• kltsurumaki

    Happy tree has gone bad

  • My1digit IQ

    Should be fun in EDH

    • kltsurumaki

      Definitely

    • Nanya

      Combined with Assault Formation. WHEE!

    • Ben

goin in doran next to tree of redemption i think yes

    • Asghaad

you have strange deffinition of fun … turning someones life total to 13 at T3 or possibly to 2 life with Sorceress Queen kinda makes the whole point of Commander format meaningless…

  • the mad seer

this+triskadekaphobia+ near instant win. someone should really make a deck about the number 13

    • eltratzo

the tree needs to stick around through one whole enemy turn with trisdekaiphobia on the board. there are few combos that are further away from being near instant. (yes, you could haste it. thereby adding more moving parts to a combo in a format with not that much tutoring and filtering.)

      • Happy The Cat

but the thing is the deck doesnt have to rely on the combo. you can easily rely on the bw lifesteal from bfz to finish off a player after this or set up triskaidekaphobia to kill. the deck will just so happen to have a one turn kill if you leave too much stuff on the board.

        • Damián Contursi

What bw lifesteal? Ayli only gains you life, Cliffhaven will give you just 1 life.

          • Happy The Cat

… the ones that say a player loses life and you gain life… Drana’s Emissary, for example.

          • Damián Contursi

Oh, I thought you meant some other combo with some of those cards. I’ll consider the tree for my deck now!! Thanks!!

        • Damián Contursi

Am I missing an awesome card in my bw lifesteal deck? :v

        • eltratzo

I didn’t say it was not feasible. I very much suspect it is.

I just didn’t like the phrase “near instant win” since it just doesn’t describe what happens.

      • Tye

They just gave us a land with R T: give target creature haste until EoT.

  • Nanya

    BOO!

    BOO!!!

    This should be a Treefolk!

    • Gareth Martin

      No it shouldn’t.

      • Nanya

        Doran wants a new toy!

        • Kahai

Doran just got the Observer which should have been an elemental (Soul of the Harvest).

    • Kahai

This is a direct call back to an Innistrad block card. Tree of Redemption. Nearly the same card save color and whose life is exchanged.

  • Ian

Plant???? Erratta Text please… This is a Tree

    • Gareth Martin

trees are plants and “tree” isn’t a subtype being used.Plant has 44 cards atm.

    • Kahai

It is a dying version of Tree of Redemption. Look it up. :P

  • William Walter Kirk

Ultimate price…Yes. ruinous path…yes. declaration in stone, yes..stasis snare…yes, planar outburst…yes. anguished unmasking…yes. languish, grasp of darkness, and the rest of the inferior removal…No. won’t see standard play.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

But you know what, its still a really cool card.

      • William Walter Kirk

It makes my inner timmy go crazy, no doubt.

    • wwww

A lot of played creatures in Modern dies to Bolt.
A lot of played creature in Legacy dies to StP or Force of Will.

I doubt the Tree will see plays, but not because of it’s fragile.

    • Kevan Kramer

You sir made the dumbest argument if a card will see play or not. Yes the combo is fragile, but you can protect with things like counter spells.

    • Damián Contursi

gisela and thalia are ones of the bests cards of the set at the moment, and they die to everything in your list, even grasp and languish. That doesn’t stop them to be high value cards. If the tree doesn’t see play, it’s not because of the removal.

  • Ryū

    That’s pretty awesome.

  • Daniel Behan

The giving tree is back and it is pissed lol

  • Shadowphex

    Triskaidekaphobia FTW!

  • Julna Buras

*dives for prerelease promo Triskaidekophobia* Don’t worry, dear, I found you a friend…

  • Kevan Kramer

This is my favorite card in the set so far. I love the callback and the color switching ability. The comboes with this thing are funny as well.

  • Happy The Cat

well this is an auto include for doran the siege tower edh, it’s older counterpart made a huge argument for the slot of an animated wall in the deck but this using an opponent’s health puts this in a much more powerful position. heck, this might even argue slots for any edh deck running black. you shut down any life gain deck very quickly and can set up one turn kills for any deck.
one little drawback this has compared to the old tree is that it doesn’t have the pseudo life gain effect form equipment. I guess token decks could leave their skullclamp on it and slowly drain players, but that just leave failures like it getting killed while they have their 39 life.

