• Urdothor

    More combat steps for Yidris!

  • Derek Mullins

Yes! This one actually may be viable; however, it has a check clause to it, so you’ll need to blink it, like Aurelia.

  • magicporauz

    i can smell…………ifinit. combo :D
    jipi!

  • Jeffrey Zom

    Lightning Runner combo?

  • Erik López Barcelar

What does that “if he hasnt been exerted this turn” mean exactly? Does it imply that his extert works different from others?

    • Transgendent

It just means that he can’t do it again on the second combat phase

    • Friedrich

You could exert it infinitely of it’s effect if that line of text would be missing.

    • Erik López Barcelar

Ah ok I see, its simply to prevent endless combos with him. Well, at least they tried.

  • Dr. Burn Crow

Oh no…it’s…PARTY BOY!!!! Seriously, my Adrianna EDH will adore this little scamp.

  • alexander macrae

Cool! Human Warrior bores me. I kind of wish there were more minotaurs and weird stuff than Humans, but that personal gripe aside, this is good. He’s just begging to get any of those cartouches attached to him.

  • Zombie

Oh good god it’s only 3 mana.

How many nails can Wizards put in Control’s coffin??

    • NC

What is this “corn troll” you speak of?

  • Julian Allen

    ….imagine more than one of these on the board at the same time…..beats and beats and beats and beats and beats .3. i think…you’re just dead? cause he can also still attack if you have another one on the board. the pain;w;

    • lstpcobra

It states that it can only exert itself once each turns, so you’d end up with two additional combat steps instead of the infinite amount you’re thinking of. Still good though.

      • Julian Allen

yes, but if you had more than one, they all get the chance if they can attack, not infinite but definately painful. granted thats probably not happening in standard but still a thought.

    • Jay Kilian

And with Always Watching or some other vigilance boost, this is every turn.

  • Julian Allen

also if fervor doesnt get reprinted in the same set as something named Hazomet the Fervent, i’ll be upset. mass haste needs to be a thing

    • Jordan

So you’re wanting a 3 drop enchantment that has the same cmc as the creature you want to haste? Then into a 4 drop creature that already has haste?

      • Julian Allen

not really, but if it was to get reprinted, now would be the time.every red card so far has a name that evokes rushing and speed. It’d be nice if we got mass haste for less than three mana, in all honesty. only permanent effect of that magnitude is Concordant Crossroads in green. IT probably wont happen but thematically i’d get a tickle out of it

        • Jordan

It would be nice, but that would give your opponents more time to set up a defense because you’re playing cards that do nothing the turn they come in. Granted, future turns are better, but they will have means of removal or blocking by then.

  • DarthinvaderIX

infinite combat phases deck incoming for modern/vintage?

    • Nicholas K (blackbellyshark)

      no read it agian

      • Happy The Cat

he’s talking about making tokens with haste that live until the end of the turn, so each time he untaps and makes a new token that isn’t exerted.

      • DarthinvaderIX

Not just this card, stacking all the “additional combat phase” cards and kiki jiki effects

    • Jalais

How does Modern remove the exert clause? Some form of flicker and haste?

      • Umbacano

I guess Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is the best option there, since Splinter Twin is banned.

    • guy

gentlemen, one word kiki-jiki. I love that goblin.

  • Scathain

Extra combat steps on a 3 drop? Seriously?

    • Absinthman

      Immediately thought this.

    • Jalais

Well on a pretty vulnerable 3 drop without natural haste.

    • Jordan

That you can’t use till t4. dies to anything, literally. In standard, this card is worthless. Bulk mythic

      • NothingSpecial

It’s very *playable* in Limited, at least, but not “good”. More like a 3rd or 4th pick if you go into red.

        • Jordan

And that’s pretty sad. Specially for a mythic.

  • Travis Stronach

My Iroas EDH deck will love this! The God of Victory can not be stopped!

  • KrakenHunter

    finally a decent card.

  • guy

Just when I get depressed from red stinking, they go and totally redeem themselves. Another combo for my kiki jiki edh deck? YES PLEASE.

  • NC

    …Feldon might want.

    • NC

Ooo or if I build Lovisa definite want.

