  • Adam Watson

i will make him into a commander.

    • Will

      Won’t be difficult

      • Adam Watson

ive been wanting to make an edh deck in this color, but the only creature i wanted to use was kaalia but shes been done so many times i didnt see the point. now i have this guy and i like him.

        • Will

          ^Ditto!

        • Fbn Dnl Schlr

To be honest… the other two newspaper legends suck.

          • Adam Watson

what do you mean by “newspaper legends?”

          • Will

He means W/B/R. Reference to the old joke, “What’s black and white and re(a)d all over?”

          • ha blerg

“What’s black and white and re(a)d all over?” a sunburnt penguin D: ..?

    • Antares

What would be the focus of the deck? He seems very like Kaalia. The deck is there, and he just gets played and punches in the face repeatedly to kill with Commander Damage.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

Focus is, naturally, “Gotta go fast.”

        • Daniel Gilmore

Hedgehog tribal. Needs to be a thing.

  • da

    ORCS! ORCCCCCCCSSSS! OOOOOOOORRRRRRCCCCS! DEGA! (also)

  • Jacob

A spoiler for Khan’s as well, mayhaps? Looks like Khan’s.

  • Brom

Dies to shock! Cool as heck though.

    • Daniel Gilmore

doesn’t matter that he dies to shock! He gets in fast and gets in HARD, and you can’t kill him on the turn he does. You have no choice but to make him stronger or take a MASSIVE hit! Oh god he’s so BEAUTIFUL!

    • da

*Dies to sorcery speed shock, and only if you took 7 damage from him first (Chump him and he’s a 8/3)

    • Firstname Lastname

Dies to shock if you didn’t wait until turn six and slap Blessing of the Nephilim on him, pumping him to a 10/5.

  • Daniel Gilmore

DA ORKZ AR DA BIGGEST AN DA STRONGEST! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

    • Will

      DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA

      • JustAGhost

Rocket Launcher feels really appropriate for a Zurgo deck.

  • da

I’m very glad this wasn’t like a 2/2 or a 3/2 that had some anthem affect (seems like that’s what he’d might have been with ’cause the art always shows him surrounded by a bunch of folks…

I like, I won’t make him into a general tho, as much as I’d love to do it, he’d be too broken and mean (I mean, all those White/Red double strike cards and all that removal to keep him blocker free, I’d be picked off in multiplier, and win in two turns in single).

  • da

Damn! I just realized it’s only a warrior! WHY NOT A BARBARIAN, OR A BERSERKER! IT HAS TO ATTACK EACH TURN!

    • Antares

Because he’s a commander. They tend to need different attributes from Barbarians and Berserkers. This guy is pretty much like Genghis Khan, it seems like. :D

ON an unrelated note, these wedges look EPIC. I’m very excited to see the mana-fixing. A Red/White/Black aggro deck may well be possible (8 painlands and 4 Mana Confluence is badass, right?). I’m very excited for this set. :D

      • LeonFA

I suspect the lands of the first set will be the Wedge equivalent of the Alara lands as well, which should help with consistency. They’re slow, but very functional.

        • Antares

That’s just what’s available in Theros/M15 that is not a tapped land. Add in 12 scrylands, and you’ve got yourself a deck. XD :P Honestly, I think that 12 dual lands (one of which fixes perfectly) is enough. Even if not, Scrylands and basic lands split some way will work well enough. I think Theros BLock and M15 add in enough for the Wedges moving forward. :)

Hopefully aggro will be able to survive moving forward. I can definitely see the Sultai (BUG) control deck moving forward (if some good removal/resource denial/wrath comes out in their colors), and the Abzan (Junk) deck (cause it will just add in superior removal and awesome creatures and walkers to improve the deck). Both of those got significantly improved mana-bases thanks to the Pain-lands. The R/G Elspeth deck may see some stuff, but won’t be all that great moving forward (thanks to less support). R/W Heroic may improve and become T2 (or, dare I dream, T1).

Mono-black aggro can go die a horrible death in a fire, though.

    • guest

      Nor turn combat

      • Not GRUul? Then Die!

Every turn has a combat so he does have to attack each turn.

        • Kevan Kramer

He doesn’t have vigilance and you can’t attack on opponents turn with your creatures. The wording it there because you can give yourself multiple combat phases.

          • Not GRUul? Then Die!

Well yeah I realise that but I’m just trying to point out that there is a combat in every turn so if he can attack in a combat step that means he’s attacking on that turn as well.

    • Not GRUul? Then Die!

Well he’s the leader of an army, so you’d expect him to have some kind of order and civility. Barbarians and Berserkers just attack anything and everything in an uncivilized manner.

  • NC

If your opponent has removal left to deal with this guy then there’s a decent chance your earlier creatures have been bashing their face in…

  • guy

he’s ugly like a orc, smells like a orc, but he’s not green.

    • Daniel Gilmore

dat’s coz red wunz go fastah. DUH!

      • Will

        WAAAGH!

  • Dr. Burn Crow

    DAT WEDGE!

  • JLJakel

It says “Attacks each Combat if able” does that include your opponents turn as well, other wise it should say only “turn if able”… this sounds a lil rough

    • no. just your turns.

