• Desthian

    So… beautiful :’)

  • Derek Niles

not only is that one cool kitty snek, this is so good as a board card against control. Reminds me of Mistcutter Hydra’s spot back in the Ravnica standard

    • Zombie

It’s more like Loxodon Smiter, honestly.

  • MTG fan

This is amazing! And the new card with Gideon is amazing as well! :)

    • Sam Chi

      Renewed Faith?

      • MTG fan

        • Sam Chi

          It isn’t new

  • Kevan Kramer

With a creature type like Cat Snake, I feel it should have some blue. The creature type is very Simic.

  • Ryan Sullivan

Am I the only person that think this is some serious power creep?

    • Desthian

      I do think the same

    • Happy The Cat

yeah, next thing you know they’ll be printing stuff like Spellbreaker Behemoth.

    • Zombie

There’s already a 4/3 for 1G in Standard that no one cares about.

What control decks are you even playing against that need this?

      • God Enel

Standard is not the only format that matters.

        • Zombie

Imho Standard doesn’t matter period but w/e.

It’s stagnant garbage where only 5 decks actually matter.

Wizards refuses to print competent answers to the best archetypes they create and then wonder why Standard is hemmorhaging players.

I’ve been playing this game for over 17 years now. I’ve seen a lot.

Wizards is starting to stumble again. Wizards has legitimately come close to killing Magic 3 times.

I just don’t want them to start down the path of a 4th attempt.

Wizards not admitting their mistakes with Invocations is just the beginning. So now it’s my job to call them on their s***.

      • Jonathan Reynolds

A conditional 4/3 to be clear. (I assume you are referring to Greenwheel Liberator.)

        • Zombie

Yes, and Revolt is conditional as much as waking up every morning is conditional.

          It’s going to happen.

But it doesn’t matter because you still hate doing it.

    • Ryan Cameron

This card is much of an improvement from Gaeas’s Herald that’s for sure.

    • Whiskerbro

I mean countering isn’t a super relevant effect in most situations. An even if you are playing in that rare situation that it is, this thing is still normally outclassed by quite a few green creatures. For it’s body, there have been more efficient creatures printed already.

  • Kayden Barney

CAT SNAKE! I’m loving these new creature combinations wizards are coming out with!

    • JD Farrell

First cat monkeys, now cat snakes. Some serious green cat tribal support.

  • Ryan Sullivan

Rhonas is the god of strength, making animals? Maybe gruul?

    • Whiskerbro

Pretty sure all these gods are gonna be monocolored.

  • TogetherAlone

With a name like that It could have been an April fools joke lol

  • Zombie

I mean, it’s just a worse Loxodon Smiter most of the time, so it’s not escaping Standard ever.

The ability is nice but I highly doubt the current Standard meta requires anti-Blue control answers like this.

  • Oriattack P.

Im not complaining, but apparently you can put cat in from of any creature type. They should try “cat elephant” “cat wurm” or “cat angel” I would say cat demon but I think that is a thing. lol

    • JD Farrell

Or maybe it’s just these specific creatures. Maybe next world we get Snake Monkeys.

    • kacsa00001

cat angels sound amazing maybe on ajanis new plane

      • Hedronal

That sounds like Ajani dying and becoming said cat angel.

    • eltratzo

this actually apears to have been a mythological thing as well.

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

inb4 they make a puppy monkey baby

  • Arcus Diabolus

    Praise Lord Cat Snek.

  • Sam Chi

“Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black, you aiight Jack.” No Deathtouch?

    • Happy The Cat

I dont thing that Coral snake rhymes apply to Serpopards, and a three mana 4/3 is already big enough.

      • Sam Chi

Are they non-venomous? Also, the stats could’ve been adjusted.

        • Happy The Cat

well, based on lore they were just cats(mostly lions) who had really long necks, like giraffe style long necks. them becoming snakes is kinda wizard’s doing.
my guess is that they didn’t want it to have death touch cause we will probably get global effects that give trample and/or first strike and would have made this decent mid game card a git unfair.

  • Happy The Cat

    so… it’s a cat… snake… huh… weird
also a 4/3 Gaea’s Herald really shows a reason bolt or strike would be super helpful for general removal.

