  • KrakenHunter

oh…. wow…. Nest of scarabs is happy

    • Ultramegalord

      Lilliana’s influence as well.

  • Jordan

I love how black is heavily invested in handing out -1/-1 counters now.

    • Thomas Luffman

Black likes doing it to opponent’s creatures to watch them suffer. Green likes doing it to their own creatures, because they’re masochistic or something. I really don’t know

  • the mad seer

i think we will have a two mana multicolored vizier cycle

    • Transgendent

I think so too, but it’s weird that the first one was ally colors (White and Blue) and this one is enemy colors (Green and Black). Usually a two color cycle would be all 5 ally pairs or all 5 enemy pairs.

      • the mad seer

i think they will either have both or have some viziers be ally pairs and some enemy pairs like uw bg rw ub rg

        • jochen

or there’s five here and the rest in Hour. if they’re all like the pair we’ve seen, i really hope so

  • Happy The Cat

aww, why couldn’t you say create that many tokens like Nest of Scarabs? you aren’t even close to as exploitable!
but, you can check my math on this if you want to, this with Nest of Scarabs is kinda a good little combo as long as you dont kill her.

  • mtagic2

i like it, it is not as good as Pyromancer -> in producing tokens, but it makes -1/-1 counters :D

  • Trevor Terry

Hello, Hapatra. Meet my good friend, “Everlasting Torment”

    http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=420850

  • Teddy Gillespie

I feel like this set was designed to wreck the G/B snake decks and I have absolutely no problem with that

  • Dr. Burn Crow

This is delightful. Papa like his poisons.

  • Kahai

Viziers will likely all be dual colored. May be hint to color changing madness in HoD.

  • alexander macrae

Absolutely loving these cheaply costed legendary creatures for commander. Her ability seems like fun to. Rewarding you for weakening/killing your opponents creatures in a certain way, not to mention she’ll trigger from your own creatures persisting. Very cool.

    • Tolle

I could be wrong. But I am pretty sure all persist creatures have white in them. Or at least hybrid white. Which makes them illegal in this guy’s deck

      • alexander macrae

Green and Black each have one very good persist creature. Green has Woodfall Primus, which is good for removal, and Black has Puppeteer Clique which is fun for graveyard shenanigans.

        • Thomas Luffman

Also thunderblust, cause omnath isn’t mad enough yet.

      • De’Elgathor

You are incorrect. Plenty of black and green creatures that are already being played in commander have persist.

      • Dr. Burn Crow

        You are wrong.

  • Tolle

I wish this had red in it too. That would be a great commander.

  • Han Solo II

    BG Snake tribal

    • I’ve had the same idea for months. There simply weren’t enough Snakes in Standard leading up to Amonkhet, but now I think there are. With this card, I think the Snake Tribe might just stand a chance!

      • Ryan Cameron

What there needs to be I think is a mythic snake in green or b/g. Well a new one anyways as I know there’s just Lotus Cobra I think?

        • There are three mythic snakes: Lotus Cobra, Hooded Hydra and Kaseto, Orochi Archmage. All three are excellent at what they do.

          • Ryan Cameron

Oh right thanks, I forgot hooded hydra was in fact also a snake, and I knew about Orochi archmage but I honestly just somehow forgot the card when saying that..

          • It’s okay. There’s so many different cards, it’s impossible to remember them all.

          • Ryan Cameron

Yeah certainly, and I have only been playing magic since around Theros/Journey into Nyx although I have managed to learn quite a good deal of cards since that time both after and earlier.

  • DJPad

I realize the card will be played mainly for it’s second ability, but it seems as though the first ability will rarely ever trigger.

    • alexander macrae

I’m glad they put it on regardless, so she’s not just a combo piece. Obviously her first ability isn’t what anyone should be investing in. For a commander deck, I’m interested in looking for ways to play around with -1/-1 counters on my own creatures. Like Dusk Urchins. I think Dusk Urchins could be very powerful in her deck.

  • Ryū

YESSSSS, more snake power for me to use in edh. I am pleased.

  • kltsurumaki

-1/-1 counter commander deck here I come

  • Giby86 .

    Whoa. I’m impressed.

  • alexander macrae

Doesn’t this go infinite with Blowfly Infestation? Put a -1/-1 counter on Snake, killing it, getting another Snake, putting the counter on that, killing it and getting yet another Snake. With anything that benefits from creatures entering or dying, that’s pretty good.

    • KrakenHunter

I think creatures requires an empty stack to get on the field, so the -1/-1 counter needs to be placed before you get to spawn the token snake even tho you own both spells. But I could be wrong?

      • Giby86 .

I think the “move the -1/-1 counter” resolves before the “create a snake”. Let’s see: I have a snake; I attack with Hapatra; I put the -1/-1 counter on the snake, which triggers the “create a snake”; before anything happens, as a state-based effect the snake dies, and the “move the counter” ability triggers. So this resolves, you move the -1/-1 counter, and then you create a snake?
This is because, I think, the snake with the -1/-1 dies when priority changes, but after the “create a snake” trigger goes on the stack, so you don’t get to choose the order in which the two triggers go on the stack.

