Announcement

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Who wants to wager zombies is one of the tribes?

    • Hedronal

If so, I hope for esper to fit with Amonkhet.

  • Writerofthings

    I just need Phyrexian back.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Hopefully we see a Phyrexian tribal leader. That’d be fun.

      • Hedronal

First idea: “If you would pay for one phyrexian mana, you may pay 1 life instead.”

  • Togglerise

Zombies, Elves, Soldiers, Goblins and some random blue tribe….

    • Dr. Burn Crow

It’s going to be only 4 decks.

      • Happy the Real Cat

        is this confirmed?

        • Jazzyboy1

Yah, it was in the announcement

        • Dr. Burn Crow

My source is the mothersite, so I’d say at least 16 percent sure.

    • Michael Edgecomb

if it were color based – some random blue tribe would have to be merfolk.

  • Derek Mullins

I love that the fall set name is definitely matching up with the idea of a mesoamerican theme; maybe they thought the atlazan name produced too much confusion? A joke, honestly, but I do like that it sounds that way.

  • Liam Maiher

I definitely think 4/5 color humans will be one of the decks as its on Maro”s “short list”. Another strong possibility is slivers. But I think it’s safe to assume that some combination of elves/goblins/zombies will be included. It is pretty odd that there are only 4 decks instead of 5.

  • WerewolfHope

Guys, lets be real for a second. We are going to get Werewolves and a good Werewolf (tribal) legendary creature finally :D

    • Yamato Iouko

Please this. Tolovar hasn’t gotten a card yet, either.

      • WerewolfHope

Exactly. This is why it is perfect.

        • Yamato Iouko

Given the magic associated with the Mondronen pack, it’d also make sense for him to provide some level of transformation control.

    • Jonathan Reynolds

It seems unlikely unless they want to return to non-flip werewolves. Plus, they probably want tribes that can be supported in upcoming standard sets.

      • joeymunn7 .

They can just print a new flip legend and thats it. Hell what if all 4 were flip commanders based on popular tribes?

  • Imalwaysangry

I doubt we see goblins, zombies, or elves since they all are already so well supported. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a lot of types that could be mixed here and there (because they linked the Cat Monkey in the announcement). Like Maybe a wizard tribal in blue black, and a warrior tribal in red green? With humans, aven, orcs, etc spread throughout.

    • WerewolfHope

If you read the article reveal, they said that they are doing the most popular and interesting tribes. So Zombies will probably be one of the decks. We also have never had (specifically) a legendary zombie that cares about other zombies.

      • i mean Grim Grin and Mikhaeus are pretty damn fine. but you aren’t wrong either not “specifically”

  • Kitnz

    GW Cat commander, please!

    • Jonathan Reynolds

The Wily Bandar mention in the announcement could have been a clue to that. I could see them doing a cat tribal deck.

      • Kitnz

Idk… they could totally be aiming to build a Monkey tribal deck :P

    • Hedronal

      Or RGW please.

      • Kitnz

I started planning out a RGW Cat tribal (with Samut as general, flavor-wise as a crazy warrior cat lady?) and have been kinda let down by the addition of red. There’s a few, but my inclusion of Ember Swallower isn’t great since it’s a straight-up Elemental despite looking like a cat. And the new red cat-looking things from Amonkhet have the creature-type “Manticore”, whatever that is… Oh well!

        • Hedronal

I was thinking more like Marisi’s Twinclaws, although upon looking there’s not so much in the red cat camp on gatherer. Also, sounds like you mean non-anthropomorphic cats now, whoops.

  • Jordan

At this point, we need a phoenix tribal. Or elemental…

    • Nicolas Parliament

i totally agree with phoenix tribal, but the elemental idea is already so strong in commander

  • Jonathan Reynolds

If slivers are not one of the tribes, then I expect each deck to features two tribes, like human wizards.

  • Shane

    Cat, naga, vampire, and faerie
That’s my locked in answer, now we wait :3

I need an esper spirit commander though, one that will fit the orzhov and the drogskol of innistrad, till then, oloro fits nicely :)

    • Nicolas Parliament

please tell me you run godhead of awe in that edh you mentioned xD

      • Shane

Yes, with drogskol captain and infinite reflection

      • Shane

I run each avatar spirit that I can in that deck, they all are prettty good

  • Felix Kamm

when there are 4 decks, maby its like one mono deck, one dual deck, one 3-color and one 4-color.
where the mono deck has the color that is missing at the 4-color deck.

