• Jay Kilian

8 mana for this is absurd. Tokens don’t even have trample.

    • Gumby

With the kind of ramp green has, 8 mana isn’t too far out. Token generation into Second Harvest into this the next turn….it’s still a really good card, at least in EDH.

      • Tolle

Meh. Even though 8 mana isn’t that much all you are getting is a 5/5 a turn. Which won’t be much use…

      • DJPad

With that kind of mana, just win the game on the spot with craterhoof or tooth and nail or something.

    • Curt Vandruff

It is, and green edh already has more antiflying enchants… but could be a fun marvel target in standard … t4 get a 5/5 blocker and shuts down fliers

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

I think the excuse is that harvest season kind of made it possible to get this out on turn 4.

  • Kameenook

Flavorfully it’s weird that the sandwurms prevent flyers from attacking, but not ground creatures. I get if they got mad ups flyers can’t get through, but it doesn’t make sense that ground creatures would be able to for some reason.

    • the mad seer

      look at flavor text

      • Jazzyboy1

Yeah, but why don’t they guard their dunes as well as the skies?

        • Jacob Kodicovic

My theory is that birds can escape from the wurms and eventually learn not to go there, but ground creatures are all killed by the ambushing wurms, and they never learn because all who visit never return.

        • Curt Vandruff

They do, it makes a 5/5 wurm at the end of your turn(s) to block everything else. (If it was g/w then I could see it just being blazing archon)

      • Kameenook

The flavor text explains that they guard “even the skies”, but doesn’t that imply they’re also guarding the ground ? Makes more sense IMO just to have nothing attack from a flavor standpoint.

    • Happy The Cat

I think it’s cause the 5/5 wurn IS the wurms blocking the ground game

  • Kumrag

I’d run it in some superfriends edh, but das it

  • Random Guy

Oh I thought it said WITHOUT flying lol. That’s bad then.

    • Kyle K-glow Glover

i think you are missing the point, you see, it may be hard to swing in for damage past a green midrange deck with 5/5 wurms

      • Random Guy

Like, maybe, but only if the board stalls for 2+ turns at 8+ mana.

        • Kyle K-glow Glover

im assuming you are supposed to ramp into this, and kaladesh blocks gave us some cheap dorks to do it with

          • Random Guy

Or you could ramp into an actual win?

          • Kyle K-glow Glover

im saying what the card is for, if you were to play green blue control, you could use this card as your win con if you wanted by running 2 making it your top end, and simply stalling with control cards while you generate superior creatures to what some matchups can field.
it isnt ideal, but again, i think people rag on cards too hard for no reason, and instead of thinking about how they could use a card (even if they dont end up using it do to cons) they only think about how bad every card is.

          • Random Guy

I mean… is there something better to ramp into? If so, this will be limited-only?

  • Happy The Cat

now to gift people Levitation like I’m playing Bower Passage again.

  • Teddy Gillespie

I think you can ramp into this no sooner than turn 5 in standard. Using mana dorks it only gets you to 7 mana on turn 4, so if turn 5 is viable I think this isn’t a horrible ramp into strategy

    • Aaron Hooker

Cryptolith Rite and marvel can get it done sooner.

      • Aaron Hooker

T1-any 1 cc creature. T-2 Cryptolith Rite. T-3 Saheeli Ri. T-4 felidar guardian into Sandwurm Convergence. BAM! (mic drop)

        • Donovan Davenport

you could also just win with the combo lol

  • Ryū

    Well alrighty then. Neat.

  • Caleb Halbrook

We need something to ramp into now but I’m not sure this is it. Back in dragons block we had the dragonlords but now there’s nothing that great at 6-7+ mana except eldrazi which rotate out very soon

    • Phil Bowles

      Giant sandwurm moats?

EDIT: Nevermind, I thought it said without flying too.

      • Ryan

To be fair, with the constant generation of 5/5s I find it hard to imagine ground creatures getting through either :p

        • Phil Bowles

Or just play it in a Commander deck with Moat or Island Sanctuary (preferably the latter, so your own wurms can attack).

  • Arcus Diabolus

Soooooo,in terms of flavor, what exactly is stopping flyers from even attempting to attack again? Because if its just giant wurms leaping hundreds of feet into the air, then I don’t get what allows grounded units to attack either.

