+1: Choose up to two target creatures. Until your next turn, whenever either of those creatures deals combat damage, you draw a card.

-2: Tap up to two target nonland permanents. They don’t untap during their controller’s next untap step.

-7: Draw three cards. You get an emblem with “You may cast nonland cards from your hand without paying their mana costs.”

  • Wildspeaker

Ultimate easily in the top 10 of all time, comparable to Ugin or even Liliana Vess

    • Gerald Homme

And it’s immediately usable off of Doubling season. Just bonkers.

      • Daniel Kaine Allen

doubling season, tamiyo ult, enter the infinite, win!!

        • Asghaad

doubling season makes almost any walker “i win” card – which means it should really be banned

          • Daniel Kaine Allen

Eh not really, the only couple of cards that are like that are hard to come by, or in the case of mind sculptor, banned.

          • eltratzo

Just a lsiting of walkers that instantly ult with season:

            Ajani
Goldmane: meh not that gamewinny although two avatars are nice,
Steadfast: should be pretty hard to lose through that though certainly not impossible
Caller of the pride: a gazillion tokens does not intantly a won game make
Mentor of heroes: 100 life are 100 life are 100 life

            Chandra
Ablaze: depends on your deck but certainly can win you the game
Flamecaller: why not use blasphemous act for this ^^
Pyromaster: depends on your deck again
            Firebrand: meh

Dack: well yeah, depends on your deck but this should equal a won match

            Else:
Tirel: tokendecks win of this. otherwise, meh
            Knight errant: should win
Suns champion: good but not necessarily winning

Freya: strong but not immedeatly deadly

            Garruk
Wildspeaker: its an overrun. overruns win games.
Apex predator: same as wildspeaker but weaker in multiplayer
Caller: stronk but as is mostly the case deck and even hand dependant
Primal hunter: mass tokens agin( same as above)

Gideon: (he is wierd i’ll coun’t none of him for this)

            Jace:
Architect of thought: getting the strongest cards of opponents can be gamewinning but doesn’t have to be
Memory adept: can be strong but overall…. meh
Guildpact: depends on the board. if you’re not horribly behind you should win
Unraveller: people have complined on this very site about his interaction with the season (and rule of law for the full lock)

Karn: has no benifit to instant ulting

Both kioras make a strong argument for a won game. still “just” an armada of big tokens with bonus

Koth: depends on your deck: more mountains more win

            Lili:
            Dark realms: more black mana!
Veil: should loose that player the game
Vess: usually a win in edh

Nahiri: this ult is a modern wincon so…yeah.

Narset: um yeah. seems gamewinning against most decks.

            Bolas: rip opponent

Nixilis: not that fast. but should be hard to win with that on you.

            Ral: depends on your luck.

            Sarkhan:
Unbroken: depends on your dragons. but dragonstorm seems like a good way to win
            Vol: mass tokens
            Dragonspeaker: meh

            Sorin:
Markov: mindslavering is strong and in multiplayer should kill at least one person even without recursion
            Nemesis: mass tokens
Lord of innistrad: stronk but not necessarily gamewinning
Solemn visitor: takes ages but should win against most decks if you just turtle

Tamiyo: should win (if only through infinite cyclonic rifts)

Teferi depending on your deck somewhere between irrelevant and game is over

Tezzeret: both are heaviliy deckdependent wit the agent’s being stronger

            Ugin: should win

            Vraska: meh

            Xenagos: stronk

in summary: quite a of them are indeed ” win” cards in decks that want to play both them and the season. however many just fit into completely different decks than the season and some of the most backbreaking ultis cant be reached just with one season (e.g. sculptor who btw is only banned in modern; a format where the season has next to no impact). doubling season is a really strong card but I don’t think it is really banworthy

          • Evan Dischinger

In competitive edh there are far easier ways to combo off.

      • eltratzo

that is true of about half of all walkers. quite a few of them also almost certainly winning you the game after that.

    • Asghaad

i dont know, comparing it to her old version, this one feels kinda “meh” and its complicated with colors

old one had protection on +1 and could draw you far more cards than mere 2-4 with requisite of those creatures getting through

i run Tamiyo in my Niv-Mizzet EDH deck and even if this was mono- blue id still keep the old one

      • Evan Dischinger

The creatures don’t have to get through they can just be blocked.

  • George Zamyatin

Oh sweet tamiyo now my day will be filled with sugar and candy cane dreams

  • Tim Jenson

    …Why white?

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      Why not?

      • Charles-David Forest-Le Noir

Because none of it’s abilities are white related?

        • Mr.Mayhem631

          Tapping stuff is white.

          • Charles-David Forest-Le Noir

It’s also blue… much more blue I think. She could have easily been Simic.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            Probably power reduction.

        • Steven Wallace

tapping down and not untapping is solidly blue, its a ice related mechanic which is blue, icefall regant for example.

