• Random Guy

Well that confirms the theory that planeswalkers can’t leave then.

4 mana O-ring is fair. The second phrase is minor.

    • Cody Daniels

Could heavily weaken use of Chandra tho. Snap one up with this and red cant do much about your enchantment.

      • Random Guy

I don’t know why you’re saying that. If you throw this on a (Standard) Chandra you’re trading an equal amount of mana/cards but your opponent gets to activate her first, so you lose advantage. Also Chandra isn’t played all that often. Also RG decks with chandra are fairly common, and I think G has good enchantment removal? Can’t remember.

        • Eli Eyal Broide

But then Chandras become dead draws so…

          • Random Guy

Probability of drawing two of the same cards is somewhat low, maybe like 20%. Anyhow killing 1/5 of a Chandra is not worth giving a Chandra activation, plus it only affects card advantage not mana advantage.

          • Samuel Lockley

theyre getting an activation no matter what kind of removal you use since they hold priority duhhh

          • Hedronal

That’s how it works with Cast Out. This is sorcery speed, so it doesn’t even get that far.

          • Random Guy

Shock counters saheeli felidar, so what you’re saying is untrue to some degree tho I’m not sure what degree

        • Nikolai Anzuoni

“Chandra isn’t played that often” looks at $40 price tag. Looks at ramunap red. Looks at Temur energy. Looks at jeskai gift.

    • Ethan Naugle

“Theory that planeswlakers can’t leave”? What do you mean?

      • Random Guy

Lots of people on reddit were theorizing that planeswalkers can’t planeswalk on Ixalan. I dunno what other evidence there is for it, but Huatli is a “native” which would be unlikely if she could planeswalk to any high-tech plane, and Jace is a castaway which is impossible since he can just planeswalk away, unless there’s something holding him back.

        • Ethan Naugle

Gotcha. Though didnt Jace lose his memory again or something so coulsnt that be part of it for him? In any case, considdering this card’s name is “Ixalans Binding” thatd make sense. Also flavor wise, if Ixalan cant be planeswalked to normally, then its kind of like a legend (similar to legends of the Caribbean that dont exist, but even in legend are hard to find). Also, Jace is kind of being cast off here, like marooned on an island, which is pretty pirate-y (at least in pirates of the Caribbean sense).

          • William He

Jace still managed to planeswalk after sacrificing his memories to Alhammaret, so his amnesia would be unlikely reason why he couldn’t planeswalk.

      • Hedronal

The source that revealed this and Huatli (Pax) confirmed planeswalkers can’t leave Ixalan.

    • Robert FakeLastName

Though, I can see it now. “With your 5 colors combined I am super deus ex which will allow you to leave this forsaken plane. Oh, and pollution is bad.”

  • Hedronal

This is expensive for constructed removal, but I think will likely see play based simply on how well it compares to what’s being removed, and how long it can reliably avoid enchantment removal from whatever it’s played against.

Story cards seem to be becoming more constructed-relevant, though that’s probably warped coming from the Hours cycle. This does seem to support planeswalkers not leaving, but we’ll need more to confirm, and details are always helpful.

    • galen150

well seeing as cast away is decent in constructed and this is a nice side grade to it, i think it’ll see some play in standard

      • Hedronal

Cycling and Flash are huge advantages though. This seems likely to be at least partly an alternate Cast Out, but not a replacement.

    • Caleb Martin

Considering all the little evidence pointing towards planeswalkers not being able to leave, I think it’s basically confirmed at this point.

      • Hedronal

Generally known, but not confirmed that I knew of. Confirmed is an all-or-nothing thing. Now I know that Pax confirmed it.

    • bentheechidna

Support? It’s confirmed that Planeswalkers can’t leave Ixalan.

      • Hedronal

In the Pax panel which I’ve now looked into, yes. When someone doesn’t seem to know something’s confirmed, adding where confirmed it helps.

  • Happy The Cat

oh hey Exclusion Ritual, you’ve gotten cheaper.
to white edh lock decks you go!

  • Jad

Fun fact: Jace is on his hands and knees here just like Bolas positioned him in their fightXD

    • Scott Mc clean

This is probably right after he planeswalked. Im super curious as to how theyre gonna handle this

      • Frosty

Each defeated planeswalker of the gatewatch will probably go on their own journey to rediscover/reinvent themselves in order to become stronger, while meeting other planeswalkers(new and old). Meanwhile Bolas would be putting his plan in motion, which will lead both sides on a course where they will face each other once more. As for Jace in particular, his journey will probably have him meet Vraska.

        • William He

Multi-colored versions of the gatewatch would be interesting. For example, if Vraska plays a large influence on Jace I could see him becoming UB.

        • Zombie

I’d rather the Gatewatch just die so we can stop with the infinite walker printings

          • TheFullMontzy

I don’t want them to die. I actually really like the characters of the gatewatch! But you are definitely right that wizards needs to start printing more than just the one or two obligatory non-gatewatch walkers each block.

        • jack smith

It could be interesting, and could lead to new abilities for the gatewatch. Jace has a new effect to clone himself, maybe the other planeswalkers could learn new ways to use their magic as well

      • Zombie

Planeswalkers can’t leave Ixalan. That’s pretty much it for the story for Jace, he’s a castaway on Ixalan trying to find a way to leave.

        • Reyos Blackwood

Good, if he stays stuck through the block (unlikely) maybe we can stop having a new jace every block

  • galen150

based on the name and flavor text, seems like he is stuck on ixalan by some magic and unable to planeswalk away. maybe that’s what happened, not him losing his memory.

    • Caleb Martin

      Or both

    • bentheechidna

Oh he definitely lost his memory. Bolas nearly killed him by erasing his mind, and he planeswalked away right before that happened.

They confirmed in the flavor panel at PAX that Ixalan traps planeswalkers to prevent them from leaving.

      • Hedronal

Thank you for actually saying where it was confirmed, I hadn’t found anyone saying that yet.

  • Caleb Martin

So we get a card for what’s keeping planeswalkers here. Cool.

I love the combination of two common white effects. It makes a very elegant design.

  • Shagoth

I think that Cast Out’s flash and cycling is better than the last sentence here.

    • Hedronal

I agree, but options are nice, plus this will stay when Cast Out rotates.

  • Sling

Would this prevent a commander from being cast again in edh even if they put it in the command zone?

    • Necrachilles

Nope. Because when it checks the exiled card it’s no longer there.

  • Jude

Its an oblivion ring with nevermore stapled to it. I like it

  • Dragoncastermaster

the return clause isn’t separate like with o ring but with the nevermore effect you’re okay with it!

  • Brian Schmidt

I wouldn’t think that the Mickey Mouse of Magic himself would not be able to planes walk away just because they said so. His Castaway card makes me believe he finds a way to trick the plane into thinking that he is still there with one of his illusions and is able to planes walk as such. Just a thought here.

Jace: I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we’re bored we play in the woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook
“Run, run, lost boy, ” they say to me
    Away from all of reality

Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free
