  • Pandancules

G/B wouldn’t mind this top end

  • Teddy Gillespie

i doubt she sees play till kaladesh rotates. BG constrictor will be the best BG deck almost guaranteed and there’s no way they can put a 6 drop in that deck, at least in the mainboard. Also the ult is boring cause they already did the concept, wish she was cooler all around

    • Kitnz

I could definitely see her get sideboarded in against control.

    • Hedronal

It wouldn’t be the first time that multiple decks had the same two colors in standard though.

  • Writerofthings

    Disappointed.

    • MTG fan

Me too. I wish she had explore as one of her abilities…

  • Kaiser

Oh hello my darling control winner

  • Kitnz

Interesting to see a PW with Green spawn a Pirate token (since pirates fall into UBR), but I suppose Vraska would do that given the direction her story looks to be going. I don’t know about Standard, but she’s potentially playable in Commander since that -3 is very flexible and useful while the +2 can help protect her in reaching for that Ult. I like her.

    • Tolle

She is certainly better than her last version of herself in commander but I am just not sure. PW often have trouble in commander unless you are building around them. Maybe in super friends deck but nowhere else.

      • Kitnz

I do agree with you, but doing 1-3 PWs in a casual deck is certainly feasible. I managed to Ult a Venser in a 4-player match as a Brago control player once. If you have a token-based deck with BG in it, Vraska could certainly be “good enough”, especially since the Treasure token is technically a token!

        • Tolle

The thing is Venser is worth running in a Brago style deck because his first two abilities are directly useful to that deck and can make an impact without worrying about ultimating him. If you do good for you. The issue is she doesn’t make enough of an impact without managing to ult her and the odds of that just aren’t high enough to be worth running her.

  • TogetherAlone

Mandatory Doubling Season Comment: Ult and make opponent go down to 1 with Vraska still alive.

    • Tolle

Not to mention it curves into it

    • Alex

Oh jeez, this in Atraxa superfriends plus Doubling Season is going to be a nightmare. Sorin’s “set a life total to 10” is already punishing enough…

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

I just wanna run my fingers through her hair, look into her eyes and tell her how much I love her

    • Srack the Herald

I guess every singed would love to do that

      • Phoenix UNBENCHED

        I’ll Drink To that

  • Mini Zem

    B-B-B-B-B-B-BUSTED!

    • Shagoth

      M-M-M-M-M-M MEH!

  • Torrey Clanton

Jund was looking good in the first place, even sultai control but this just pushed both to be legitimate threats in standard

    • Krhaynes1

Even abzan control with it having 2 really good sweepers.

    • Major Pain in the

I didagree. Maybe once kaladesh rotates out. I have seen nothing that will help with temur energy or Mardu vehicle. It’s at least 6 months till this card will show up in standard. And who know what the set after wil bring. Sh would have seen play at 4cc and maybe even as a 1/2 of at 5…. 6 mana is to late for her to make a difference, in the current and near future meta

  • Akisama Inu

    Dissapointed, not bad, but dissapointed
I guess i wanted somethin interesting for my gitrog

  • MrAptronym

6 Mana walkers are hard to justify I think, but she looks pretty good. A 2/2 with menace at +2 is going to make her relatively hard to take down if you are on the defensive, and is obviously pretty nice when you’re the beatdown. Pirate is a relevant tribe here as well. The -3 is costly, but I am extremely glad that Vraska retains something close to her planeswalker vindicate. Getting ramp along with your destruction is really solid, just like the +2, I think it is a pretty versatile ability, and when you need it, it will save you. The ultimate is interesting, there are many situations where it is going to instantly result in a victory, either from her own evasive tokens or by a ‘lose 1 life’ style effect or simple burn. Those set-ups may actually be too easy, I am not a fan of instant win ultimates. There are certainly some ways around it that you can plan for if you see her across the table at least.

The most interesting thing to me is that they kept her golgari despite interacting with pirate themes that are in grixis. I am personally glad, I think it is important to let some of the non-gatewatch planeswalkers have relatively consistent color identities. I was sad to see Tamiyo move to bant in eldritch moon, even though I thought she had a really fun card. Vraska is another of my favorites so I am happy to see that this card feels very consistent with her previous design.

  • Peter Nordstrom

she says “deal with me now or lose” as you only have to plus her twice before ultimate

  • Vincent Godin-Filion

I don’t see any gorgon flavor in this card. Her 2nd ability petrifies and creates treasures? Are we selling the statues? Her ultimate doesn’t feel like petrification either. I love it, it’s great, but how can turning to stone leave you at 1 life?
She’s more a Pirate Lord than a Gorgon.
She should have made Statue Tokens instead loll, would have been funny at least.
Like “Create a 0/4 Statue artifact creature token with defender” or something.

    • Geddon

I’d say for Vraska every enemy she petrifies is a treasure to her. As for her ultimate, imagine being the statue. You’re still alive, inside the stone, but if someone bumps into you and knocks you over, you fall and shatter and die.

      • Vincent Godin-Filion

Haha I love it. You fixed the flavor! Now I really want to play her in my gorgon casual deck.

        • Geddon

          No problem.

    • Phoenix UNBENCHED

In the trailer she talks about keeping parts of her victims as trophies/tools

  • E.

Oh shhhh**** did near death experience just become a remotely playable card?!
    Lol still nope

  • Jason Ruth

0/10 can’t play in grixis pirates (commander)

    • chataolauj

Vraska was never going to be a Grixis card; she’ll always be BG.