    • Joshua Feight

The wurms are actually doing it all. They scare away fliers, but since you’re getting 5/5s every turn, you’re deterring grounded attackers anyway. Essentially this is saying no one can attack in the air and only big creatures can attack on the ground.

      • Arcus Diabolus

So what about big things in the air??? And nothing is keeping small dudes from plowing right into these wurms either, unlike the flyers.

        • NC

Birds: officially smarter than human soldiers.

          • Arcus Diabolus

Wings are made of brains, clearly.

        • Hedronal

Big things get big by not dying, like by seeing the chance of multiple worms jumping them I guess.

          • Arcus Diabolus

Or you know, angels, dragons, demons, sphinxes or anything else that happens to have wings, is intelligent enough to know what they are getting into and do it anyway, and are known for being the powerhouses of their colors, all of which are present in Amonkhet.

For example, I have a hard time believing Nicol Bolas or Kefnet would steer clear of a bunch of leaping wurms simply because the two of them happen to fly.

          • Hedronal

Fair, probably not meant with indestructible in mind.

  • chris_m_h

Anointed Procession works well with this. G/W token variant could be viable.

    • DJPad

      That’s a little win-more

  • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

… ok those worms are green? Makes sense ;)

    Card:
    Flavor wins!

PS: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a83fe8a021763dcf8d35f405fc55cc1c51648a145f62f0e39dfbc87bd8471927.jpg …I think black zombie worms show up on common slot later ?

  • Vincent Godin-Filion

Sweet! A new win condition for my casual mono green control deck loll. It’s perfect! :D

  • James Allen

This with Kiora’s Ult = WIN!

  • kmk888

I do actually really like this card but I don’t like my ramp target to be weak to instant speed enchantment removal.

    • Blahblahblahbla

Aren’t all threats in the entire game susceptible to some form of instant removal:permission? Even OG Emrakul gets got by a few instant speed removals.

      • Jake Miller

i hit a Liliana and Emrakul with the same To the Slaughter. i hit my peak in MTG and may never feel that accomplished again.

      • kmk888

Eldrazi really aren’t. Ulamog is 2 more mana, immediately wins the game if he resolves and puts the other player way behind even if he doesn’t.

Plus I was more talking about Naturalize effects and other common answers out of the sideboard.

  • Kaiser

If you can put this for free in the board, man, could be very cool

    • DJPad

There are much better enchantments to put into play if you’re cheating it out (Omniscience, Zendikar Resurgent etc.)

      • NotMtG

        Let. People. Enjoy. Things.

I agree, Kaiser, cheating out an enchantment that protects you from flyers and gives you a 5/5 per turn would be pretty sweet.

        • DJPad

Lol, ok, enjoy playing bad casual and competitive cards, I won’t stop you.

          • Kyle K-glow Glover

as a competitive player myself, i still like to look at cards and enjoy the design space attempted, a card doesnt have to be explicitly good to be enjoyed.
            stay snarky kid.

          • Jake Miller

synergy can make some strange things happen and otherwise benign effects can become huge.. also this card would be awesome to cheat in anyway.. it’s excellent and has a lot of combo potential. RARELY do i actually take an 8-costed enchantment seriously, but i think this is such a sweet card even if it’s a bit Timmy

      • NC

I’d rather hit this on Marvel than Resurgent.

        • DJPad

          Not in EDH you wouldn’t

          • Hedronal

In commander you don’t need to cheat it out though.

  • Shagoth

Hey, the worms are supposed to be four times as big, ripoff.
And they’re supposed to be legendary, mythic rare, and only look like the size of two elephants.

  • Insight66

    You are entering a NO-FLY-ZONE
Turn back NOW or we will
    Scramble the Wurms!

  • Vincent Godin-Filion

Sandworms from Frank Herbert’s Dune !!!
Only needs a few Fremen… and spice.

  • Jacob Kodicovic

Have you heard the news? Temmet has issued a decree to build a Moat around the sandwurms for maximum protection of Naktamun!

    • Aurore

And make the desert pay for it.

  • Deadly Berry

In Amonkhet, the worms eat the birds.

    • Zombie

      The early bird f***ing dies.

  • Solarstorm flare

how is this not mythic it’s so good!