    • Zombie

If a 4/3 was too good for Standard, the Revolt 4/3 for 1G would have already blown it open.

There isn’t a large enough Blue control/tempo presence for this to really matter, honestly. And if Control was going to be a thing with Amonkhet, this simply existing ensures it won’t actually happen.

Like…What actually cares about this?.. Decks running Metallic Rebuke?

      • Jacob Kodicovic

        Well, someone’s a downer.

        • Zombie

          Just doing my job.

I crush people’s dreams as soon as possible so they don’t crush their own dreams trying dumb s**t that makes them 0-4 an FNM.

I’m not the hero this community deserves, but the one it needs.

      • DJ Pad

Revolt is not that easy to trigger in standard on turn 2 without playing bad cards or trying really hard.

      • Happy The Cat

I’m saying that 2~3 mana 4/3s being the norm means red doesn’t need all the three mana deal fives to only creatures they get. if they are just taking old card ideas and putting them on bigger bodies removal needs to be stepped up to deal with it. every type of card removal has been upgraded in some form in the last couple of sets except counter spells and burn. blue is the only color that really counters stuff and they have gotten bounce effects cause nobody enjoys being countered and to step up past existing counter spells would be painful for everyone involved. but burn isn’t like that. and burn is reds only removal so lowering the quality of burn drastically lowers the viability of red. considering in the last several sets most of reds removal was too weak for limited, red needs something new.

    • Kaiser

So Happy cat vs snake cat?

      • Happy The Cat

nah, seems like a chill dude. not like that “Graceful” Cat.

  • Jay Kilian

Two things – I had to imagine the artists face when they were assigned a Cat Snake. I’d love to see the other early sketches. Also, I can’t wait to hear Saffron Olive try to pronounce this

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Oh boy, now I know what I’m looking forward to!

  • Jacob Kodicovic

    Hello, nightmare fuel!

  • Ryū

A snake god with cat snakes?! Sghfdhjgc

  • Ultramegalord

    Wait….What! A cat and a snake hooked up in a bar………

  • Márcio Siqueira

Have science gone too far!? i think not!

  • xxxx

Auto include for every mono green edh deck till the end of time.
+ any thoughts about modern or legacy playability? Can u think of a deck that reaallly wants our new friend? Against miracles in legacy I would sideboard it in in every zoo deck. And in leg. miracles is the most popular deck for a very long time now. So I think this card can’t be unplayable but please correct me if I’m wrong.

    • Random Guy

I think in modern it will get bolted vs control. But CAT SNAKE!!!!!!!!

    • Giby86 .

Mono green EDH? I don’t see it at all…the body is largely irrelevant, nobody would counter it and it’s too fragile to count on if you really really need a creature spell to resolve.

  • Julna Buras

The general public: “YES, THIS CARD IS AWESOME”
Me, a control-playing intellectual: “This is not okay.”

    • Pepe the frog

You can’t intellectualise a punch in the face

  • the mad seer

i looked it up, apparently this is an actual mythical creature from ancient egypt

  • Blahblahblahbla

    So like.. I.. uh… hm.

  • Kirito and Asuna SAO

    I like this card

  • Caleb Halbrook

According to Wikipedia: “In Mesopotamia, the use of these ‘serpent-necked lions’ and other animals and animal hybrids are thought to be ‘manifestations of the chthonic aspect of the god of natural vitality, who is manifest in all life breaking forth from the earth’.”

So maybe there is some connection with this card and whatever the green god of the set is. I like the flavor of creatures being uncounterable as it correlates to the idea of all life breaking forth unrestrained

    • Kahai

      Green god is like Rhonas.

  • Dave

  • Kaiser

Cat snake? really? this card game never stop to suprise me.

  • Kahai

Green god is about green stronk. Trial involves fighting animals.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

The Syfy original movie monster I never knew I wanted. I love this.