There is NO reason for her to be white, and minimal reason, if any, for green.

    • MrAptronym

She is associated with order pretty well in lore. Mechanically, tapping down is shared with white.

  • Edward

3 color Tamiyo? I didn’t know i wanted it until now

  • Happy The Cat

one of the few planeswalkers that players will want to focus ulting with
Omniscience with Concentrate stapled together for the cost of four mana is great

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      Of the few?
Like half of all Planeswalkers have win-the-game ults.

      • Happy The Cat

but none of them are focused to be used.
how often does your ashiok or your chandras or your elspeths or your jaces ult? most all pws have game winning ults yes, but most of them people don’t ever get to use cause they have to give up so much value or effectiveness to ult, this can go into a bant aggro/midrange that will already have so much pressure and give them extra draws and easly ult from behind the lines.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

          So can Jace AOT.
          So can Elspeth KE.
And for walkers with good ults that can easily happen “behind the lines”, Sorin LOI, Nahiri TH, and Elspeth SC.

          • Happy The Cat

jace AoT spent went -2,-2 almost every time he was cast in standard and will still do that if an opponent can pressure him at all.
Knight-Errant has no minus ability besides her ult so people really have no option but to rush her ult out.
lord of Inni’s ult is only good for breaking stalemates other wise he is building your board with this tokens or emblems.
nahiri rarely sees play in standard and even more rare does she get to ult when she does, mostly because she is better off using her -2 to just kill stuff.
champion of the sun spent most of her time spawning tokens and clearing the board, the only deck she ulted against was the mirror so her tokens could beat the enemy tokens.
also I said of the few and you bring me five of the 74 as an argument, of which three rarely ult and two that are in the runnings pro best planeswalker of all time.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

I’m just saying she isn’t really unique.

        • eltratzo

she is also in the (quite large) “instantly ults with doubling season” club ^^

  • MrAptronym

I still was waishing for a mono-U tamiyo, but I am pretty happy with this Tamiyo. I certainly waited years for it. Art is great, cost is fair. She is not the strongest PW around but I like her. Her + is conditional, but very powerful as well. Oddly she seems to be pushing an agressive deck? Sad she doesn’t fit in my moonfolk EDH deck, but I need to build something around her.

    • That Guy

I mostly agree with you but her +1 isn’t really that conditional though. You can use it on opponents’ creatures and the creatures only have to deal combat damage rather than combat damage to a player like most similar abilities. It’s a really powerful ability.

      • MrAptronym

I should have said “A little conditional”. I don’t mean to imply it is bad, it’s incredibly powerful, (as it should be with her cost) but its power will depend at least a bit on the boardstate. I can’t say for sure how it will play, I expect it to be very good, but there are situations where it is more or less good. Very rarely will it be not useful.

    • Zombie

Her +1 is only conditional in the sense that it relies on the creatures attacking or blocking.

If you target two creatures, either they never attack or block or you’re drawing cards.

In a sense it’s a rehash of the Punisher mechanic, except for the fact that, like Vexing Devil, it’s actually good.

      • MrAptronym

Maybe I should have just said “Its utility will depend on the boardstate, but will generally be very good” because I think people are taking my conditional statement to mean its not good, or it will often be dead. I just mean that the extent of its utility depends on the board.

I am not sure I’d quite say its a punisher mechanic, though it can sometimes be used like that. It definitely always makes interesting decisions though. So that is a win in my book, I like planeswalkers that make you think a little.

  • Colin

I am so excited about this card because Tamiyo is my favorite planeswalker and Bant is my favorite color combination. I can’t wait to get this I imagine I will be playing it for a while.

  • Fred Weasley

I’m pretty sure she’s going to make the best Standard deck ever for me.

  • Animar, Elemental Master

This is pretty interesting since we all know we’re getting Liliana for sure, that means that we’ll be getting a 6-PW card block, which is pretty cool.

  • That Guy

I love how her +1 can be used on opponents’ creatures, and the creatures only have to deal combat damage rather than combat damage to a player like most similar abilities. It’s sorta like she has 2 protective abilities because it deters them from attacking with 2 creatures as well as being able to tap down 2 things. She also has a game ending ult to boot. I love this card and I can see this seeing tons of play in standard, and WILL be played in edh because doubling season is a thing.

    • MrAptronym

I am imagining all those times when my opponent and I have both had big creatures that would bounce off each other, and how sweet that +1 would have been at that moment.

  • Derek Mullins

Yeeeeeeees! We have a Bant walker!

    • Derek Mullins

Also on that note, she did end up being at least ug

  • Azerea97

Turn 1: 1-drop creature. Turn 2: Cryptolith Rite, tap the creature to summon another 1-drop creature. Turn 3: Gilder Bairn and a 2-drop creature if you want. Turn 4: Tamiyo, tap the Gilder Bairn and 2 other creatures for the mana to activate Gilder Bairn’s ability which doubles the counters on Tamiyo, then ult immediately. Turn 5: win the game.

