Slumbering Dragon

  • Color: Red
  • Type: Creature - Dragon
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Set:

Flying

Slumbering Dragon can’t attack or block unless it has five or more +1/+1 counters on it.

Whenever a creature attacks you or a planeswalker you control, put a +1/+1 counter on Slumbering Dragon.

Nice card against weenie rush…at least if they don’t have some kind of removal at the ready.

So when does it get the +1/+1 counters? when your opponent declares attackers?
and what if you block one of them does it still get that counter?

well from my reading of the cards, heres what happens.

your opponent declares that he is attacking with five 1/1 humans. your dragon gets 5 counters on it as a state based action/trigger, you then announce blockers (meaning the dragon could block).

to back up my statement. the card says ‘whenever a creature attacks you or a plainswalker you control’, not ‘whenever it deals combat damage’. this means that no damage must actually be dealt, and blockers are not declared untill after the counters are placed on sleeping dragon, does this sound correct?
