seems like a much weaker doubling seasons?

    • BusinessmanGinger

It’s not really comparable to Doubling Season, it’s much better to compare it to Hardened Scales which essentially does the same thing but this is on a stick and for and extra B

      • Jakob Schneider

»it’s much better to compare it to Hardened Scales which essentially does the same thing but this is on a stick and for and extra B«

@businessmanginger:disqus You’re right about it being more comparable to Hardened Scales, though you misused the words »on a stick«.

        You mean »on legs«.

Something is said to be “on a stick” when the original effect that’s known from a sorcery or instant [i.e. an effect that you get only once] can be activated on a permanent.
The titular example of this would be Isochron Scepter.
An example from this set would be the Quicksmith Rebel, which makes one of your artifacts “a shock on a stick”.

        • Evan Dischinger

          Thanks I had no idea!

    • Jacob Kodicovic

Please don’t compare things to Doubling Season. It makes them feel bad.

  • Seraph

Oh what’s this, you don’t get experience counters with Meren as commander fast enough? I’ve got just the thing for you pal!

    • Litdaze

Artifact or Creature… I don’t think it goes into Experience Counters

      • Jacob Anderson

        It’s second ability tho.

      • frausti

        read the second sentence

  • Jacob Anderson

Wouldn’t putting a +1/+1 counter on a creature trigger it’s first and second ability, so it would get 3 counters instead of 1 or just 2? Or is “placing” and “getting” two completely different things?

    • dTHEb

Ya thought the same thing as I first read it but I think there is a distinction between counters that affect creatures and artifacts and those which affect you(energy and infect for example).

    • MithosFall

When “you get a counter”, it only includes counters that are placed on you as a player, so Experience Counters or Poison Counters. By the way, neither of these are triggered abilities since they don’t include when, whenever, or at.

      • Jacob Anderson

ok thanks, i see it doesn’t say may so you do get an extra poison counter so that sucks lol, oh well poison isn’t in standard so it doesn’t matter to much.

        • Random Guy

However, if you have two snakes, then each time a counter is place TWO additional counters are placed.

    • Zombie

No, this is prevented by the “one or more” clause attached to effects like this.

It doesn’t matter if it’s 1 counter or 20 being put on a creature, it’s still an individual instance of an effect placing any number of counters on that creature. This ability is changing the value of the total number of counters being placed on that creature.

This is what’s known as “replacement”, IIRC.

Say you put 5 +1/+1 counters on something with this in play. This ability triggers, sees the 5 +1/+1 counters, and makes it 6 +1/+1 counters instead of 5.

And the second ability only refers to “you” as the player.

It specifically refers to counters that affect players, like Energy Counters.

  • Ruby

Because we really needed to make Meren stronger… -_-

    • Zombie

      I’m ok with this.

Someone in our playgroup plays Meren. We just tutor chain for Rest in Peace or Tormod’s Crypt and shut him down.

Graveyard decks are hilariously easy to stop.

  • Blahblahblahbla

Sweet jesus. Energy going HAAM with this card..

  • Nanya

Oh look, more Kresh the Bloodbraid support.

  • Fred Weasley

I’m positive that you can use this with Metallic Mimic and you will not lose. Both two drops even!

  • Ryuji Nichol Pabila

blah blah energy blah blah experience counters atraxa blah blah blah doubling season blah blah blah anything related to putting counters on artifacts and g/b creatures. too bad grixis marchesa can’t use this. =( and lol hide from infect opponents

  • Dave

Was pondering Sultai Energy before, this makes it one step closer.

    • Jacob Anderson

Works good with Dark Schemes Demon, survives it -2/-2. I always liked that card, maybe it will see some standard play now. Would this make it so you get 2 energy for every creature killed or just one more then what you usually would get?

      • Dave

You’d get 2 energy for every creature that dies, since each trigger is resolved separately. Pretty nice. Longtusk Cub and Tireless Tracker will also survive the Demon with high probability.

  • Gord

I really want to donate this to someone I’m infecting I know it’s a pointless hoop but still want it to happen

  • Happy The Cat

*checks set symbol* lol wait what? this is an just uncommon outside of a commander set?

  • Nebulium

I love that it’s a snake that gives you poison counters if you’re hit by something with infect. Like it just turns around and bites you at the first smell of blood.

  • Deadly Berry

    Atraxa drools.

  • Nanya

Oh sweet! My 5 color Divinity Counter deck got better.
    If I built it.
    Which I haven’t.
    But it would be fun.

  • Jakob Schneider

    Hell yes!

    Hardened Scales 5-8 on legs?

I don’t even mind it being black, too – this makes her the perfect companion of Bloodhall Oooze!

    • Random Guy

It’s so much stronger than hardened scales too. A 2/3 body for +1 mana in a deck with proliferate is no joke.

      • Jakob Schneider

good point, though it is also far more likely to get hit by removal

        • Random Guy

+1/+1 decks tend to have a lot of valuable creatures, so it’s not a huge downside.

  • Jonathan

What a neat little card for Atraxa. Although, I wish this was GU for Ezuri.

  • Shagoth

    Hi mazirek
And the two commanders seemingly everything goes into (Meren and Atraxa).
Stay away from Skittle the Blight Dragon decks, though.

  • potatogod442

So you shouldn’t use this card against infect?

  • JP

Sweet Jeebus… I’m going to run this in every EDH I own in {B/G}. Works well with ‘Undying’ but not ‘Persist’. Great with the cycle of ‘Experience’ counters based Commanders, but hurts you vs. ‘Infect/Poisonous’. Obviously would have been stronger in design if it simply added the choice word ‘may’ into both triggers~

  • james hegge

yahenni’s pet snake anyone.well standard anyway, probably something better in modern

  • Phoenix UNBENCHED

    snake look high af

  • bonogringo

Yes sure, the weakest point of decks without weakest point is the ban list anyway!

  • Zombie

    Ehhh… debatable.

  • Scathain

Nah, just the decks that don’t have such glaring weaknesses are generally weaker than those that do (being more all-around weak than having a specific weak spot).

  • Evan Dischinger

Dies to removal can be a completely valid point. We have the bolt test in modern for a reason, and in legacy swords keeps some cards from seeing play.