    • Matt86

That is, by far, the most constricted, unnecessary, weak, slow combo win I’ve read about in quite sometime:
To summarize: You need 4 lands, a rite, two creatures, a Gilder Bairn, and Tamyo for it. Until turn four, meaning you’ll draw three to four cards, making for an immediate card pool of 8 to 11 cards, depending on whether you are on the draw or on the play and how many mulligans you take (I’d say that deck would see itself starting with 5 cards more often than not), and you need 9 cards of those 8-11 cards to be specific. Wanna do the math?

Edit: AND you need full Bant domain until turn 4, not impossible, but a hindrance in some cases.

Edit²: AND you need to actually place something in your deck that’ll win you the game, and hope it’s amongst those 3 cards Tamyo draws, since those will be the only cards you’ll have by then.

Edit ³: AND then you’ll have to survive whatever your opponent did until turn 5 with you letting him set up just the way you did.

Edit 4: AND one removal shoots this combination to hell… I probably should’ve started with that, but I didn’t want to treat your combo to a ‘meh, dies to doom blade’ end…

      • Azerea97

I’m aware it’s weak and unlikely, I just said it’s possible to do.

      • Azerea97

It’s just a more realistic approach to an instant ult off of her for people playing on budget that can’t afford a Doubling Season like everyone else is suggesting.

    • Ortik

What is it you plan to cast with the emblem when your entire deck is maxed with 1 drops, rites, and enablers for her

  • Arcus Diabolus

Ok, I finally found a reason to splash blue in my Angel deck. Bant, here I come!

    • Matt86

So you were playing a white and green angel-themed deck? Wow, that’s… ignoring some nifty black cards… though it’s creative, I like it

      • Arcus Diabolus

theres certainly some black angels I’d like to run, like Angel of Despair and some others, but yea, its been white green with a splash of red for a while now.

  • BalthasarH.

The Ults of the old and new Tamiyo work really well together. One makes all spells in hand free and the other recurs them = infinit card advantage.

    • Julna Buras

Please stop making me scream, my vocal chords have been strained enough by the terrifying emerge cards.

    • Evan Dischinger

Ulting either or is enough to close out most games.

  • Julna Buras

Noooooooooooooooooo I was hoping to replace the Narsets in my Esper control with the new Tamiyo. *sigh* Oh well. Let’s hope that the new Liliana is serviceable.
Of course, regardless of the fact that I can’t use her, I’m still really terrified of having to play against this. With Oath of Nissa as a fairly well-used card, she’ll be really easy to cast, and that three-turn ult will be absolutely impossible to deal with.

    • Jacob Bachand

Totally agree. Was praying for her to be U, UW or Esper (my favorite Shard). I guess you and I will have to Anguish Unmaking or Ruinous Path her, not play her :)

      • Julna Buras

With all her talk about order and promises being kept I knew she was going to be white, but the green feels really out of place on a planeswalker so focused on knowledge and research. She doesn’t feel like the kind of character to let nature get the better of her.

        • Hedronal

Green very much values insight. It draws cards a lot, for a non-blue color.

        • Evan Dischinger

Think about how she studies nature I guess.

  • Scathain

That’s one neat +1, then ult for concentrate + omniscience sounds awesome. I probably wouldn’t use the -2 all that much, but it doesn’t look bad either. Also, bant is back, apparently.

    • Minizem

The -2 offers a good way to protect her if necessary. Other than that, it probably will just slow down that omniscience emblem.

    • Jacob Bachand

Back? It’s been OP for months (Bant CoCo, Bant Humans with and without Displacer etc)

  • Ryū

    Tamiyo confirmed coolest planeswalker.

  • I.R.Shnow

First ability lets you draw UP to 2 cards, right?

    • roymacIII

Easily up to four if they both have double strike. Through shenanigans, you could make that eight by having something that gives you two combat phases.

      • MrAptronym

Well it works on their turn too, I’d say max without adding phases or in multiplayer would be using it on two vigilant doublestrikers then getting attacked and blocking with both of them for 8. alternatively you could use it on their doublestrikers and depending on their choices draw up to 8 as well.

      • Jacob Bachand

Don’t forget it stays in effect until your next turn, so blocking on the opponents turn draws you card as well

      • I.R.Shnow

        omg, the possibilities…

  • miguel

The doubling season planeswalker deck would add her , a four mana omniscience instantly by the doubled counters and still gives her 1 counter left to stay on the board! That’s crazy!

  • Sulleshrub

Wizards why did you give Bant more fuel?

    • Arcus Diabolus

Bant really hasn’t been getting anything since Alara, tbh. They’ve only recently started getting good cards. I would more ask, why Wizards giving eldrazi more fuel?