  • Envy is Random

So UB Zombie, RU Wizards, GB Elves, and RW Soldiers are my guesses. Most likely gonna be other colors and mono colors though, not all dual colored.

  • just got done making a tribal zombe deck and now i might have more than i could ever hope for though its not confirmed its zombies. although it would be a reasonable idea to think it is as some staple zombies need reprints badly. death baron isnt a cheap card.

  • Kameenook

    Friends prediction

    GR: Elemental
    BR: Vampire
    UB: zombie
    GW: Humans
    UW: spirits

Update, found out there are only four decks.

    Friend Predicts
    5C Elemental
    Abzan Humans (aristocrat/cult sacrifice)
    UB Faeries
    RW Soldier tribal

    I think it’ll be
    5C slivers.
    5C dragons
    Abzan Humans (aristocrat/sacrifice)
    UB Zombies

    • Jonathan Reynolds

There will only be four decks and they will not focus on a balanced color pie.

    • joeymunn7 .

Love how everyone is forgetting that everyone has been complaining about a lack of a good werewolf commander. Also I think we might get a R/U thopter commander which would be sweet.

      • Hedronal

Neither of those words is accurately everyone though. That’s overstating that tribe’s popularity. Granted, I so want a RG werewolf tribal commander, but it’s likely not close to everyone wanting it.

        • joeymunn7 .

Im just saying im going to be mad if we get goblins, vamps, slivers, zombies because we have enough of them at this point and dont need anymore for awhile. werewolfs have 1 legend and hes not very good.

          • Hedronal

As a werewolf, Ulrich is great. Powerful, balanced, swingy, etc. As a commander he doesn’t solve the issue of werewolves rarely getting to be on their back faces is all.

Goblins haven’t gotten tribal in awhile, and zombies lack a dedicated commander, so don’t count them out of the running until official confirmation is available. Technically don’t count the others out either, but they’re less likely.

          • joeymunn7 .

Id be only fine with zombies if its esper. If not its a waste of time.

          • Hedronal

White mana aligned zombies have thus far only been an Amonkhet thing though. What’s wrong with a commander that fits say, the fairly large amount of red ones instead? Not that I don’t want an esper zombie commander.

    • PrissyRose

      Abzan Elves perhaps?

  • Soren Szilver

    commander my hopes/predictions:
    Monocolored
White: spirits or human (i would want kor but i know it wont happen)
    Blue: merfolk
    Black: vampires or zombies
    red: dragon or goblin
    green: elves

also noticed that commander is coming out in summer this time. inst it usually late fall?

    • Jonathan Reynolds

There will only be four decks.

  • theEternalPilgrims

zombies, elves, goblins and spirits, are my guesses.

    • TogetherAlone

It better not be elves since we got elf tribal in commander set two years ago.

      • Hedronal

In green, but elves are also black.

        • TogetherAlone

ok but its still elves. I would rather another green tribe be represented. Like snakes since we are never going back to kamigawa :/

          • Hedronal

Can we please just errata all nagas to snakes, or all things that care about one to care about both?

  • theEternalPilgrims

Also, they changed Atlazan to Ixalan? I prefered Atlazan but whatever. Mesoamerican themed plane here we come. More Gods maybe? Back to back ancient mythology might get tiring after just leaving Amonkhet though…

    • Derek Mullins

I mentioned it below, but something tells me that the confusion over the first name (atlantis) might have been impetus for the change. Could even have to do with actual language translation, but I’m not a linguist. In any case, I’m kind of excited, but you make a good point.

    • Hedronal

For me at least, the “atl” in Atlazan is a bumpy syllable, it doesn’t roll of the tongue (or at least not mine) at all. Maybe that’s why the change.