  • Shagoth

I’m not the biggest fan of over-powered-but-not-broken cards like this. You know, cards that should be more expensive, are inherently too powerful to be called anything close to a decent design, but not going to see play. I.E. Phyrexian Obliterator.
I like the card and the effects, but did it really need that extra power? It would be less “overpowered/powercreeped” and more playable if it’s toughness was increased instead. Whatever, cat snakes for the win. I could see this in some fringe legacy and vintage stuff. Heck, even some modern sideboards. Though, strangely, in modern where there’s counterspells, there’s bolt. :/

    • Kaiser

Phyrexian Obliterator is a hell to play agains XD you murder him, exile him or suffer his rage. I like the coral snake happy cat evil twin, it could be awesome being a 2/4 with reach and death touch or something like that but well his ab is pretty relevant, that is something.

    • Scathain

I used to play against Phyrexian Obliterator in modern. The Phyrexian Obliterator deck kept bringing it back from the graveyard when it died. It was quite painful to play against with a monogreen deck, the deck fell apart after trampling over the third obliterator. I’m hoping this card doesn’t get used much in modern, would cause quite a bit of problems for my counterspell deck.

  • Aaaaand Snake Tribal in Standard just became a reality with this card. Thank heavens!

    • galen150

what snake tribal cards are you looking at? i’d like to see them. this one has no tribal effects

      • There are three other Snakes currently in the Standard format: Narnam Cobra, Winding Constrictor and Noose Constrictor. Combine that with Metallic Mimic, the plentiful counter support from Green, and the removal power from Black and you’ve got a formidable tribal deck built around Snakes.

        • Scathain

While there are good snakes, there are not yet true snake tribal effects in Standard. Elves are in a similar state. My casual snake deck will likely be happy, though.

        • galen150

agian, what snake tribal cards are you looking at, because you still havent named one

          • Perhaps I’m not understanding what you mean by “tribal cards”. Every one of those creatures that I named is labeled as a snake (says it within the ‘creature’ bar) , sans the Metallic Mimic (which can become a snake). As such, they are part of the Snake Tribe within Magic. This is comparable to every creature that’s a Wizard, an Insect or a Dragon and so on. Each creature in the game is part of a particular tribe. Help me understand what you’re driving at.

          • Scathain

I think he is looking for cards that read “Snakes you control get …”, “Snakes you control have …”, “… gets +X/+X where x is the number of snakes you control”, “… unless you control a snake”, “… if you control a snake”, or the like. As in actual tribal effects, not just having a pretty subtype. Things like Seshiro the Annointed or Sosuke, Son of Seshiro. The actual snake tribal effects are largely in Kamigawa block at the moment, though Kaseto is a neat exception (who is in a commander deck). Metallic Mimic doesn’t really count as snake-specific tribal, since you pick the creature type when it enters, though it is a useful card for tribal decks.

      • Accordingly, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more Snakes revealed in Amonkhet. Prowling Serpopard may just be the first.

  • Pandancules

Let’s say my opponent has this out and I have dynavolt tower with three energy. The opponent attempts to cast a creature. Can I then cast a spell to counter the creature and before it resolves trigger dynavolt tower and use it to bolt the cat-snake, allowing my cointerspell to counter their creature?

    • galen150

i’d need to check, but i believe that you can try to counter and then if this creature is on the field, the counter just fails when it tries to resolve. so if you cast the counter, get the energy, then bolt the snake before the counter resolves it would work.

      • Hedronal

Yes, that is how it works.

        • galen150

          thank you :D

    • DJ Pad

Why not just bolt the snake in response to the creature being cast, and then when it dies, counter the spell. Makes no sense to potentially waste a counterspell if they have anything that can save the snake.

      • Hedronal

Because of needing dynavolt tower’s “whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you get two energy” to happen to have enough energy to bolt something with it, as in the example.

      • Pandancules

In this scenario I didn’t have the energy to bolt it with the tower until I cast the counter spell

    • Omeneon

You are correct. You can target the creature spell, but you have to destroy the cat snake before the counterspell resolves in order to counter the creature. But it’s better just to bolt the cat snake first then cast the counterspell just in case they counter your bolt.

      • Hedronal

The bolt is the dynavolt tower (with 3 energy) in that example, so Pan there would have to cast first, then bolt, then successfully counter.