  • Dominic Ng

What is the white in her ability? All of them are blue and only the +1 can be argued to be also green

    • Minizem

tapping things is a blue/white thing.

  • Ben

    -crying- WHY WIZARDS WHY! My Narset superfriends is crying cause it wants her so bad but she has green ;_;

    • Minizem

I know your pain. lik if u cri erytim.

    • Kevin Johnstone

Then you can add oath of Nissa and its not an issue… youd actually be able to play much better mana as well, youd get the value of the oath ETB trigger.

      • Depends whether or not it is an EDH deck.

      • Evan Dischinger

But, but, oath of nissa is green.

      • Ben

This is EDH. Narset is general

    • Jacob Bachand

Testify. Stupid green… like it needed more power… and draws more cards then Blue these days. I would kill for this walker in Esper or UW.

  • Melissa Juice

Incredible. I think Tamiyo has replaced Kiora as my favorite planeswalker.

Her +1 is one the most flavorful PW abilities I’ve ever seen.

    • Jonathan Mueller

      It sure is powerful.

Care to explain the flavor behind it?
Is it about CLUEing in Jace and someone else about the Eldrazi?

Or wait, this is more about observing combat, isn’t it? Since one doesn’t have to control those creatures.

      • Melissa Juice

My interpretation is that Tamiyo is studying the two creatures. If they attack, she learns.

        :)

    • Dr. Burn Crow

I’m not complaining because I think this adds to the cool factor of Tamiyo, but how does being Bant fit into her character? She’s pretty much the most true blue character out there, so the fact she’s got white and green surprised me.

      • Kahai

She is greatly into the natural world (Green). She is also into order and control of stories and their power. (White).

Her first ability deals directly with creatures with a green thing. Her second ability is very white, it’s about controlling that which is around her. Her third ability is two blue spells. Any draw three and Omniscience.

She is a work of art. :3

        • Dr. Burn Crow

When I saw her abilities, I just kept seeing +1 as UW, first – as straight blue, and her ult as straight blue in the highest, but I can see what you mean.
In any case, I guess I’ll have to throw together a Bant EDH, which makes me nervous, because I’ve never successfully ran Bant. Ever.

          • Kahai

Might i suggest our lady Bird General on High, Deveri? :3

I made my version of a Deveri deck as a sort of special forces bant army/squad. Where someone like Roon of the Hidden Realm is a bomb to totally wiped out a battlefield, and Rafiq of the Many is just a regular Bant General, I play Deveri like a precision tool. She is outfitted with just the right tech and creatures to hose whatever problem comes up.

Though i always try to make themed Commander decks…

      • Melissa Juice

It surprised me too. I really have no idea, and would have preferred mono blue.

        *ahemdownwithjace)*

  • BusinessmanGinger

Respect for Tamiyo, really like her as the third tri colored planeswalker but…..Lili…where did you goooo my lovely? XD

  • Blahblahblahbla

This fits so perfectly into my Derevi deck for maximum redundancy and at 4 mana… +1 acts as a mini Coastal Piracy, -2 is a mini Winter Orb, ult is like an Alluren+. So pleased with this card..

    • Jonathan Mueller

Her +1 can actually be far better than Coastal Piracy.

You don’t have to deal combat damage to a player, AND it lasts until your next turn. So if your opponent attacks during his turn, you can even use the ability to block for card advantage.

Btw, there is a card that does “Alluren+” – Omniscience ;)

  • Corey Reks Anderson

i might have to build roon again for this

    • Corey Reks Anderson

      also tamiyo, poon researcher

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

White? Tch…. oh wait, oath of nissa is a thing. nvm xD

  • Zombie

If you use her +1 on two vigilance/double strike creatures, and your opponent attacks the following turn, her +1 reads: Draw 8 cards. Also Omniscience as an ultimate ability is neat.

There is an insane amount of value packed into a single card here. And this is a card that Bant/Counter Cat in Modern has needed for a long time, a valuable 4-drop in their colors that can provide mid-to-late game advantage when they’re about to putter out.

    You heard me. Modern.

    Imagine this curve:

Noble Hierarch T1, Rhox War Monk or some other fat 3-drop T2, Tamiyo, Field Research T3.

Oh man that feels good just looking at it.

Also keep in mind her +1 can target any viable creature, not just your own, and it’s any damage, not just player damage.

    • Geddon

Well, assuming the double-strike doesn’t kill the creatures on the first swing.

    • Nolly

I really like how fast her ultimate comes up and how she can keep your hand full.
That +1 is also able to act as both a card advantage generator and a deterrent to attacking. I like.

      • Zombie

Yep it’s a multipurpose ability which leads me to lean towards her being playable in Modern.

Modern playability requires efficiency above all else.

