

So why did people play mill in any place? 0.o

    • party pooper

The multicolored cards like reckoner and specter only count as three to either of the two colors.

      • MagicGALAXY

Yah, but I found it interesting how simple $1-$2 dollar cards have become more expensive :(

        • Anthony Bartolomey

That’s cause it’s used in the two most popular decks right now and available for other decks.

          • MagicGALAXY

            Yep.

    • Zombie

Nightveil Specter’s actually been 10-15 dollars for a while now.

It’s invaluable to Mono Blue and Mono Black Devotion, and it’s one of the stronger cards in the best deck in the format, Mono Black Devotion.

But, no, it only provides 3 Devotion at a time, but it provides the 3 blue and 3 black seperately for say Thassa and Erebos.

With Phenax, it only counts as 3, you basically pick one you want to add to your Devotion total.

  • Treyjee

i love this with wall of frosts, nightveil specters, hoverbarriers, erebos, and D Demons.

    • MagicGALAXY

In 2 turns with all this on the field, you mill your opponent completely.

  • Dr. Storm Crow

All I want for my birthday is this and an electric shaver.

  • guest

this is actually the third best god in this set. If you build around him you should have high defence creatures that stay on the field for a while which activates his devotion more easily.

    • Mike Thomas

And that’s the big problem: “Build around him”. Sure, if you get him out with high toughness creatures, it’ll be scary quick. But if your relying on him for your deck, your asking for a slaughter games to remove it. If you attempt to optimize by adding more mill, then you have either lost control or creatures to help you survive late-game.

      • guest

when i said build around him i ment just mill, because many creatures from ravnica that did mill have higher toughness than attack

      • CorvusV

Doorkeeper and defenders. End of story, Phenax becomes amazing

        • FlannelGuy

And then they kill you with Fanatic of Mogis or Grey Merchant, or you get blown out by supreme verdict. And then Phenax becomes (or should I say remains) horrible.

          • Juanito Jones

The format still have counterspells bro, and we can handle some verdicts

          • FlannelGuy

Cause counterspells work so well with Thoughtseize and Duress.

          • Juanito Jones

We’re talking about a UB deck, who can use this cards to. The format change when a new set come, some decks disapear because they stop to be viable, you are right in any aspects but not when you say “this card is horrible” cause a card like this have a lot of potencial hidden. To be sure, i don’t belive that this deck will be popular, when we play competitive we wanna be sure about our choose and we prefer the classic strategys(aggro, control and midrange) but this card can be very strong in the right place for him. I like the Phenax a lot, more than the another multicolored Gods(expet Mogis), i will sleeve up some Jaces and Doorkeepers to play with this Guy and have the nostalgia of the good times when mill was strong :)

  • Sakashima the Impostor

This is the most bitterly disappointed I have been towards a new card for a long time… In some instances, it’s a cheap cop-out to give U/B mill cards like this; it
almost feels like they’re just not trying in some cases. Sure, Phenax
works with some Inspiration, but in the end, he just feels like he was
hastily thrown together. “We can’t think of anything better, so let’s just make him mill.” He’s simply uncreative to me.

    • Bennyboy

Which is why I’m glad you don’t design cards……

      • Ben

I agree with Sakashima- the blue black god mills really well. Whoop-de-doo. Who would have guessed? I was honestly waiting for something interesting, like some form of card advantage or something a little bit more control-y or new than classic “top x cards.” At the very least, they could have used the “until X lands are revealed clause” to give mill a little more clout. As it is right now, mill still isn’t good. This god will do little or nothing to change that.

        • Julna Buras

Finally someone who can put my feelings into words. Thanks Ben and Sakashima.

  • Name

I’m just waiting for them to reveal an Inspired creature that mills when it untaps. If that happens, I might actually try to build a mill deck.

  • Chi Sarades

im deck out everyone with this

  • murph

So let me get this straight. Some of you are disappointed because you find the card unimaginative because he plays an obvious strategy as opposed to other gods who apparently don’t follow said trends, ( Xenegos who’s a RG card who boosts P/T at the beginning of their attack, a predictable RG strategy). Some of you are pissed because you think the card is unusable. But it’s a 4/7 for five who gives creatures a mill ability based on their toughness, which by the way is a staple UB ability, and it turns any deck into a possible milling god deck. Maybe it’s just my opinion, but don’t you think you’re whining over something that has a decent ability that doesn’t complicate your deck straegy too much and works well for defensive play styles?

    • BadWolf

Obviously, stupid runs rampant in the comments. I could see this in competitive play. But you know how narrow minded people can be. The only good decks are control and aggro, Gods forbid that mill be viable. They’re probably just sniveling because they’re going to get train wrecked by this on kitchen table.

  • Juanito Jones

This card it’s like a gift to me, i have a standard U/B mill deck using only removals, dimir buycard spells, defenders and Gatekeeper, this card will be ultra awesome because he turn my every creature in a mega Gatekeeper. Am really satisfied

  • Dimitrije Simic

bad, but might work as a win-con in U/B control??

  • CodyGozRawr

This is so OP, I don’t even want to play anymore… Even if you’re not running a mill deck, you can use this to tap your creatures with inspiration, without having to attack with them. Consuming Abberation + this = win.

    • justmanypeaches

Why do people always seem to overreact to cards. It’s not OP

    • Ben

I’m pretty sure I just saw “mill” and “OP” in the same post. Explain.