    • Vizzerdrix

its a slower sorin markov so id argue its worth running and a 0/40 while not super impressive is a really good blocker

      • Happy The Cat

a 0/40 is super impressive for a deck like Doran edh, don’t know if you know what he does but he makes it so all creatures assign damage with their toughness, instead of power. effectively making this a 40/40.

        • Vizzerdrix

yes im familar with doran i use him in modern abzan as a budget goyf. i was just looking at in general black edh its still decent and leaving behind a 0/40 is rediculous

          • Happy The Cat

that isn’t what the black deck cares about, them setting a player to 13 about the time they can deal ~13 damage in a turn is what they care about. it will be included in Doran edh, I said it MIGHT be on the table for a slot in most other decks. the three colored commanders that have black tend to have a large amount of burst that will take advantage of setting people to 13 life. it won’t be like damnation how if you don’t have white you always have it in your deck but this would be one of my top 200 goto cards for black

          • Vizzerdrix

yeah id agree with that, also black being the color for tutors you can also win with triskaidekaphobia and the tree, my experience with mono black is a vampire deck ive built a couple times, while this isnt a vampire id say it fits in the decks i had alongside temporal extortion, blood tribute and sorin.
either way the potential for edh is prob the place for it

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

What you do is play it, then trigger when opponent is at a high life total, then, when they get their life total high again, just bounce it back to your hand and play it again.

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

On the other hand, this card would be amazing in edh or even modern with phenax and his amazing milling tactics.

    • Mov

Its a one shot thing though – you exchange 13 for their life total (presumably higher than 13), and then if you want to use it again you have to give an opponent a higher life total. Hmmm… Or you could be a madman and be exchanging player’s life totals around by having some sort of icy manipulator effect to tap/untap it. So yeah I could see this being fun in EDH.

  • Blahblahblahbla

I will use this in EDH. This will pressure board wipes and with recursion is likely to eventually go off. Love the flavor, love the art. Better version of Tree of Redemption is better.

  • The_Good_O

    Step 1: Give it vigilance
    Step 2: Play assault formation
Step 3: pay to let it attack
Step 4: tap it before damage, but after declaring attacks
    Step 5: profit

    • The_Good_O

Upon further consideration, I realized I want to make standard abzan assault formation a thing. Triskaidecaphobia, odric, anything with skulk and/or vigilance…. I will win no games, but if I do, it shall be glorious.

      • Daniel Kaine Allen

You good sir are a genious. A mad and dilerious one, but a genious nonetheless.

      • Brogan Justicar Gibbons

Behind the scenes, all your creatures have skulk, opponent can only block it with 0 power creatures

  • Pollaski

My first thought was Triskadekaphobia, obviously.

My second thought was opponent plays it & Trisk, Malevolent Whispers/Eldrazi Obligator/Act of Treason on your turn, use it. Laugh maniacally.

  • Benjamin Glaubinger

Activate, hold priority, cast Twisted Image targeting Tree. Tree dies, ability resolves, last known value is 0, win.

    • Fred Weasley

This excerpt is from the gatherer on Tree of Redemption since Tree of Perdition isn’t out yet, it isn’t on the site, but I imagine it would be the same, which would mean you would only kill TOP for no reason. This is the bottom ruling.
“If Tree of Redemption isn’t on the battlefield when the ability
resolves, the exchange can’t happen and the ability will have no effect.”

      • Fbn Dnl Schlr

Doesn’t work. Gatherer says “If Tree of Redemption isn’t on the battlefield when the ability resolves, the exchange can’t happen and the ability will have no effect.” The tree dies before the ability resolves.

        • Fred Weasley

What you said is exactly what I have above which is why I said if you did it that way you’d kill Tree of Perdition for no reason.

  • Damián Contursi

I would like to tap for the abilitie, throw a Turn to Frog there and if it works, opponent’s life = 1. Then just hit him with something (?

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Doesn’t work because the creature also loses all abilities

      • Mr.Mayhem631

Sure it does. Cast TTF in response, after you’ve tapped it.

  • Fred Weasley

For all those who think that playing Turn to Frog, Dance of the Skywise, or Gift of Tusks before tapping for it’s ability, it won’t work. I’ll let you figure that one out on your own.

Edit: You could tap him before playing those while the ability is on the stack to my knowledge.

    • Damián Contursi

That’s what I meant. Tap the tree, and while the ability is on the stack you cast Turn to Frog, so the tree is a 1/1, the the triggered ability resolves and opponent is 1 life. I think it would work like that.