  • Shane

Wish they’d try to renew ninjas with this since they won’t be going back to kamigawa :/ I need some new ninjitsu

  • Kevan Kramer

Squirrels, 5-color changeling legendary (shuts everyone up forever), cats, and to truly mess with people..creatures with no types whatsoever

    • Sam Chi

      morphs

      • Hedronal

I play a morph commander deck, leader is the GU Ezuri.

    • Hedronal

Finally, someone else who mentions squirrels here. My first decent deck was squirrels, so I’m attached to the tribe enough to have it as my phone wallpaper, so a legend would be awesome. I don’t dare to expect one though, other tribes could be supported with more fun coming to other players from them.

Also typeless creatures are morphs, which I use the GU Ezuri for a deck about.

  • joeymunn7 .

Calling it now. 2 of the 4 has to be Esper Zombies and we really really really need a good R/G Werewolf legend. This will be the perfect time to bring werewolfs up to the level of zombies and vampires.

    • Shawn Michael Diaz

Do we really want any more Innistrad tribal cards? SOI isn’t even out of standard and all those tribal factions just got cards. I’d be down for a werewolf legend but I can’t say it’s be excited to see a werewolf deck

      • joeymunn7 .

reason why its not exciting seeing a werewolf deck is because thy have akways lacked support. there are only a handfull of card that are not creatures that support werewolfs also. As for SOI being in standard that has nothing to do with the commander products because these are not standard playable cards. Werewolfs are one of the few tribes left without a real trible legend and need more support and considering we just left innistrad I doubt we will go back any time soon so this might be the only relevant chance to make one.

        • Shawn Michael Diaz

You can’t say it has nothing to do with commander products. Every standard set is playable in Commander. I want a serviceable werewolf legend, but not as a commander products commander. Perhaps as a partner commander?

          • Hedronal

Partner is a nice idea, but a werewolf commander would be mostly for players (like me) who want to make a deck around the tribe, so a partner would be left out.

The point of a werewolf commander would have to be solving the problems 1: there’s nearly always someone who can cast a spell on any turn including yours, and 2: there’s very frequently someone who can cast two spells on its own turn. Werewolves need a tribal commander to be a deck because they’re consistently just on their front faces.

Given that, a premade deck with a werewolf tribal commander would have to be largely about werewolves. That said, there are generally three commander slots per premade deck, so it could be an alternate. Also, some decks could be multi-tribal, with support and synergy cards for a few in one place. That would have the bonus of making choose a tribe cards (ex. Adaptive Automaton) more helpful choices for inclusion there.

          • Shawn Michael Diaz

Yeah I’m imagining something like GR or Jund Goblin Tribal on the box with a partner werewolf and a partner Vampire maybe? Even if the theme is tribal, they don’t have to make all the cards super narrow. Honestly I think partner would be great for werewolves because you could expand the color range to better support the archetype (adding white does a lot for werewolves I think given human creature type synergies). Also they managed to introduce some not bad flip-wolves that don’t rely on opponents casting spells with a 60-card constructed tempo. Werewolves need their tribal commander, but they’ve gotten a lot of love in recent history is all. Goblins on the other hand could take the spotlight since goblin tribal hasn’t been a thing since like MM13 and that was pretty weak tribal.

          • Hedronal

Good point on the partner-expanded color identity, I had not thought of that, and it could make for a much more powerful and varied deckbuilding/play experience. Looking for a pre-existing partner, Bruse Tarl, Kraum, Ravos and Tymna look promising.

  • Matt Wasser

I would love one of the decks is Slivers. I would like to see new slivers. Though I think the decks will be of races from the fall set Ixalan.

  • PrissyRose

    my guesses are

    Abzan Elf Commander
5c Slivers with a new “Sliver Queen” esque commander
    Grixis Zombie Commander
    Temur or 5c Elemental.dec

    unrealistically

would be down for Dimir Pirates tbh
    5c God Tribal

    • Hedronal

Why would elves dip into white mana? Also, not Esper zombies after Amonkhet?

      • PrissyRose

for a token theme perhaps, idk it just makes sense to me tho I admit c14 did have an elf theme so probably wont be elves!

I think White zombies are pretty Exclusively Amonkhet, unless they do Embalm in the commander set as a major theme I doubt it will show up!

