Whenever Medomai the Ageless deals combat damage to a player, take an extra turn after this one.

Medomai the Ageless can’t attack during extra turns.

  • Shady

    Should be U/B!

    • Brandon Sauer

If you read the flavour for him and the city he inhabits (Meletis) no, he shouldn’t be.

      • Pcbino

Can you give me a link to flavour/story for him? I would love to read more.

        • YouGotFranked

It’s mentioned in the “Planewalker’s Guide to Theros part 2″ on the mothership.

          • Pcbino

            Awesome. Thank you.

  • Brandon Sauer

The person who spoiled this mentioned this card before Medomai was ever announced; so its more than likely real.

  • maverick

kinda sounds op and pretty broken in legacy anyways first turn reanimate bleh

  • Leo

That’s pretty damn cool…I mean, this + Thassa ….!!! Only Standard and EDH play obviously but finally, not a 1$ mythic!

  • Kevan Kramer

If it is real…its very flavorful if you have read about this guy’s story.

  • Levi Warren

This is the legend they were talking about that has an ability of one of the power 9. Elegant. Not broken and a very niche card, the way a mythic should be.

  • Orion Moore

If real, would turns stack with Aurelia, the war leader? On the non-extra turns that is. If so America’s got a new toy in standard. Thrice a lady leader.

    • Hi

Yes, as long as it dealt damage, so with legion’s initiative on the field u can make this many more turns…

      • Lol

        u nid haste though

        • CodyGozRawr

          Legion’s initiative gives haste retard

      • Orion Moore

        Indeed!

      • GramMAR Freak

“Medomai the Ageless can’t attack during extra turns.”

If what I’m gathering from your comment there is correct, then you’re saying you would attack, take your extra turn after blinking Medomai, and attack again when he comes back to get another extra turn or two depending on whether Aurelia is there, but the static ability merely says “can’t attack during extra turns,” so wouldn’t that cancel that play? It’s not saying he can’t attack if he was on the field when you started your extra turn, and it’s not saying anything to the extent of giving him summoning sickness, so Haste wouldn’t do anything for him, he merely can’t attack during this turn regardless of how you trick him around the battlefield. In theory, even casting another Medomai and giving it haste wouldn’t allow that Medomai to attack either. You’d have to attack with him multiple times in one turn via Aurelia, double strike, or other tricks to have him deal separate damage multiple times in one turn to exploit his time walk.

At least that’s how I understand it.

As it’s worded, Medomai wouldn’t even be able to attack during extra turns granted another way, like through Temporal Mastery. It’s a very simple “can’t attack during extra turns.”

        • David Fitzsimmons

If this is the final official text, then you are right, he can never attack on extra turns no matter the source. Probably to prevent blinking him over and over to count as a new card. Forcing multiple combat phases is really the only option to get many turns at a time with him.wait…. double strike means two extra turns instead of one right?

          • GramMAR Freak

Well, how it’s written, yes double strike should be 2 extra turns. With double strike you deal damage twice, so if you could give him double strike and have an Aurelia out, then you could potentially get 4 turns off of him.

          • Shadow921

fire shrieker could be in a lot of decks with this guy. america with artifact ramp could be a good idea

        • CodyGozRawr

No you would flicker Aurelia after the first combat phase, then she attacks and another one goes on the stack, then you flicker Aurelia and she enters in as a new instance and this instance of her hasn’t attacked this turn, so she attacks, adding another extra combat phase to the stack, now this is all during the same turn, so medomai would be able to keep attacking, and hopefully hitting a player.

          • GramMAR Freak

If that’s how it works, why don’t people just do that with Aurelia now? You don’t need extra turns if you’re just going to deal that much combat damage in a turn. I was given the impression that you can only get one additional combat phase from Aurelia.

          • CodyGozRawr

People do, you can also soulbond her to dead-eye navigator, and just get a ton of extra attacks.

  • Andy Dondes

too broken to be real. and sphinxes aren´t a part of greek mythology

    • LeonFA

      1) We have confirmation of a “Card that causes the effect of one of the Power Nine whenever it deals combat damage to a player officially from WotC.
      2) This is official art, so this can be chalked up to “deal with it”.