      • Zerith

When the ability goes on the stack the tree had 13 toughness. The stack still remembers this regardless of what its toughness is when it resolves.

        • Fred Weasley

There’s always Reduce In Stature which will definitely be my choice until it rotates out.

        • Mr.Mayhem631

It will exchange its toughness at the time of resolution. So casting TTF in response does work.

      • Happy The Cat

you will turn it into a 1/1 which no longer has this ability or you will change their life to 13

        • Mr.Mayhem631

What Damian said would work. It doesn’t matter if Tree still has the ability, it still resolves.
Tap it, then TTF, then the ability resolves, setting the opponent’s life to 1.

        • Patricio Díaz

If you really want to be sure about it, why don’t try it on mol with Three of redemption instead of the new one. The habilities work the same way so you could be sure that way.

      • Happy The Cat

however Omnibian will work, enjoy your three health ;)

    • Asghaad

Sorceress Queen – makes creature 0/2 and keeps all the abilities …

thankfully it only concerns Commander but…

  • chad

esper control is now my deck of choice! (as if it wasn’t before duh). phobia+tree = win!!!!! oh, to state the obvious red black deck, haste land in play with phobia, play tree and give it haste, tap tree, pass turn.

  • JoeBob

I now want to make a deck with this, Tree of Redemption, and Necrotic Ooze. Throw in Devoted Druid and Quillspike for more fun and go to town.

    • Nierlich

      Don’t forget about Triskaidekaphobia!

  • Blahblahblahbla

Wound Reflection and this in EDH are good buddies. Almost as brutal as Sorin Markov.

    • maleficium

simply not true… player doesn’t loose life due to the tree’s ability. so wound reflection’s useless

      • Blahblahblahbla

118.5. If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific
number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up
        with the new total.

        Check it, dawg.

    • Happy The Cat

there is no loss of life, you merely exchange their current health with the toughness of this tree

      • Blahblahblahbla

118.5. If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific
number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up
        with the new total.

    • Blahblahblahbla

118.5. If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific
number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up
      with the new total.

This is pretty basic stuff, yall.

    • Jaya

Wont always work, lets say the guy had 15 life b4 you activate this…yeah.
Another thing could be mutilation then tap this. Or any good /-x that are <13

      • Blahblahblahbla

Of course, that’s common sense, but in competitive/combo EDH games, 99% of the time you are either very close to 40 life or dead and nothing in between.

  • little red

a truly dark soul doesn’t use this tree to short change his enemy, but instead uses it to prolong his enemy, keeping him alive for a little bit longer only for your own dark pleasure.

    • Geddon

I was just thinking that. Sure, the most efficient way to use it is to drop the toughness and tap, but the flavor of Eldritch Moon demands that you trap your opponent in an unwinnable game, attack for 12 each turn, then tap. Torment neverending.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

That doesn’t work, since it exchanges toughness and would become a 0/1 the first time.
        Guess it doesn’t matter.

  • Bige Boiy

Why, oh why did triskadekaphobia have to be in standard with painlands?

    • Mov

Rotation will come in a few months…

  • Dylan Dougherty

    Why….

  • ningyouNK

    Quick rules question:

Let’s say you control Triskaidekaphobia (at the beginning of turn, players at 13 life lose the game) and this tree. The opponent has Sign in Blood in hand (makes you lose 2 life). That means if you can use the ability of this card immediatly after Triskaidekaphobia triggers your opponent loses. But if he/she can cast Sign in Blood before you activate this card’s ability, he/she will lose 2 life before Triskaidekaphobia resolves, will be at 11, and not lose the game.

So timing is of the essence here! Hence my question: If my own Triskaidekaphobia triggers, who has the priority? Do I get to use this card’s ability first? Or do my opponent gets to cast Sign in Blood first?

    • Rocket Raccoon

If you control trisk and as a response you activate this abilitiy, he/she must wait to resolve it to use the sing in blood. I would say this is like Valakut, if they sacrifice the enough lands just to trigger it and you destroy one of those, it won’t make damage, so I suppose this goes the same way.

      • Mr.Mayhem631

I don’t think there’s any way to stop Valakut by destroying mountains.
Also, if you replace SIB with an instant they can in fact cast it in response to Triskaidekaphobia after this ability resolves to save their life.

