Purphoros, God of the Forge - Theros Spoiler

Purphoros, God of the Forge

  • Color: Red
  • Type: Legendary Enchantment Creature - God
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • Set:

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to red is less than five, Purphoros, God of the Forge isn’t a creature.

When a creature enters the battlefield under your control Purphoros, God of the Forge deals 2 damages to all your opponents.

1 ManaRed Mana: Each creature you control gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

  • FFKRONOS

    Strictly more ambiguous than Ambiguity

  • harakka

Atleast I can say the red nyx frame looks awesome.

  • William S. Miller

Some men just want to watch the world burn. . .

  • Martin Kaca

Not bad, shock when you play a creature. Until it is translated further, can’t tell if it works with tokens.

    • YouGotFranked

I don’t see anything in the text that makes me believe it says “non-token” and God are made to have some synergy with their weapons so i pretty sure it applies to tokens too.

      • Martin Kaca

I am just imagine this into assemble the legion. That will end a game fast.

        • David Fitzsimmons

You think too big and too hard. Think small, like common knowledge small, at the size of one

          AKROAN CRUSADER!!!
ps: get it? coomon knoweldge? HA bad puns are bad

      • William S. Miller

‘Young Pyromancer” might have a good friend in this card. . .

  • Andy Welch

    Pyrodriver, here I come!

  • MtgMind-Welder98

    There…thats better :)

  • MrMiyagi

Imagine him in an Animar EDH. Play him for R and have fun :-)

  • CodyGozRawr

That triggered ability is soooo OP, but the moonveil dragon ability costs too much, I would use him in a boros/naya token deck, but would rarely if ever use the pump ability.

    • David Fitzsimmons

you dont NEED his pump. EVER. What’s that Akroan Crusader? You wanna play with Puforos too? But you can’t Akroan Crusader! I will be like the unholy union of Stone Forge Mystic and Squadron Hawns all over again! You are gonna get him banned!

insanity aside, Akroan Crusader ALONE is enough to b ban worthy. I HATE to see what other ways to abuse him exist in this block. Especially consider Akroan is a ‘mere’ common one drop >.>

      • CodyGozRawr

I know, that what I said, if read the comment I say I would rarely, IF EVER us the pump ability, the only time I would use it is if I had nothing better to do. How is akroan crusader alone ban worthy, he’s not THAT good.

        • David Fitzsimmons

Akroan Crusader himself is not ban worthy, just like squadron hawks were not ban worthy on their own. They allowed Stone forge Mystic to get extra abused compared to other cards. In this case Akroan Crusader is a mere 1 drop who can be pumped quickly to pop out tokens for that damage. Those tokens all have haste so they can also attack on top of the damage from them entering the battlefield. To me this allows a focus on cheap enchantments to build up a small amount of damage while working into getting Purforos onto the field.

So yeah, Akroan on his own is almost nothing, well not really he still has good rush capability. But the point is, that he is capable of REALLY pushing Purforos’s ability to high levels with simply being a one drop common.

Also I should clarify something I mentioned earlier about never needing that pump ability on Purphoros. I meant to also say even if it was a one mana cost ability, it still would almost never be needed. I want to be spending that mana on creatures for nice direct damage.

  • Nickerton

Definitely going in my Krenko EDH.

    • hurdur

      oh gawd noh

  • meepo

Add War Elemental for limitless fun in edh.

  • Justin

I am kind of scared to see this in a Naya Token deck. Assuming we don’t get answers to god’s other then detention sphere and terminus.

    • Joshua McTiernan

Don’t forget Chained to The Rocks.

    • David Meyers

If I played this guy, it’d be in a white weenie or selesnya deck with only a splash of red. An indestructible enchantment is a lot harder to bounce/exile/sacrifice than a creature, so I’d rather have him stay in enchantment form! Can you imagine having this guy and curving into Elspeth? +1 take 6 damage.

      • David Fitzsimmons

screw that noise. Just use Akroan Crusader.

        • KoodlePadoodle

I’m sorry, lets just, play a field of little white non-tokens, pop legions initiative, and smack everyone for too much.

    • Sequoyah Sebastian Hoffman

Terminus is going to rotate when this guy enters Standard.

    • keltal

you can turn them into boars with the new blue spell in theros XD

  • welan

turn 1 . Barrage of expendable. Turn two Young pyromancer , turn 3 Chandra pheonix . Turn four. This. Turn five. Molten rebirth.

  • Josh Kaufman

Great, once again red gets the worst of the bunch.

    • richardshort2001

      Standard: Young Pyromancer

      Modern: Emrakul’s Hatcher

      Legacy: Firecat Blitz

      • guy

well thought out, i like it.

    • Jeremysclone

How are Heliod and Nylia (I don’t care if that’s spelled wrong) better? Thassa I can see an argument for, but this guy is at least the second best, and seems pretty darn good.

      • David Fitzsimmons

surely he meant worst as in the most OP, like worst card in terms of game ruiner. That sorta thing

At least I hope that is what he is saying.

    • David Fitzsimmons

If by worst you mean extreme potential for being OP and broken then I agree. I mean him and just Akroan Crusader, a one drop common, will be able to inflict some massive amounts of damage. He is going to be a beast with many different combo interactions, and considering his trigger is creatures entering battlefield? this is something that will just get even more ridiculous over time with any new cards that act as cheap and simple token production.

