• TogetherAlone

Very Interesting. Its no hexproof but with the Break neck rider this could be good.

  • Khan1104

OMG Expedite, Slip Through Space O.o

  • Alexander Malinin (Cfyz)

Now combine it with Zada, Hedron Grinder. Every spell essentially doubles the number of wolves you control.

    • Jazzyboy1

Yeah, and you don’t even need any other wolves in the deck for that. This guy is just great on his own in a Zada deck. Get a 2/2 wolf every time you cast a spell on him. Very nice. And with Zada out, you get 1 wolf the first time, then 2, then 4, then 8, etc.

This thing is amazing in a Zada deck.

      • ashenmoor

excelent idea. in modern you could mutagenic growth a pack really fast

  • That Guy

tribal wolves/werewolves is now a thing

    • Happy The Cat

      dude, it was a thing

      • That Guy

It wasn’t really viable for standard tho.

        • Happy The Cat

it was super viable, it’s just that esper control had snapcaster, Restoration Angel, Dismember and a nice amount of other control, then when rav2 came in it switched to usa control where sphinx’s rev and all of the rest of the stuff just made the deck untouchable

  • Zombie

His ability is all well and good, but why the **** does a 2/2 have Trample?

    • Jazzyboy1

      Because lords….

    • Khan1104

They want you to pump him.

    • MrAptronym

Well he is green and rewards you for targetting him with spells. It’s a neat boost and a hint that you can giant growth him for a 5/5 trampler and a 2/2 token.

    • Eric Barton

They had to give him something relevant to him to cost 3 mana.

      • Zombie

Yeah but why not Lifelink or Vigilance or something. That would have fit far better with a smaller Werewolf.

        • ashenmoor

even menace would fit better tbh

        • Tragic

This is a green creature, and green creatures can get huge in an instant, literally, so trample isn’t so bad.

    • EJ

You can Giant Growth him, make him a 5/5 with Trample, and generate a 2/2 wolf token.

Any other combat tricks which target will do the same thing.

OTOH, if your opponent Doom Blades it, you still get a Wolf Token.

    • Happy The Cat

because how else are you going to get over that eldrazi scion?
also most of the time you are going to want to hit this with buffs, allowing him to get over what ever chumps are tossed his way

      • Zombie

I wanna play this with Mutagenic Growths now.

        • Happy The Cat

well I was gonna say Zada and her combos to just make way too many wolfs but that combo might be too slow for standard

        • Tragic

Agreed. That would be a good combat trick against burn. They go to bolt him on T3 when you play him, you get a 2/2, then you pay 2 life to MG on him, saving him from the bolt, and once again giving you a 2/2. That’ll give you 3 2/2 wolves in one turn. Just awesome.

  • Jazzyboy1

My only problem with this is that it’s not a Werewolf, so it’s not affected by Terror of Kruin Pass or Full Moon’s Rise, both of which are really good in werewolf decks.

Other than that, it is amazing. Oh and it is affected by Wren’s Run Packmaster and Master of the Wild Hunt, so that’s cool I guess.

    • Daniel Sarabia Viera

exactly, change useless trample for flash and can be really good.

    • Eric Barton

If he was a Werewolf wouldn’t he transform and if he did wouldn’t that take a turn to activate? He will replace Wolfir Avenger in modern decks of Werewolves.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

        Is that a thing?

        • Eric Barton

It’s fringe play. Nothing at all competitive, but it’s fun and funny to see it win against decks that are competitive.

    • Hedronal

What do you do to fit Wren’s Run Packmaster in? Champion an Elf is tough to get around.

  • Eric Barton

    Modern: Setessan Tactics

  • h2opolo2903

Would this ability stack if I had 2 of them out?

    • h2opolo2903

because this could make modern coco werewolf a thing

    • That Guy

  • Scott Waitforit Batchelor

Extremely flavourful with Parallel Lives. It’s raining wolves!

    • Tragic

I can only imagine trolling a burn deck by tapping out to play this turn 3, they go to Lightning Bolt it giving me a 2/2, then I surprise Mutagenic growth by paying two life and targeting him. It survives the burn and I get ANOTHER 2/2 wolf from my spell. Tables would be flipped.

    • Blahblahblahbla

      Hallelujah it’s raining wolves.

  • Ryū

Wow, I guess Wolfir do still exist.

    • Hedronal

I knew it. Knew in this case more means hoped for though.

  • Happy The Cat

    Precurser Golem, Artificial Evolution, Zenograft.
guys I might be on to something

  • John Doan

I like how if the opponent tries to remove it or another wolf or werewolf, you get a token in the process

  • Cullen Straut

This plus zada hedron grinder. Standard combo deck. Cards like slip through space and expedite mean your gonna be drawing a lot of cards.

  • Aleczander117

    What happened to the wolfir?

    • Rœkja

One of the recent Magic Story articles seemed to hint that the Cursemute was broken or corrupted when Avacyn went mad. The story shows a man that had been completely cured of lycanthropy waking up one morning to find his family all dead and his house destroyed before being slain by an angel.

It would appear that a certain group of Wolfir were able to retain their new forms. Perhaps they have some magical trait that allowed them to, or maybe just through willpower. Now that I think about it, maybe they are a group of Wolfir that “belong” to Sigarda and she was able to keep them in their current form. It would make sense. The Wolfirs’ new purpose was to protect humans, and now Sigarda is the leader of any angels still trying to do so.

I just hope that the way this card is named, Silverfur Partisan, means there are other Silverfur cards for us.

  • yolksoup

Oh my, is this the Thunderbreak Wolf?

  • Eric Barton

I can understand WHY they didn’t buff it to a 3/3 with the same stats and abilities. With Arlinn she’d be a 5/5 Trample, Vigilance with Haste. That’d be super broken. 4/4 is a lot better ofc. :D

  • JLawsl

Seems like there is a set of 3 drop rares for each color around this size. The red and blue rare haven’t been spoiled yet, but look at Bygone Bishop, this and Diregraf Colossus. I have a feeling that there are going to be 2 more 2/2, 3/2, 2/3 rares coming out for 3 mana that produce some kind of token effect for blue and red.

  • Rubz

Ooooo please tell me they’re bringing back heroic!?

    • Jonathan Mueller

That’s the closest thing to Heroic you’ll probably see for a long time.

  • Antares

I’m hoping (honestly, against hope) that there will be more “Silverfur” wolfirs. I really wanted to see more of those guys in Shadows. :(

Would have been awesome to see some in R or W, particularly (even if Green was thrown into the casting cost)

  • Atarka Effreet

So THAT’S what happened to the wolfir!!

    • Hedronal

The ones that didn’t have the cursemute run out on them, yes. Given that a human that had had their lycanthropy removed got it back, it seems fair to assume that the wolfir are mostly gone, hence the flavor text of this.