    • Jonathan Mueller

Good point, her +1 is incredibly good with vigilance and/or double strike creatures.
In the right constructed deck, that alone will provide incredible card advantage, albeit somewhat conditional.

If things turn out well, it’ll be a Concentrate/Harmonize after combat, as well as each turn thereafter until she is killed.
And if she isn’t, well… your opponent will be especially screwed.

»Also Omniscience as an ultimate ability is neat.«
not just Omniscience, but Omniscience with Concentrate/Ancestral Recall to get you rolling.

    • Arcus Diabolus

you act as though Modern isn’t a well played format. I would argue its played more than standard, and for good reason.

      • Nolly

You can argue that as much as you want, but statistics will always show standard is more played.
        Jus’ sayin.

        • Arcus Diabolus

Not sure why… So much more expensive to play month to month. Sure modern is more expensive as a one time payment, but standard is easily a constant money sink.

          • Nolly

“Standard” isn’t just the top tier tournaments and pro-tours. Its also the FNMs, the people who play every now and again, the invisible demographics…
I myself only spend 5 bucks every week with a deck full of super expensive cards I pulled out of packs from FNM winnings.
Standard is what you make it.

          • Evan Dischinger

Until your deck gets banned, never forgive never forget, birthing pod.

      • Zombie

Standard is far and away the most popular Magic format.

Modern has a large playerbase yes, but not as large as Standard’s.

I think Standard is stupid and a waste of money, but my opinion doesn’t change fact.

    • Nanya

      Silverblade Paladin+Akroma and this +1?

IDK, just throwing stuff out there.

Never used Bant, would have to work something.

  • Julna Buras

Is it just me, or is Eldritch Moon giving a lot more potential Modern staples than other sets have given?

    • Zombie

Staple is the wrong word. That implies they would instantly see a massive amount of play in numerous decks consistently, which almost none of them will. Certainly not in Tier 1 archetypes.

“Potentially modern playable cards” is more accurate.

      • Julna Buras

Thanks for the clarification. Modern isn’t a format I know as much about.

        • Zombie

No problem. All things considered it’s very hard for cards to break out of Standard/Casual into Constructed Non-Rotating formats like Modern, Legacy, Vintage, etc.

You always have to consider the existing power levels of cards already in the format and what the metas look like when evaluating new cards and compare the value of those new cards to pre-existing, established cards and decks.

As far as staples go, what I’d consider Modern “staples” would be things like Tarmogoyf, Dark Confidant, Goblin Guide, Snapcaster Mage, Lightning Bolt, etc…. Cards that either define almost every deck in a single archetype (Goblin Guide) or are prominent cards throughout the entire format (Lightning Bolt).

It’s very hard for a brand new card to suddenly jump to that level of prominence. And nowadays when a card is that good either it’s very niche (Monastery Swiftspear) or it’s good enough to require a banning, see: Deathrite Shaman, Dig Through Time, Treasure Cruise.

  • Nanya

    Derevi (Bird Wizard) likes?

    • Ashenmoor

      BIRD WIZARD

    • Kahai

Yes she does. She does a lot. :3

      • Nanya

Now I need to make a Bant Wizard control deck.

  • Nolly

Well. Thought she’d be either blue green or blue white.
Did not expect her to be the best of both worlds.

    • Matt86

Well, she could be UW with those abilities, or mono blue, but then, we REALLY don’t want UW or U or Esper control decks to blow everything to sh** for 2 years… The G mana is more of a control prevention tool as far as I’m concerned

      • Jacob Bachand

Unfortunately you are correct. Green needed more power lol. Because you know how OP UW and Esper Control have been recently :P
Tamiyo is awesome but why add the green *cry*

        • Matt86

It’s not about recently, it’s about the fact that UW and Esper, or UB, can get OP and any time given the right keypieces, and normally, when a control deck gets OP, it breaks standard because we know most competitive magic players prefer control over, well, actual real interaction with your opponent.
Tamyo would be OP if not for the three colours. Plus, making her Bant places her solely against the two main ‘madness colours’ of Innistrad, Black and Red. She’s all but mad, so to speak.

    • Jonathan Mueller

Not sure if that’s the best of both worlds, but I also think none of us expected her to be tri-color.

      • Nolly

I think its their new cycle they’re doing, since they did a walker in every two-color combo, now they’re going to find places to put one in every wedge combo.

        • Matt86

          Bant isn’t a wedge, it’s a shard.
Shards: Bant, Esper, Naya, Jund, Grixis
Wedges: Abzan, Jeskai, Mardu, Temur, Sultai

          Otherwise, you are right

          • Nolly

Wedges are the term used for three-color combos.

          • Bige Boiy

            no.

          • Nolly

Okay, I guess everyone I’ve ever heard use wedge, off and on this website, on wiki’s around the web, and in real life, is wrong. Thank’s for letting me know, random internet person!

