  • Jaryntaylor

    That’s badass!

  • blueisoverrated

XD its the same as the old niv mizzet, but now its the new niv mizzet foiling all of your infinite combos

  • richie00lama

They should’ve printed the old, original one.

    • richie00lama

      *reprinted

    • Shadow 921

      NO THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE!!

  • if they had reprinted the old one the card would be banned or something. it would be overkill in a deck with jace, memory adept + tamiyo. you would kill your opponent in the turn after you played it…

  • Tim

Well this is substantially better than the original. Because the ability isn’t a tap ability, you can draw more and burn more per turn. This is definitely going to be a huge threat to deal with if it manages to stay on the board for the card advantage it can produce if left unchecked.

Also, that flavor text is great.

    • blueisoverrated

the whole reason he was printed this way was because it was too easy to exploit the old niv mizzet for an infinite win.

      • Yeah, but that was the fun part about him. I’m just glad Todd Lockwood is the artist for this one, now I can have this one altered too and framed next to my Firemind.  X3 Seems somewhat dumbed from the original, but I can already think of a few wins with this one. In any case, he’s still a threat.

    • Thomasalbacete

i like the old one better. you can use curiosity as a kill combo

    • Neuo the 1

you can’t say he is substantially better because they would fill completely  different roles in a deck. this one is the i hit you in air then gain benefit well the other is, i have a blocker up and at end of your turn i tap it to draw a card and hurt you.

  • Guest

Use this Niv-Mizzet in a combo with the old Niv-Mizzet.

    • Neuo the 1

so you deal damage with this one and draw a card then deal one damage with the old one why is that all that good, plus the abilities don’t interact the other way.

      • Shadow921

you tap the old one draw a card deal damage draw a card of this one forever

        • Firemind

Doesn’t work.  They are considered two separate “Niv-Mizzet’s”.  They are two separate creatures that share a name.  Legendary rule won’t affect them since they are separate cards.  Planeswalker rule about names has no importance here since they aren’t planeswalkers but creatures instead.

  • Guest

imagine untapping with this on board….. woah

  • Nthrof

    Dat Flavour

  • Tweygoh

Whenever I read that name it reminds me of that looney tunes cartoon where wile e coyote says, “Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius!”

  • Nunzioni

Way better than the old one, not for a johnny maybe but definitely for a spike. The old one was kind of weak on its own because its ability was a tap ability so you couldn’t attack and use it same turn but could be broken with a couple of other cards, such as curiousity and jace. This is much better on its own, as it is bigger and gets you a lot more card advantage.

  • On one hand I’m glad to see Niv back in standard.. On the other hand i wish they would have gotten more creative than slightly nerfing the original and calling it a day. This card has practically been eratta’d its so similar to its original. Thats just boring =(

    • 92fjdv

i believe this is not a nerf. but actually a buff. since the old one you needed to tap him to actually buy a card, yes this one has to pay mana. but hey. in case you ran out of hand, you can always poke a player to death and buy more cards

  • Guy

QUESTION: the rtr prerelease promo card for izzet is what? Do we know or is it or is it not the guild leaders?

    • Nick

I believe its Hypersonic Dragon.  I don’t think they are giving away any of the guild leaders.

  • Nivmizzet

    draco genius indeed

  • Firestorm75

Much better Niv-Mezzet, he will make good use of my unused mana.

  • when i read his flavor text i imagine some goblin trying to explain this new equation to him but its too strong and makes his head explode and niv mizzet just sits there and slow claps. :)

  • Firemind

Great for a Niv 1.0 EDH deck.  Not only is he a decently large hitter, and perfect for the theme, but his 2nd ability, in conjunction with his 1st, allows you to set off the Niv 1.0 infinite loop prior to your turn’s draw step, meaning you don’t have to rely on having a draw instant in your hand.  Also, if the Niv 1.0 combo is not complete, you have draw accel to bring you into it.  Since Niv 1.0 EDH is played as a EDH control deck to some degree, having the extra draw is damn nice.

  • Hellsing

Old Mizzet+Snake Umbra = win lol. This one won’t be nearly as broken in standard. There isn’t much that will let it do burn damage without it costing mana you may as well use for the ability. He doesn’t seem like he’ll be very useful now that his ability’s mana-based. Nibilis of the Breath + Lightning Prowess won’t really be worth the effort. tsk tsk. Oh well good thing there’s Rakdos :D