        • Rocket Raccoon

Yes, if with Valakut combo they only search for 6 mountains, before it resolves you destroy one of them, on the resolving it will count only 5, so it won’t deal damage.

          • Mr.Mayhem631

            Ah, makes sense.

      • ningyouNK

Aaaah you can wait for it to resolve even if you don’t have your priority I didnt think of that! That does solve the problem, thanks a lot =)

    • Kiowa

Well sign in blood is sorcery speed so you wouldn’t have to worry abou that but i see what u mean

      • ningyouNK

Oops sorry, yes I was thinking something that would change their life total before Triskaidekaphobia resolves but AFTER Tree of Perdition’s ability resolves, so yes in my hand Sign In Blood was instant speed ^^

    • Mr.Mayhem631

If you replace SIB with an instant they can in fact cast it in response to Triskaidekaphobia after this ability resolves to save their life.

    • Free the Eternal

116.5. Each time a player would get priority, the game first performs all applicable state based actions as a single event (see rule 704, “State Based Actions”), then repeats this process until no state based actions are performed. Then triggered abilities are put on the stack (see rule 603 “Handling Triggered Abilities”). These steps repeat in order until no further state based actions are performed and no abilities trigger. Then the player who would have received priority does so.

Because trisk triggers at the beginning of your upkeep after the ability triggers you will get priority.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Looks like a tasty treat for a Mimeoplasm.

  • Jaya

This looks like that boss from dark souls 3…This set has slrsly no originality.
Great card. Put some /-x effects on it or counters and can fast drop some1s life in a blink. Might be control stapple.

    • Silverwolf600

You know this is a new version of the card tree of redemption from original Innistrad, only warped by the eldrazi’s presence.

    • Kaiser

Tree of redemption exist a lot before DS 3 XD this is his corrupted/”mad” version

    • Melissa Juice

You realize that Dark Souls didn’t invent spooky trees, don’t you?

  • Geddon

So, this card could just wreck in Commander, right?

    • eltratzo

it has quite a bit of competition with the set to ten cards, which don’t need to sit around for a turn before ruining someones day but yeah. seems playable.

      • Oloro

Imho, more than just playable in EDH, specially against Oloro and the like decks.

        • eltratzo

Yes its great against oloro (if you can quickly kill him after that otherwise he just heals back up into infinity). it also has to sit around a full turn without the oloro player removing it. I’d consider sorin markov the stronger option in most decks, but if you have slots for both or dont want to pay bbb costs or have enough focus on recursion to sac and replay this one multiple times it might be the better option.
Still not something every black deck needs.
But certainly something quite a few at least partially black decks will want to take a second look at.
I don’t think it is powerfull enough to reach format staple status. its applications are just to narrow: its a wall that can sometimes out of nowhere set up a kill on an opponent with way to much life but otherwise lackluster defenses (killing a player with wound reflection looks fun though ^^).

          So over all: “playable” ^^

  • M.T.G

So, this is basically the opposite of tree of redemption, and it seems like it can do well in commander or in trisky decks.

    • Atarka Effreet

This is not the opposite; this is what happened when Emrakul came.

      • Reyos Blackwood

it is and it isn’t, effect wise it’s opposite, you vs opponent, but yes it is just a corrupted tree of redemption.

  • Mr.Mayhem631

Easy turn 5 kill in Rakdos or Grixis with Sudden Spoiling or any of Blue’s myriad base P/T change effects in response, seems good.

  • MrAptronym

One of my favorite cards of all time gets a sequel! Still sad it is not legendary, but making an opponent’s life 13 is handy with Triskadekaphobia. Plus, I suppose you can reduce the toughness any number of ways. Great card.

  • Melissa Juice

Has to be a contender for favorite card spoiled so far. So ominous.

  • ningyouNK

Does damage reduce a creature’s toughness? If I deal 3 damage to it for instance, is its toughness 13 or 10?

    • Reyos Blackwood

damage does NOT change toughness, it is marked against it, so if you deal 3 damage it will be a 0/13 with 3 damage marked on it.

      • ningyouNK

        thanks ! ^^

      • free the eternal

Not quite, if this works like tree of redemption the change stays. Look tree of redemption up on Gatherer, its a very complicated card.

        • Reyos Blackwood

The change is not damage. We are talking about damage, yes the change stays as a result of the activated ability, bt ningyouNK’s question effectively was asking would damage on the tree change the life amount swapped, and it does not, you can’t have a 0/13 tree, do 12 damage to it, then give the opponent 1 life in the trade.