    • Michael. Prier

You obviously have never read about the Sphinx of Thebes, which is very popular in Greek mythology.

    • David Fitzsimmons

Here is a riddle for you

Who spoke this famous riddle, “What goes on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on
three legs in the evening?”? And WHERE did she speak it?

      • Joshua McTiernan

        Who said it?

  • Berdo18

Considering that this is a mono colored block (yes i know that not everything has to be mono-colored), that devotion stresses mono-colored cards, that although these rules match with one of the “thing sot expect from theros” it does match the idea of medomia from the planes walker’s guide, and that although there might be some multicolored cards, we have already seen 2 multicolor (ajax and cymede + destructive revelry) and know that a multi colored minotaur is coming, it seems unlikely for them to release another multicolored so soon, this seems fake. Also this was found late after the art and “things to expect from theros” was released. It is very plausible that someone put a few things together in that time and portrayed it as the official card. Also that saboteur ability sound more like a U/B rather that a U/W.

    • David Fitzsimmons

This appears to be yet another Text only spoiler as the image is the official card art, I will be doing a bit of research into WHERE this spoiler originated, if it turns out someone was talking about this before the card’s name was officially spoiled then we have another situation like Thasa God of the Sea where someone had info proven right through a tiny bit of info later.

I will say that in the past for mono color sets, legendary creatures were always the most likely to be multicolored, heck I think Innistrad was one of the few times that I seen a handful of non-legendary multi-color in a mono-color set.

So far the confirmed legendary multi-color we have in this Theros set is Anax and Cymede. Card represents one of the big personalities in Akros so that could be the same with Medomai who probably counts as ‘leader/ruler’ for Meletis

Until I get more info on this spoiler, I am hesitant on it. This is not like the bident where there was a TON of effort to make it if it’s fake within such a SHORT time of official reveal of the existence of the weapons as a cycle. This is just a Text based spoiler, easy to crank out in a short time.

      • YouGotFranked

Either Oracles or Wizard’s very poor NDA enforcement measures.

        • David Fitzsimmons

you can NEVER completely protect against leaks. Information gets out in one form or another. Heck I won’t be surprised if some of these are being done on purpose through Wizards to fit with the whole Oracle and prophecy thing that is prevalent in nearly all greek myths. Personally I think a good chunk of it is just typical leaks as usual.

          • guest

agreed and i hope it is on purpose to set the scene for that greek mythology theme

  • David Fitzsimmons

Gotta love how this set seems to have ‘oracles’ speculating on these cards. Two days before this Sphinx was officially revealed by name in the second Planeswalker Guide to Theros, someone dropped the name in the middle of a speculation thread out of the blue, along with several other possible spoilers

08-26-2013, 08:45 PM -”Originally Posted by Trollcreature

Yesterday, 09:06 PM – “Originally Posted by Trollcreature

08-26-2013, 09:25 PM – “Originally Posted by Trollcreature

Yesterday, 08:49 PM – “Originally Posted by Trollcreature

read close to W enchantment. sac~ remove target non-enchantment
creature from the game, its controller gains life = to power. May also
just be creature and non-enchantment creature.

And to my knowledge it will be Nimbus mazes cycle of lands in this block.”

I couldn’t find the post but he also apparently mentioned Magma Jets to be in the set as well.
Now to hope and see how much more of his prophecies are proven true.

    • Nordic

Could you give me a link to this thread, would love to see what else he speculated/leaked UvU

      • David Fitzsimmons

This link will take a bit to show up as a warning, all posts with links get an automatic waiting period for moderation to prevent spam bots.
The link is to a thread that is trying to archive every spoiler he is hinting at on top of a few other people who appear to be agreeing or disagreeing with his statements. Link is in my next reply

EDIT: the dude created his account the same day he started posting the spoilers. Just an additional bit of interesting information.

    • Jordan

well, mark rosewater said one monster would have a power nine ability when it hit a player. this fits.

