• Krhaynes1

May I have four of please!

  • Ants Johnson

“Mana of any type” includes colorless, huh. Wonder if they’re shifting over to that from “mana of any color,” or if they’re keeping the two separate as a power level knob.

    • Robert FakeLastName

does that include phyrexian mana… lol.

      • Tehshortstack

nope no such thing as phyrexian mana is a cost to play a card not a actual type of mana e.g. it cant be created by a permanent or card effect only used to pay the cost to cast cards and activate abilities

        • Happy The Cat

well, it can be used to pay for phyrexian mana, since it can be any color… and since you are casting the spell you can pay 2 life for your phyrexian spells…
also, I’m pretty sure he was joking, seeing as phyrexian mana is just a nickname we gave an alt cost effect from one set six years ago…

      • Andy

        It includes snow mana lol

    • Hedronal

Did you leave the “in my Eyes” out of your username?

  • Zeb Jaffe

Wizards…STAHHP! Green has had more card advantage than blue since Dig and Cruise rotated, while being able to compete even while these titans did exist in Standard. Blue is no longer the primary draw color. Playable draw spells in blue include a 2 for 1 uncommon at 4 mana (Glimmer of Genius) and Anticipate which isn’t even card advantage. Playable draw in green is Tireless Tracker, Duskwatch Recruiter, Lifecrafter’s Bestiary, and now this. Blue hasn’t seen a playable 3-for-1 in years, while green decks just have to turn 4 Tireless Tracker into an Evolving Wilds, assuming you can actually answer the Tracker before your opponent can untap. The only thing propping up the color blue is Torrential Gearhulk. Without a playset of that spell, blue is not worth playing.

    • God Enel

Good, blue already has the best draw spells and card selection spells of all time, and it’s already the most powerful color in magic by FAR, it doesn’t need more. I would be ok with some reprints though.

      • Happy The Cat

blue is SUPPOSED to be the drawing color. it not being the drawing color means something is kinda wrong with a set(or it’s some wonderful abomination from the Commander boxes)

        • God Enel

And green is supposed to be the creatures color, and yet blue also gets the best creatures along with having the best draw and card selection (Delver, True-Name Nemesis, Vendilion Clique, Snapcaster Mage), it also has the best planeswalker (Jace TMS), and it’s the only color with good counterspells. Isn’t that enough?

          • NC

            Those aren’t in standard.

          • God Enel

            True but irrelevant.

          • NC

OP was talking about color balance in standard. You, for some reason, decided to talk about the entire history of the game. idgi.

          • God Enel

Maybe it’s because cards printed for standard can also be played in eternal formats.

          • NC

Even though everyone else up there was trying to talk about recent Standards.

          • God Enel

I don’t care about what they were trying to talk about, I view magic as a whole when I analyze cards, Standard is not the only thing that matters.

          • NC

…on a card that only matters in standard and edh.

          • God Enel

The card, yes, the point of the discussion, no.

          • Happy The Cat

but blue doesn’t get the best creatures, it gets good utility creatures but not the best creatures, also out of the five cards you listed four of them wizards themselves said were much more powerful than they intended.
also, last time I checked Goyf was the best creature, seeing as it’s still sitting at that $140nf to $800f compared to snap’s $48nf and clique’s $35nf.
but I mean, you must have a point somewhere right? like how CoCo totally had all those “blue” mini goyfs that made the deck op, not any green cards in that deck. or how the only reason the blue eldrazi made decks is simply cause the deck needed filling out for playable cards. Was there blue in the abzan mid after dig and cruise got banned that eventually got so bloated to win mirrors people were just throwing 40 red one drops into a deck and beating them.

          • xxxx

            Goyf is a “blue” card

          • God Enel

No idea what you’re trying to imply. If it’s that Goyf is the best creature ever printed, you’re delusional.

          • God Enel

Goyf doesn’t come even close to True-Name Nemesis and Delver of Secrets, but Nemesis isn’t Modern legal and Delver doesn’t have the support it needs in Modern to really shine. Goyf is seeing less and less play in Legacy, because he’s been outclassed a long time ago.

          • Erik López Barcelar

Blue got 5 powerful creatures in more than 20 years of magic. Blue’s ready to take over the creature game.

          • God Enel

Not 5 powerful creatures, the most powerful creatures OF ALL TIME.

          • Erik López Barcelar

          • God Enel

Name a creature better than True-Name Nemesis and Delver.

