  • Kaalia intensifies

    • Hmm…

      The human? Idk….

      • Happy The Cat

no, now we get another foil for our Kaalia rbw fatties deck
this will look good next to my foil Iona and full art baneslayer

    • TJ

      This came with Kaalia.

  • Beeronious

Wow, one of the angels nobody ever played. Serra Angel may be rubbish now, but it least it was relevant in its time.

    • Dr. Burn Crow

      Glad to know I’m “nobody.”

      • Nharzhool

Speaking of you…I’m so glad they Errata’d Storm Crow to be an Angel. It means it will definitely be in this! I’m super keen!

    • Kameenook

Outside of standard, which I’m not even sure about, has Avacyn really seen play? It’s not like these are powerhouses in EDH or anything…….

      • YouGotFranked

Avacyn is played in EDH and is a powerhouse there. Heck it calmed down a bit, but there was a time where every white edh decks played Avacyn.

        • Zombie

Honestly, the M15 version of Avacyn is way better in most decks than the original Avacyn.

Every Kaalia deck can play Avacyn because Kaalia just puts Avacyn into play and doesn’t have to pay that insane amount of mana.

          • Kameenook

I really think your EDH playgroup is messed up in the head…. Avacyn is very annoying to play against, whilst the Guardian Angel is relatively easy to deal with.

          • Zombie

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is only a viable drop when you can cheat her out in a permanent heavy deck. She has a very high mana cost that’s very color intensive.

If you take too long to get Avacyn out on the board to protect your permanents, then there’s not going to be much for her to protect once she’s in play, and her ability still doesn’t protect from Exile effects, which are a large part of the targeted removal in the format.

Guardian Angel, while she doesn’t protect on a massive scale, comes down earlier, is easier to cast, and can protect both your permanents and yourself on an individual and on-demand basis.

Plus, she stops damage altogether. Indestructible creatures still take damage normally, it just can’t destroy them. So if an Indestructible creature would take lethal damage, they’ll still be able to be killed by -X/-X effects.

          • Kameenook

See she’s not unbeatable, but in my playgroup, everyone just turns their attention and starts teaming up. In my playgroup we don’t have infinite wallets to get STP, Path, Hallowed Burial, etc, it’s usually Merciless Eviction or the beetle thingy.

          • Zombie

Yeah, my EDH group is the same group of people I play Vintage tournaments with. Our EDH games are ridiculous. We usually play competitively whenever we can.

I play Burning Oath in Vintage, and I’m the only one out of these guys who still uses white-bordered power. So you can imagine how crazy the EDH decks can be with their budget.

My favorite is my friend’s 100% foil Doran, the Siege Tower. He’s even got the full art Doran to boot.

          • Kameenook

Nice! I don’t play enough EDH, but I still try to foil out cards in my EDH decks when I can. They’re pretty budget friendly, because I can’t stand to trade for a Sol Ring when I could get a few other cool rares for the same trade.

          • Zombie

Why would you have to trade for a Sol Ring?

Unless it’s an Alpha/Beta Sol Ring, every copy of Sol Ring is dirt cheap thanks to constant reprinting in the Commander series.

          • Kameenook

Aren’t they still like $4 or so? If they’re down to about $2 I’ll trade for ’em, but I NEVER purchase cards, I’d rather spend money on drafting or playing in events.

          • Zombie

You don’t have a $4 card that you could trade?

          • TJ

The thing is, in most EDH games they don’t end that soon, most times. Gives you time to build, tutor and ramp, with more than one way to cheat her out, she is bomb. Give her shroud and all of a sudden, the only thing you can do is board bounce or exile, neither one makes for great political relationships. The newer Avacyn is only ok, two for any other creature but her. She is to easy to blast, and there are other spells that do a better job at protection.

          • Zombie

But other protection spells can’t switch between protecting your creatures and your life total while simultaneously smacking your opponent, on top of coming out and hitting the board 3 turns faster, which is multiplayer EDH is a lifetime.

That’s 3 full rounds of protection before Avacyn, Angel of Hope would even affect the board at all. That’s 9 total opponent’s turns in the average multiplayer EDH game that Avacyn, Guardian Angel can be available to stop your opponents from focusing down your General or other large threat.

And you’re correct, most EDH decks won’t end that quickly. But your important creatures and your life total WILL be under threat that early, and Avacyn, Guardian Angel does a much better job of protecting those high value cards, your General, and your own life total.