    • FlannelGuy

Consuming abberation has always been a bad card, and this doesn’t change it. The problems with those cards is that they’re too slow. I can 100% guarantee you that this isn’t going to break the format, or come even close. Heck, even in kitchen table Magic this card would be bad.

  • guest

this plus prophet of kruphix equals double the amount of milled cards

  • Luis

Well, I think Lazav will help him. Can be a great choice to play both together.

  • Ben

fill a deck with this, consuming abberation, nighthowler, and any other creatures with P/T based on graveyards and you can get some real work done.

    • Josh

Just use duskmantle guildmage to deal the damage while you mill, eliminate the need for attackers

  • Sabisent

CAN THEY PLEASE JUST MAKE A DIMIR COMMANDER THAT ISN’T ABOUT MILLING PEOPLE’S BRAINS OUT
    PLEASE

    • JaceDovah

      Sygg, River Cutthroat

      • Sabisent

Wrexial is my main commander, but that looks really interesting as an alternate commander.

        • gaston205

Vela the Night Clad is also a decent choice

    • Hand of the Praetors

      Grimgrin

  • Robert Kupper

Well, I was actually hoping for a Mill god, but while he is very powerful, he doesn’t feel overly fun to me. A bit too straightforward.

  • Daniel Gilmore

if I can’t play Izzet in standard :’) I can at least play Dimir. Thank you, Richard Garfield PHD, for answering my humble prayers.

  • Daniel Gilmore

Fellow agents of House Dimir, ready your Mind Grinds. Our prayers have been answered!

  • http://tappedout.net/users/Op_Zero_Films_@Maverick/ William S. Miller

GAH! I how to use this. . .EVIL!

  • rokko

O how i love this… as if im not milling ppl bad now this is guna hurt

  • Josh

Phenax, wall of frost, jace memory adept, duskmantle guildmage. That sounds like the start of a beautiful mill strategy to me!

  • kepsen

This god is going to destroy ppl in limited…

  • Anthony Bartolomey

I think this card is worse then I expected it to be.

    • MagicGALAXY

      It’s fantastic and broke.

  • EmElw

Omenspeaker, Undead Phalanx and a Wall of Frost, coupled with Triton Tactics. This suddenly seems pretty reasonable. But, still very slow.

    • BobTheTitan

Sir you are thinking too small… Consuming Aberration. Doubles his power by milling your library.

  • bob saget

You know what? Go ahead people. Try to make this card happen. Meanwhile, I’m going to keep playing Mono Black and keep winning.

    • The Shockingly Anonymous

But decks like this can use mono black tactics.

      • bob saget

And how is that? Removal and thoughtseize? The problem with mill is that it takes so many cards to make it good, you don’t have enough other cards to keep yourself alive.

      • FlannelGuy

Ya, but then they don’t play enough creatures for this to be good. If you play a bunch of kill spells, then you don’t have the creatures to make this work. And if you just play the creatures needed to make this work, then you lose to Fanatic of Mogis or Supreme Verdict. And if you go for a mix of kill spells and creatures, then you don’t have many creatures and it’s easy for them to just keep getting killed off one for one. The problem with this god is that in reality, he does nothing. He is bad against just about every popular deck in the format.

  • Landon jones

    This and desecration demon
    Entering combat step- alright sac
In response mill u for 6 and put a +1/+1 counter on him so he’s stronger next turn

    • herbetjohnson

That doesn’t work. They make the choice to sac during the resolution of the ability. So if you mill it would have to be before the ability resolved, and i dont think they’d be eager to sac a creature to an already tapped demon.

  • BobTheTitan

All im gunna say to all the haters is two words: Consuming Aberration. Consuming mills you for, oh I dont know, 5, then gets to be a 10/10. Next turn, mill you for 10, gets to be a 20/20. Etc. Doubles his power with each mill.

    • James S Agee

      Szadek anyone?

      • BobTheTitan

        Completely agree

      • BobTheTitan

And with bobs lil bro in standard soon… Dimir control has a chance.

        • James S Agee

This deck is going to be SOOOO fun.

    • MagicGALAXY

Plus when Consuming Aberration gets huge, tap him to mill opponent >:D

  • the wind

and you thought that tower defense was completely useless
    now who’s top decking?

  • dinner

    Broken with force of savagery!

  • FlannelGuy

WOW this is really bad, like holy cow. I thought it’d be bad, but not this bad.

    • dinner

      dude it’s better than tarmogoyf.

      • BobTheTitan

its not that good lol. I agree its a lil broken but not that good.

        • Hans

          Haha, troll. Nice.

      • Joshua McTiernan

Lol what u got against the Goyf son?

        • MagicGALAXY

Unlike Storm Crow, Goyf dies to Earthquake, so he is a wimp. . .

    • BobTheTitan

Its completely broken with consuming aberration, the fact that you said its bad…. wow

      • BobTheTitan

Im not going to use him, just to clarify, but he isnt that bad.

      • FlannelGuy

What game are you playing where he’s broken with consuming aberration??? Do you even play standard???

        • BobTheTitan

yes, in fact I do, and consstantly win

    • szj

Just because it is not great in your format does not mean the card is bad. Also, not all cards should be 10/ 10 auto-includes.

  • MVT

It takes only two letters to turn this into lord of decepticons

    • Dudeman

      You can’t count

  • BadWolf

No need to look down in the comments. All you will see is people crying about how this is unviable and that everybody should copy the pros and netdeck only no matter what. Save yourself the headache and don’t look.