    • YouGotFranked

”Attack each combat” vs ”Attack each turn” becomes relevant when you have a mean of getting additional combat phases in a turn, which could be a thing with Zurgo being white and red.

    • Meow

Your creatures aren’t able to attack during your opponents combat

    • yodasodabob

i believe the words “each combat” are included because extra Combat phases are a thing.

    • Not GRUul? Then Die!

So you’re saying because he attacks each COMBAT if able as opposed to each TURN if able, he attacks on your opponents TURN? If it said TURN if able that would give me more reason to believe he attacks on my opponents TURN, even though I know (and you probably know now) that he can’t. And also if it’s your turn and he’s already tapped he can’t attack. The only reason it says COMBAT is if you have a card like Aurelia, The Warleader, which gives you an extra COMBAT phase.

  • this set will be great for commander.

  • Robert FakeLastName

    magma spray says hi.

    • Taco

Zurgo says 7 to the face first.

      • Robert FakeLastName

        magma spray is instant

        • guest

          Zurgo is indestructible

          • Robert FakeLastName

            magma spray exiles

          • guest

Exiles only if the creature dies first, which Zurgo won’t because of indestructible.

          • Robert FakeLastName

Magma exiles instead of killing it if it would die. The creature will not die then it will be exiled instead.

          • guest

“Magma Spray deals 2 damage to target creature. If that creature would die this turn, exile it instead”. The 2 damage will be negated by indestructible then the second half would check if it would die which it would not die because it’s toughness is not reduced to zero.

          • Robert FakeLastName

          • Hex Jonson

            are u dumb robert?

          • Robert FakeLastName

Ok, let me say this a bit more clearly. Magma Spray has a replacement effect. When a creature receives damage equal to its toughness, that triggers a state based action of a creature’s death. Indestructible prevents that state based action of death from occurring. However, since magma spray replaces the death with exile indestructible will not prevent it. Also, indestructibility does not prevent damage. It only prevents destruction.

          • Nate

Yes, exactly. It’s a replacement effect. If he WOULD die. He wouldn’t, so there’s no death to replace with an exile effect. It dies, then that death is replaced with exile.

702.12b A permanent with indestructible cant be destroyed. Such permanents are not destroyed by lethal damage, and they ignore the state-based action that checks for lethal damage (see rule 704.5g).

          • Hex Jonson

Just a couple of points to clear out potential misunderstandings.

Magma Spray does not reduce toughness, it deals damage (these are two different things, but are for some reason visualized the same way in Duels of the Planeswalkers). Casting four Magma Spray will not kill or exileErebos, God of the Dead, even though 8 damage is more than his 7 toughness, because he is indestructible. Magma Spray’s replacement effect says that if he would die, he would be exiled instead, but indestructible says he won’t die, so he doesn’t get exiled either.

If you resolve a Magma Spray and some other effect causes him to die, either because he is sacrificed, or because his toughness is reduced to 0 then he will be exiled instead of dying, because of Magma Spray. Reducing toughness to 0 is done with cards like Toxic Deluge that give -x/-x or -0/-x, which is not the same as damage.

          • Nate

Which could be a clever way to get rid of a god that you think someone might try to mess around with from the graveyard, somehow.

          • Andrew Hawkins

Hey I might be wrong here but with all the arguments I wondering if I am right since I have only been playing since the release of Nyx. Looking at the card wouldn’t the magma spray kill him because he is only indestructible on your turn. If it is your opponents turn doesn’t he lose indestructible and then would be dealt the damage?

          • guest

only if you play magma spray on your turn, but that would mean he did seven damage to you.

          • YouGotFranked

Yes Zurgo is indestructible only during his controller’s turn, so he lose it during his opponent’s turn and then Magma Spray would exile it. But the argument here is about the question whether Zurgo would be exiled or not if he get hit by Magma Spray while he’s indestructible. The answer is no, he wouldn’t.

          • Aidan

            idiot

  • overhype

    Bile Blight says hi.

  • Miles

    Dies to Bile Blight

    • DeathMetalLlama

Tarmogoyf dies to Doom Blade, does that mean he sucks too?

      • Antares

According to PWSaM (People Who Suck at Magic), yes it does. They will continue to stress how much Tarmogoyf stinks because he dies to doomblade even AFTER they’ve died to Tarmogoyf beatdown. :D

        • DeathMetalLlama

          You, I like you

  • Alex

generator servant to bring him out turn 3

  • Minja

I’m curious what I’d need to make this guy a good commander. Thinking of something like you’d use with Oros.
I’m definitely thinking of trying to make him into a battalion-like deck with Tajic, or should I stick with evasion and focusing on making Zurgo big like a Voltron deck? Opinions?

    • Ananeos

Black for searching, white for more searching, and all three colors support massive board wipes. Zurgo has the ability to live through the carnage and rack up to 21 while your opponents are scrambling to regain their board presence. I think it is pretty obvious what route you should be taking.

    • Ross Arnold

Did somebody say worldslayer? Before anyone says anything about the nature of EDH, I know. But it’s hilarious.

      • Minja

Already planning on it. Just gotta get my hands on one.
