• Tolle

O_O dropping this turn 2 in limited is still REALLY nice.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Does anyone keep hearing a booming voice that shouts “VALUE” whenever they see this card?

    • Kaiser

this in limited is really sick. The next turn your opponent will do nothing but try to resolve the snake.

  • Eli Eyal Broide

Would’ve been nice if Rhonas itself was a 5/4 Deathtouch Indestructible instead of a 5/5

    • Jacob Kodicovic

      Why?

      • Eli Eyal Broide

Because then Rhonas would be the same p/t as his last stand…
(And if the last stand token was a 5/5 than probably this would’ve cost 1GG… which would have killed this card…)

        Flavorwise

    • magicalfollower

So he would die to Grasp of Darkness?

      • Eli Eyal Broide

        Sure why not…

  • galen150

well….. thats certainly a card. i know my friend with the mono green commander deck would totally use it to go off turn 3

  • Ryū

Not sure if this will make the cut in my Rhonas edh deck, but it’s certainly cool.

    • Eli Eyal Broide

Go flavor man… Go flavor :)

      • Ryū

I would, but when my lands are usually tapping for 2 or 3 mana each, I’d prefer that they untap.

  • Writerofthings

i really like this. It makes me want to build a fun abzan token deck.

  • ColorCaptain

Wait wait… is the snake token his ACTUAL HEAD?? Is Rhonas Earthwurm Jim??

    • Kumba

Nay, it’s a spell he used on his staff. That would be cool, though.

    • name moniker

The art is a bit blurry, but this looks like It is the staff rhonas always carried. You can kind of see rhonas with the scorpion God standing behind him in the background.

      • Jackson Means

the scorpion god is in front of him, he is the target of the staff, and is not behind rhonas at this point

    • TogetherAlone

No this is the moment that was in the story yesterday. As Rhonas dies he channels the last of his magic into his staff and throws it at the scorpion god turning it into a giant snake.

      • Gustavo Martinez

        Where can i read the stories? ;-;

        • Jackson Means

The mtg daily articles always has the stories, or you can check out the uncharted realms page.

        • Osiria

u just google magic story archive o/ there u find every story completed from origins till amonketh :o since hou is still being completed have the link here :3 http://magic.wizards.com/en/products/hour-devastation/story

          • Gustavo Martinez

            Ty :3

        • Osiria

          ps: have fun reading ^o^

  • Jonathan Reynolds

Would I skip turn 3 in limited to put a 5/4 on the board? Yes. Yes I would.

This becomes rough in mid-game though.

    • DJ Pad

You generally wouldn’t play this if you had other things to cast in the mid-game. And if it’s late game and you are in topdeck mode, then the drawback is pretty minimal.

Casting this in a limited game, on turn 2, on the play, is savage though.

  • NC

    Before I die… I leave you all with…

    A BIG SNAKE.

    • Gregory Walter

      Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAAKE!!

  • Friedrich

Turn 1-3 great turn 4-X bad.

  • Soren Szilver

Finally a card in this cycle that might actually be playable. Works great with populate too for modern possibly

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Holy carp I forgot all about populate!

  • Happy The Cat

also thanks for actually making this a snake and not a dumb Naga, this may actually be useful to a real tribe.
would have loved if it was an instant so you could put it in Isochron Scepter and have a snake turret powered by Sol.

  • AustinSmith

Maybe good enough to run in modern monogreen stompy? A slightly more aggressively statted Leatherback Baloth that still evades bolt, comes out a turn early, but skips your next turn. If you drop a land T3 you can still do Aspect of Hydra/Rancor/Vines of Vastwood shenanigans. Might be incredible.

    • NC

      Still dies to Push/Decay…

      • jaya

        Dies to doomblade, case solved.

        • NC

lands don’t untap is a bigger drawback than people realize I guess.

      • Christopher Ciolino

oh good lord, better not run goyf then either cause it dies to push/decay! so sick of seeing this, every threat has an answer, that’s how Magic is played.

What should be evaluated is it worth trying for this on turn 2 to have it killed in response then losing your 2 lands on turn 3. getting timewalked for one black mana in modern doesn’t seem like a good idea

        • Fred Weasley

Dude I’m glad someone else finally understands Magic! Magic is like rock, paper, scissors where something beats the other even though in itself it may be strong. For example: good old Emrakul still dies to Summary Dismissal (even though it’s not played in Modern really), Fatal Push still dies to any relevant counterspell, etc.

        • NC

Goyf doesn’t stop you from playing on curve. You’re investing heavily.

        • DJ Pad

Which is precisely the point. If somebody uses push or decay on a Goyf, there isn’t really much tempo loss and is a fair trade. IF you play this and they remove it, you’re way behind, because they basically time walked you.

          • NC

tbf, you could play this turn 3 with Vines mana open which is pretty cool

          • DJ Pad

Right but a turn 3, 5/4 token, with downside, just isn’t that impressive anymore. I mean just play Rhonas and other creatures then.

  • jaya

Wait its not 1GG? but GG? Mindblown. Well cant wait for the red, so far I would argue that the black is the best, white being more combo oriented.

  • Chuck

Made me remember the old times of Craddle Guard.

  • crispzilla

Art reminds me a lot of Culdcept

    • Gregory Walter

Reminds me of that scene from the Prince of Egypt.

  • Shagoth

Run this in a deck with a bunch of mana dorks, which cards in modern already do, then this is close to tarmogyf.

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Could be fun in a green/white token build. Or even some kind of white board control where you stack anointed and keep wiping the board and restoring your life before unleashing a ton of snakies. But really this seems pretty good with anointed and the green trial/cartouche

  • LetsGetReal

I really dislike green cards like this. Making cheap big creatures is not interesting. Give me ramp back which is a unique effect not this stopm garbage :(

    • Vixin Xiviir

Cheap, big creatures is the entire other half of green’s mechanics, and the one with the most technical design space. You can’t win ’em all, bud.

  • Alexandre Donnart

Well, mana dorks, as always. Joraga Treespeaker has a new friend. It’s casual, but if it sticks, you still have 3 manas on Turn 3. It’s also one of my favourite dorks so I will have to try.

  • Deadly Berry

And then I used populate. Profit.

    • Happy The Cat

then t4 drop Growing Ranks. snek all the things!

      • Jay Kilian

I have tried Selesnya tokens in Modern forever. This may improve the deck dramatically.

  • Random Guy

    Seems good in vintage?

  • Miles Rinesmith

    not bad for Tiny Leaders.

  • DesArthes

This card is really a GG: if opponent don’t have fatal push, you win game. If opponent cant destroy this card immediately, then its always be bad trade for him or her. (Even in T3 you have mana for blossoming defence).
Aggressively costed cards should had drawback like Serra Avenger, or at least like amonkhet ETB with -1/-1 counters creatures (in that case creatures are big only when you “sacrifice” another one).

    • Jay Kilian

You won’t always have this turn two, and not unwrapping makes it cost 4 mana at the least in actual cost. A 5/4 for GGGG is just ok. Much like swiftspear or goblin guide it will dominate early and stink late.

    • NC

‘take next turn off’ is a solid drawback. so is ‘terrible awful topdeck’.