          • Erik López Barcelar

Ever heard about Tarmogoyf, Goblin Guide, Dark Confidant, Young Pyromancer, Scavenging Ooze, Voice of Resurgence, Deathrite Shaman, Stoneforge Mystic…? Sure, not all of them are that powerful or are only really powerful when played in a specific deck, but it’s the same for True-Name Nemesis and Delver. Yeah, they are dope as hell, but they aren’t the best creatures in game lol. Delver has to be played in a specific kind of deck, and he’s still a bit risky bc you may not transform him as soon as you expected and hes easy to remove. Also, you don’t even need to destroy him. Just return him to his owner’s hand or temporarily exile him and thats some hard tempo. True-Name Nemesis on the other hand is very hard to remove yeah, but you can still counter it or use some spell that doesn’t target it or even go for Surgical Extraction. Besides, suppose you don’t remove it. You’re taking 3 damage every turn. I doubt thats a thing on Legacy and Vintage, since even in Modern it wouldn’t be such a big deal, and as for Commander you run one copy of each creature so I wouldnt worry much about only one of these, but in this case idk bc I dont play Commander, so better ask a Commnader player about that.

  • VBFabled

Sorry, Garruk’s Horde, you’re getting replaced.

  • MTGFanatic

Wow. So good, 5 color deck is possible in standard now.

  • Julian Allen

…every good creature in standard plus this. got it, new deck incoming. dont care if it’s good it’s possible o/

  • Happy The Cat

the menagerie is for guests only.

    • Happy The Cat

also this used to be a seven mana 7/7 without the rainbow effect because this ability would have been too powerful on a smaller card. Thanks, mono green power creep. that’s without pointing out there is a 3/3 piper for green in this same set, and the onslaught of mini goyfs we’ve been getting.

      • Madness

3G that lets you cast using any mana. Not exactly hard to splash.

  • Ja Ja ja

  • Ja Ja ja

Guys…….eldritch evolution will shine in new format. Too many good cards Champion of Rhonas, and this.

  • Ryū

    Snekcellent, most snekcellent.

    • Happy The Cat

naga please, this ain’t no snake.

      • Matt Taylor

Snake-man that slots into the non existent 4-drop slot of constrictor decks.

        Snek-man, friend of snek.

      • Ryū

He’s a snek in body and soul, just not type.

  • N

Seriously did green really need MORE amazing creatures? I mean I thought this set would tone down green and white but green is getting amazing creatures and white is getting amazing other spells and gideon.

    • Matt Taylor

Snek deks are making a come back I think, my version is completely devoid of 4 drops so this guy will fit very nicely as a 3 or MAYBE even 4 of.

  • TheRealSpecialK

Alright guys, ruling question. Because it just says you can cast the top card if it is a creature, can you cast it as an instant?

    • MrAptronym

Nope, not unless the creature has flash. Normal rules for when you can cast the spell apply.

      • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

I wonder if u can cast it with pharixian mana? that would be great

        • Absinthman

If that creature has phyrexian mana symbols in its cost, you can pay 2 life for each of them. Basically for all questions about casting that card, imagine it’s in your hand. Extra bonus that the Vizirer adds is that you also don’t need to use exactly the colors of mana that creature requires from you to cast it.

          • ymmij X

Or type. This can be used to cast waste mana cards as though the mana were colorless.

        • MrAptronym

There is no such thing as phyrexian mana. It’s not a mana type that you can add to your mana pool or anything. the ‘Phyrexian mana symbol’ denotes a cost that can be paid with mana or 2 life.

    • Gareth Martin

Why would you think you can?

  • Dominic Ng

Slightly synergize with cycling as you are not throwing cards away to randomly draw a card in hope of finding the answer. That said, a deck running this card is not likely to have tons of noncreature answer

  • Teddy Gillespie

great mythic, could very possibly shape a standard deck and for sure will retain value because it’s a bomb in commander

  • Delipha

Ok,the art feels a beat werid to me,can’t really explain it. The card is pretty amazing and I’m hoping that it’s price doesn’t skyrocket cuz I really want a copy

  • Tom Cyrillus Arditi

Exert cards + seedborn muse mwhehehe :3

    • Feedthemtolions

      that is filthy!

  • Robert Eriksen

Why would a naga feel the need to wear actual clothes though? I get that they’d wear stuff like amulets, armlets, armor and the like, but fabric clothes? Won’t they get cold?
Idk, it just looks weird to me.

    • Gareth Martin

So he isn’t just a snake. He is a humanoid snake and that means using earth snake biology isn’t 100% accurate. He isn’t even wearing tons of layers or articles of clothing. A big part of it must be cultural. He probably want to fit in his society.

That, or lots of Egyptian gods had animal parts and wore clothes. So they make him similar to fit the flavour.

    • Matt Taylor

      Why would they get cold?
When the sun is out it would heat the clothes as well as their bodies, it would also help them retain that heat for longer after the sun went down.

If anything your suggestions of amulets, armlets and armor would make them get cold as they all act as heat sinks, drawing away their body heat.

This is all assuming their human characteristics don’t allow them to generate their own body heat like mammals.

      • Hedronal

It’s Amonkhet, at least one sun is always out.

  • Blahblahblahbla

You may look at the top card!? Not play with it revealed?? Any type of mana, not just colored?? Only 1 green symbol in the casting cost?!?!?