    • Catt Caller

Yes, you are able to sequence your spells and abilities in that way. Uncounterable does not mean Untargetable. the creature spells are still legal targets for counterspell when the Serpopard is in play. You can follow up your casting of a counterspell with a Dynavolt Tower activation to kill the Prowling Serpopard and then your counterspell will resolve, countering whichever creature spell the opponent is/was trying to resolve.

  • galen150

i need one. thats all i can say. i need a snake cat.

  • alexander macrae

Lol at creature typing. Are serpopard’s a thing in mythology? Actually good considering Gaea’s Herald isn’t uncounterable itself.

  • Edwin Marín Castro

I hope this don’t get expensive too soon.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

I doubt it. Being that its only strength is against creature counters, it will be strictly sideboard and maybe a good edh card. Not worthy of a high price.

  • Caleb Halbrook

If and when this shows up in standard, can we affectionately call it “Sherpaderp”

    • Hedronal

I get the derp, but why “sherp”, specifically?

      • Caleb Halbrook

Well “serp” kinda sounds like “sherp”…I guess you could call it serpaderp but sherpaderp sounds…derpier?

        • Hedronal

I’ll go with serpaderp if either, sherp just doesn’t seem close enough.

          • Caleb Halbrook

Ok fair enough…honestly serpaderp is kinda growing on me

          • Daniel Kaine Allen

Serpaderp Master Race it is then

          • EuroNightmare

            All hail the master race

  • Daniel Kaine Allen

This would be straight up OP if it had deathtouch.

  • Jakub Rabyniuk

    Next step is ManBearPig.

    • Winter Trabex

      Spider Pig.

    • Xuxa

    • the mad seer

  • Alex Egertsen

cat snake really? copy cat and snek just had a kid

  • Minizem

Amonkhet research team creates cat snake … HAS SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR?!?!?

  • Marvin Sürig

I know two gods who has been very naughty.

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Actually, Gideon and Oketra are together. Expect to see the emergence of Leonin when we return to Amonkhet.

  • Jalais

Am I the only one a little sad it’s not just a picture of a ferret?

  • Deadly Berry

    Bird Crocodile next please.

  • zipec

I really wish this was Cat Snake Chimera. All animal combinations should be chimera as well.

    • Phillip J Ward

splash some insect in there too. make its fangs ovipositors.

      • Jacob Kodicovic

Also, give it wings for nightmare fuel.

  • Nanya

There’s an elf that does the same thing for 1G.

    • Christopher

Gaia’s Herald doesn’t do the same thing. The Elf can be countered and the effect of it is all creatures, not just creatures you control.

    • Reyos Blackwood

Very different actually. Gaea’s Herald herself can be countered, she prevents all creature spells from being countered, not just yours so Simic decks using her can’t counter their opponent’s creatures, and she is much weaker, 1/1 is a lot easier to kill than 4/3 though both are in bolt range.

    • Melissa Juice

      No there isn’t.

      • Nanya

Gaia’s Herald makes it so creatures can’t be countered.

        • Melissa Juice

  • Urutan

I’m just waiting to see how translators will deal with that name

    • galen150

i assume they’ll do something similar to what the English name is, smash the names of the 2 animals together. pokemon has been doing it forever :P

    • Happy The Cat

a Serpopard is a real thing, or at least it already existed in Egyptian lore. so they would probably just call it by it’s name

    • Abrikot

They did it well in French. That’s the same name (serpopard) which is a contraction of “Serpent” (snake) and “Léopard” (leopard). That sounds funny :P

  • galen150

did anyone else just see it as a snake at first? i didnt actually notice the legs and just saw them as the curves of a normal snake

    • Lilith Aberdeen

      Yeah, me to.
Loved it even more after I saw the legs though xD

    • Timothy Barker

      I DID

  • Winter Trabex

    Prowling Mustard.

  • Jay Kilian

Anyone else waiting to hear Saffron Olive mispronounce this?

  • Sam “Billy” Rosenberg

Well, it isn’t as if counter magic is setting standard on fire. Hopefully this foreshadows some strong control cards in ahmonkhet.

  • Brenno

    I want one….