          • Bige Boiy

Stunning that you’ve only interacted with wrong people, fellow random internet person.

          • Julian Heske

Bant is a shard, not a wedge. It is not hard to verify. Just google it.

          • colin

Shards are named after the Shards of Alara block. Wedges are the ones leftover. Look it up. Maybe look it up first next time before posting something that makes you look so misinformed.

          • Zombie

” I guess everyone I’ve ever heard use wedge, off and on this website, on wiki’s around the web, and in real life, is wrong.”

            They are.

Shards = Esper, Bant, Grixis, Jund, Naya

Wedges = Raka (Jeskai), Ceta (Temur), Dega (Mardu), Necra (Abzan), Ana (Sultai)

          • Tamiyo

Maybe you should do some field research yourself, hmmm?

          • Hedronal

They actually are wrong though. A color with its enemies is a wedge, (or uncommonly a clan), while a color with its allies is an arc (more commonly a shard).

          • Matt86

Sorry for the short reply, but: Nope.

    • Asghaad

her being tri-collor means that her 4 mana cost requires much more convoluted manabase and restricts her usability in EDH ( hell are there even any good commanders in this combination ? – seriously i dont know, can someone point some out :) )

      • Nolly

Derevi, Roon, that one guy who has double strike and exalted whose name slips my mind and im too lazy to look up..

        • Nolly

Rafiq of the Many, that was it.

          • Zombie

There’s also Angus, Jenara, Arcades, Ragnar, Rubinia, and Treva.

Although Ragnar are Treva aren’t what I’d call “good”.

          • Evan Dischinger

Also the five color superfriends decks, and our upcoming 4c ones.

        • Hedronal

Plus any with more colors just for color identity.

  • Dave

Yesss, love 3 colour walkers. More!

  • Bige Boiy

Wow! Very good example of Bant characterization in the lore articles this set, but I hadn’t even considered they’d actually do it.
Very playable in the standard superfriends deck with Oath of Nissa. Also a good card in any and all bant commander decks, but I’m not so sure there’s a home for her in modern.

  • kmk888

This is a rock solid magic card. She’s really busted with creatures on your side of the board, but even without them she represents cards or time, whichever you need more. She’s tailor made for the creature heavy environment of Standard, although the mana (without Oath of Nissa) may be difficult to achieve and currently most Bant decks run Collected Company so you have to minimize the amount of noncreature spells you use. She’s also (similar to most other planeswalkers) not great against haste creatures if we get a lot of those. The upside of this card is phenomenal though and probably worth the effort.

  • Exyrea

Steaksauce Princess Pillowfort got a fantastic new edition today.

  • ashton

if 3 color walkers are going to be a regular thing I can’t wait until jeskai narset

    • Derek Mullins

I still wish that was what they did…

    • wisdomseyes

even if this was going to be a cycle, it would be shards not wedges. It is not likely, though.

      • Nolly

        They already did wedge Sarkhan…

        • Evan Dischinger

          That was ashtons point…

      • ashton

umm sarkhan and bolas are the only other tri-walkers. one is shards and the other is wedge. we could get any combo of tri-walkers in the future

    • Hedronal

I almost hope not too regular, to keep it special.

  • Brian Schmidt

Pseudo Tap Down for +1 is pretty awesome. But, and I only hear and see what people play, did Bant need another card for their deck? All I hear about is Bant Tokens or CoCo Decks that are doing amazing. This thing is just bonkers. The decks in place now can protect her the attrition so she can get to the ultimate which is bonkers as well. Great card.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Well this is not what I had imagined for this. It’s good, I just never expected Bant Tamiyo.

  • Kevan Kramer

I expected a bant Tamiyo since Magic Duels, because the Jace and Tamiyo deck was a bant deck

  • Bostorket

    It’sa-mee, Bantiyo!

  • Kevan Kramer

    Quoted from MaRo’s Tumblr,
“She’s Bant so we can print her. In order to get a sixth planeswalker in the block, we had to make something more narrow to not cause developmental problems.

So the option was to print her at three colors or not print her. Once you look at what three colors she is, Bant (Blue/White/Green) was obvious. She’s not Black or Red. She’s orderly and a scientist that studies natural phenomenon (mostly moons and their effects).

Her card was designed to be something centered in Blue but that touched upon overlaps with White and Green.” So know you all know why she is bant.

  • Son Goku

She’s cheap, comes in the three colors best suited to protect a Planeswalker, and has a great trio of abilities. This card is going to make some waves.

  • Robert FakeLastName

so doubling season…. she lives after ulting right away…

    • Happy The Cat

to make matters worse she’s already green, meaning if you see her anywhere outside of standard someone’s having Seasons.

  • Tragic

Funny how well her ultimate goes with Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. If you were playing a deck based around doubling season, you could cast Sage, Ult her, cast Researcher next turn, Ult her, then never have to worry about paying for or losing anything from your hand.