  • Edward

I hope this speaks for the power level of the Mythics in this set. I want some good EDH cards from this set if nothing else

  • Ultramegalord

Seems good with the red monument and reckless bushwacker. Turn 3 monument turn 4 combat celebrant for 2 and then bushwacker I believe for 1 swing for 8 second attack hit for 3 so 11 dmg turn 4 with no other creatures and a mana left over

  • kmk888

This guy’s awesome! Seems very easy to slot into any red deck. It’s nuts with exert creatures and can’t block effects. Also goes infinite with a bunch of stuff in modern like Kikki Jikki and Mirror Mockery.

    • NothingSpecial

Huh, you’re right, this does go infinite with kiki-jiki. I hadn’t noticed. Splinter twin too, though that’s modern-banned. Could make twin decks more interesting the next time legacy cube rolls around in MtGO?

Mirror Mockery doesn’t work without some sort of help (haste)

      • kmk888

Actually, I lied. It doesn’t go infinite with Mirror Mockery even with haste, as the token is exiled at the end of combat. That’s what I get for copy/pasting from a different forum without thinking.

  • Devon Ronald MacInnis

I really hope exert doesn’t become permanent
    2U
Tap up to two target creatures. Exert those creatures

    • Guest

No it won’t, exert only occurs when the creature attacks. Otherwise, Decision Paralysis would have used that exact wording.

    • Happy The Cat

well, they did get 3u tap two target creatures, they dont untap next turn, kinda the same thing.

    • NothingSpecial

It’s a flavor thing because they’re trying to reference ancient egyption slavedrivers.

When you exert your creatures, you are actively being a slavedriver :P

  • Happy The Cat

well, if you aren’t going to allow burn I guess you get stuck printing cards like this.
worse comes to worse this just untaps all of your exerted creatures, allowing you to block next turn.

    • NothingSpecial

Yeah, this untapping your other exerted creatures seems like the real value. Hopefully we see a lot more exert this set.

    • foxboy1000

      Happy! I found you!

  • Jordan

White gets a badass planeswalker, red gets this fecal excretion. so friggin tired of it.

    • Random Guy

This is really good, not sure why you’re salty. It basically gives all your creatures double strike.

      • Happy The Cat

well, no. it’s another aggravated assualt since wizards has forgotten how to print burn. red’s mythics and rares have been getting aggro assaults for the past several sets so you can kinda see why someone would be annoyed by this.

        • Random Guy

Except it doesn’t have an activation cost and is a 4/1 creature?

          • Happy The Cat

the activation cost IS the 4/1 creature. it dies to a light breeze. and unless your opponent has a completly empty board this gets to attack only once.

          • Random Guy

Does it matter? If you’re not winning with aggravated assault on the first activation you’re probably losing. Sure it dies to Shock but that’s not a big deal, most creatures die to Harnessed Lightning anyhow. A small price to pay compared to five mana.

          • Jordan

Sock, harnessed lightning, push, darkness, etc etc etc. Hell, it even dies to Lili.

          • Happy The Cat

it kinda does, seeing as you are in red, where this is probably the only standard playabe card for red, meaning that, again, one red card will be getting played in standard by the gw beatdown that added a few dual lands and called itself “naya”

          • Jordan

            This guy gets it.

      • Jordan

what creatures? You mean your small 2/2s and 3/2s for 3 mana? Your 2/1s? Against G/B or against Ballista? Have you forgotten ballista is a thing? It doesnt even have haste. It’s a friggin MYTHIC for christs sake. This card is horribad in standard.

        • Random Guy

What? You’re saying that red is weak therefore this card is weak therefore red is weak?

          • Jordan

Red has been weak for quite a long time now. ever since they decided red needs to be shoe-horned into Small Red Aggro. Red needs to be redesigned from the ground up. It’s boring playing the exact same style of red deck, block after block after block. The last time red was interesting was Theros with Red Dev decks. And even then it wasn’t top tier. It’s last good red creatures were Thunderbreak and Eidolon.

          • Random Guy

So your comment on my summary of your complaint “red is weak therefore this card is weak therefore red is weak” is that red is weak? What?

          • NothingSpecial

What he’s saying is that this card doesn’t help Red solve the problems it has. At all. If this card literally did say “exert this creature while attacking to give other creatures you control double strike” it would be a million times better, and frankly overpowered even for a mythic x/1, at this mana cost. But this? This is bad. Not _garbage_ bad, certainly not as bad as Blue’s “god” (and red gets a good god, at least for Limited!), but they could’ve printed something that had a power in between “exert to get another combat phase for creatures that aren’t this one” and “exert to give your other creatures double strike”.

