Pirates have sooo many two drops. I’m struggling to figure out which ones I want to use for my Looting Booty deck in standard.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

This doesn’t fit in with Grixis Pirates as we’ve seen it so far. So far it has been UB splashing red. This is probably not gonna fit on your curve for that deck. Maybe mono red or red black though. Depends on which colors you’re trying to be in

  • Vectis

This is a goblin? Looks like a monkey to me…

  • Random Guy

You can think of this as a 1-mana treasure artifact that creates a 1/1 on ETB. Which could see play in many formats, but it really depends.

    • Dr. Gitrog Crow

Would you pay 2 mana for a Lotus Petal? I wouldn’t. THe 1/1 is probably irrelavant most games.

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

In what format? A lotus petal with a separate body sounds very reasonable at 2 mana in standard. Eldrazi Scion generators saw play for a while even though that mana was more fragile (dies easily) and colorless

      • Random Guy

        1/1 is never irrelevant.

  • Dr. Gitrog Crow

It’s like the Ixalan version of Thraben Inspector. Unfortunately, I actually liked clues waaaay more than i like treasures, and this is a 2 drop vs 1 drop. Hmmm. Not sure how to evaluate treasure cards still though.

    • Njaal

As ramp, clues might be cool, but I think treasure is actually better overall. It might be a one-time ramp effect, but it still allows you to play those big cards sooner than you otherwise might.

      • M Hedonist

Clues aren’t ramp, they’re card advantage. This comparison makes no sense at all and this card won’t see remotely as much play as Thraben inspector.

        • Nathanael Lambert

that, and that extra 1 toughness on inspector was highly relevant

          • Hedronal

            And it’s RR.

        • Njaal

Yup. I was referring to treasure tokens being ramp, and that they should be viewed as such.

      • Njaal

Treasure tokens are ramp, I was replying to the previous message, kinda obvious if you think about it. I suppose the way I structured my sentence was a bit odd though.

    • Hedronal

RR makes this so much less worth it.

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Hmm. Doesn’t look like a goblin or a pirate. Looks like a Beast/Monkey. Pirates as a faction seem pretty varied so maybe a Pirate Beast/Monkey.. Maybe they heard too many people clamoring for goblins. It’s not like goblins won’t be coming back soon though. We’re going to Dominaria in a bit

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

Occurs to me that maybe this is supposed to play well with Dominarian goblins later on. Maybe

    • Marvin Sürig

I have to agree and disagree on the looks of this Goblin. My Point: It looks like a Trakir Goblin with blue skin. And depending on the plane WotC can make goblins look how they want.

      • Shawn Michael Diaz

I can see the resemblance. I think if they were going for Tarkir goblin but blue (blue is such a horrible color for goblins ick), they missed in the proportions by a lot and it looks way too Simian now. Also look at those feet! Maybe goblins live in trees instead of underground on this plane and are a primitive style of goblin or something. Hoping the lore makes up for the face-value flavor fail of the art

  • Likid

    Cool card for ramp

  • E.

    RAMPunap red

  • Edward

This might see some play if there is a better equipment for Pirates in this set or more incentive for cheap Treasure making. As is I don’t see a 2 mana 1/1 that costs 2 red being playing in anything but limited. Maybe if it was a 2/1 or had something else going to for it then it could be good but I don’t really see this being anything but a limited only card.

  • Kameenook

Can anybody potentially explain why this card isn’t just straight garbage ? It seems hardly bearable as a common, yet alone passable as an uncommon.

    • TogetherAlone

its cheap and does two things for a pirate tribal deck. First it gets a pirate in play, second it gets treasure in play which pirates very much care about.

      • Shagoth

Pirates are going to have plenty of two drops, and they have almost all been better than this so far. Also more splash able.

      • Kameenook

I haven’t yet seen a pirate card that i’d be willing to play this slop for. The treasure payoff doesn’t seem big enough for me. It seems like a fine common but uncommon seems awful to me.

  • Shagoth

Less bad Akki Rockspitter is still bad, more restrictive cost but the mana sticks around and is more flexible.

    • David D

If this or rocksplitter were just one R that’d be pretty insane.

      • Shagoth

It would be, but I think it would be a fair card if it was a 2/2 for two that made one.

  • Alex

Eh, could have a place if you’re building around the Pirate subtype in limited.

  • Grant Jacobson

does this go in the revel in riches deck? or is this purely for ramp?

    • Chris Tomsky

Don’t think so. I was super excited and thinking that splashing red might be necessary for it but that double Red cost kills it. You’d have to main red with just a splash of black to be able to pull that off. It might be possible to pull off with the Red legendary pirate who made Treasures and then just splashing black for Revel but I dunno, I doubt it. Not sure this will see play at all. Hoping for a different cheap 1-3 mana Treasure maker.

      • Dr. Gitrog Crow

Revel is probably UB with Mechanized Production, control package, etc.

      • Kameenook

So I’m not the only one who thinks this is awful then.

  • Happy The Cat

decent cheap card for Confusion in the Ranks. red chaos ftw.

  • sansmyhands

I am just perplexed by this card.

  • jim

Swiggity swooty, comin for that booty

  • davee