  • DJ Pad

Seems gross in combination with Turn to Frog/Humble effects.

  • Jacob Bachand

I’m not as tricky with it as most of you. I just want it in my Esper sideboard against aggro. Great blocker and buff my life total after they human me close to death. Then cast Languish. Rinse repeat :)
    Nevermind. Opponents life total. Booo

    • Eric

In combination with Ayli it can buff your life total quite a bit.

  • DanDanDio

This plus Triskaidekaphobia = Absolute death.

    Wizard, plz nerf

    • Daniel Kaine Allen

NO!!! I need this!!!! No nerfy death tree!!!

    • Scathain

The death is on upkeep, giving them time to countered with painlands, instant speed burn spells and lifegain, etc. It will be very nice, don’t get me wrong, but not in need of a nerf.

  • NiceLamp

Noooooooo, Not my Tree of Redemption!!! That was my favorite card in Original Innistrad!!! Sidenote: it does make me wanna make some kinda black defender deck now with this kinda card. with the roles reversed on this card, i kinda wanna see what kinda combo’s are available.

  • kmk888

Man I’m scared of this tree. And scary bad combo decks that play it. Would that be referred to as Tricksydeckophobia?

  • Zombie

Play Tree of Perdition, pass turn.

Untap, cast Nameless Inversion targeting Tree, activate, kill your opponent with Hidetsugu’s Last Rite

    10/10 would jank kill again

    • Lixilix

even better, use the enchantment that says players lose if they have 13 health

      • Ben Driver

It takes too long to get off. Both cards are 4 mana so you cant cast in the same turn. So essentially your giving your opponent 2 turns, (the tree doesn’t have haste and the enchantment kicks in on your upkeep) to gain or lose life or kill the enchantment.

        • Lixilix

lets face it, if you are playing either of these cards, you arent playing competitive.

  • Robert FakeLastName

trisk decks just got a huge boost.

  • Edward

Oh look Reduce In Stature will probably see standard play now. Making this a 0/2 without affecting the ability is going to work wonders

  • Velvet Wurm

    Sorry Olloro

    • Hedronal

So says Sorin Markov as well.

  • Kevin Johnstone

Just curious.. if you activate… hold priority, and in response… twisted image…

Will the opponent and this creature die… or what?

    • Hedronal

This would die the next time state-based actions are checked for having 0 toughness. That happens after Twisted Image resolves, but before the Tree’s ability happens, so the opponent would be fine.

      • Hecatombz

wouldnt you use the Tree’s ability 1st then in response use image?

        • Hedronal

How that happens on the stack:

          1. The stack is empty, and you have priority. State-based actions like toughness being 0 or less are checked, and none trigger.
You tap the tree to put its ability on the stack.
          2. Tree of Perdition’s ability is on the stack. State-based actions check again and find nothing.
You cast Twisted Image targeting your Tree of Perdition.
          3. Tree of Perdition’s ability is on the stack, with Twisted Image on top of it. Again, nothing state-based happens, as neither of them has resolved yet.
You let Twisted Image resolve. Your Tree of Perdition becomes a 13/0, and you draw a card.
          4. Tree of Perdition’s ability is on the stack, and as a spell or ability just resolved, state-based actions are checked. The tree has 0 or less toughness, so it is put into a graveyard as a state-based action.
You let Tree of Perdition’s ability resolve. The tree is not still alive, so its toughness can’t be switched with anything.
          Done.

Total change: You spent one blue mana, used your Twisted Image, and your Tree of Perdition died. You drew a card. Nobody’s life total changed.

    • David S. McCrae

If the tree has a +1/+1 counter on it, you can get your opponent to 1 life. That’s as best you can get. The other people commenting covered the rest.

  • Carlos

    Sideboard against Suicide Zoo.

I mean, it exactly kills Death’s Shadow!

  • Daedronus

I’m excited for the combo with triskaidekaphobia, but more so for my assault formation deck.

  • Kezvin

    Assault formation, anybody?

  • Hecatombz

would this work with twisted image just killing them on the next turn?

    • Hedronal

No, the tree would die before its ability resolved. There’s an in-depth version of why below.

    • Ben Driver

You can always use a cheap +1/+0 or something then twisted image (making it a 13/1) and use a cheap burn spell on your opponent to kill them off…