      • NothingSpecial

It gives your creatures “double strike” exclusively when your opponent doesn’t have blockers. In the kind of locked-up board state that is so common in recent limited and makes red struggle, it’s useless. It doesn’t help you get through. At all. Double strike helps you get through, because your opponent’s blockers mostly won’t be first strikers. A red mythic targeted for combat should actually help you break your opponent’s defensive line _somehow_. If your opponent actually has blockers, then even the “swing with everything” strategy problem wipes half your board and leaves your opponent’s creatures behind to block the remaining creatures from the second combat phase.

So it’s mathematically equivalent to giving your opponent’s creatures “versatile double strike” at the same time as giving your own creatures “regular double strike”. That’s terrible.

        • Random Guy

If you have higher toughness creatures it’s better than double strike since your opponent needs to block twice as many creatures. That’s somewhat rare tho.

      • Cthulhooo

        Walking.

        Ballista.

        • Random Guy

          Oh. Good point. Very unfortunate.

      • Adam Gillies

Not at all? It let’s them attack twice, which means blockers can be assigned again and there is no first strike damage. It also does no good if your attackers can’t get past the opposing players creatures and or instants. Or if you don’t have a supporting board due to any removal

        • Random Guy

In a kill condition it usually does better than double strike since they can only block half your guys. It is very different though.

  • Murilo Mazza

Awesome with Cartouche of Zeal in a burn deck.

    • Happy The Cat

you mean aggro deck, cause nothing about that combo is burn.

      • Murilo Mazza

And this is not a combo, it’s a synergy. Your comment is unnecessary, like mine, because everyone understood what I meant.

        • Jordan

Hate to do this, but “synergy”. Just for future reference.

          • Murilo Mazza

Thanks, Michael Jordan. Revised, edited and fixed.

          • Jordan

Mike’s my uncle actually. Would you rather someone correct you or would you rather to continue to spell it incorrectly and look bad.

          • Murilo Mazza

I can spell it incorrectly some times but I am sure I don’t bear a basketball player common name and that I also can speak more languages in the world than you.

          • Jordan

Speaking more languages does you no good when you can’t spell them. But uh yeah… huzzah? Hip hip hooray? Congrats? Also, Jordan was not a common name thank you. I dont think common means what you think it means. It’s hilarious when people get pissy over someone trying to help them understand their language better.

          • Murilo Mazza

You’ve spelled it wrong, you are missing an apostrophe in don’t. Have a nice day, cabaço

          • aswanlikeneck

When you first corrected the guy, they immediately thanked you and edited and made the correction. And yet you made further remarks! Quite astonishing. Also the word “common” has more than one meaning – spare this forum your failed pedantry!

          • Jordan

Thats a funny way of thanking someone. Calling someone Michael Jordan just because their last name is similar comes off as sarcastic, which sets the tone for the rest of the post. Which in turn makes the “thanks” seem sarcastic. Probably should have went with the tried and true “Thanks, I fixed it” which would have been much, much simpler. Or maybe “Hey, much appreciated”. Only 3 words.

        • NothingSpecial

It is not an “infinite combo”, but the word combo is literally just short for the english word “combination”, and literally any 2 cards together is a “combination”. So you’re much more wrong than Happy on this one.

          • Murilo Mazza

Oh, true? Like if we had no burn spell as well in this rdw idea. In magic context this is called synergy. Say it in a tournament and everyone with laugh in your face, even if you were still 12 years old.

        • Hedronal

Never assume everyone gets the same meaning from text on the internet, especially if you yourself admit that text was inaccurate.

      • kmk888

I agree with what Happy said. Aggro vs. burn is an important distinction in every format. It defines how you want the board state to look in every turn and what can you expect to draw off the top of your deck. In one of those decks this card is good and in the other it’s awful.