        • Hedronal

After looking through a gatherer search of WURG zombies:
          1. Black of course
          2. Red
          3. Blue (Innistrad twice)
          4. Green
          5. White

White will likely get a boost in zombie numbers after HoD. There’s decent reasons for a load of possible color identities.

    • Shagoth

White is in half of them, the other colors are in 3/4s of them.

    • Timothy Barker

      Gimme an assassin trible!

      • PrissyRose

assassin Tribal would be neat af, tho I have no idea what direction to go with assassin tribal maybe doomblade ebt

        • Timothy Barker

          queen marchesa rwb deck

  • xxxx

I would love to see mono white angel tribal.

  • MrAptronym

I want odd, but mildly supported tribes! Give me insects!

  • MFairservice

    NOOGLE TRIBAL!!!!

  • Bige Boiy

    hyped for tribal crab

  • Dr. Burn Crow

I would love to see a proper Horror deck. I love horrors, I have since Odyssey, when I got the preconstructed deck with Braids in it.
Man, it’s so sad Braids isn’t Commander legal. She was my first Legendary.

    • PrissyRose

Dimir Horrors would be a legit cool build, and a tribe that could use some support and build around def a cool idea tbh

I use to think Braids would be a legit okay commander so we allowed in our playgroup and I underestimated how powerful she is as a stax commander, we instantly house rules rebanned her lol

      • Dr. Burn Crow

        She’s incredible, that’s why she’ll always be my murder-waifu.

    • <3 HORRORS

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Things I want more than anything else here – shameless Shadowmoor/Eventide land reprints, Mutavault reprint because it deserves to be in every deck already, and GR Goblin tribal and any GW tribal.

  • Johan K

Wizard and ooze tribal hype! (please no goblins or elves)

    • PrissyRose

Jund Ooze would be legitimately cool

  • Aarhg

If they do an elemental tribal deck for Commader 2017, I would be so happy. I’m already building one, so more juicy cards would be too perfect.

Also, Ixalan sounds a tiny bit like Atlazan. That’s mildly interesting.

    • Timothy Barker

That’s cause they replaced the name atlazan with ixalan. It says on the booster packs page that they were just trials on the names and stuff.

  • Delipha

Dragons pls! Also Slivers would be my first guess, then Elementals. No idea about the other two

    • CnBCustoms

Please no more Slivers… My psyche can only take so much…

  • Shawn Michael Diaz

Dragons, zombies, vampires, and spirits don’t deserve a deck. There’s so much support for all of them either throughout all of magic or specifically in the recent past. I want Wizards, Ooze, Treefolk, Goblins haven’t seen the spotlight in a bit. God I forgot all about Wizard tribal until writing this. Pls Wizards, give me the Wizard tribal! Better yet, the Bird Wizard tribal!!!

    • Horrors have rarely if ever get their due. =P

Horrors have been my favorite creature type for a while, though to be fair elements and spirits come in close behind, mainly because they’re usually deeply awesome monstrosities but they also usually have dirtbag mechanics that I love. I’m still waiting for another set that focuses on horrors, especially black ones; the last time we got a lot of horrors, they were all different colors thanks to Phyrexia’s new every-color association.

  • It’s an Atlantis-themed merfolk-heavy set. Kiora’s gonna be in it.

  • Chris

    Commander #1 – GB

    3/5

    1/8

    • Dr. Burn Crow

I like the idea behind these, though the execution could use some tweaking.
Elf Assassin is great and I love the idea behind a Dwarf Cleric.
I’d like to see something like an ooze druid and some kind of goblin vampire.
A goblin vampire or goblin zombie would be incredible.

      • Tom

I like the idea of one major creature type, and one minor creature type support. Ninja Goblin, Insect Warrior, Lizard Soldier, Merfolk Shaman.

  • Vibue

I think a 5c all lord changeling deck would be funny..

  • PrissyRose

a cool Kraken, Sea Serpent. Octopus UG deck would be dope af

  • PrissyRose

    Scarecrow Tribal possibly?

  • PrissyRose

also what you guys think the commanders “gimmick” is going to be?

    • Wise Guy

Probably something that ties into the tribal theme.