Even without the doubling season, though, the second abilities on each card also synergize well with eachother. Honestly, I could see the combo hitting off in a Bant control schema. It’s much easier to pull off than, say, Omniscience.

  • xermaster123

The Plus is really good, can be played aggressively or defensively, the minus is really good also, not sure how good though. I reckon this will see play as a 2 of in coralhelm bant, and definitely in standard.

  • Bige Boiy

The abilities are green/blue, white/blue and mono-blue, respectively. She would have been hybrid if this set had hybrid mana.

    • Bige Boiy

that being said, Tamiyo (the character) is most definitely simic.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

She’s Bant, that’s part of the reason her card here is.
On a separate note, this set could use hybrid mana.
She’s three colored because it makes her harder to cast and fits her character.

  • Gurra_Mannen

Just a curious standard player asking, what happens if you have the ult emblem and cast lilliana’s indignation? Like it’s not a great combo, splashing in black, but I’m just curious.

    • Happy The Cat

you still have to pay mana for X spells which is why this says may.you can cast Indignation but X will be zero

    • Gurra_Mannen

EDIT: My question is, will you be able to cast indignation for how much you want?

      • MithosFall

You can either choose to cast it for free (in which X = 0), or you can cast it normally.

        • Gurra_Mannen

And by normally you mean actually paying the mana cost?

          • Ben Peterson

            Yes.

    • Happy The Cat

you still have to pay mana for X spells which is why this says may.you can cast Indignation but X will be zero

    • Gareth Martin

107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”

  • Jacob Kodicovic

I wouldn’t say that. She’s very strong, but she’s not Mind Sculptor levels of broken

    • Chaospyke

Not for a lack of trying though..

  • Chaospyke

I don’t understand why she is white, Flavor wise or mechanics wise.

I can understand the green now, because green wants to leave things in their natural state and she just wants to watch innistrad as opposed to helping it.

    • Devon Ronald MacInnis

She would be to strong GU plus we already have a well established GU walker, might as well get the third 3 colour Walker.

    • Deadly Berry

Agreed, most unnecessary color on a planeswalker ever.

    • Dominic Ng

Flavorwise, she never used the forbidden story to save Jace when facing Avacyn. That could be some sort of responsibility/ code of honor/ self restraint, I guess.

  • Combomakeur

    Enter The Infinite?

  • Deadly Berry

The +1 is probably the best creature-friendly +ability a planeswalker has ever shown, if you pick the right creatures you can draw 4 cards per use, either vigilance (because the effect lasts until your next turn) or double strike (because the effect procs whenever the creature deals combat damage) or both to draw more, but that’s not very likely. The -2 is great as well, disable two nonland permanents? yes please! Even better now when so many things trigger on cast, tapping them for a while could be more helpful rather than bouncing them.

The last ability is basically Omniscience and has perfect sinergy with all the cards you drew before (easy to activate too, just -7). This Tamiyo is amazing and fits any type of deck as long as you use the right creatures.

    • Hedronal

Not just basically Omniscience, it’s that with Ancestral Recall stapled on. It’s also an ultimate that I would have absolutely no problem sacrificing the planeswalker for, which is rare.

      • Deadly Berry

        yea, that too!

      • silverhawk100

First Tamiyo was like that too.

        • Arcus Diabolus

Still would like to keep her for that beautiful +1 tho.

I now have a reason to pull Aurelia shenanigans in angel deck when she would normally be out classed by golden age Gisela. (I miss her damn it.) Now I can run both!

  • BalthasarH.

So if I use her +1 on my opponents “Incited Rabble” and block with 2+ creatures or if I use it on my “Watcher In the Web” and block 2+ of my opponents creatures do I draw 1 or 2+ cards?
Would it change if I block with X/1 Creature in the first case or if “Watcher In the Web” had deathtouch in the secound case?

    • Hedronal

A creature only deals combat damage once per damage step, regardless of how many things it’s dealing damage to. That ability would only trigger twice in one turn for the same creature if it had double strike, or there was an additional combat step.

      • David Meyers

Exception would be double strike. That would trigger it twice

        • Hedronal

Once in the first strike damage step, and once in the regular damage step, so my statement stands.

  • European Nightmare

Field Researcher!?!?!? Whoa, such an creative and original name. Lame excuse to make her Bant

    • Mr.Mayhem631

She’s Bant because the character is Bant.

      • SquirePath

I completely disagree, in the lore she only chronicles what happens to other planes. Nothing about that is green.

She is Blue/White at most. That said, I don’t really care what colors she is. I’m just glad she’s back. lol

        • Gareth Martin

When her hands were inside a mutant werewolf counting how many extra organs it had I thought “simic”.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

She believes in letting things take their course without interfering. That is very green.