  • Mike

You’re supposed to be the spoiler site – do some homework yourself instead of just passing it off to the players to decide.

Determining if a card is real or fake is explicitly your job.

    • David Fitzsimmons

you must be new here. This site does not post EVERY spoiler that comes it’s way, it selects the spoilers with some of the highest probability in possibly being real. Then we nitpick on the validity of the spoilers that do get posted.

  • Somnom

If this is real, my Rafiq EDH deck has a new best friend.

    • Ben Meszaros

      Same!

  • CodyGozRawr

Mirror gallery, rite of replication, parallel lives, attack…

    • frwfwrfw

if its a 2/2, the game is over before you take your next 11 turns

      • CodyGozRawr

Idk what you mean, also if I have 11 turns coming up I don’t need her anymore, and a 2/2 for 6 seems highly unlikely.

    • David Fitzsimmons

I would also shove Lighthouse Chronologist and Ral Zarek into that deck for extra time related shenanigans.

      • CodyGozRawr

        XD

  • Ben Meszaros

From yesterday’s preview article – “Medomai, the wandering oracle. The wise and ancient sphinx Medomai is not a consistent resident of Meletis. Instead, he appears a few times a year during moments of historical import, such as religious ceremonies, coronations, and the onset of wars. Medomai has been part of Meletis’s history for many decades, seeming to possess cryptic knowledge of future events. His arrival is not necessarily seen as a good omen, as his predictions can be dire.”

Flavor-wise, these abilities don’t necessarily fit the bill. That’s a long ways from discrediting the spoiler, but worth noting.

    • David Fitzsimmons

Well he clearly has some sort of rule with futures but really can’t take in active part in changing them if that makes any sense. To me future and prophecies go hand in hand so it makes sense at least with that little bit and really doesn’t need much more explanation.

Also funny thing is that this card’s name and the fact it “…his deals combat damage is a Time Walk at a price” was posted rather randomly in the middle of a speculation thread by a guy who made his account the same day he posted that comment. It was posted 3 days ago, 2 days before Medomai’s lore was even posted on the Wizards site. So the credibility in this spoiler is in the fact the dude clearly has some kind of access to official information before anyone else.

    • GramMAR Freak

In this case it might make more sense if when it deals combat damage you should flip a coin, if you win the flip take an extra turn, and if you lose the flip you lose a turn. I think that’d be neat anyway.

  • Mark Rosewater

“I CAN’T GET NO, CONFIRMATION!”- The Trolling Stones

  • j0e

Does anyone else think he looks creepy as hell?

    • David Fitzsimmons

I feel the same way about nearly EVERY male sphinx MtG creates. They all look like creepy bearded dudes just about or got some stupid mask on

  • Mason

i got to say probably not real mostly cause if you have many passive enhancements that trigger in stages on you turn this guy will make them 2 times as good and make the game way easier, but this is jest my opinion.

    • David Fitzsimmons

Read the comments please, particularly my comments in particular.

His name was officially spoiled yesterday. Three days ago someone said in the middle of a speculation thread that the Time Walk on combat damage was a sphinx named Medomai. Two days before any official information on the character.

His ability specifics may be a bit in error due to typing information he got after hearing it and mis remembering things, but he successfuly predicted the name.

  • Snapscasted

    Its rick rubin

  • MtgMind-Welder98

Yah I think it is real

    • David Fitzsimmons

This card you posted is a mock up based on what we know, not the official one.

HOWEVER the likelyhood of the text being real or at least partially is shockingly high. Two days before this guy’s name was officialy spoiled in the Planeswalker Guide, a user named Trollcreature posted this in some thread, “Its a U/W Legend named Medomai, and his deals combat damage is a Time Walk at a price.” Once Medomai was officially unveiled lore wise and the name confirmed as real, everyone beleived Trollcreature and he returned with more tidbits on Medomai’s abilities.

So even without card scan, medomai is all but confirmed as real.

      • MtgMind-Welder98

The only thing we don’t know is if it is a mythic or a rare, but it will probably be a mythic.

  • Jordan

mark rosewater said one monster would have a power nine ability when it hit a player. this fits.