The versatility of this card has me drooling. Now I’m imagining some Christmas wonderland in EDH with this, infinite colorless mana and Mana Severance. I like when cards immediately make me think of cards like Mana Severance. :D

  • Samuel H. Mulugeta

This is going straight into my animar edh

  • Miles Rinesmith

This is going to go right into my Surrak Dragonclaw deck. holy cow is that ability amazing.

  • xxxx

Can’t wait to have both him and oracle of mul daya on the battlefield in edh.
Imagine a Rashmi, Eternities Crafter edh deck with the vizer, oracle of mul daya, courser of kruphix, future sight and magus of the future … this will be so sweeeet. + top, scroll rack, mirri’s guile and sylvan library to set up the top cards each turn for max value. + Worldly tutor and sylvan tutor stop beeing card disadvantage …., …. ,….
    @[email protected]

  • Cthulhooo

Instant EDH staple in some decks?

    • xxxx

  • chad

Now this is worthy of mythic rarity, huge EDH staple…Meren and or any creature based deck wants this.

    • Ja Ja ja

You forgot Eldritch Evolution. Green color will break standard. I already see Abzan Evolution, whit Champion of Rhonas, and this card, to bring out best creatures.

  • Bige Boiy

    what a lovely snake

    • CMK

Snake.. but not snake. A shame older Snake buffs can’t be retroactively updated to benefit Nagas as well.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    God damn, that’s incredibly useful

  • Michael Perlov

Does mean that you will be able cast any creature with eldrazi temple mana?

    • Michael Perlov

      or mishra’s factory?

      • TomGalonska

The restriction “only for artifacts” or “only for eldrazi” still remain the same, the difference is, that you now can pay coloured cost with the factory (to play a gearhulk, or another coloured artifact)

    • Pier-Luc Tremblay

Yes, but only you will get 2 mana only if you cast an eldrazi, one mana otherwise. Also note, it says “mana of any type”, i think this means that color mana can now pay for pure colorless cost (Matter Reshaper and thought-knot seer, etc.).

If this guy was 3 mana for a 2/3 instead, i’d put it in my Bant Eldrazi Deck.

      • Tolle

You are correct that colored can now pay for colorless here. It is because it says “type” instead of “color.”

  • Zombie

Gonna be huge for EDH decks like Momir Vig, can’t see it impacting standard.

Modern Elves might play it as a combo piece, though

  • G Cartet

Does this give the top creature on your deck effective flash? Says you can look anytime and may cast the top card if it is a creature….

    • Kevin Johnstone

No. Casting restrictions would apply. If the creature HAS flash, you can flash it in, or a similar effect, but otherwise, you may cast only at sorcery speed.

  • Kevin Johnstone

Best card in the set IMO

  • mehngo

The first thing I thought of when I saw the wording for the last ability was the ability to abuse snow mana costing, which is kinda cool.

Edit: Snow Mana isn’t a type, but rather a usage restriction relative to the mana ability used from a snow land to produce a particular type of mana. The mana type of any snow mana is just the relevant color, the cost restriction is separate I believe.

    • Fey

If you had a creature that required 3 & Snow W, you could play it with this card and 4 Snow Mountains then?

  • Kahai

Third Vizier isn’t a color pair. There isn’t likely to be a color paired cycle of Viziers this set. This guy is awesome though :D

I think the legendary are color paired – the monocolor are just rare

  • VoiceofKane

Wait, a card that lets you cast your top card but doesn’t make you reveal it? That’s new and very cool.

    • Fey

Lens of Clarity and Sphinx of Jwar Isle already exist.

  • Derek Niles

Hello Snake Noah, welcome to EDH

  • Kumrag

Snek that can get more snek

  • Shagoth

Noah, I love this card! It’s one of those EDH cards were it should be more explosive and game breaking in constructed but because of meta game, speed and removal it’s not. So it will be brutal in EDH.
    Also, Glimpse of Nature.

  • potatogod442

This set should be renamed as commander 2017

  • potatogod442

Keep in mind that you don’t reveal the card to your opponent, and you can look even after shuffle.

    I might pre-order this

  • Chris

Not bad. Not sure if it will be as good as Domri Rade was in standard though.

  • Is the first line of text an activated ability? Does it go on the stack?

    • Joshua Lane

      • Has Wizards stopped doing abilities with “0:” activation costs, or are they just an extreme rarity?

        • Joshua Lane

Basically, yeah. Anything like that besides a planeswalker received some errata.

    • Joshua Lane

Think of it the same as cards that say “play with the top card of your library revealed.” Things like Courser or Lantern don’t create a trigger to reveal when you draw a card. It just adds something that’s true about the game now.

  • kmk888

This card is great for Standard in a variety of ways. One, it’s just a good card and likely to draw you a bunch of cards and fix your mana.
Two, I’ve tested a deck that runs this, Samut, and Cryptolith Rites and this card just makes it explode (not to even mention Paradox Engine). Three, it’s really good with new Nissa (see Courser of Kruphix and Domri Rade).