  • Murilo Mazza

Awesome with Olivia, Mobilized for War ;)

  • Kaiser

Well happy cat cant hate this so much, he can hate him, cause is a 4/1, but not so much…

  • Picklechu

Making an aggro deck with this and the +3+3 enchantment for one that gives -1/-1 counter
Also getting two or three of these things out can be brolen

    • Taylor Foley

That’s exactly what I was thinking

    • Jordan

And what do you do if they kill it in response with anything that kills it (which is almost anything at 1 toughness)? you just 2 for 1’d yourself while giving them an extra turn.

  • Together Alone

Ok, question. With always watching isn’t this just infinite combats?

    • Together Alone

wait never mind re-read the card.

    • MTG fan

No. it can only exert once per turn

      • Together Alone

yeah it would require a blink effect and haste to go infinite.

        • MTG fan

It would require a copycat version like splinter twin to help it go infinite.

  • Shagoth

Why is everything above the curve now? It bothers my OCD.
Funny because the card itself is kind of weak. Is this going to be the pattern with Red Mythics? Extra turn creatures that can make infinite attack steps if you require three card bank combos?

  • Jackattack

Can this go infinite with Kiki jiki??

    • Tye

      Yep.

    • Zombie

It’s also the most fragile of any Kiki Combo.

      • Shagoth

It could just make it more consistent by adding redundancies. Like how in some modern Copycat lists they add a Sun Titan for consistency, even though the titan is super expensive.

  • ConDucktor Whirl Crate God

    Kinky Jinkies says Infinite :D

    • Shagoth

      I like your typo ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      • ConDucktor Whirl Crate God

        Nah fam, it’s correct.

  • Daniel Kaine Allen

Definitely one of the better red creatures we’ve seen in a while. I always like additional combats. Just hope it being red makes it cheaper.

  • Blahblahblahbla

    Standard ‘magic wonderland’ chain:

T1: Goblin Glory chaser, T2: Aether Swooper T3: this, T4: Odric, Lunarch Marshal, T5: Lightning Runner

Attack turn 5 for 3 combat phases totaling 20 double strike, flying, menace.

    • Dylan Cromwell

I could be misunderstanding, but for that third phase of combat you would need an additional 2 energy. Not that this would be hard to get, but with only the cards you laid out, isn’t it only generating 6 energy? (2 from Aether Swooper’s ETB trigger, 2 from the first phase of combat with Lightning Runner, and 2 additional from the second phase of combat with Lightning Runner)

  • Tavis Carrillo

It dies to literally everything. EVERYTHING. “dies to doomblade” Was never an argument but this might make it one

    • Guest

      It doesn’t die to brainstorm.

      • Jacob Kodicovic

Or Rampant Growth for that matter.

      • Guest

        Doesn’t die to
        – Strafe
        – Rending Volley
        – Elvish Skysweeper
        – Wallop
        – Plummet
        – Pure//Simple
        – Searing Light
        – Terashi’s Verdict
        – Reave Soul,
        – Urgent Exorcism
        – Rend Spirit
        – etc. etc.

  • Fred Weasley

I really want to try this in my Goryo”s Vengeance deck.

    • c0hen

      goryo’s doesn’t hit it…

      • Fred Weasley

I didn’t mean as a target for Goryo’s, I meant as a creature to cast and have for when I Goryo’s Griselbrand or Emmy. This would be a pretty bad target if it was legendary lol.

  • Derek Niles

I think it needs haste to be amazing, maybe at one more CMC to make up for it but still, needs haste

Also, add this to the collection of infinite kiki jiki cards

Edit: I still really like it, I would just like it more with haste

    • David Meyers

Kiki can’t go infinite. You can only exert once per turn

      • jiki kiki

Good thing kiki makes another token of it, with haste, so you can exert it to untap kiki. which makes a token of it…

        • David Meyers

Ah, I feel silly now :)

      • Derek Niles

you can only exert Each one once per turn, each new token can then be exerted

  • Ankulay Poulay

    Oops, just got balistated.

  • That Guy

Wait, if you untap all other creatures as they are attacking (with Combat Celebrant exerting) – do they assign combat damage – or do they have to wait till the next combat step (since they untap)?

    • Taylor Foley

They still assign damage as normal

  • Stephen Scubelek

Sooooo Combat Celebrant ins’t legendary…which means you can have two of them…which means infinite combat phases if you alternate them…

    • SnowyField

Except the key words if it hasn’t been exerted this turn…

      • Stephen Scubelek

        ohhhh you right