    • OrangeCatTurd

      do you even play Magic???

  • Justice

Thinking he’ll immediately be banned as an EDH commander like Griselbrand

    • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Bullshit. Compare this to Marton Stromgald. Which one is stronger?

      • cumonmysprinkles

        Purphoros for sure mate.

        • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Both get blocked by a 1/1 goblin. Yes. But Marton makes 10 attacking goblins do 110 damage. Marton gets better the more creatures you control. Where Purphoros is just a dumb beater with some damage output slapped onto it. This doesn’t mean I won’t give Purphoros a shot in some deck of mine. And don’t wonder about the 10 goblins… I am an EDH player and EDH only.

          • Waffles

You play eleven creatures the entire table is dead due to commander damage. Purphoros is definitely meaner.

          • Derp

Do you even play commander? Commander damage is required to be COMBAT damage for 21 lethal.

  • richardshort2001

    Modern Monored

    4 Ornithopter
    4 Memnite
4 Purphoros, God of the Forge
    4 Kuldotha Rebirth
    4 Molten Birth
    4 Seige-Gang Commander
    4 Empty the Warrens
    4 Goblin Offensive
    4 Krenko, Mob Boss
    24 Mountain

    • guy

i like it, but is their a way to tutor for purphoros? since you do need him, and i dont feel comfortable with hoping to draw and not get countered.

    • nitro

no because you want him to be an enchantment. most people play kill spells, but very few have decks that have a lot of enchant destroyers. i’d just play one or two orochi hatchery’s pay 6 mana each.

  • Andy Dondes

This and Thassa are propably the best gods so far

  • Fbn Dnl Schlr

    Equip with Loxodon Warhammer. Profit.

  • Matt Stone

I’m getting so many ideas with this guy :D

    Great card.

  • Indraco

Why mess around with tokens? I just want to curve Reckoner and one other red creature into a turn 4 Indestructible 6/5. They wipe your board? Purphoros sticks around as an enchantment and makes them bleed as your rebuild your army.

  • jace must die

i’m seeing an indestructible combo of Warstorm Surge and Moonveil Dragon.
compared to Warstorm: i would say the lower cost and each opponent don’t outweigh the loss of so many great combos like; Hornet Queen, Blightsteel Colossus and Balefire Dragon.
compared to Moonveil: there no comment it much worse.
Granted as a whole it a great card and there are many brutal things it can do

    • Pethrax

Moonveil would be useless in this combo…..its ability only affects creatures on the battlefield, not creatures entering the battlefield. Also, screw Warstorm, I’ll just go with Assemble the Legion and grab Heliod and Elspeth so I can just sit there spawning TOKENS WITH NO MANA SYMBOLS and kill you in 3-4 turns, cuz they never turn into creatures, and you got all the chump blockin u need.

      • Angel of Shadows

if you had half a brain you would have realized that referencing Moonveil was only in the context of the buff ability, which Moonveil’s is far superior, it can be used 3 times for each one time Purphoros’s is.

As for you comments on Warstorm, it is also a superior ability, than the “2 damage to each opponent” for many reasons.
        1) the creature deals the damage so any abilities the creature has matter; IE infect, deathtouch, lifelink, wither.
        2) you can target creatures. so if they have that one creature that just casing problems (Nighthawk, Eldrazi, ext…)it can be got rid of which can keep you from losing, or you can clear the opponent’s field and swing for the win.
        3) you can multiple Warstorms out causing even more damage.

not saying that there are not cases were i would rather have Purphoros over Warstorm, such as using Elemental Mastery or Krenko, Mob Boss, i spawn 6-10 tokens and win, but there some token gen like Sarkham Vol’s -6, were you only get five i would rather do the twenty divided into groups of 4 than the 10 to each opponent, since outside of casual variants it mostly one on one play, and that just thinking tokens.

it is a fun card and i will most likely get some for my mono-red casual deck, to work along side my Warstorms

        • Pethrax

I do apologize, I mistook your reference with the Dragon, I fully admit that, and yes, his buff is far superior, there is no argument here about it. And Warstorm’s ability is superior in a 1v1 it is true, but in a multi-player format, I believe Purphoros wins, due to the damage being dealt to all opponents, at least when we are talking about one instance of either. With point number 3 and 1, yes Warstorm does outstrip Purphoros in terms of utility and damage as long as you have point 3, and creatures utilizing said extra abilities. Phurphoros is simply faster at this point in time, and to be honest, I myself use a Krenko deck that would love him, but only if I am playing multiple people, otherwise I too will stick with Warstorm surge.

  • FuzzyKittyBark

    ow, my wallet

  • Aubrey

Is it just me, or is there a combo between this guy and the new Elspeth? Use her +1 to get 3 creatures out, then trigger this guy’s ability for 6 damage? Oh, if only increasing devotion wasn’t rotating out.

  • Deterth

Burning tree, burning tree, burning tree, Gorehouse chainwalker oh im sorry did you just take eight damage to the face

  • Thorgrim901

If opponent’s devotion is less than five, can i send it to the graveyard with Duress??

    • Josh

I’d say probably not, since the card itself has creature as a subtype.