    • MrAptronym

I wanted a mono-U tamiyo as much as anyone… but ‘Field scholar’ is seriously how she was described in the little blurb about her for avacyn restored.

    • Lord Bearington

Her personality in the stories felt off-blue, so I believe she is probably bant colored but centered on blue and we’ll see what how much of the other colors she reflects in the story.

  • Spartica7

My Bant Superfriends deck is finally complete!

  • woooow. doubling season and rings of brighthearth

  • manapants

    supply/demand is bant

  • silverhawk100

I’m probably overthinking this, but her +1: if both creatures connect do you draw 2 or only 1? Because it sounds pretty darn close to Draw 1.

    • Arcus Diabolus

      Thanks, now I’m overthinking this…

I’m pretty sure that means at each separate damage calculation step. So you might be right, however you should be able to abuse this with double strike and additional combat steps.

      • xermaster123

I’m pretty sure you draw 2 from 2 creatures attacking, otherwise it would get you two if one of the creatures has first strike.

      • CG1248

I had the same question, if either one deals damage you draw 1 card. Also double strike, vigilance on tough creatures, untap tricks, additionnal combat and first strike damage + normal combat damage. A lot of options!

    • Dewill

due to the wording i assume its only one card if either of those creatures deals damage. Max of one card but two chances. But since it is til your next turn if those attacking creatures have vigilance and you block then you can have the draw on the opponents turn.

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      You draw two.

  • Dewill

so is wizards printing more than 5 planeswalkers in each block now? before there was always 5 but with Tamiyo that makes 5 already and I’m 99% sure Liliana is getting a print too.

    • Hedronal

Given that she’s on the key art, I assume Liliana’s in this set. That said, six planeswalkers in a block could still be an outlier case.

    • they mentioned it will depend on the storyline which i enjoy.

    • MrAptronym

Not in each block. Maro has said 5 is the default, they can break it sometimes.

    • I’AMRAKUL

Liliana has been confirmed her name is Liliana the last hope and she will be spoiled in access magic episode 3.

    • MBase

Arlinn Kord is actually the 6th, previously unplanned planeswalker. Apparently she arose out of a space R&D wanted filled mechanically, and so she wasn’t very present in the main story. So for a now we get 6 planeswalkers, but that is definitely the exception, not the rule.

  • Hedronal

I feel compelled to point out that this Tamiyo (of whom I approve as a card) does conform to the recent trend (if it can be called that) of planeswalkers. That trend of plus to draw, minus to removal(ish) is followed by the most recent printings of Jace, Nahiri, Sorin, Tamiyo and Ob Nixilis.

    • Brogan Justicar Gibbons

Her +1 is also pseudo-removal. Putting it on enemy creatures can essentially remove them from combat for a turn if your opponent isn’t willing to let you draw off them.

      • Hedronal

Stalling removal, in a similar sense to her minus but with an option for the opponent.

  • Ghorta

EDH brainstorming here…play Doubling Season, play old Tamiyo, tick her up, next turn ult her, play new Tamiyo returning old Tamiyo to hand, ult her, now you can tap everything your opponents control permanently by bouncing both Tamiyos and draw/play your whole deck for free

    • step 1: tamiyo
      step 2: tamiyo
      step 3: ???
      step 4: profit is banned

    • Mr.Mayhem631

      How are you bouncing?
When you have them both out at once one of them dies.

      • Ghorta

And blue Tamiyo gives you the emblem of “whenever a card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you may return it to your hand.”

Thus when one dies, it goes back to your hand.

    • Juha

Or you can have Liquimetal Coating and Vorel of the Hull Clade – > Play Tamiyo -> make her an artifact -> Double counters with Vorel to eight – > click-‘n-press ulti – > profit.

  • Rubz

yeah cause bant needed more help in standard

  • Fabien Joan Bernex

I feel like i’m gonna try a Bant Superfriends. Oath of Nissa, Nissa, Gideon, Tamiyo, Narset, Jace and maybe even Chandra with Oath. Yolo.

  • chad

CAN I GET A HELL YEA!!!???

    • Phoenix UNBENCHED

      Okay, one ‘Hell yea’.
      You want fries widdat?

  • p26man

Glider Bairn and some acceleration gets this ultimate turn 3.

  • Derek Niles

    wow, so good.

  • Nharzhool

I feel like this should target Karona…give it Assault Suit, Furor of the Bitten, and Lightning Greaves. CARD DRAW FOR DAAAAYS, SON!

    • MrAptronym

Is there any way you could fit in a Runes of the Deus or a Battle Mastery?

  • Jeff Cook

Doubling season gets it ult on cast

    • Derek_TheWreck

Yeah, and a lot of other good planeswalker too though: Ajani Steadfast, Chandra Nalaar, Ral Zarek, etc

      • Derek_TheWreck

        Forgot Narset