        …Juuuuudge!

        • De’Elgathor

Blowfly Infestation doesn’t move the counter, just puts a new one on a creature. The new snake token doesn’t exist for Blowfly Infestation to target when it triggers, however, since it triggers after Hapatra but before she can resolve.

          • Giby86 .

Yes, alright, I was shortcutting that, but it shouldn’t change much, right? Even if it moved the counter, the snake still wouldn’t exist.

          • De’Elgathor

Right, which is what I had said.

          • Tolle

You’d need an extra 1/1 creature to get it going. Flourishing defenses is a similar card and it works there.

        • Tolle

Two triggered abilities will go on the stack at the same time due to state based action weirdness. You choose which resolves first

        • Absinthman

Almost. When you put a counter on a snake, it triggers the create snake ability which is waiting to be put onto the stack next time a player would receive priority. First, the game checks state-based effects and realizes that snake should die. When it dies, the put counter ability is also triggered and waits for next time someone should get priority. State based actions are checked again but find nothing else to do, so now’s when a player should receive priority and both triggers are put onto the stack at the same time. You can choose the order because you control both of them. However, you still have to select targets for them, and you can’t target the snake because the ability that creates it hasn’t resolved yet.

TL;DR: there is a small difference in the process but you are right, it doesn’t work.

          • Giby86 .

            Thank you!

          • Dave

            This guy has it right.

        • KrakenHunter

Normally if you control all spells on the stack you can choose the order in which they resolve. but still, I don’t think a creature can hit the field if the stack is not empty unless it has flash.

          • sansmyhands

They 100% can. Token creaters, blink, Lurking Predators, etc all do it. You can’t CAST a creature spell without flash if the stack isn’t empty and it’s not the main phase of your turn, but any permanent can enter the battlefield at any time if the right conditions are met.

          • KrakenHunter

            Yup thats right ^^ mb

          • Giby86 .

There is no such rule. A creature cannot hit *the stack* if the stack is not empty and the creature doesn’t have flash, but a token created by an instant, for example, can be created with stuff on the stack.

      • De’Elgathor

Creatures have never needed an empty stack to go on the field. See Mystic Snake and Draining Whelk, which couldn’t function if that were a rule.

        • KrakenHunter

Those creatures have flash…hence function has an instant.

          • De’Elgathor

Functioning as an instant doesn’t change that they’re creatures, with abilities that trigger once they enter the battlefield.
Alternatively, look at Lurking Predators, which triggers only when an opponent casts a spell, or Primal Surge, which puts any kind of permanent onto the battlefield while it’s resolving.

          • KrakenHunter

Couldn’t find any rule about that so I guess your right. can’t remember where I’ve had heard that from tho.

          • Thomas Luffman

Anything non-instant speed can only be “played” at sorcery speed. That is on your main phase with an empty stack

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

    YESSSSSSSSSSSS I’m in love :D

  • Lord Gonti Of The Orzov Networ

    I LLLOOOOOVVVVVEEEE this card!!!

  • Jude

    Sneks .w. tsss

  • George Robinson

    Brilliant.

  • kmk888

Kill things and get snakes that kill more things. Kalitas and Hapatra were made for each other.

  • Omeneon

I can only imagine how much fun a deck involving this card, Melira, Sylvok Outcast, and Black Sun’s Zenith would be.

  • Derek Niles

this is a cool, pretty powerful, well designed legendary. I like it

  • Matthew Douglas

Just feels like she should have Deathtouch, and not just for flavor. I don’t see her getting trough to connect often otherwise.

    • Tolle

If we are going down that road. Give her wither.

      • Dave

Why wither when you can INFECT? Combine with Atraxa and laugh all the way to the bank.

        • Kaiser

cause no one likes infect (?) short cut the games too much

        • Edward

Infect isn’t fun and since Commander is supposed to be a casual format fun is the whole point. The only time you should run infect in Commander is when everyone has competitive decks. Same thing goes for infinite combos

          • Dave

Okayokay, I get it. I’m not playing infect myself because it seems a bit cheap honestly. Just wanted to point out a potential synergy. :)

          • Thomas Luffman

Little known fact: competitive commander is the world’s leading producer of salt.

          • Tolle

Not true. There is also the infect myr that is run because it is another myr. :P

        • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

Infect doesnt fits flavour… infect is only for new phys

          • Dave

            Ah, a fellow Colognian. :)

Didn’t mean the card should have it. Just a strong ability to ahve in conjunction with her and Atraxa.
Oh man, I’m so eager to see Phyrexia again. Won’t be long hopefully.

          • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

I like the poisonous ability but maro say he wont do this anymore

            See Futuresight
            “Snake Cult Initiation”
            3B
            Enchantment — Aura
            Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has poisonous 3. (Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, that player gets three poison counters. A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.)