  • xxxx

I’m calling it now: UNICORN tribal!!!

  • Hedronal

Of note: There will be Four commander 2017 decks, not five as it’s not color pie based.

  • Jonathan Reynolds

In other news, Wizards announced another masters set for 2017: Iconic Masters. They say its full of iconic cards, but it’s really just them trying to release a masters set that is not bound to any particular format. It comes out November 17th.

    • PrissyRose

so Dragons, Angels, Sphinxes, Hydras, I forget Black’s iconic creature its slipping my mind

      • j j

        demons,zombies.

        • Hedronal

It would be demons in this case, as the rest listed were the iconic big creature types.
Big: Angels, Sphinxes, Demons, Dragons, Hydras
Small: Soldiers, Merfolk, Zombies, Goblins, Elves

          • Kahai

The characteristic races are: Humans (should be Kor), Merfolk, Zombies (and Vampires), Goblins, and Elves.

          • Hedronal

True, zombies and vampires. In as much as black has two smaller races, white keeps jumping around (humans, kithkin, kor, leonin, etc). If class creature types count too though, soldiers would likely have the most support. That does also fit with white mana’s idea of treating everyone the same.

          • If there was decency in the universe then Horrors would be on there somewhere. =<

  • Deadly Berry

Crossing fingers for a Lhurgoyf tribal that includes Tarmogoyf.

    • Shagoth

“Lhurgoyfs you control get +1/+1 for each Lhurgoyf card in your graveyard”

  • Eino Kukalie

cause commander is all about big creatures, i hope UG kraken / leviathan lord, maybe elvish piper style. WB demon angel animator lord, RB dragon lord with enter battlefield ability: reveal top 13 cards top of your deck, opponent choices dragon card and puts that on battlefield on your control. UR Thopter lord, sacrifice artifact to make 1/1 thopter. GW Wurm lord, 2: sacrifice land put 3/3 gw wurm token battlefield. all lords give +1/+1 to tribes they support as usual.

    • PrissyRose

very cool designs would definitely pick up the Kraken deck

    • Dr. Burn Crow

      Gimme dat thoptor lord.

  • Marvin Sürig

Whaaaat? Ixalan? What about my Aztec Setting named Atlazan?
In between I’ve read 4 Decks in one of the Comments anyone mind telling me where to find that information?

    • Hedronal

The recent article “Announcing Commander (2017 Edition) on the mainsite.

“This year, Commander decks return with Commander (2017 Edition) on August 25, 2017*. The set features four new tribal-themed, 100-card decks including 56 all-new Magic cards legal in Vintage and Legacy.

Yes, we are releasing four decks this year instead of the normal five, since this year’s theme isn’t based on the color wheel but some of Magic’s most popular, and interesting, tribes!”

      • Marvin Sürig

Okay. Thank you^^ Found it ;)
I wonder if they make four Five coloured decks or at least one or two. At least Maro once said (as far as I know) five colored would be possible but that would be something different than five five colored decks. In the most cases we got one Reprint Commander (except last time) from what we have Dragons would be possible as everything except four colored and my exceptions are high (altough I don’t want it because I already have enough Dragons XD). We could get a mono Red, Black-Red or Red-Green, as far as I know every three colored combination with red in it and even fivecolored with Scion.

I have a feeling we get one Eldrazi Tribal Colorless with Wastes and colorless Special-lands including one of the Titans (guess is one of the non Annihilator). And maybe five colored Artifact Deck with Scarecrows.
I totaly doubt it but I would celebrate a five colored Changeling EDH where we get some new Changelings, some good shapeshifters and as Reprint Commander Karona because she totally Supports Changelings xD

    • PrissyRose

Ixalan could still be MesoAmerican themed, after all many Nahuatl words have the letter x in them!

It would sound like Ichalan if that is the case seeing in Nahuatl the x makes a ch sound :D

  • Jude

Lol plants. Weed tribal lets do this

  • Yikabar

    Treefolks, Angels, Drakes, and Wolf/Werewolf

    • Dr. Burn Crow

Probably not werewolves because they said flip cards are cost prohibitive to print in supplemental sets.

      • Hedronal

        Where was that said?

