wow… such a terrible excuse for a removal spell.
EDIT: well turns out the -1/-1 counters do not hinge on the opponent accepting it. that makes this a lot better than i had thought.

It’s also a common so it is fairly decent.

I originally got the -1/-1 counter part wrapped up with the opponent choice part. So, I thought that your opponent could discard a card to effectively negate the entire spell. The edit in my comment is me coming to the realization that it was a separate sentence.

Nice, they even made it so your opponent can’t sac the creature that got the -1/-1 counters.

And this here is why -1/-1 counters make so much sense here. They mechanically kill gods.

    • DarthinvaderIX

but this doesn’t kill any of the gods

it kills the indestructible ones. and you can see here scorpion is the one using it.

        • DarthinvaderIX

None of the gods have 3 toughness, Hazoret and the locust god each have 4 and the others have 5 or 6

          • Hedronal

Scorpion god casts this, is that much closer to killing them with -1/-1 counters with its own ability faster. This doesn’t kill gods, as I said, -1/-1 counters kill gods. Also, this gets any one of them halfway dead at least.

But you could make your opponent sacrifice one while killing another creature. Mostly the opponent doesn’t have that many creatures.

I think the venom from the wrecking ball-sized stinger crashing down on you is the least of your worries.