        • Tolle

Because at least wither is a fun and interactive mechanic instead of the op oppressive mechanic that is infect.

          • Shagoth

Why did they think that double strike to a player/wither to creatures was a good idea to put on a one drop and an unblockable two drop?

    • Omeneon

Besides standard, Rogue’s Passage is legal in every format. Just saying.

  • Zombie

That second ability is just gonna be pumping out snakes, holy…

  • lja

goes infinite tokens with the Anafenza + finks combo.

    • alexander macrae

It would not. The first Snake token made would have the lowest toughness, thus getting Anafenza’s +1/+1 counter, leaving the Finks on the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter, ending the combo. If that’s your plan though, there are easier ways to make that happen. Any persist creature with a sac outlet and Ivy Lane Denizen, for instance. Also, Anafenza is double white, and Hapatra is black/green. That still doesn’t unclide the mana you need for the Finks and whatever your sac outlet is. That’s a lot of color weight to attempt an easily disrupted combo.

      • Mark

lol no, you can always bolster onto the finks because it enters with one toughness.

  • Don Manzo

How would she work with Diety of Scars?

    • alexander macrae

I think he’d enter and you’d get one snake, and that’d be it.

      • Don Manzo

Ahh, I was thinking the -1/-1 counters on him would generate a snake.

        • alexander macrae

Yeah, I think any creature entering with a -1/-1 counter will trigger he ability, giving you snake. But you’d only get one because of her wording “one or more.” He’d be fine in her deck, I think. Especially since you can put -1/-1 counters on him without much danger of him dying.

        • Happy The Cat

she doesn’t say “put that many 1/1 snakes onto the battlefield”. For that, you’ll need to look at Nest of Scarabs.

  • Deadly Berry

I don’t play Tiny Leaders; but this one could be a nice excuse to try the format out. And the tokens have deathtouch! GG

    • Giby86 .

      Nobody plays tiny leaders.

  • Jacob Kodicovic

Hey, it’s Cleopatra! I really liked how they incorporated her suicide method of death by snake by literally surrounding her with them. Also, the art’s amazing, and Atraxa just found a new member for her bowling team.

    • KÖLLEWOOD (MOBIL)

She even can kill herself this way in turn 3 if control only this creature or in response…

Do she trigger twice with doublestrike?

      • Happy The Cat

it says when she deals combat damage, so yes.

  • Phillip Reid

Looks like modern abzan company just found a new combo piece. Just really good and in that deck. Wow.

    • David Meyers

It would really just be a win-more card. It doesn’t actually make the combo work, it would just give the benefit of infinite tokens on top of infinite life if it’s on the field when combo goes off. If inifinite life doesn’t make your opponent scoop, though, you could scry this to the top as an alternate to going infinite with redcap/zulaport/blood artist

      • Mark

this is still really solid against other creature decks, even without the combo, getting a dt snake when you block with a finks is super good against jund, death’s shadow, etc. some decks don’t care about your infinite life, and this is a better wincon than redcap in certain situations (you can hit it off CoCo, it’s cheaper to chord for) … also worth noting that this combos with anafenza and redcap with no sac outlet needed (redcap shoots itself to make infinite snakes)

        • David Meyers

I do like the idea of a two-card combo, I hadn’t thought of that. Also, fair point on dragging extra value, even when not comboing off.

  • Necrachilles

Pretty solid EDH. Is this going to be a 2CMC dual color legend cycle?

    • Tolle

Not unless there are 10. First one was ally, now we have enemy. But then there’d be 15 legends in a single set. Which they dislike doing.

      • Transgendent

They could do 3 allies and 2 enemies or vice visa and then put the remaining combinations in HoD

      • Vizzerdrix

seeing the discard spell that says non legendary and all the monument cards i could see there being a strong legendary theme to the set also theros block had 15 gods and like 10 other legendary creatures and a handful of non creature legendary cards, theres also a lot of legendary creatures in bfz

      • Necrachilles

Dislike but have done several times

    • Phyrexianshadow

Maro confirmed there are only two viziers :(

      • Necrachilles

Well least it looks like there’s hope for dual color legend cycle even if not 2cmc :D

  • Keith Wood

My snek deck just grew stronger :)

  • Minizem

    *audible commander-gasm*

  • Robert FakeLastName

    hmm infect commander…

    • Happy The Cat

no! bad player! infect isn’t for casual formats!

      • Aurore

Tell that to my Xenagod deck that kills people out of nowhere with Putrefax.

  • VBFabled

I’m already planning this EDH deck. Was about to build a Pharika deck, but this is just better! Pharika can be in it, though.

  • Aurore

This is a really solid snake. :)

  • demorshiffer

    quillspike + devoted druid

    • Alisson Lima

That’s already a win combo, but it can be really good in commander.

  • Fey

Because what Commander really needed was more people playing Infect.