      • Jason Ruth

I mean it’s obviousl she wouldn’t be friend. But she could have dropped to mono black. It would allow her to fit into groups commander, and it wouldn’t be too incorrect thematically seeing as how she’s both a pirate (not exactly too “green” of a life philosophy, “take what you want, give nothing back” and all) and a servant of Bolas.

        • Jason Ruth

Grixis, not friend, sometimes auto-correct is weird.

  • Kameenook

    badass !

  • Shagoth

Five mana, she’d be great for standard. Six mana, you’re going into the pits of Atraxa, where no one will be impressed with a planeswalker getting into that deck.

  • Happy The Cat

    Near-Death Experience…
but for real, this might be strong enough to ban in commander, there are tons of counter doublers, and this is basically an instant kill. if Worldfire, while costing three more, effecting yourself, and wiping everything off the board got the ban hammer, this probably is on the short list.

    • Aurore

Doubtful. Sorin drops people down to 10 and he’s not even an ultimate.

      • Happy The Cat

fyi ten is way more than one. like common lands can kill you at one. You can still fight back from ten, heck, I’ve even saved myself a few times by setting my life to ten with og sorin.

        • Aurore

…How? Sorin only sets your opponent’s life to 10, not yours. And putting someone to 10 turn 6 in commander that isn’t CEDH is a pretty good way to put someone on the defensive fast, especially since Sorin can tick up and hit them even faster into the danger zone. I think the two are comparable in strength, since Vraska also needs Doubling Season to ult turn 6. Also, Worldfire isn’t banned because it sets everyone’s life to 1. It’s banned because it does that AND you can float your mana, cast it, get rid of everything on board, grave, and hand, and then cast your commander with your floating mana and kill everyone in short order since they have absolutely nothing left. Vraska can’t do any of that.

  • chataolauj

Set my expectations too high for her; still good though.

  • Kahai

    YAY! <3

  • Derek Niles

seems great in commander. comes out, deals with a threat on the board, twice if need be making the ability comparable to her old minus, then pumps out blockers/threats until she either A, deals with another threat, or B forces people to deal with her (making them have to take a turn off your other planeswalkers or threats) or you get a nuke button pointed at someone. Maybe not as good as her original card but I think she’s great and now you can have both out at the same time

  • Hedronal

Different numbers and sizes of creatures combined with a wrath vs a targeted removal (that hits artifacts and enchantments too) void the comparison at that point.

  • Major Pain in the

Would be better at 4 mana, might have been standard playable. I do not think she will find a home at 6CC

    • Mr.Mayhem631

Would have had to be a lot weaker to be not broken though.

    • MrAptronym

This card as is would be absolutely broken at 4, but I do agree that planeswalkers are hard to justify at 6+ CMC.

  • Major Pain in the

I guess ina GB with some ramp you might be able to ramp to her. Or as a 1/2 of in a pirates deck.

  • Mike Seppy

What will she trade at? Will this be the most expensive card?

    • MrAptronym

Personally I expect preorder costs to be high (as they always are with planeswalkers), but I think her price will slowly drop from there. Of course if something happens in the standard metagame to make her a contender there then she’ll have a higher price for a while.

  • kmk888

I think this card is quite good for Standard. She reminds me a lot of an expensive Nahiri. Ticking her up repeatedly makes her very, very difficult to kill but you have to attack her because the ultimate likely ends the game on the spot. Also similar to Nahiri is that her -3 is a powerful and flexible removal option (with treasure as gravy). 6 mana is totally achievable in a normal game of magic, particularly with draw or ramp (like treasure).

I also happen to think Treasure Map/Cove is a crazy magic card and this card goes perfectly with it.

  • Jude

Just a bit too expensive for use in modern or standard competitve but still would be nice in standard or tabletop. Shes horrifying in commander, but ive resigned those comments seeing as a lot of ixalan is basically commander 2017 2.0

  • Guest

Is it odd that Vraska shares a name with a white creature who tutors for equipment?

    • Caleb Martin

Maybe Vraska, Relic Seeker is seekeing Relic Seeker to turn it into a relic.

  • Deadly Berry

Balanced. High cost for good rewards. The only thing that could improve her is adding the planeswalker type to the -3 ability, but I guess they didn’t want to give her her old -3 again, or perhaps they considered there is enough PW removal in T2 atm. Of course, some people will compare her to her first appearance; she is better IMO, because her old +1 offered almost no reward other than build points to use her -3. She’s fine as she is right now, stop crying.

  • Polis_Ohio

Since Chandra, Flamecaller still sees a bit of play in competitive standard I think it will see a bit of play, particularly if this format slows down. Her colors require a splash in any UB pirate deck, but with treasures that may not be an issue.

BG doesn’t really seem to be shaping up to be a thing, but who knows. Black has been rife with removal recently and continues to grow (the big loser being Grasp of Darkness), making it a tempting color to splash. BG with explore as a thing might be around, using winding constrictor.

  • Pacoqueiro

This is basically BG Elspeth (Theros). Her removal is single-target but extremely versatile, and her token creation is more aggressive. I don’t think pirates want her, since Vraska is so slow, but I think she will see play in any standard control deck in BG (the problem being those existing).

    • Giby86 .

I don’t understand the comparison. Yes, they both cost 6, but Elspeth goes horizontal in both token creation and removal, Vraska is targeted and versatile. I think they play very differently and fill very different roles.