        • Dr. Burn Crow

Some article ages ago, I don’t remember when exactly, but it was between Avacyn Restored and that year’s commander product, I think. That’s why we haven’t seen a bunch of double sided reprints in stuff like Commander or in Intro Packs

          • Hedronal

Found it on Blogatog, thanks. It also said that printing just a couple of double faced cards anywhere is unlikely, as they require their own sheet.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

Then they printed the Origin walkers.

          • Hedronal

Good point. My best guess as to fitting both paradigms: ~”It’s the last core set, so lets give it some leeway.” Also it was words like “unlikely”, so not impossible, similar to Madness getting a high rating on the Storm Scale just before it came back.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

I just hope we get interesting new tribal commanders. Werewolves could use a better one than Ulrich, I’d love to see Thopters get one, an Ooze lord would blow my mind and I’ve always wanted to see a viable Rogues tribal EDH.

          • Hedronal

Thopters would be great, the closest is Master Trinketeer who is mainly servos.

          • Dr. Burn Crow

I just realized how great Jeskai thopter lord would be.
I mean, Breya is sort of that, but I want something that keeps pumping out and pumping up thopters.

          • Hedronal

Breya is a thopter lord in the same way Master Trinketeer is, which is to say it’s secondary to something. Thopter commander must have no other before them.

          • TJ

Yeah, but you could fill the entire sheet with the walkers, not affecting the overall print, and it remains unlikely unless they do a complete cycle of something else

That’s a bummer. I just hope they picked interesting tribes and not just the normal elves/soldiers I’ve been seeing since I was young.

  • Shagoth

    Why is Phblt on here?

    • PrissyRose

Hmm, don’t you think the new Commander product is coming relatively quickly on the heels of the previous one? Someone mentioned already earlier Partner so could it be we’re getting some leftovers from the four coloured brainstorming sessions? I can imagine they ended up with more suggestions than they used once they decided to go with the mechanic.
As for wishlisting, I’d really like an Esper spirit commander even though it is a well-supported tribe. And someone also mentioned Abzan elf which I dig too, but elves really are probably too represented as they are. I don’t want to see goblins either, they have plenty of commanders already and I’ve been sick of them for years. And defintely not zombies! Would really like some slightly more obscure tribes supported, the idea about primary and secodary tribe(s) was great.
Insects were mentioned, I have a soft spot for that as one of my first EDH decks was a Xira Arien insect tribal which was terrible! Somehow that brings to mind another pet peeve, I’d love a faerie tribal with green in it, could do sweet Homelands reprints! :D

It’s the same timing it usually is, it’s the end of the summer. It’s a very early announcement though being as we won’t see it for about 3 months
Edit, guess it’s a lot earlier release than last time by about 3 months so actually these are coming out a lot earlier. Well either way players love commander so it’s nice for commander products and like you mentioned it is prob bc they have left over cards and ideas, 4 color was a very ambitious theme that definitely took a lot of work so there was prob a lot of early drafts for it

  • PrissyRose

Im really hoping for RGB Oozes, WU Spirits, 5c Elementals, GU Krakens

  • MagicGALAXY

I hope we get a Squirrel legend. That would be sick. Maybe a GW token deck. Doesn’t have to be the main commander of the deck either. I just want my Squirrel commander.

    • Hedronal

Ditto that. My first decent deck was casual squirrels, and I still have it.

    • PrissyRose

maybe just pest theme so include Rats, squirrels, spiders, and insects

    • Caleb Martin

I couldn’t find where, but I remember seeing on Blogtog that MaRo would try to get a legendary squirrel into Norse world to be Ratatosk. I’ll give you the link if I find it

  • Jeremy Olivier

I wanna see a jund goblin commander so i can do some nonsense

    • rickey owen

      Shatter gang brothers

      • Jeremy Olivier

Nah shatter gang might as well not even be called a goblin i wanna see jund goblin tribal be a thing not another combo deck with goblins in it that happens to be jund

        • Hedronal

I hope for that as well, but I more hope for some even less supported tribes to get commanders here.

  • Michial Lango

I would like to see either an humans or an centaurs commander deck, well an Merfolk commander would also be interesting, LOL!!