Take this from someone who’s played EDH since the bored judges invented the format, Avacyn, Guardian Angel is an extremely valuable protection resource, and works better in more decks than Angel of Hope.

    • Melissa Juice

This was played. Great card. Good inclusion in the set.

      Sick art, too.

      • Zombie

Yeah idk wtf Beeronious is talking about, almost every Kaalia deck I’ve ever seen has played Tariel.

        • Melissa Juice

Maybe his comment was…erroneous. Huh? …Huh?
          lol

          • Zombie

            ayy lmao

          • Happy The Cat

think about what this would be in standard though, oh your deck spammed out siege rhinos that I have to kill? well good thing I’m three removal colors, now let me borrow those.you like all those origins walkers? well good thing I do to cause Imma steal yours. oh your playing atarkas as fast as you can lemme get some of those.

          • Zombie

Mardu doesn’t exactly have a way to ramp into Tariel in Standard now, though, unfortunately. Which would be the whole point of playing her.

Zurgo Helmsmasher is an extremely strong card but he costs too much mana for his colors, which is why he was never played.

          • TJ

Uhhhhhh, Tariel has never been standard legal, just eternal.

          • Zombie

My response was to someone who was posing the idea of what would happen if Tariel was in Standard.

            Context clues are everything buddy.

    • Zombie

Plenty of people play Tariel in their Kaalia of the Vast decks.

Sure, she doesn’t instantly end games but she can play an insane attrition game if you need to.

Tariel has always been one of the best ways for Kaalia decks to quickly recover from mass removal.

      • TJ

Prefer debtor’s knell my self, no randomness to it, you get what you want, but thn again, the meanest of graveyard cards is rise of the dark realms. I am not sure which creature I want more……..ahhhh just give me all of them.

        • Zombie

Or you just play both. Which is what most people do, considering there’s nothing stopping you from doing so.

Not to mention you can drop Tariel off of Kaalia. You can’t do that with Knell.

    • Happy The Cat

this is a casual only card that has never been printed in a block so of course it didn’t see as much play as one of the first white bombs ever printed. if this was in standard rbw attrition would be the best deck in standard, it can wall all dragonlords but atarka who rbw can kill easy having the three biggest removal colors plus you get any dead dragons onto your side of the field. the only thing it doesn’t have is mana dorks so sure the deck would be slower than turn-3-siege-rhino-the-deck but most of those won’t when by the time she enters and then you have all those rhinos to bring back

  • Nharzhool

    mmhmm….*ahem*…**ahem**…**AHEM**!

    Called it! #SmugAsshole

    • Derek Niles

      lol same here

  • Happy The Cat

edhmm… Yes it’s a dam good angel but a card that hasn’t been released in a real set in here? at least EDH gets it again in a better foil. also with it not being overshadowed by Kaalia I guess it will be the best rwb card in the angels only limited box
what plane is she from though? if we get this in standard I might run a deck that’s not one color again (lol jk mono for lyfe!)

  • Kameenook

Got to say, Tariel’s pretty legit.

  • da

Yay my prayers have been answered, I’ve been hoping for a foil version of this for the longest time <3

    • Jonathan Reynolds

Hey, a foil version exists… it just doesn’t shuffle well.

  • Joshua Alt

So happy I won one last weekend, on the fence about trading some of the cards though…I really don’t want to but I would like to get 3 more Dragonlord Ojutai’s….the Dragonlord could wait though.

  • boogers

This looks like a yugioh style of foil. Hoping this is fake.

    • anonycard

FTV cards are foiled differently from normal cards. This is not fake and is a awesome card for this set

      • boogers

        lol rustled jimmies confirmed

        • anonycard

Wait ? what? jimmies rustled ? OH yeah I’m on the internet, Good meme sir , I to jimmies rustled because newfag can’t triforce YO! (all said in a old man voice). No I was stating a fact, and I tough you were truly thinking this was I fake card.

    • MrAptronym

Its how FTV cards have always been foiled.

      • boogers

I think part of why it looks weird to me is the way the sleeve is affecting the foil.

    • Jordan

Wait till you see Jace the mind sculptor out of FTV twenty

  • Happy The Cat

happy to see the best wbr general that doesn’t get you automatically killed

  • Derek Niles

This is the first time this has been printed foil right?
