Dark Ascension Visual Spoiler - Séance

Séance

At the beginning of each upkeep, you may exile target creature card from your graveyard. If you do, put a token onto the battlefield that’s a copy of that card except it’s a Spirit in addition to its other types. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step.

Please Wizards, stop making terrible rares. This isn’t even a casual playable, and it’ll be extremely difficult to build around in draft. I like a lot of this set so far but this card is junk.

    • Mtgfanatic

Well, I can see a sacrifice kinda deck using this in casual. And it might work in slower formats like EDH

  • Carlvncvr80

    Solarflare???

  • TheProfessor

not enough creatures. plus they wouldn’t waste a turn or a card slot on this junk in solar flare or any control deck for that matter

  • Rando606

it is junk since the copy doesn’t have haste

  • Ragamander

C’mon guys; there’s a use for this if we try to think of one. First of all, this revives one dead creature during each player’s upkeep, so you can choose to only revive creatures during your opponent’s upkeeps to get extra blockers, at the same time retriggering ETB abilities (such as Warstorm Surge or, more competitively, Sun Titan, bringing back Phantasmal Image, copying the Titan-Spirit). Furthermore, if you’ve got Urabrask the Hidden (or Crimson Mage, I guess), then the copies would be able to attack if you make them on your turn.

But the main thing I want to point out is that Sundial of the Infinite lets you keep the creature tokens you revive on your turn.

Sure; that can be done with Mimic Vat as well, but Séance (A) does it automatically, with no mana required, (B) can “reanimate” both creatures that died before it hits the battlefield and ones that never hit the battlefield at all, (C) circumvents Grafdigger’s Cage (much like Back from the Brink, but for FAR less mana), and (D) won’t rotate out of Standard in October (perhaps only relevant if M13 sees a reprint of the Sundial).

So no, it’s not pure junk, and it’s definitely playable in casual combo decks (Sundial of the Infinite, Warstorm Surge, Urabrask the Hidden, etc). There’s no telling how the metagame will shape up (especially with Grafdigger’s Cage), but I admit it’s unlikely that it will ever see competitive Constructed play, and it’s probably going to be rather unhelpful in Limited, depending on whether there are many good creatures with Haste in Dark Ascension (’cause Innistrad, for pretty much all intents and purposes, just had Night Revelers).

use it with a Labratory Maniac, and then use things that strip your library into your graveyard. Seance the Maniac before your empty draw.
